The Album Leaf Delivers The Endless Movie Score

The Album Leaf (a.k.a Jimmy LaValle) has scored The Endless, the upcoming film by Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead, with whom he last worked on 2014 film Spring.

We’re told that The Endless “stars Benson and Moorhead themselves as brothers who return to the creepy cult they escaped years before after they receive a mysterious video.” LaValle brought in collaborators David Lebleu and Matthew Resovich to provide modular synth and violin ambience, respectively. LaValle also collaborated on two songs with vocalist Emily Zuzik, including on a cover of “House of the Rising Sun.”

The Album Leaf has long been as a driving force in the instrumental, ambient, and post-rock worlds. For over twenty years now, LaValle has exercised his creative vision into the realms of film scoring, sound collage, and his singular style of ambient-electronic-rock music on labels from Tiger Style to Sub Pop to Relapse Records. The Endless is his 10th film score since 2010.

Traumprinz-Related SoundCloud Page Announces Two New Albums

Planet Uterus, the SoundCloud page of Prince Of Denmark, DJ Metatron, and Traumprinz, has today announced two new albums from two unknown artists or new aliases: DJ Healer and Prime Minister Of Doom—believed by many to be continuations of DJ Metatron and Prince Of Denmark respectively. This is more so after Inverted Audio reported a Facebook message with the words “new Traumprinz material,” and a link to the site All Possible Worlds, where you can buy the two triple-vinyl LPs.

“sell out,” the new track appeared on the SoundCloud page on Sunday, linking to www.allpossibleworlds.de where you have two options. Typing “n” takes you to a static image of the Hollywood Forever Cemetery; typing “y” causes a small ASCII shooting star to fly across before moving you to the order page. The two available releases are DJ Healer’s Nothing 2 Loose and Prime Minister of Doom’s Mudshadow Propaganda. There are no other details available; it is not even clear which label is behind the releases, or, indeed, whether it’s part of an April Fools joke. That being said, purchases do appear to be legitimate.

The two albums are available now.

Sera EKE Returns with Dark and Cinematic New EP

Enigmatic London-based singer, songwriter, and producer Sera EKE is set to return with a new EP, titled White Room.

The release lands after a special guest appearance for Nadine Shah at London’s Roundhouse, and follows her Coup Coup Coup EP, which arrived towards the back end of 2017. The EP was again mixed by Brian Eno’s longstanding guitarist Leo Abrahams, producer of recent album releases by Regina Spektor, Editors, and Ghostpoet respectively.

Tracklisting

01. Odd
02. White Room
03. Haze

White Room is out on April 13, with the title track, a dark, brooding, cinematic, and slightly unsettling slow jam, streaming in full below.

Premiere: Hear a Swirling Dub Cut From Thor

Icelandic dub techno pioneer Thor has a new record on the way via his own Thule Records.

Both Thor and Thule Records are considered pioneers of Iceland’s techno scene and the greater dub landscape, and on April 9 they’ll release Decay, a typical cinematic EP of dub-influenced techno. From the opening cut’s textured soundscapes and delicate chords to the weighty grooves of “Garden Of Corrosion” and the tense atmosphere and raw rhythms of “Pepper Jones,” Decay is yet another standout EP from a master of dub.

Decay is out on Thule Records on April 9 and can be pre-ordered here, with “Rusty Flashback” streaming in full via the player below.

OOFT! ‘The Big C’

Earlier this year, Glasgow-based producer Ali Herron (a.k.a OOFT!) dropped Intricacies of Modern Life, his debut full-length.

The completion of this album debut is described as “the culmination of a good few years effort,” with the slow building of a studio along the way, as well as a cultivation of the skills to use it. The initial plan was to pull together some existing tracks and make a few new ones to complete the project, but the whole release consists entirely of original material. By early 2016, after a long production process of tweaking, evolving, producing new material and in some cases completely replacing large sections and elements of older works, he finally felt on the right track, though it still took another year to fully finesse the songs and decide on final material.

Herron himself began soaking up influences when working at Carbon Music in Glasgow, “invaluable” years opening of his mind to music—absorbing everything from US house to French acapella artists, acoustic singer-songwriters, ambient electronica, and more. Known initially for edits, releasing on his own L.E.S.S. Productions label, he worked initially with his friend Graham Clark (a.k.a The Revenge). He would then have further material released on Midnight Riot, Delusions of Grandeur, and House of Disco. The bulk of his recordings, however, have landed on his own Foto Recordings, itself home to this debut long-play release.

The final product is described as “a departure” for those who think of OOFT! more as a disco-heavy edits type producer—though some of these early works are referenced in the intro. We’re told to expect “a concentration on a more electronic house-defined sound and a more “out-there” direction than edit style tracks.

XLR8R’s Top 10 Downloads of February

As most of our readers would know, every month XLR8R releases a wealth of free music via our ever popular downloads section. You’ll find cuts from nearly every genre under the sun—as well as a few curveballs that defy categorization—from new and established artists the world over; and every month, we crunch the numbers, tabulate the tracks, and announce the 10 most popular cuts to hit our downloads section. Now that we’re at the end of March, and all of February’s tracks have had time to marinate, it’s time to announce the most popular tracks from last month.

Interestingly, February’s top 10 was dominated almost entirely by new and rising artists. Aside from the top spot, which was taken by Concrete resident Antigone with his remix of Maxime Dangles‘ “Cloudy Rivers,” nearly all of the artists in the top 10 are relatively fresh faces. Tehran-born producer Mahdyar landed in the second spot with “Timmy Might Bury Ya’ll,” with Gerry Read, Toronto’s Hadi, and Oriol Fornós rounding out the top five.

February’s 10 most popular XLR8R downloads have been assembled into a list below and can be grabbed for free by following their respective links. In addition, all 10 tracks have been compiled into one convenient file, which can be downloaded via WeTransfer below.

1. Maxime Dangles “Cloudy Rivers” (Antigone Instinctive Remix)
2. Mahdyar “Timmy Might Bury Ya’ll”
3. Gerry Read “Please”
4. Hadi “Master”
5. Oriol Fornós “Waves”
6. Nate Husser “Hollywood”
7. Beshken “Fruits”

G Markus (a.k.a. Ben Gomori) ‘Make Me A Woman’

G Markus is a previously anonymous side project from Monologues Records label head Ben Gomori.

So far, the project has release credits on Exploited, Roots For Bloom, Sinnmusik*, Melodymathics, and Monologues, as well as three volumes of G-Edits 12″s, and a string of free edits via Soul Clap Records. There are also releases scheduled on Gator Boots, Music For Freaks, and Beats Of No Nation. The G Markus alias was originally conceived by Gomori as a way to release weirder music than he is known for under his own name, as he explains:

“I started the project as I wanted to make deeper, freakier, trackier stuff than I was known for under my own name. It was a breath of fresh air starting from a blank canvas and sending music to labels anonymously with no preconceptions, having no social media and so on. I’m really happy with what I’ve achieved with it and the project will continue to have a life of its own and be my superhero alter ego. This track, “Make Me A Woman,” is one of my favorite jams I’ve made as G. Markus, produced on my Korg Electribe sampler with a legendary diva in the mix.”

In support of the project’s unmasking, Gomori has offered up “Make Me A Women” as today’s XLR8R download, available via WeTransfer below.

Thundercat and Flying Lotus Score New Episode of FX’s “Atlanta”

Thundercat and Flying Lotus scored last night’s episode of FX’s Atlanta.

Viewers of the show, currently in the midst of its second season, last night were treated to a surprise in the form of a score by the pair. This season’s fifth episode saw the frequent collaborators compose original music which featured throughout its runtime.

Creator, writer and protagonist Donald Glover, who also has a recording career under the name Childish Gambino, is a longtime friend of Thundercat (a.k.a Stephen Bruner) and invited him to score an episode. Thundercat then turned to close conspirator Flying Lotus to work on the project with him.

The score serves as the latest appearance in a busy year for Thundercat, a vanguard of the LA jazz scene who in early 2017 released his fourth and most celebrated album to date on Brainfeeder, titled Drunk.

Mysterious Icelandic Trio aYia Return with ‘Sparkle’

Mysterious Icelandic trio aYia have returned with “Sparkle,” their latest single and their first official track in more than a year.

The aYia project is that of Ásta Fanney Sigurðardóttir, Kári Einarsson, and Kristinn Roach. Together, they’ve released two previous singles on Bedroom Community, “Ruins” and “Water Plant,” and they’re now back with “Sparkle.” The song starts at a mellow simmer, slowly building up to a massive climax, touching on pop and electronic along the way. Stream it now above, or buy it here.

Premiere: Hear a Dubbed-Out Track From Rico Casazza

London-based artist Rico Casazza today releases his latest EP, Yurican, via Beef Records.

Yurican will be Casazza’s first release of 2018 and the second for Beef Records, following on from BUSZ’ Symmetry Pt.2 EP. The four tracks on the EP bear all the Casazza trademarks, from the title track’s raw acidic grooves and dubbed-out synth lines to the tense atmospheres of “Macabre” and the driving techno of “End 2016.” Alongside the four originals, Dircsen provides a deep and druggy remix of “End 2016” to close out the EP in sleazy style.

You can pick up the EP here, with “Yurican” streaming in full via the player below.
