S.A.M. Returns with New Album

Samuel Andre Madsen (a.k.a S.A.M.) will release a new album later this month, titled Retrospect One.

Only last year did the Copenhagen-based producer release his debut album, titled Dream State Of A Bellmaker, as the eighth release on his own label Delaphine. It follows a series of EPs, starting in 2007, that had seen him become widely known in the club scene for his classic and dubbed-out house cuts. He quickly proliferated into minimal, experimental, and ambient releases while keeping his signature sound in a soulful house niche.

This latest release will be landing digitally for the first time; Delaphine has historically been a vinyl-only imprint since its birth five years ago. The musical identity of the label has been infused from the beginning with a mixture of ambient sounds, field recordings, dub techno, and minimal.

Psychoplasmics ‘Berlin Nights’

On March 16, Reykjavik artist Lord Pusswhip is set to land on Bjarki‘s bbbbbb imprint with a seven-track EP titled Hand Of Glory.

Since launching last year, Bjarki’s bbbbbb has been a lynchpin in the Iceland’s dance music scene, acting as a hub for a beguiling array of forward-thinking releases from Bjarki and artists in his periphery, such as Volruptus and, now, Lord Pusswhip. Hand Of Glory will represent the label’s 10th release and continues its experimental edge with seven cuts of outer-electronics.

In support of the release and his upcoming performances at Sónar Reykjavik—which takes place on March 16 and 17 at Harpa Concert Hall—Lord Pusswhip has offered an exclusive download of a track from his Psychoplasmics side project with his age-old best friend and fellow producer Alfreð Drexler. Titled “Berlin Nights,” it’s a deep and melancholic cut perfect for the hazy early morning hours.

You can download “Berlin Nights” via WeTransfer below.

Sónar Reykjavik will also feature performances from Bjarki, Underworld, Ben Frost, Jlin, Kiasmos, Tokimonsta, Danny Brown, and many more. You can find more information and tickets here

Berlin Nights

Premiere: Hear a Meditative Techno Track from Chaotic Reality

CHREAL01 is the debut project by anonymous Scottish producer Chaotic Reality, exploring a meditative side to techno. Written over the course of several months spent living in New York, CHREAL01 contains four tracks that repeat, oscillate, and “soundtrack a more centred existence.” Inspirations for the work include Shinichi Atobe, Avalon Emerson, Newworldaquarium / Ross154, The 7th Plain. Each track in this self-released record is named after its sequence and operates at a slower tempo, focussing on melody and sound design, particularly the “space between dub techno and early trance”

In support of the release, the artist has shared “Two,” which has an “introspective focus,” rarely reaching more than two kicks per four bars. An arpeggiated lead centres the composition, slowly developing over a thick bassline. Distant snaps and pops season the track, highlighting the empty breathing space intentionally left in the production.

Tracklisting:

A1. One
A2. Two
B1. Three
B2. Four

CHREAL01 EP will land on March 30, with “Two” streaming in full via the player below.

Premiere: Hear a New Remix From Cassegrain

Italian duo Mathame will drop their latest EP on Fur Coat’s Oddity Records.

Titled At The Doors Of Those Spaces, the EP follows a string of esteemed releases on Anagram, ARTS, and Afterlife Records with three original cuts inspired by “the clear and clean stars above the Mount Etna active volcano in South Italy,” alongside remixes from Locked Groove and Cassegrain. Keeping in tune with the label’s ethos, the tracks on At The Doors Of Those Spaces all sit at the darker end of the sonic spectrum, blending deep and rolling low-end grooves with twisting synth lines and razor-sharp percusion.

The EP will be available on March 16 on 12″ and digitally. Ahead of the release, the label has offered up a full stream of Cassegrain’s galloping remix of “Striker,” available to hear via the player below.

Rival Consoles Shares Otherworldly New Music Video

Ryan Lee West (a.k.a Rival Consoles) has today shared an otherworldly music video for “Untravel,” directed by Misha Shyukin and taken from his new album, Persona, set for release on April 13 via Erased Tapes.

The title Persona was inspired by Ingmar Bergman’s film of the same name, specifically a shot in the opening credits of a child reaching out to touch a woman’s face on a screen, which is shifting between one face and another. This powerful image struck West and it inspired the album’s main theme—an exploration of the persona, the difference between how we see ourselves and how others see us, the spaces in between; “between states, people, light and dark, the inner persona and the outer persona,” the label adds.

Shyukin had this to share on “Untravel”:

“The “Untravel” video was greatly inspired by the music itself and Ryan’s idea behind it. We were exploring ways of visualizing the feeling of being lost and ennui, experimenting with various techniques of distorting the footage in order to intensify the experience of a disoriented feeling in a strange and unknown landscape, yet maintaining a constant forward motion while examining the desolate world.”

Recorded at his studio in south-east London, Persona benefits from Ryan’s exploration of a dynamic production process that combines analogue-heavy synthesizers, acoustic and electric instruments with “a shoegaze-level obsession with effect pedals.” We’re told that a “greater depth of emotion and confidence can be heard across the album. It follows the success of a series of releases, including the Odyssey and Sonne EPs, long player Howl, and 2016’s mini album Night Melody.

Maceo Plex Mixes fabric 98

The next fabric mix will come from Maceo Plex (a.k.a Eric Estornel), landing April 20.

This compilation features productions by elusive artists like Perestroika and Pinch to minimal wave bands like Iron Curtain and techno artists Jon Hester and Mike Ink. There are also 13 exclusive tracks such as Maceo Plex edits and unreleased tracks as his Mariel Ito alias, in addition to material from his Ellum Audio and Lone Romantic imprints.

We’re told that the release is a “great representation of a man that loves to venture between multiple styles and creatively put them together in a way that somehow sounds cohesive and yet effortless in its design.”

“fabric is easily one of my favourite clubs in the world and favourite CD series. I wanted to be my organic self and fit as much of the music I love into a modest 80 minutes. That required a bit of digging and mashing up of sounds, but I knew it would be doing the series a great disservice to take the task lightly. 12 years ago I went to fabric in the wee morning hours after playing a small gig as Mariel Ito and saw Ricardo Villalobos surrounded by a sea of bobbing heads in the darkness and a blaringly intense sound system. I knew that morning I needed to work harder and somehow get to play that room someday. Adding my name to this list of respected artists and the rich history of the iconic series is special to me and I am glad to be part of it.” — Maceo Plex
