SXM Festival Rallies to Rescue and Rebuild Saint Martin

As most of those around the world are aware, a devastating hurricane has been tearing through the Carribean and southern parts of the East Coast of the USA. Some of the worst hit locations include Saint Martin, which was home to this year’s SXM Festival. As relief efforts across the globe grow, SXM Festival has issued a statement and plea to help those in the Carribean.

“Imagine the worst possible scenario and it is worse than that. IRMA, the most powerful hurricane ever recorded, has left a path of devastation in the Caribbean and continues to threaten many more communities.

“The full force of IRMA was felt as the eye passed over Saint Martin, the pearl of the Caribbean. Our hearts are with everyone who has been affected by this massive storm and to those who are in her path. At this time we are concentrating our efforts in raising funds to assist with the basic needs of our brothers and sisters on Saint Martin as we are intimately connected to the people and the island.“The damage has been monumental as 95% of the infrastructure has been reported destroyed. There is another storm developing in the wake of IRMA and the people are vulnerable. There are no electricity or water services and no radio. In association with the Dutch and French tourism boards on the island, our fundraising will be directed to where it is needed most. As the official fundraising campaign, we are in close touch with the government to assess their needs.“We ask for your help and generosity now and as we continue to support the island through its reconstruction. Our goal has always been to bring joy and love to this special island and now we need to do this more than ever. We have had so much support from Saint Martin to build our dream festival and now it is our turn to help. Third Culture Kings ‘Love Come Down’

Last month, 100.000/Internet & Weed released the debut album from Third Culture Kings, titled Is That Light You Carry?.

Third Culture Kings is the new project led by Jan Johansen (Glorybox) and Alap Momin (dälek), which looks to add a modern interpretation of acts such as The Velvet Underground or Leonard Cohen “as if they had been mixed by King Tubby and Afrika Bambaataa.” This diverse set of influences and touchstones gives the project a free-for-all launching pad, resulting in borderless fusion of post-punk, drone, metal, hip-hop, and more left-leaning electronics.

Adding to the free nature of the release, nearly every sound on the record—besides the lead vocals and guitar—was created or recorded directly to an iPhone, with Momin creating the beats, bass, and most of the synth lines on his device. Johansen would then record backing vocals, guitar, vibraphone, piano, horns, rhodes, and melodica as voice memos on his iPhone, which were eventually dropped on top of the finished tracks.

Download a New Mix From Dubokaj

Dubokaj has shared a deep and varied mix for download.

The mix follows July’s Dubokaj Meets Fortune Shumba album, which was recorded in collaboration between Dubokaj and the South African songwriter and vocalist over a three–month stay in Johannesburg, where Dubokaj set up a makeshift studio to record with local artists, whilst exploring the scene with Tshepang Ramoba of the mighty BLK JKS. A direct relation to the album, the mix is a collection of new and old dub styles, all stitched together with Dubokaj’s deft hand.

Premiere: Hear a New Track From The Mole

The Mole is the latest artist to step up for Sound Of Vast.

His latest EP, Potatoes and Beans, follows a string of standout releases on Sound Of Vast from The People In Fog, label head Red Pig Flower, and Vid, and represents the 12th release on the Amsterdam-based Japanese label.

Potatoes and Beans is plastered full of The Mole’s idiosyncratic style, with four tracks that range from the title track’s disco-tinged, organic rhythms to the loose and swinging “Lonely Security Man” and the low-slung grooves and gritty drums of “Help.”

The EP will be available on vinyl and digitally on September 11 and can be pre-ordered here, with “Help” streaming in full via the player below.

Shlømo Shares Blissful Ambient Live Set

Shlømo launched his new ambient project under his full name Shaun Baron-Carvais‘ at Berlin Atonal a few weeks ago and has now shared the entire debut set.

Shlømo is at the heart of the French techno underground. In just a couple of years he has swiftly emerged with his own distinctive sound, mostly on his own Taapion Records but also on influential labels like Delsin, Singular Records, and Arts Collective. Balancing real feeling with all important dancefloor function, his sets and productions marry stark moods with absorbing atmospheres.

Native Instruments Announces New Maschine and Kontrol Hardware

Native Instruments has announced the details for the next generation of MASCHINE and KOMPLETE KONTROL hardware.

Key additions and updates on the MASCHINE Mk3 include two high-resolution color screens to aid with editing, sample-slicing, and more. The new hardware also adds more function buttons and larger pads—although, these will retain the same layout for those who have built finger drumming muscle memory. For enhanced convenience and portability, the unit will now also feature a built-in 96kHz / 24-bit audio interface, with audio ins and outs.

In regards to the KOMPLETE KONTROL Mk2 units, Native Instruments have extended the original keyboard’s workflow with 17 additional function buttons and two high-resolution color screens for browsing, previewing sounds, and more. You can also now mix, navigate, and edit projects directly from the hardware with updated DAW integration. Other key additions include new pitch and mod wheels, plus a horizontal touch strip for additional expression.

All new units will be available at the NI online shop and retailers from October 5, with pre-orders starting today. Pricing remains the same as the previous versions in all markets:

Paris-based record shop, agency, label, and distributor Yoyaku has lined up four new releases.

Yoyaku, a mother to various sub-labels, has developed quite a reputation through a string of strong releases over the past few years, and these next few months will Roger Gerressen, HOSTOM, Vincen, and YYY. all return.

Killawatt EP Next on 47

Matthew Watts (a.k.a Killawatt) will release a new EP on Tommy Four Seven‘s 47, 47012.

47 is a regular event run by Tommy Four Seven. The 47 label showcases original tracks by past guests, both established and emerging, released on a series of solo and various artist EPs.

47012 lands after 47010, Watts’ first solo four-tracker for the label released earlier this year, and VSK‘s 47011 EP.

We’re told to expect “percussive heavy background to influence his take on modern dancefloor material with bone rattling rhythms with stirring overtones and ruptured drum patterns.”

Atom™ and J.F. Burma Next on The Bunker New York

The Bunker New York label has announced new releases from Atom™ and J.F. Burma, both dropping September 29.

Uwe Schmidt has long been recognized as one of electronic music’s most respected and versatile artists. A man of many talents, projects and identities including Atom Heart and Señor Coconut, Uwe’s playfully ironic and acid-tinged Atom™ moniker is perhaps the identity that most speaks to the New York dancefloors where The Bunker makes its home. Several Atom™ releases are much-loved Bunker classics and his latest EP, Future Nights, “offers a heady experiment in what happens when a track takes you so far inside your own head that you’re in danger of losing your way back,” the label explains.

Meanwhile, J. F. Burma is a new analog synth project of Jeremy Berman, a longtime friend of The Bunker who we met via the forums of I-F’s Cybernetic Broadcasting System internet radio station in the early 2000s. While living in Brooklyn, Jeremy spent many hours each week searching for undiscovered gems among the piles of records at notorious Greenpoint crate-digging spot The Thing. Inspired and educated by the music he was finding, he purchased his first modular and started building synthesizers and modules in spite of his lack of training in electrical engineering. Currently, about half of his current Eurorack rig has been DIYed via trial and error.

Jeremy put out his first EP on Shaddock Records under the name Factory Aire in 2013. After a move to Los Angeles and the birth of his daughter, Jeremy’s music production took a bit of a back seat and The Bunker New York will now release the Nomadic EP, his first record produced under the influence of a toddler. All three tracks have a very live feel as Jeremy draws most of his inspiration from interacting with the music machines during late night jam sessions: “When I’m jamming out I tend to gravitate towards trippier vibes, which is just a reflection of my personal affinity for acid and psychedelic music.”

Orson Wells ‘Hemisphere Pt.2’

As announced, Orson Wells has signed to Live At Robert Johnson for an album, Pneumatics.

Pneumatics is, after releases at Innervisions, Die Orakel, and his own label Sound Mirror, the debut album of Orson Wells (as long as you don’t count in Jupiter – Wells’ first LP which was released in 2014 with 48 copies on cassette). He has previously released on the Frankfurt label before, with a 2013 EP and another in 2014. He also appeared on that label’s compilation in 2015.

The label describes Pneumatics as “post-retro futuristic,” uniting electro, downtempo and ambient over the course of 12 tracks.
