Meander Celebrates 10 Years with ‘Family Jubilee II’

DeWalta‘s Meander label will celebrate 10 years with a three-disk compilation featuring unreleased tracks from Ion Ludwig, Vlad Caia, Cristi Cons, DeWalta himself, and more.

DeWalta, real name David Koch, launched the imprint in 2007 aiming to release “carefully selected deep techno and adventurous house music on vinyl.” Over the course of the past decade, he has released a wealth of quality material and turned the label into one of minimal music’s must respected platforms.

The compilation lands five years after the initial Family Jubilee, which landed in October 2012. The result is a collection of 3 x 180g vinyl records. All discs are available individually, with limited special artwork. As a package, it forms a “distinctive reflection of Meander’s momentum,” says the label.

The release is the latest in a string of collaborations between the pair after they began working together in 1992 when Tresor released 3MB” feat. Magic Juan Atkins. In 2013, after a 20-year hiatus, they returned with Borderland, a record inspired by the Uckermark, or “borderland,” region of northern Germany—before they released the Transport LP last year.

Angles is a two-tracker consisting of two new tracks, both produced after the release of Transport.

Tracklisting

A. Concave 1
B. Concave 2

Angles is scheduled for July 14 release, with samples available here.

Gadi Mitrani ‘Drifter’

Earlier this month, Istanbul-based label High Above the Ground released its first compilation, You Are Instanbul #1.

Featuring cuts from Koray T, Eren Erdol, Gadi Mitrani, and Coşkun Akmeriç feat. Soyut Boyut, the compilation was released to promote the sounds of Istanbul outside of Turkey and to build an awareness about the Turkish dance music scene. From Koray T’s deep and groovy “Colorful World” to Coşkun Akmeriç’s tripped out “Slow Burning,” which also features electronic jazz trio Soyut Boyut, You Are Instanbul #1 shows that the city houses an exciting underground and a collection of world-class producers.

In support of the release, the label has offered up Kompakt artist Gadi Mitrani’s “Drifter” as today’s XLR8R download. Like the other tracks on the release, “Drifter” is a groove-led slice of deep house, with Mitrani focusing on atmospheric pads and well-placed vocal chops to deliver his message.

You can grab “Drifter” via WeTransfer below, with the EP available here.

Watch a Jaw-Dropping Video From Fabrizio Rat

On Friday, Fabrizio Rat will release his debut album, The Pianist, via Blackstrobe Records.

The Pianist follows 2016’s La Machina EP and this year’s Technopiano EP, released by Optimo and Involve Records, respectively. The Pianist stays true to the stylistic cues presented on its predecessors, a style driven by Fabrizio’s prepared piano, TB-303, and the TR-909. The eight tracks on The Pianist explore the same mind-bending cosmic terrain as artists such as Jeff Mills and Hauschka; although, Fabrizio’s prepared piano gives his music a singular sound that is at once haunting and mesmerizing.

Alongside the album announcement, Fabrizio has shared a video for album cut “Aimard.” Directed by Alessandro Arianti and Francesco Mori, the video gives some insight into the inspiring methods used by Fabrizio and a look at his transfixing live show.

You can watch the video in full via the player above, with the album available for preorder here.

Premiere: Hear a Warped New Cut From Only Now

The latest from San Fransisco-based DJ and producer Kush Arora‘s Only Now project is set to drop on Infinite Machine on June 30.

Over the last few years, both Infinite Machine and the projects from Arora have proved to be XLR8R favorites, with numerous premieres and free downloads featuring across the site. The latest, an EP titled Timeslave, is no different; built from seven mind-bending tracks, it finds both the label and Arora in typically boundary-pushing form.

The Only Now project focuses on esoteric, ritualistic rhythms and sounds; as Arora states, it’s “power music for the spirit and body.” The latest outing, Timeslave, puts this focus into overdrive, presenting a collection of cuts filled with mind-bending tribal percussion and bass so heavy that it shakes the walls.

In support of the EP, Infinite Machine has offered up a full stream of “Bound,” a devilish percussive steamroller that can be heard via the player below.

Javier Orduna ‘Villa Fiesta’

Podcast 496: Chaos In The CBD

New Zealand brothers Ben and Louis Helliker-Hales have been working together for the past eight years, producing and DJing informed house under the name Chaos In The CBD. The duo work with motifs drawn from the historical continuum of house music, paying homage to the timeless classics of the dance music spectrum.

Their relocation to London in 2012 brought with it a string of well-received records through independent labels such as ClekClekBoom, Amadeus, Needwant and Hot Haus Recordings. Recently, in 2015, the brothers had somewhat of an international breakthrough year after releasing stellar EPs for London labels Church and Rhythm Section International. Both releases demonstrated the pair’s penchant for starry-eyed, jazz-inflicted deep house, a sound they have been honing since 2011. Early 2016 then saw the release of their most recent record Digital Harmony on Mule Musiq further enhancing the pair’s ears for complex, organic sounding drums mixed with tonal elements helping to create warm, hazy dancefloor excursions.

With their ever-strengthening production credentials, the brothers have been able to mark themselves out as one of the most eminent duos to emerge out of the South Pacific—and now we welcome to the XLR8R pages with a dreamy downtempo mix perfect for easy listening over the summer months.

Chaos In The CBD will be at Farr Festival alongside names including Craig Richards, Young Marco, and more. More information here.

Talk to us about the background of the Chaos in the CBD project, and your musical background?

It’s almost been a decade since we first came up with the concept. At the time we were in a high school band together, having recently discovered electronic music. It was completely new to us and very exciting. I like to think we’ve grown pretty organically since then. Developed our knowledge of music, adapted our sound etc. We’re very happy with where we’re at at the moment.

How would you describe your musical style?

Deep house music.

What’s your production setup like nowadays — and how much time do you spend in the studio?

Now that we’re touring more, Beans doesn’t get as much time in the studio. We do our best to set aside Monday to Wednesday for making music. This can be a little difficult if we’re coming off the back of a busy weekend but we’ve just had to find a way to make it work.

We already have this year mapped out, meaning we’re able to work at a leisurely pace. I think starting our own label has been really important for us too—it’s allowed us more control and we’re not as restricted by time commitments.

Our production setup is pretty basic, a few bits of outboard gear and a copy of Ableton live on an old PC. It does the trick, though!

When and where was the mix recorded?

This was a bit of a nightmare to be fair. We recorded the mix at our place, hit play once we had finished. The result sounded like two lawnmowers having a tussle and naturally we had to re-record it. Thankfully Bradley Zero let us use his setup.

Where and when is the mix supposed to be listened to?

We tried to maintain a nice balance of old and new. Conceptually, I suppose we wanted the selection to represent our lifestyle and attitude growing up in New Zealand. London is surprisingly hot at the moment and it’s hard not to reminisce about life back home.

How does it compare to a regular club set?

We don’t really get to play warm up sets these days. It’s how we learned how to DJ and we both miss it a lot. Things changed once we moved to Europe. When we play nowadays, we like to play high energy sets, so podcasts like this are a nice way for us to express our diverse tastes a little more.

What have you got planned for 2017—is an album on the way?

No album as of yet but we have three EPs mastered and ready to go (a few of those tracks can be heard in this mix). Two of them will be on our own label, the other on Mule Musiq. We’ll also be releasing a few more remixes this year. That and plenty more touring; we’re heading back to North America early September, followed by Asia, and Australasia.
