Premiere: Hear a Deep New Remix from Vakula

On June 16, Italian label Oltrarno Recordings will release Cook Ting, the new EP by Stefano Meucci and Guido Silvestri (a.k.a. Ural).

Cook Ting will be the fourth release on Oltrarno, following on from a VA and outings by Soutine and Raccoglimento Parziale. Like the releases preceding it, Cook Ting is filled with warped, ritualistic rhythms and stunning synth work, with a deep remix by Vakula backing up the three originals.

Cook Ting will be vinyl only and can be purchased here, with Vakula’s remix streaming in full via the player below.

Federico Molinari Returns to Pressure Traxx

Argentina’s Federico Molinari has released a new EP on Pressure Traxx.

Molinari is something of a prolific studio producer who boasts a wealth of quality material to his name. Much of this has been shared between labels of friends, including Melisma, Apollonia, and Epilog; although the majority of his cuts have arrived on Oslo, the imprint he co-founded with Nekes as “a way to express their own ideas of electronic music,” and also as a “homebase” for their own productions and those of friends. Within just a few years of its 2007 launch, Oslo had gained widespread both in Europe and further afield for its superb and original releases.

His latest release, however, comes through Pressure Traxx, a label where he has previously released once before.

Felipe Valenzuela and Dani Casarano Team Up for New EP

Melisma and Cure Music are set to release a new collaborative limited edition vinyl to welcome summer, featuring tracks from Felipe Valenzuela and Dani Casarano.

Felipe Valenzuela and Dani Casarano have been responsible for their fair share of discerning electronic music over the years. As well as sharing a keen understanding behind the decks, the pair also share a similar ear for clued-in house music, the likes of which immediately comes to the fore on the debut release for their new imprint, Melcure. A double-A sided affair featuring a production from each producer, Melcure000 is characterized by its heady, dancefloor vibes, the likes of which are very much apparent on both tracks.

Kicking off the release is the sound of Dani Casarano’s “Newboli.” A moody number full of intricate parts, it’s just as likely to demand your attention thanks to its unlikely piano stabs as it is its ravey synth stabs. On the other side, Felipe Valenzuela also impresses courtesy of the equally delicate “009.” A deep number full of intoxicating synths and bumping grooves, it too is sure to keep dancers guessing thanks to an array of carefully introduced hypnotic elements.

Tracklisting

A1. Dani Casarano “Newboli”
B1. Felipe Valenzuela “009 Mix”

Ahead of the EP’s June 23 release, Dani Casarano’s “Newboli” is exclusively streamable in full below, with snippets of both cuts also available here.

Stream Bruno Pronsato’s First LP in Six Years

As announced, Bruno Pronsato is set to return with his first new artist album in six years.

US Drag is the follow-up to 2011’s Lovers Do, lauded by Pitchfork as a “massive and striking statement,” and decorated with a 4.5/5 rating by Resident Advisor.

The new record, which sees the ex-punk rock drummer exploring unorthodox tuning systems and dense, maximal rhythms, was recorded in Berlin during the second half of 2016 and features a collaboration with Liars’ frontman Angus Andrew.

After the vast, complex arrangements of his previous albums, the nine recordings on US Drag are “more upfront and direct,” says the label, “with a particular focus on bells, tuned percussion and the Sequential Circuits Six-Trak synthesizer (used to create many of the album’s synth parts).”

Pronsato’s ongoing collaboration with Yonatan Levi continues, with the Israeli bassist appearing on two tracks on the album.

Download a Trippy New Mix from Giesse

Giesse has DJing for over a decade and has been a member of cultural association Dancity since 2010. Nowadays, he is the resident DJ at Serendipity Club in Italy’s Foligno, and co-founder of The label HomeMadeZucchero. He is widely recognized as a rising Italian talent, one who is truly committed to his work—and has compiled a new studio mix which is available to download below.

Giesse will be performing at Dancity Festival alongside Call Super, Dorisburg, Hieroglyphic Being. This year’s edition takes place from June 30 to July 2 in Foligno, Italy, with more information available here.

When and where was the mix recorded?

I have been recording this mix during the past week inside Serendipity’s main room, the club for which I have played as DJ resident for the past six years. I have chosen to record there as I don’t have CDJ at home, and the mix consists of tracks on both files and vinyl. Anyway, making a podcast inside a club I know this well turned out to be an interesting and fun experience as you can imagine how the public would effectively react to it.

Could you tell us about the idea behind it?

I wanted to make a mix that could briefly represent what I like to play lately. The first half of it is quite slow, but then it gets to 150 bpm without becoming way too aggressive. Lately, I prefer playing ‘’uptempo’’ DJ sets that can be at the same time somehow smooth; usually, these comprehend various records by artists I admire and artistically appreciate, especially Italian ones.

How did you choose the records in it?

I usually begin by selecting tracks carefully: I don’t record a lot of podcasts and those times I do, I tend to spend a lot of time on the musical choice. On the other hand, during the recording phase, I like it to be all as much spontaneous as possible, both the mix and the choice of the following track. Basically, the main work for me is to be done before the set itself. I’d rather go around with few records but carefully selected.

How does the mix compare to one of your club mixes?

The substantial difference for me is that during podcast sessions I can express and convey my most personal and intimate taste, whilst in front of an audience I tend to create an action and reaction sort of exchange, driving the people to appreciate what I like too.

What have you got planned for 2017?

During this month I have been mainly focusing on the production of Dancity Festival. In the meantime, I keep working with our label HomeMadeZucchero, run by me and my friend Meze, who released last week his new EP, of which one of the tracks is also featured in my mix. For HomeMadeZucchero we are also preparing our fourth release: it will be my first 12’’ on the label, and I really can’t wait for it to be out.

Hi-Five: Etapp Kyle

Etapp Kyle‘s 2016 submission to the XLR8R podcast series was a highlight in a remarkably strong year. Alongside the mix—which was as well received as any last year—we told Kyle’s story, a journey that has taken him from Chernivtsi, a modest city in the West of Ukraine, to the dancefloors of Moscow’s ARMA17—where he served as a resident between 2011 and 2014—and now to Berlin, where he resides today.

Back then, Kyle was an exciting prospect—a rising techno artist who held affiliations with Ben Klock‘s Klockworks and was set to release on Unterton, the sub-label of Ostgut Ton. He was beginning to tour across Europe, having been recently signed to the Ostgut booking roster—the home of Steffi, Klock, Dettmann, and many more of techno’s leading names. Nowadays, having further refined his skills in the booth, he’s proven himself as an established artist in his own right, playing peak-time, opening, or closing slots at some of the world’s finest institutions. Home, however, is Berghain, the legendary Berlin club where he now boasts a residency—evidence, if ever you needed it, of his talent for musical self-expression via dark, dynamic sounds, soft melodies, and powerful grooves.

For this week’s Hi-Five feature, he’s compiled a list of his five favorite classic warm-up tracks, selections that are sure to be heard if you’ve caught him play over the past 24 months or more.

Etapp Kyle is playing in Barcelona on Friday, June 16 alongside Gerd Janson, Hunter/Game Locked Groove, KiNK, and more. More information and tickets can be found here.

Stephen Brown “Solitude” (Djax-Up-Beats)

Whenever I play an opening set I always start with ambient music and this record is the one for such purpose that has been in my bag for the longest time. Besides that, I also used this track as an intro when I played my very first set at Berghain, so it has a special place in my heart as it always recalls that night in my memories.

1991 “Harm Autumn” (Opal Tapes)

Making this list I wanted to show only the tracks which have become personal classics so most of them are at least 10 years old. This one has been released in 2012. Probably the newest in the list and probably one of the most “thoughtful” tracks in my collection in general.

Harold Budd / Brian Eno “Against the Sky” (Editions EG)

I always get stuck trying to describe Eno’s music. What can you actually say about something that special and unique? This piece makes the thoughts space out and my mind wander from the first notes. I really can’t describe it in a better way.

Andy Stott “Merciless” (Modern Love)

I really like the diversity of Andy Stott’s production. In his discography you can find the reflections of pretty much everything, starting from weird experimental broken beats and ending with beautiful piano pieces. And “Merciless” is one of those. For some re, son this track has always been stating out for me–pure beauty of piano music.

Burial “In McDonalds” (Hyperdub)

https://youtu.be/DOw62EREnCg

I’m so much in love, probably as never before in my life. She is on the stage just right behind me while I’m playing an ambient set. At some point I turn around and say: “The next one is very special” continuing moving fader up… It’s hard to put in words what we were feeling, it was one of those magic musical moments and it was this track.

Eliot Lipp ‘I Told Ya’

Later this month, Austin-based musician Eliot Lipp will release his 10th studio album, Skywave.

Lipp crafted the EP over the last several months, injecting influences from sci-fi soundtracks and ’70s and ’80s funk into a melting pot of warped, melodic beats. On the album, Lipp looks to recreate key musical moments from from his past in the creation of a complete statement of intent.

In support of the release of the LP—which also features collaborations with Emancipator, Chris Karns, Gibbs and Cherub, and Fish Tank Friends—Lipp has offered up the album’s opening cut as one of today’s XLR8R downloads. Built from loops and layers, the track is a perfect introduction and representation of the album, as Lipp explains:

“I chose this track to begin the album with because it captures my new sound in pure form. The foundation of the song is based in loops and samples but there are layers of synths swirling around as well. There’s more space, deeper tones and more depth overall.”

Skywave is out June 23 on Young Heavy Souls, with “I Told Ya” available via WeTransfer below.
