Special Request Announces New EP

Paul Woolford will release a new EP as Special Request.

Set to be released on the fabric-affiliated Houndstooth, the forthcoming six-tracker Stairfoot Lane Bunker follows hot on the heels of Special Request’s recent contribution to the Fabriclive mix series. In fact, the EP is described as an “addendum” to the mix, which featured five of its six cuts. Aside from those original works, Minor Science chips in with a remix of the title track.

Stairfoot Lane Bunker will be released April 7. Pre-order it and stream snippets at the Houndstooth store.

Tracklisting:

A1. Redrum
A2. Stairfoot Lane Bunker
A3. Telepathic Dog

Atoll ‘Ikik Pt 1’

DJ and producer Andrea Ferlin, alongside Francesco Assenza, is the founder of SLEEP IS COMMERCIAL, the world-renowned party and label with releases under its belt from artists such as Topper, DeWalta, Little Hado, Andrey Zots, and Dunkle Dummies, Ferlin’s collaborative project with fellow label head Assenza.

Ferlin’s latest endeavor is Atoll, a solo production project and label—the label has released three vinyl-only 12″ records, with number four on the way in May—that has been supported and played over the last two years by artists such as, among others, Zip, Ricardo Villalobos, Margaret Dygas, Barac, and Cabanne. Outside of the eponymous label [Atoll Music], a double vinyl EP, titled Ancient Code, is on the way in April via Mama Recordings.

Ancient Code will feature six groove-led Atoll originals, alongside a remix from Jens Zimmermann. In support of the EP, Ferlin has offered up one of the EP’s tracks, a haunting ambient cut titled “Ikik Pt 1,” as today’s XLR8R download. You can pick up “Ikik Pt 1” via WeTransfer below, with the EP available for pre-order at Decks.

Premiere: Hear a Cut from the New Repitch Compilation

Next week, Repitch Recordings will celebrate five years in existence with the 16-track Dys Functional Electronic Music compilation.

Falling in line with its title, the compilation aims to represent the label’s ethos of pushing music that deviates from the norm and common club functionalism. Headed up by the three label heads Ascion, D. Carbone, and Shapednoise, Dys Functional Electronic Music will also feature a who’s who of experimentally inclined techno, artists such as Pinch, Skudge, The Exaltics, AnD, Nuel, Sote, Zenker Brothers, Galaxion, Drvg Cvltvre, Chriss Moss Acid, Gaja, and Mike Parker.

Across the album’s 16 tracks, the label heads have curated a wide-ranging assortment of styles, everything from dark breakbeats to dense noise excursions, fractured rave, dub-infused ambience, and pummeling club techno.

To give you a taste of what’s to come, Repitch has offered up a full stream of Nuel’s dizzying “Biopunk,” available to listen via the player below.

Marco Shuttle Preps New LP

Marco Shuttle will soon release a new album, titled Systhema.

Systhema follows on from his 2014 LP Visione which arrived on his own Eerie imprint.

For the new LP, he has teamed up with the Spazio Disponible label of Donato Dozzy and Neel. According to the label, the album is “painted mainly with dark hues and with a masterful use of negative space—but it’s a darkness that provides the ideal projection surface for the kind of mental imagery that listeners might not know they had within them.” Fans of the Italian artist’s back catalog of singles (e.g. “Sing Like A Bird” or the more recent “Flauto Synthetico”) “will find much of the same drive and esoteric energy here but with that something extra which can only come with an extended amount of listening time.”

The artwork has been created by the talented NY-based artist/illustrator Neilsecluded.

Tracklisting

01. Adrift
02. Thebe
03. I Fail, You Fall
04. Eris
05. Con Sequenza
06. Venera 3
07. Olga
08. Ende

Spazio Disponibile will release Systhema on May, with “Olga” streamable below.

Take a Look at Softube’s Expansive Modular

Eurorack and modular synths have grown in popularity hugely over the past few years. However, the complexity of modular synthesis and the cost of building a rack has put it out of reach for many aspiring producers. While some software manufacturers have emulated modular synths, it’s rare to find an accurate recreation of the interface in the box.

Softube’s Modular platform—which Scott Monteith recently reviewed here—is created in conjunction with Doepfer and Intelijel and is a startlingly accurate emulation of the racks its modeled off.

In a recent video, available to watch below, Point Blank takes Softube’s Modular for a test drive.
