Concrete Gains 24-Hour License

Concrete has been granted a round-the-clock license.

Due to changes in legislation, from March 10 the Parisian riverside venue will have a 24-hour license. In celebration of the new opening times, the event organizers are launching a new 28-hour party entitled Samedimanche, set to take place once or twice a month, running from Saturday at 10PM to Monday2AM.

Launched in the French capital back in 2011, Concrete has quickly established itself as one of the most well-known house and techno parties on the European circuit. Over the next couple of months, it will host the likes of DJ Nobu, Zenker Brothers, Efdemin, Ben UFO, Prosumer, and many more.

Go Hiyama ‘Piano’

Having released on on platforms such as Token, PercTrax, Stroboscopic Artefacts, and the HueHelix imprint, Go Hiyama is back with a new LP on Parachute Records, titled I Am Goodbye.

According to the label, I Am Goodbye “graces us with wondrous sound design and drum patterns that are just as menacing as they are intricate.” The LP, the label continues, is based on the concept of denial and takes a “steep dive” into “individuality.” Steering away from what are his “canonic approaches” to producing, Go Hiyama chose to leave behind sequencers and synths to further explore the nature of instruments such as piano and vibraphone as well as an array of field recordings. The end result is an LP that allowed him to “explore areas of sound he had previously never visited.”

Ahead of the LP’s April 7 release, “Piano” is streamable below and downloadable via the WeTtransfer button, too.

“Piano was the first track I came up with when starting on I Am Goodbye. It was when the concept of denial came to mind and when emotions gradually emerged. In this track, I looked for unstableness. It denied all of my rules about music, including BPM, bar, measure, instruments, and other rules I would usually follow when making music. Through the process of production, I subsequently noticed that this allowed me to interpret the concept of denial in a positive way.”

The Suicide Of Western Culture ‘Dysplasia’ (Fairmont & Undo Remix)

Back in November of 2015, Catalonian synth masters The Suicide Of Western Culture released Long Live Death! Down With Intelligence!, their third studio album, on Primavera Sound’s imprint El Segell del Primavera. Now, just over a year later, the album returns in the form of a remix package for album cut “Dysplasia,” featuring reworks from Reykjavik 606, Pina, Pedro Vian, and Fairmont & Undo.

The remix package dropped on 12″ back in January and in support of the release, the label has graciously offered up Fairmont & Undo’s remix as today’s XLR8R download. Many of our readers will be familiar with the Fairmont & Undo, but for those who aren’t they specialize in emotive, synth-heavy dancefloor tracks. Their rework of “Dysplasia” follows much in the same suit with a deep and rolling low-end, razor-sharp percussion, and soaring synth lines—a fitting club refit to the ferocity of the original cut.

You can pick up Fairmont & Undo’s rework for free via WeTransfer below, with the remix EP available here.

Soul Clap Mix Fabric 93

Soul Clap have mixed the 93rd fabric mix CD.

Following on from recent contributions to the series by Call Super and Nina Kraviz, New York-based duo Eli Goldstein and Charles Levine (better known as Soul Clap) step up with a 34-track mix for the fabric series. Aside from a host of their own original productions, the pair keep things as diverse as ever, with selections from the likes of Life On Planets, Youandewan and Ken Gill.

On the mix, Soul Clap stated: “It’s a huge honor to do a fabric mix and we wanted to make it special, and paint a picture of our eclectic musical world, but stay rooted in house music. We have so many memories at fabric and this mix represents the music that we play there, faster tempo, more electronic drums, deep and trippy sounds. But we still believe that mixes should be appropriate to listen to at home, on your headphones, or at an afterparty getting silly with friends; energetic, but always gentle.”

Frank Wiedemann and RY X Return as Howling

Frank Wiedemann and RY X are set to return as Howling with “Phases,” the first new music from their forthcoming full-length.

The duo released their debut album Sacred Ground in 2014 to widespread acclaim—and “Phases” is the first new Howling material since then. Released digitally on March 8, 2017 on Counter Records alongside a club version of the original, the single will be followed by remixes from Alex.Do (Dystopian) and Toto Chiavetta (Innervisions) which will see a vinyl and digital release via Innervisions.

“We began this track with a few synths and some obscure vinyl samples when we had some time together in California in an old wood and stone house looking down over the sea… everything was recorded there with all the beautiful scratch and hiss of a lounge room with windows open to the world… we shaped it further playing it live, learned how it needed to flow and gently coerced it when we could in Berlin and Ibiza and anywhere we found ourselves in between… it found its way to its many forms and carries all those places and moments with it now..”

In advance of the release, XLR8R caught up with the duo.

Tell us a bit about what you have both been up to since 2015’s “Sacred Ground” LP?

Expanding in so many ways. Making music and art with all of our projects and growing our worlds both in and outside of work and music. Touring, learning, producing, business, surfing, travel, yoga, and too many emails.

You and Frank are located miles apart (Berlin and LA). Do you both take influences from these musically diverse cities?

We do, yes. And also I think we both consider ourselves people that don’t belong only to one place. We travel most of the year to tour and create, so the experiences and influence is born not just of LA and Berlin, but from the myriad of experiences and places in between.

Is it hard finding time to get together and record? How often do you get in the studio together?

We make a big effort to see each other whenever we are close geographically, and we create and write in strong focus in these periods. We set up recording studios in houses or lofts or barns wherever we can, and then direct our energy into more structured studios at times, too. We both believe in capturing the essence of a song in its creation, wherever/whenever that happens. The important thing is the dedication to creating space and time for that to process to unfold. And so we arc for that as much as possible.

What have you both been listening to lately? Any tips one what we should be checking out?

We both tend to listen to what we are making a lot, individually and together, it’s a big part of the creative process, to examine and better understand your own works. Beyond that, there is always a lot of African music, modern minimal composers, ambient, and of course techno made by our friends.

Giegling, Ambiq, Ricardo Villalobos, Nathan Fake, and More to Play at Berlin’s Funkhaus

Berlin’s Funkhaus has revealed its upcoming dates, including shows from GieglingHauschka, Nathan Fake, Ambiq, and more.

Berlin’s Funkhaus boasts a long and cultured history. Having been designed by a team of acousticians and Bauhaus architect Franz Ehrlicht, it was built during the 1950s as a multi-purpose broadcasting campus for the GDR’s state radio. Funkhaus served its purpose for many years before ceasing all radio transmissions in the late months of 1989 at the fall of the Berlin wall, after which the building—situated on the banks of the Spree in the city’s Treptow-Köpenick district—was left unused, leaving one of the world’s largest finest purpose-built recording complexes all but abandoned. Since then, various production teams have made use of the space; and, now under new ownership, it continues to house a variety of musical projects, including symphony orchestras, choirs, and artists from pop and electronic music. Although the studios are designed specifically with recording in mind, the main hall does host live performances.
