Podcast 714: Soela

Soela is the alias of Elina Shorokhova, a Russian vocalist who has transitioned into electronic music with releases through the likes of Kompakt, Shall Not Fade, and Sushitech. Last year, Lawrence signed her to his mighty Dial Records with Genuine Silk, an 11-track exploration into the deepest shades house and ambient, and just recently she’s put out two melodic house cuts on Fort Romeau’s Cin Cin.

Growing up in southern Russia, Shorokhova was encouraged to learn the piano and sing by her mother, but by the age of 19, she’d left it behind in order to DJ in local clubs. Far from the sophisticated beats she’s known for today, she found herself playing “cheesy Russian remixed pop hits,” but slowly her ears matured. After she began creating her own tracks using a basic bedroom setup during her 20s, she fought hard to find a label for them and eventually things clicked. She followed up four dub techno jams on Köln’s Subspiele Records with 2017’s IDM-inspired Nothing EP and the more upbeat Early Bird EP on E-Beamz. By the time she delivered 2019’s Lily EP on Kompakt, her sound had crystallized into a melodic and emotional breed of house music.

Now based in Berlin, Germany, Shorokhova spends the majority of her time either making music or playing it out, but during the week she can be found teaching children how to make it in a local school. To celebrate her latest release, she’s compiled an XLR8R podcast, using it as an homage to some of her greatest artist inspirations—the likes of Lefar Legov, Robag Wruhme, Donato Dozzy, and Move D. As it moves through house and experimental electronica, you’ll find comfort in the calming rhythms and a floating melancholic groove that feels like a warm hug in these colder late-summer months.

01. What have you been up to recently?

I’ve done a lot of things, not all connected to music. I’ve moved from one flat to another, found a new job after a long break, and come back to school as a music teacher. So I was into some basic but still nice things.

02. What have you been listening to?

I’ve been listening to a lot of records because it’s kind of a ritual. One of the favorite records of all time is Loop Finding Jazz Records by Jan Jelinek. Also, I’ve been listening to some Lusine, Lawrence, Alice Coltrane, John Roberts, Move D, and Pearson Sound. I also love to listen to the Recorder13 podcast series; the guys are doing a great job finding amazing artists and highlighting some new names.

03. What appeals to you about electronic music?

Unlimited possibilities for making sounds.

04. How did you sign to Dial Records?

I wasn’t actually going to send my music to Dial because I thought the guys would never answer me, but my boyfriend said that if I don’t try I’ll never know. I was super shy but I wrote to Lawrence’s Instagram and asked if I can send some music to him. Later we met at Heidegluhen and right before he came to the club I received a message that he and David (a.k.a Carsten Jost) wanted to see my album on Dial. I think now that my story about the signing is quite boring, but I was literally jumping for joy!

05. You’ve got some new material landing on a Fort Romeau’s Cin Cin. What can you tell us about it?

It’s a two-track EP inspired by German minimalistic music from the 2000s. I love this kind of vibe. You can hear a track from this EP in the mix, by the way!

06. Where and when did you record this mix

On Saturday, September 11, at my apartment in Berlin.

07. What can we expect with the mix?

A journey full of light melancholy.

08. What setup did you use?

Ableton Live, Stanton turntables, and Beyerdynamic headphones.

09. How did you go about choosing the tracks that you’ve included?

When I make a mix I usually look for tracks for a long time, several months or so. I like to make multi-genre mixes, that’s why it usually takes time. But this one is a bit different: I still found some new treasures for it, but I decided to compile the music I already had, and make an eclectic podcast using music created by well-known and beloved artists like Leafar Legov, Lawrence, Robag Wruhme, Donato Dozzy, Move D, Federsen, and Martin Schulte.

10. What’s next on your horizon?

A new album and some amazing collaborations.

Anthony Naples Experiments with Live Instrumentation on New Studio Album

Anthony Naples will release Chameleon, his new album, later this week.

Chameleon is the New York artist’s fourth full-length, following 2019’s Fog FM, which also landed on his own ANS label. It represents the first time Naples has written the songs on instruments first, including guitar, bass, and synthesizer. He recorded it at Incienso studios “every once and a while” between November 2019 and March 2021.

“Through changing well worn musical habits and endless jammin’,” a new side of the Naples sound revealed itself as “liquid, phased-out, in-studio magic,” we’re told.

Outside of ANS, Naples heads up record label Incienso with Jenny Slattery, and in October they’ll release the new album of Marco Shuttle.

Jamaica Suk, BNJMN, and Kyoka Feature on ‘XLR8R+033,’ a Techno Special

We’re delighted to launch the 33rd edition of XLR8R+, a techno special.

With this month’s selections, we’ve decided to deliver music from two artists we’ve supported a lot in the past, Jamaica Suk and BNJMN, originating from San Francisco and Bournemouth, England respectively. Our third artist is someone we’ve discovered more recently: Kyoka, a Japanese producer signed to Raster-Noton. Now we’ve discovered her, there’s no going back; each track in this special collection explores a different facet of the broader techno realm.

We begin the collection with Suk’s “Dream Delusions,” a cerebral dancefloor experience that is at once physical, emotive, and captivating, defined by dizzying sound design and razor-sharp percussion. (For those interested in learning exactly how she made it, Suk has shared her Ableton Live project too, available for download!) For the next track, BNJMN’s “Second Charm,” Ben Thomas takes things deeper with a sophisticated slice of techno characterized by subtle rhythmic fluctuations and a sense of space that is felt rather than heard. To close, Kyoka has delivered two different mixes of a new track produced specifically for this edition. One is a white-knuckle ride and the other is more of a late-night spectacle that utilizes an ever-morphing rolling groove for maximum dancefloor effect.

The artwork this month comes from Jamie Gorman, an illustrator and graphic designer based in London. As is customary now, the art is also available as an NFT, so go grab it via the button below. Currently, each NFT is available for one month, and only subscribers of that particular month will have access to the NFT, with the unclaimed NFTs being burned.

Mastering comes from Kamran Sadeghi.

Thanks for your continued support.

Podcast 713: Bambounou

Bambounou, the alias of Jéremy Guindo-Zegiestowski, has long been recognized as one of Europe’s most singular and innovative DJ-producers, a man known for distilling his love for astrophysics and dystopian sci-fi into futuristic interpretations of UK techno, IDM, and tribal. Away from the now-defunct 50Weapons, where he released two albums and five EPs between 2012 and 2015, he’s a staple of AD93 (f.k.a Whities), having in 2019 delivered a collection of tracks he’d made for an appearance at Freerotation festival. He returned to Nic Tasker’s esteemed London label last year with 033, underlining his flair for minimalistic bass rhythms and impeccable groove. During lockdown, he’s also launched his own Bambe label with four mesmerizing rhythmic cuts and delivered a collaborative EP with Bruce.

Raised by his Polish mother in one of Paris’ less affluent south-eastern suburbs, Guindo-Zegiesto’s relationship with music began with French rap, punk, and metal, but techno gripped him as he began sneaking into local parties during his rebellious teenage years. As he listened to DJs spin each weekend, he became curious about producing this type of music himself so he started messing around on a cracked version of Fruity Loops, learning through friends like Teki Latex and Valentino Canzani Mora (a.k.a French Fries) before surfacing in 2010 with records on local labels like YounGunZ and ClekClekBoom. His sound was instantly recognizable because of its inventive drum patterns, which he imports from his Malian heritage on his father’s side, and within two years Modeselektor had asked him to prepare an EP for their 50Weapons label.

Recorded in a library—yes, you read that correctly—Bambounou’s XLR8R podcast is a little different from the mixes he’s put out before. With more than a year away from touring, and having just become a father, he used this opportunity to reconnect with the electronic music that he loves, digging into the tracks that he enjoys listening to—not necessarily the ones he feels he should play for a DJ set. You can expect just under an hour of intricate, bass-heavy rhythms and loopy house and techno from the likes of Lurka, Soreab, and Konduku.

01. What have you been up to recently?

Hey all, recently I’ve been finally finding a good balance between family, music, and sports. I have a routine that I love and gigs are slowly coming back; I couldn’t be happier to be honest!

02. What have you been listening to during the pandemic?

To be totally honest I haven’t been listening to a lot of music. I’ve had to take care of my one-year-old so I’ve mainly been listening to a lot of child’s music, like “Baby Shark” and stuff like that.

03. How have you adapted to life away from touring?

Well, now that I am a father I’ve focused myself on the kids which has kind of saved me from any form of depression for not having my ego flattered by a crowd every weekend.

04. Where and when did you record this mix?

I don’t have a studio anymore and I didn’t have space to work from home so I actually went to a library next to my place to do it. I did it on very low volume which is paradoxical but it made me focus on each transition and the way I wanted the mix to go; there’s a contrast between the people working around you and you blasting music in your head!

05. What setup did you use?

My laptop and Rekordbox’s in-house mixing desk. I’ve never focused on having a proper mixing setup because I’m normally mixing every weekend.

06. Tell us about it: what can the listener expect?

A nice journey through the music I love but that I play when I feel like the crowd will understand it. That’s not to sound pretentious or anything, but sometimes you’ve just got to play 140bpm techno and everyone is happy.

07. How did you go about choosing the tracks that you’ve included?

Not too obvious 4×4 and intricate rhythms were on my keywords list.

08. How does it compare to what we might hear you play in a club?

This is the stuff, but it really depends on the night and the people: there are so many parameters that you need to take into account while playing but if I were to see a DJ play this kind of music I would be delighted!

09. What’s next on your agenda?

More music, releasing more music on my label, focusing on my friends, and trying to be the best person I can be for my family and everyone around me.

Web3 Weekly Wrap: Audius Integrates Solana NFTs, MODA DAO, Rashid Ajami, and More

This week’s Web3 Wrap includes Audius’ integration of Solana NFTs to its music ecosystem, pop star Doja Cat’s genesis collection with OneOf, music technology network and community MODA DAO, and much more. There are also a wealth of accounts and artists to check out in the What to Join and Who to Follow section and an artist spotlight on Rashid Ajami.

Read all about it below.

Audius Announces Solana NFT Integration

Decentralized music streaming platform Audius has announced that it will be integrating Solana’s Phantom wallet, allowing users to feature NFTs directly on their artist profile page. This new feature was rolled out to members of the silver tier or higher (meaning they are holding 100 or more $AUDIO tokens in their main Audius wallet). Audius has seen an explosion in popularity recently, with a user base hovering around six million at the time of writing—up from three million in March. What’s even more impressive is that the Audius team has done all this while completely hiding the underlying blockchain technology; according to them, 95% of the users don’t even know they are using the blockchain.

MODA DAO Introduces its Team and Outlines the Roadmap for Music3

Although it introduced itself a few months ago, we wanted to include MODA DAO in this week’s wrap because of its significance to the music industry as a whole—and because it has started introducing and interviewing its team.

In simple terms, MODA DAO is a decentralized technology network and community that aims to guide the “adoption of Web3 in the music industry via NFTs, micro-licensing, DAO governance and DeFi.” Over the next few months and years, MODA will roll out infrastructure for what the team is referring to as Music3, as well as creator tools, a publishing ecosystem, and an innovation lab, which should help to not only lower the barrier to entry for those wishing to enter the space but also by providing funds, technology, and knowhow to do so, whilst ensuring rights are protected and that the technology is future-proof.

You can read more about MODA’s mission on its Medium page, where you can also find interviews with Project Lead Sean Gardner and Media Rights and Data Science specialist Dr. Jay Mogis.

Kings of Leon to Make History With First Musical Recording to be Played in Space

American rock group Kings of Leon is making history by being the first band to have a musical NFT played in space. A live recording of the track “Time in Disguise” from their latest album, When you see yourself, is set to be loaded onto an iPhone and sent into space with a crew of civilian SpaceX astronauts where it will be played for the crew as they begin their three-day mission in orbit on September 15. The NFT will also be a part of an auction to benefit St. Jude’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, and will be packaged with a meet-and-greet of both the band and the space crew. Kings of Leon sees a bright future for blockchain and musical NFTs, stating, “we believe doing things like participating in this massive moment, not only generates money but generates awareness for the charity and the role NFTs can play in the future of raising money and restructuring the music industry.”

Babymetal Announces NFT Trading Card Series

Iconic J-rock band Babymetal is celebrating its 10-year anniversary by minting and releasing a collectible trading-card series. They are releasing the cards as a follow-up to the compilation album 10 Babymetal Budokan, which was released last December. The new series, which is largely made up of pictures of the band members, features 20 collectible card types split across three rarities; 24,200 “commons,” 2,750 “rares,” and 500 “super rares.” The cards are available now on the WAX blockchain and will be on sale until October 10.

Doja Cat Enters the NFT World With Debut Drop

R&B superstar Dojacat is unveiling her debut NFT collection, Planet Doja, on clean energy NFT platform OneOf. The NFT drop will include 26,000 limited-edition tokens at two tier levels that unlock certain perks depending on the rarity. The two tier levels, gold and platinum, will affect how the NFT can be used in the future. Gold NFTs will have the chance to win concert tickets to an upcoming Doja Cat concert, while platinum NFTs have a chance of winning “golden tickets,”  which will be redeemable for merch, premium seats, and other VIP perks. OneOf, which initially raised $63 million and is officially endorsed by legendary record producer Quincy Jones, is built on top of the Tezos blockchain, and uses two million times less energy than proof-of-work alternatives. “I don’t know that much about NFTs,” said Doja Cat in a statement about blockchain and crypto, “But what I do know is that they can be bad for the environment and cost a fortune. Mine won’t.”

Psy.P and KnowKnow of Higher Brothers are Releasing an NFT Music Video

Chinese hip-hop stars Psy.P and KnowKnow of the popular group Higher Brothers are making their NFT debut by releasing a tokenized music video. The rappers have teamed up with visual artist Aslan Malik to create a piece reminiscent of sunny south Thailand. Five versions of the video (titled “Phuket” after the Thai city) will initially be released on Binance Smart Chain with 3,000 copies minted for sale. Portions of the sale will be donated to Crypto against COVID, a charity whose mission is to help hospitals and other institutions around the world combat the spread of COVID. Psy.P and friends originally conceptualized the video as a result of not being able to visit the tropical paradise due to the pandemic. Psy.P is rather optimistic about cryptocurrency in general, stating “I’m a blockchain enthusiast, this is my first experiment on NFT with my friends, and I hope NFT will be a part of the future in [the] music industry and could bring more opportunities to independent music talents”.

Web3 Weekly Wrap: OneOf Launches, Fake Banksy, Classical Music, and More

This week’s Web3 Wrap features a wide-reaching set of news and announcements, including a hack and sale on Banksy’s official website, the launch of the Quincy Jones-backed OneOf NFT marketplace, the first classical music NFTs, and two comic-based drops that will surely have graphic novel pundits salivating.

Read all about what’s happening in the Web3 universe below.

Fake Banksy Sold Through Artists Own Website

A hacker was able to break into the artist’s website and post an inauthentic Banksy NFT for sale, netting a cool $336,000 in the process. An auction was posted to the now-deleted link banksy.co.uk, leading to a bidding war for an NFT that was in no way associated with the artist. The buyer, choosing to remain anonymous, said he only decided to purchase the NFT because it was linked through the official Banksy website. In a bizarre twist, the hacker decided to return the collector’s stolen funds, although the $5,000 used in Ethereum gas fees remain unaccounted for. The buyer was lucky the hacker had a change of heart, but many other victims aren’t as lucky; the irreversibility of sites like OpenSea means that once a bid is placed and accepted, the transaction can’t be backtracked.

Podcast 712: Space Ghost

As Space Ghost, Sudi Wachspress purveys a soulful breed of deep house that’s sure to make you move, and next month he’ll return with Dance Planet, his third album on the mighty Tartelet Records. Much like its predecessors, Endless Light and Aquarium Nightclub, it’s emotionally charged and groovy, but with its old-school house vocals and lush musical textures, it is “pointedly created to heal and energize” as the world recovers from a pandemic. Wachspress began writing it at the start of lockdown after he lost his job, but it really picked up steam at the start the year, as he began delving deeply into the ’90s stylings of Soichi Terada and Toyin Agbetu.

A resident of Oakland, California, Wachspress grew up in a small town a few hours from the East Bay area, but his relationship with house music really kickstarted through his teenage years while he studied at the California College of the Arts. As he became more deeply engrained in Oakland’s rich experimental music community, he launched Late Feelings, a series of all-vinyl dance parties, and began channeling a profound love for ’80s funk minimalism and ambient lo-fi beats into releases for Sweat Lodge Guru and Astro Nautico. He signed to Tartelet in 2018, delivering 12 cuts which, with their sweeping sci-fi synths and twinkling sound design, recalled Lone’s cosmic psychedelia, but the record still felt uniquely meditative and enchanting. Aquarium Nightclub, a boogie album inspired by African and Brazilian music from the ’80s, came a year later, and then last year Wachspress delivered six golden-era house anthems, paving the way for another full-length.

Recorded in late August in his home studio, Wachspress’ XLR8R podcast starts off with lush ambient textures, but it soon picks up the pace with a string of deep house jams. In celebration of the album, you’ll hear a couple of unreleased cuts from it, but the mix almost exclusively comprises tracks that Wachspress has unearthed during lockdown and he’s dying to play out—Alton Miller’s “Love Ballads” is a standout moment, as is R.E.’s “Rain Forest.” Each one of these tracks would sound even better on the dancefloor, but this mix is so well curated that it hooks you in all the way, and importantly it introduced us to releases that we haven’t heard before. Expect one hour of groovy, seductive house music that’ll have you craving even more.

01. What have you been up to recently?

I’ve been relaxing and hanging with friends. Overall things have been mellow as I wait for a few different projects to be released.

02. What have you been listening to during the pandemic?

I’ve been enjoying a lot of ambient and house music during the pandemic. Music From Memory’s Virtual Dreams was a big one for me but also things like Soichi Terada and Toyin Agebetu. Recently I’ve really been vibin on LTJ Bukem and a lot of things affiliated with his labels. Another good one was Hotspring Obit For Sunshade.

03. You have a new album on the way for Tartelet Records. What can you tell us about it?

My upcoming album, Dance Planet, has a good mix of house, ambient, and downtempo breaks. It’s definitely inspired by ’90s styles like Soichi and Toyin; I love their mix of uptempo and downtempo tracks. I was laid off at the start of the pandemic from my café job so I finally had time to get in my flow and make a lot of music. I was starting to play with some of the ideas for the album in 2020 but really finished it up at the start of 2021.

04. Where and when did you record this mix?

This mix was recorded in my studio a few weeks ago.

05. What can the listener expect with it?

Expect a nice mellow start with a gradual push into some deep house cuts, with some surprises at the end.

06. How did you go about choosing the tracks that you’ve included?

I’ve got a lot of house tracks stacking up that I’ve been wanting to put in mixes or play out at shows, so I grabbed some of my current favorites.

07. What setup did you use to record it?

Two turntables and Serato.

08. How does it compare to what we’d hear you play in a club?

I play all kinds of music at home and at shows. I would probably slip some of these tracks into a club set, because they get me hype!

09. What is next on your horizon?

I’ve got some other music releases in the works but for now I’m excited for Dance Planet to drop in early October. Keep your eyes peeled. Thanks for listening!

Web3 Weekly Wrap: The Hundreds Sell Out, FWB and Zora Hackathon, M Ξ T A P L Ξ X with c / a, and More

We’re back with the latest Web3 Weekly Wrap.

With every week, the Web3 space, especially the NFT sector, grows insane amounts, with new projects, all-time highs, and mind-blowing developments happening almost every day. This week was no different and featured a wealth of inspiring drops and announcements, including a hackathon by FWB and Zora, a new platform to tokenize royalties, and much more.

Check it all out below.

c / a Get Their Dues and Sell Out Legacy Collections

Until recently, London duo c / a were relatively unknown NFT pioneers. Largely due to the championing of gabagool.eth and his on-chain sleuthing, over the last few weeks the duo has been getting deserved attention, selling out two 2018/2019 NFT collections, realti—a piece of which featured as an XLR8R+ artwork last year—and aifx, the latter of which are keys to open access to parts of the duo’s M Ξ T A P L Ξ X, an early Metaverse-styled mall and environment that offered tokenized access to decentralized applications, music, games, artworks, simulations, and experiences, all created and curated by the duo. The artworks within the realti collection, interestingly, were some of the first experiments with GAN (Generative Adversarial Network) trained generative art, made by the program, which the duo trained on music by Aphex Twin and Grimes.

In the last two weeks, c / a also sold five of the seven HORSES on XNFT, which is a fascinating collection of generative ambient and horse hallucinations that are undoubtedly collector’s items in regards to the history of NFTs.

FWB (Friends With Benefits) and Zora Announce a Hackathon

Technology and culture community FWB (Friends With Benefits) and open protocol Zora have announced a hackathon, a six-hour incubator of sorts for its community to “unleash our creative liberties and build cool shit, alongside people we love.” Kicking off at 2 p.m. EST on August 29, teams will have six hours to design and build “an FWB member benefit that any token hodler of our beloved $FWB can access.” Three winning teams will be selected and awarded funding to build their proposed project alongside the FWB Product team.

You can find more information about the hackathon here.

Rapper Tyga Announces OnlyFans Rival MyyStar, Allowing Content Creators to Sell NFTs via Ethereum

Rapper Tyga announced that he’s ditching OnlyFans in favor of launching his own creator-support platform, MyyStar. The site will be offering a better deal for content creators (taking a 10% cut as opposed to OnlyFans taking 20%), and creators will be able to sell Ethereum-based NFTs directly from the site. MyyStar follows Tyga’s other business Too Raww, which was an agency designed to get people up and running with OnlyFans. The platform is open for applications now.

Afghans are Buying Crypto to Safeguard Their Money as They Flee the Country

In the midst of a nationwide cash shortage, rising prices, and a destabilizing local currency, fleeing Afghans are turning to cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, Litecoin, and Ethereum as a way to safeguard their funds. One local was reported as saying he could make more money day trading crypto than he could doing construction, although a lot of Afghans were less interested in talking about their dealings in the digital world when questioned about it directly according to CNBC. Looking at statistics provided by Chainalysis, Afghanistan was ranked 20 out of the 154 countries listed for crypto adoption over the last year, but when looking at purely peer-to-peer crypto facilitation, that ranking jumps up to number 7 on the list. It’s not all smooth sailing for crypto in the land-locked country though; many folks lack access to any banking facilities, and furthermore, the internet is not nearly stable enough to be reliably usable by merchants to accept crypto on a larger scale. Even still, it’s promising to see that even in the face of uncertainty, cryptocurrencies can offer a bit of stability (as volatile as the price may be).

Quipuswap Governance Token Air-Dropped to all “Early Access” Users

Tezos-based DEX Quipuswap has airdropped tokens to early users. If you’ve used the platform at all before August 25, you should have at least 5 Quipu governance tokens sitting in your Tezos wallet. 300,000 tokens were distributed so far, with a total supply of 422,535 tokens minted. If you’ve used the platform but don’t see any tokens in your wallet, make sure you’re using a wallet that supports FA2 tokens like Temple or Kukai and add the token address manually (Token Address: KT193D4vozYnhGJQVtw7CoxxqphqUEEwK6Vb).

Single EtherRock Sells for Over $1.3 Million

The NFT space gets wilder by the second as a single picture of a rock with a superimposed Ethereum logo on top sold for a staggering $1.3 million (400 ETH at the time of purchase). As stated on the site, the rocks have no intrinsic purpose except to be a digital image of a rock, however, the project has been around since 2017, putting it in the same era as the ubiquitous CryptoPunks and lesser-known curio cards. Another part of the allure comes from scarcity; there are only 100 of the rocks available, meaning only a few owners can own one of the earliest NFT projects to exist.

Chicago Blackhawks Launch NFT Collection Inspired by Old-school Games

NHL team the Chicago Blackhawks today announced the release of 12 collectible 8-bit character cards and 2,000 digital tickets were minted and are available on sweet.io. Select NFTs will even be paired with real-world objects to please fans both digitally and otherwise. The character cards (60 total available) each have a unique name, description, and set of attributes inspired by Blackhawk history, the United center, and hockey in general.

The Hundreds Sell Out 25,000 NFTs in Seven Minutes

Streetwear brand The Hundreds officially entered the NFT space this morning with Adam Bomb Squad, an NFT drop consisting of 25,000 “unique combinations of bombs and accompanying backgrounds related to our history over the last two decades,” with all bombs “designed by The Hundreds at some point in the last 18 years, and most were featured on T-shirts, apparel, and billboards.” The drop sold out within 40 minutes, showing how a strong and dedicated community—whether crypto native or not—can move mountains in this space.

Check out more from the project here.

Dr. Who: Worlds Apart Official NFT Card Game Launching on Binance Smart Chain

A fully licensed, fully playable Dr. Who trading card game is on its way to the blockchain. Fans will be able to own digital trading cards featuring gorgeous artworks of characters from the series represented with various levels of scarcity. The game is free to play and the core cards will be minted in perpetuity so long as the game continues, however, limited edition cards will also be introduced which will cost real-world money to acquire. The game is still in development, although early adopters can begin setting up their decks and strategies now. Dr. Who – Worlds apart is set to launch in Q3 of this year.

ON1 Force Collection Sells Out in Minutes

ON1 Force, a collection of 7,777 generative side profile characters, sells out in minutes. These colorful collectibles feature anime-esque characters ornamented with everything from the likes of apocalyptic masks to horns and headphones. More information and roadmap updates can be found on their Twitter, @0n1Force.

3lau Raises $16 Million to Tokenize Royalties for Artists and Fans

Crypto-forward electronic musician 3lau raised $16 million for a project called ‘Royal’ that aims to bring music royalties to the blockchain. The platform will allow rights owners to mint and trade ownership of artist intellectual property, an idea 3lau and friends had earlier on in their lives before the emergence of cryptocurrencies. “Imagine an NFT that represents 100% ownership of a song or album’s master recording rights. The artist can then issue a DAO token that fractionalizes ownership of a song or album while maintaining 51% ownership of the total supply,” wrote the entrepreneur earlier this year in a brief statement of his intentions for the platform.

What to Join and Who to Follow:

The Hundreds Discord – with more drops on the way, it would be smart to join this community.

@Spaghetti_dev – the creator of Lunar Token, tokenized real estate on the moon

@gabagool.eth – self-professed blockchain sleuth

@cslasha – Artist duo, creators of M Ξ T A P L Ξ X.

@etienecrauss – NFT artist, crypto influencer

XNFT Artist Spotlight: c / a

As stated above, c / a is an anonymous performing arts duo based in London with a keen interest in software programming, film, video games, and, of course, all iterations of the web. In 2018/2019 the duo created and launched a virtual universe dubbed M Ξ T A P L Ξ X, which offers participants a chance to experience their art, with experiences gated by tokens.

The duo’s first collection on XNFT, HORSES, has almost sold out, with only two of seven remaining on the Polygon (Matic) chain. Fusing generative ambient textures and phrases with wild horses running on a field in RGB lights, the collection, as stated by the duo, was “generated by a neural network, performed at a back garden,” and “created as an intro for the Covid era virtual performances.”

Don’t sleep on this duo. Check out HORSES here.

Podcast 711: Perila

Ever since Aleksandra Zakharenko arrived in Berlin six years ago, she’s cultivated a small community of experimental artists defined by their transportive ambient compositions. She began sharing her favorites through the now-defunct Berlin Community Radio (BCR) and making her own alongside her flatmates Special Guest DJ and exael, whom we’ve featured before. It was through her own podcast series, WET (or Weird Erotic Tension), that she first demonstrated her penchant for erotic spoken word poetry, and with a release of warm atmospheric emotion on Manchester’s Sferic Records in 2019 she became Perila, a guise once reserved for her BCR show. She recorded her debut album, How Much Time it is Between You and Me?, in rural France during the pandemic, reflecting on the concept of time. It landed on Smalltown Supersound in June.

Growing up in St. Petersburg, Zakharenko involved herself in music at a young age, drumming and singing in local bands and also co-founding of radio.syg.ma, one of the country’s first experimental music stations which hosted one of her early productions on 2019’s SYGMATURE compilation. Besides field recordings and glassy synths, her sound remains rooted in hushed vocals, which roots back to her fascination with voice and language. (She studied English literature at university.) You can hear this across the enchanting Everything Is Already There cassette on Boomkat Editions and the Meta Door L cassette on Paralaxe Editions, which incidentally is where XLR8R first discovered her work.

We’ve been pursuing Perila for an XLR8R podcast for over a year, and we’re now delighted to present an immaculately crafted, immersive listen rich in lush tones and textures. Recorded after an inspired trip to Lisbon, Portugal, the mix is a collection of Zakharenko’s favorite absorbing and quietly seductive tracks that’ll transport you to a different place and make you feel something deep inside. It’s celebrates her debut album by exhibiting the serenity and and warm comfort that has come to define Perila as an artist.

01. How has 2021 been for you so far?

It’s been very mood-swingy. A lot of interesting projects, finally traveling a bit, self-discoveries, and constant inner work. More and more I’m realizing that I need more nature in my life because it’s everything for me.

02. How have you found the lockdown caused by the pandemic?

To be honest, it was one of the most exciting and deep times in my life. It’s been challenging and transforming at the same time. I think a lot of us felt something we’ve never felt before and it changed a lot for me inside. It’s been a very special time for me. I feel grateful.

03. Which artists and labels have caught your ear?

I haven’t been listening to much music lately. I’ve been really into silence and sounds floating around us as they are. I’m happy to hear that downtempo is coming back to the zone.

04. What is it that inspires you to make music?

Nature, observation, and change.

05. When and where did you record this mix?

I recorded it after my trip to Lisbon where I met my love ocean again. To be honest, I think it’s my last mix for some time. I really want to explore new fields and untouched territories. There are a lot of good mixes and artists out there and I want to try something I’ve never done before. It’s all about new open roads which are the future we build and shape with these hands here typing these words. It was a grey rainy morning during a Berlin summer pretending to be autumn in my cosy blue room.

06. How did you go about choosing the tracks that you included?

First I wanted to make an illbient mix but then emotions took over as always and I just put together another trip reflecting my current mood state because I can’t fake it; I need to be honest with self. I guess it’s autumn here and this is how I feel about it now. I could say it’s still pretty illbient but the interpretation is open.

07. Where do you imagine it being listened to?

On the floor at night or in the forest absorbing beats coming from the trees.

08. What are your long-term ambitions with music?

It’s my life.

09. What’s next on your horizon?

I want to disappear from the outside world for some time and get lost in the studio and forests making new sounds and finding new ways to express what is inside. I also want to play live sets for nature.

Ross From Friends Next on Brainfeeder with Deeply Emotive Second Album

Ross From Friends, the alias Felix Clary Weatherall, will release Tread, a new album on Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder.

On Tread, Weatherall dials up the intricate and emotive qualities of his production style. It follows the British producer’s debut album, Family Portrait, and subsequent Epiphany single on Brainfeeder.

Weatherall wrote the entire release while confined over lockdown to a small stretch of the Old Kent Road in London—an area between his studio and his house. This was the same neighbourhood in which his Nan had worked in a sweet shop many years before, and where his Dad had attended various parties and squats. As Weatherall wrote the record, he spent a lot of time reflecting on his own life around this area: the parties he’d go to, different friends, relationships, houses he’s lived in and made tunes in.

“How things have changed over the past 10 years in south London can be mapped with the type of music I was listening to throughout various stages of living here,” he explains. “I’ve basically honoured all of these musical touchstones across the album, thinking about how those memories and the tunes attached have been etched into a permanent chronology that’s completely personal to me.”

Fundamental in recording Tread was a new plugin named Thresho, which starts recording once the audio hits a user-defined threshold, then stops once it goes below that threshold, automatically saving and indexing the resulting clips alongside timestamps. Weatherall designed it because he was frustrated by the friction to the creative process that arises when recording hardware and instruments through a computer—the constant need to catalog everything as you go. It’s available now via Ableton’s Max For Live platform.

Alongside the announcement, Weatherall has shared opener “The Daisy,” a bewitching club track that draws its name from one of the opening steps in solving the classic Rubik’s Cube puzzle. The single comes alongside a video which peers into the world of competitive speed-cubing.
