Heinrich Mueller & The Exaltics Next Up on Solar One Music

The next edition in Solar One Music‘s Hubble Telescope Series is being handled by Heinrich Mueller and The Exaltics.

Following on from a contribution to the series earlier this year by Gerard Hanson as E.R.P., German imprint Solar One Music has announced that Heinrich Mueller (a.k.a. Gerald Donald of Drexciya) and The Exaltics will handle the third and final chapter in their tributary series to the Hubble Telescope. Together, the two electro acts will present a new endeavor entitled Project STS-31—a name that references the launch of the telescope itself.

The EP features contributions by both artists under various different guises. According to the label, we should expect “nothing but contemplative and cosmic electro beats using original outer-space sounds from the Universe.” As part of the bonus CD package, there will be five additional cuts provided.

Spiralgalaxie will be released on September 5, and can be pre-ordered now at Solar One Music’s Bandcamp (where 100 limited edition box sets featuring T-shirts, posters and more can also be pre-ordered). Stream snippets of all the tracks below.

Seattle’s Decibel Festival Will Not Take Place This Year

The Seattle Weekly officially announced this morning that Sean Horton, founder and operator of the international experimental music festival Decibel, has put the event on indefinite hold for 2016. Decibel has long been recognized as one of the top destination festivals in the US, with exemplary artist showcases and in-depth workshops taking place at numerous venues all over the city of Seattle during a five-day period. Within the last 12 months, Horton transplanted himself from his long time home in Seattle and took up residence within the urban sprawl of Los Angeles. Horton was quoted on these subjects as saying:

“Considering the new career path and distance from Seattle, it is with a heavy heart that I am announcing that after 11 straight annual editions, Decibel will be taking an extended break.”

Not long after The Seattle Weekly reported on the hiatus, Sean Horton posted the following message on his personal Facebook account encouraging followers to support another event called Chance of Rain festival taking place around the same time that Decibel would have been held:

“To all Decibel supporters,

I founded the Decibel Festival in 2003 with the hope of creating a unified experience celebrating electronic music performance, visual art, education, and technology the that brings them all together. Looking back over the past 12 years, it is abundantly clear that Decibel surpassed any and all goals while tapping into the zeitgeist of the Pacific Northwest. The festival hosted over 1,000 artists representing 40 countries, making it one of the most internationally focused and diverse festivals of its kind in North America. Last year’s program was one of our most successful to date, which is a testament to this vision and the state of electronic music in North America.

At the heart of Decibel has always been the Seattle electronic music community, which to this day remains the most vibrant and resilient I’ve ever had the pleasure of being a part of. No place did this resiliency shine through more than with the Decibel Staff, who consistently met each challenge with poise and professionalism. You needn’t look any further than the plethora of regional and local PNW crews, weeklies, festivals and organizations Decibel has collaborated with over the years to see just how strong that community is (e.g. Uniting Souls, TUF, Substrata, Studio 4/4, Starborne Shows, Starborne Sound, Shameless, Action Potential, High & Tight, FWD, Flammable, Innerflight, secondnature, Cascadia NW Arts & Music Festival, CreativeLive, Bottom Forty, Believe You Me, Laptop Battle, Fourthcity, MOTOR, Capitol Hill Block Party, Bassdrop, Sub Pop, KEXP, EMP Museum, Bumbershoot, Seattle Theatre Group, Orac Records, Broken Disco, Bubbling’, The Henry Art Gallery, The Stranger, Time-Based Art Festival, TRUST, Grounded, The Seattle Art Museum, Substantial, New Forms Festival, SunTzu Sound, Dropping Gems, The Vera Project, The PNW Chapter of the Recording Academy, Rane, Stimulant, The End, The Seattle International Film Festival, PlayNetwork, What The Festival, Paradise, KBCS, C89.5, USC, Abstract Earth Project and many others).

Thank you once again for all of the support over the years. Change never comes easy, but know that Decibel as an organization will arise once again with new leadership to help guide it. For now, I hope we can all reflect on how Decibel touched each of our lives and helped to provide a platform for the flourishing Pacific Northwest electronic music community.”

Omar-S Gives Away EP

Alex O. Smith (a.k.a. Omar-S) has made two new tracks available to download for free via Resident Advisor today.

According to the online magazine, the Detroit native sent both cuts to their inbox this past weekend—one entitled “Party Marty,” the other “Muggy Detroit Heat.” They also stated that Smith had advised that “both tracks were made using Roland Boutique synths in his backyard. One is mixed by fellow Detroiter Norm Talley, and the other by Smith himself.”

Mathew Jonson Next Up in Ask the Experts; Send Him Your Questions Now

At the beginning of June we announced the re-launch of our Ask the Experts series, as we invited you to get the answers to everything you could possibly have wanted to know from Gerd Janson, direct from the horse’s mouth.

With those responses on the way later this week, it’s time to reveal the next artist in the series: the Canadian master of machines, Mathew Jonson. Over the course of well over a decade perfecting his spacey techno sounds, he’s released a wealth of interesting solo material, as well as collaborative efforts as Cobblestone Jazz or Midnight Operator. A true expert in the sound, he’s bound to serve up some real interesting insights.

Don’t be afraid to think outside the studio when drumming up your questions—the purpose of Ask the Experts is to open things up for a broad range of probing, whether that be his general career, influences, or anything else you’ve been pondering. All questions should be sent to [email protected]; we’ll pass them along to Mathew who will select his favorites, and at the end of the month, we’ll publish his answers.

All questions must be delivered by 5pm PST on Friday July 15.

Blawan’s Bored Young Adults Hits Trilogy Tapes

Jamie Roberts has launched a new solo project, entitled Bored Young Adults.

Having funnelled most of his attention into collaborative endeavors over the past few years with Pariah (as Karenn) and Surgeon (as Trade), Roberts is back on his own with the Bored Young Adults project. His first release under the moniker will be a three-tracker via Will Bankhead‘s Trilogy Tapes. The pair have worked together before—Roberts released one of his most memorable tracks, “Why They Hide Their Bodies Under My Garage,” via Bankhead’s Hinge Finger back in 2012. His new material looks set to explore a different end of the techno spectrum, delving into relatively reduced tempos and unusual acid lines. For a taste of what to expect, stream the title track below.

Shy Dancers On Bungalowdorf Beach is due out on July 29.

Stream Marlon Hoffstadt’s Trippy Synth Track “Coach Mike”

Berlin-based Marlon Hoffstadt‘s Retrograde imprint—formed alongside Natureboy Gold and Matteo Luis in August 2015—will release his latest EP, Coach Mike, on July 29.

The four-track EP will be the sophomore release from Hoffstadt on Retrograde, which provides a platform for artists to explore music alongside other forms of art, such as surrealism. Hoffstadt’s sound is an innovative blend of synth-led grooves and rolling percussion, with this particular EP being inspired by a particular soft synth, as Hoffstadt explains:

“The TAL Baseline 101 was my biggest inspiration. At that time, I was totally amazed by productions that are based on rhythms only, and after I discovered this synthesizer, I tried to produce something that functions because of the groove and works completely without any vocals. This little VST with its nice sound library and super easy to use sequencer was the best tool I could use for tracks like this. Since then, I’m always looking for new synthesizers, sequencers, or drum machines that give me the opportunity to discover different and new ways of producing music, no matter if digital or analog.”

Coach Mike will be released via Retrograde on July 29, with its title track streaming in full via the player above.

Tutorial: Sound Design with Reaktor’s Metaphysical Function

Reaktor is at the core of all of Native Instrument’s software synthesis. It forms the building blocks and provides the backbone of innumerable effects, devices, and ensembles—which means that many of its esoteric options are often overlooked.

In the above video, PB instructor and drum’n’bass producer Dave Stone demonstrates some expert tricks with Metaphysical Function, one of Reaktor’s lesser-known ensembles, and delves into the sound design techniques he teaches at Point Blank.

Raffaello & Palermo Land on Let’s Play House; Stream a Cut Now

Raffaello & Palermo is the collaboration of two friends and former Let’s Play House contributors Damon Palermo (a.k.a. Magic Touch) and Raphaël Valensi (a.k.a. Laura Ingalls), who dropped their debut EP together, titled The Spirit, on LPH on July 1.

The EP presents four chunky house cuts in the same vein we’ve come to expect from the NYC staples, think rave-tinged house stompers, disco outings, and trance-like psychedelia. It’s a record of summer anthems that will surely set dancefloors alight across not only New York but the rest of the US and Europe alike.

The record can be purchased now over at Juno, with lead cut, “The Spirit” streaming in full via the player above.
