The Avalanches Drop New Album; Hear it in Full Now

Following an unprecedented amount of hype and anticipation, Australian act The Avalanches have decided to release a stream of their forthcoming album, Wildflower, a week in advance of its official release date.

The group’s first album in 16 years, the 22-track album features collaborations with Father John Misty, Danny Brown, Toro Y Moi, and MF Doom. Having already gotten a taste of their funky, laid-back LP cut “Subways” as well as the nightmarish tune “Frankie Sinatra,” which was met with feelings of widespread distaste, the real question becomes this. Will this album live up to the monumental amount of fuss it has created for itself? Listen below and figure it out for yourself.

You can stream Wildflower below via Apple Music (only in the US).

Pre-order the album from The Avalanches’ online store.

Vakula Cyclicality Between Procyon and Gomeisa

For someone who’s only been putting out records since 2008, Mikhaylo Vityuk has an astonishingly broad range of releases to his name. The Ukrainian artist from the northern city of Konotop, named Vakula, has built a reputation like few others in the region.

He’s unloosed 12” singles, EPs, albums and compilations through respected underground imprints Firecracker, Archipel and Uzuri — bold, experimental house, techno and electronic tracks more concerned with artistic expression than being the latest club fodder. This is his fourth album in an idiosyncratic catalog, landing on the increasingly essential Dutch Dekmantel label, and follows Dedicated to Jim Morrison, for his own Leleka stable, a tribute to The Doors singer and self-styled mystic.

As you might expect, Cyclicality Between Procyon and Gomeisa is experimental too (especially with a title like that). Borne out of improvisation sessions, as its moniker suggests, in places it’s composed of lots of little loops that interlace and fold into each other, while in others his musicianship and command of more dancefloor friendly forms come to the fore.

The first half is mostly ambient. The title cut is reminiscent of Global Communication or Reload, a cosmic head-trip of gently undulating tones and melodies that hints at a love of early ’90s Artificial Intelligence releases. “Acteon” is a Balearic piece, a little like Tangerine Dream’s “Love on a Real Train,” while “Flying Over the Sirius” and “Dim White Dwarf” are self-indulgent exercises that aren’t especially enjoyable. That’s the danger when you allow your improv tendencies to run free, we suppose. “Double Star System,” with its gorgeous guitar twangs, subtle bass and synth oscillations is beautiful, though.

It’s in its second half that the album really hits its stride. “Deep Motivation” heads to the very farthest reaches of dub techno, “8600 km Radius” has a funked up electronic bassline, 4/4 beat and subtle touches of jazz piano, cosmic riffs twinkling in the backdrop, “Intergalactic Funk” is a live band disco cut that does just what you’d hope it would, “Gomeisa Blues” is more like psychedelic folk artist John Martyn on an Echoplex mission, and “Tommasi Planet” is sublime. Most of Cyclicality Between Procyon and Gomeisa is unquestionably great, and the kind of music you can return to again and again. If you’re happy to skip a few tracks, there’s gold to be found in these hills.

Cyclicality Between Procyon and Gomeisa is scheduled for release on July 4. Pre-order from the Dekmantel store and check out snippets below.

Jamie xx Shares Mind-Blowing New Video

Jamie Smith (a.k.a. Jamie xx) has shared a new video for his track “Gosh.”

“Gosh” is lifted from Smith’s 2015 album, In Colour. Last year, Erik Vernquist, a digital artist from Stockholm, Sweden, put together a video for the track. Now, a year on, Romain Gavras has directed a new accompaniment to the track. Gavras is probably best known for directing the controversial video to M.I.A.’s “Born Free,” as well as the more recent “Bad Girls.”

The new video for “Gosh” is available to stream now via iTunes. Check out the original below.

Johannes Motschmann ‘Echoes and Drones’

Berlin-based composer Johannes Motschmann (who studied composition, piano and electronic music; and has already written works for large orchestra) has now combined those two longstanding German traditions, electronic and classical music, on his album Electric Fields.

Drawing influences from Tangerine Dream and Brian Eno, Motschmann (accompanied by multi-percussionist David Panzl and Boris Bolles) took written scores into a studio and recorded live sessions that overflow with energy and emotion.

Ahead of the album’s August 19 release on the highly revered German label Neue Meister, “Echoes and Drones” has been made available as one of today’s free downloads below.

Jacktone Newcomer Isabella Delivers a Batch of Hardware-Driven Cuts

Isabella—a Boston-based composer and art student—has released a nine-track LP of gritty, hardware-based tracks through Jacktone Records, entitled Viscous Positions.

As the 15th release on the label’s rapidly expanding discography, her full-length further solidifies the young label’s reputation for maintaining a consistent output of unorthodox, forward-thinking electronic sounds. On Isabella’s label debut, off-kilter compositions move purposefully between a variety of experimental areas. In between the foreboding techno of “Cloying Traces”and the crunchy, 303-driven acid of “Pressing”, the full length pauses intermittently for detours through more atmospheric territory.

Purchase the album or stream it in full via Bandcamp here.

Jon Phonics ‘Seeta’

Under his Jon Phonics alias, Jonathan Phoenix has seen a meteoric rise in acclaim since the late 2000s that has positioned him as one of the UK’s most capable hip-hop producers. Since the 2014 release of his White Neckle EP, a heavyweight four-tracker that spoke to an impressive instrumental versatility, the London-born, Glasgow-based artist has also been diligently at work as a DJ. With a well-received Boiler Room set in 2015 on top of numerous club nights for his Astral Black imprint in the rear view, Jon’s accomplishments on the decks have bolstered his studio work significantly.

Today’s download comes from Letters To Home, his most recent full-length. Entitled “Seeta” (perhaps a reference to the track’s Bollywood samples), Phoenix here offers up a succinct, club-ready dose of instrumental grime.

Premiere: Stream a Dubby House Trip from Leonel Castillio

On July 5, Unlock Recordings will launch the first in its vinyl-only ‘Collaborations’ series, featuring tracks from Leonel Castillio, Jorge Savoretti & Paco Wegmann, Fosky, and Franco Cinelli.

Collaborations 1 will be the first in a trio for Unlock Recordings which was founded in 2004 by Solimano as a way to promote Latin American producers. The four tracks on offer here operate in the deeper realm of house and techno, with razor-sharp percussion, tripped-out delays, and rhythmic synth lines thrown in for good measure.

Ahead of the July 5 release, Unlock Recordings has offered up a full stream of Leonel Castillio’s “Vibraphonistix,” which can be heard via the player above.

Bob Moses Mini-Documentary Charts the Duo’s Rise to Fame

The deeply contemplative sounds of Tom Howie and Jimmy Vallance, known as the duo Bob Moses, continue to gain a substantial following after the release of their debut album Days Gone By on Domino. They have successfully created an ardent and brooding sonic landscape that teeters between the organic and the electronic which lives on the dancefloor in a wholly unique fashion. The Vancouver-born, New York-based duo have just released a mini-documentary titled “Days Gone By – A Bob Moses Story.”

Both Howie and Vallance disclose information about their past relationship in Canada and how a set of bizarre circumstances brought them back together for a musical partnership. You can watch the full video in the player above.

Check out a new acoustic version of Bob Moses’ album cut “Before I Fall” in the player below.
