Jesper Ryom “Chants”

Raised in the scenic northern periphery of Denmark, Jesper Ryom gravitated to music at an early age as a tool of escapism and release. His recorded work—which incorporates an eclectic mix of guitars, house rhythms, and elements of hip-hop and dub—translates the idyllic surroundings of his upbringing into lengthy, thoughtful tracks that often transcend genre classifications. Ryom recently returned to La Fleur‘s Powerplant imprint, on which he released his 2011 Nature Boy debut, to contribute to their five-year compilation alongside Acid Mondays and Justin Massei.

Ryom has given XLR8R a download of that contribution, entitled “Chants.” As melancholic synth leads float spaciously around gentle guitars, soft-spoken kicks drive the track forward in concert with brief acid interludes.

Danny Brown Signs to Warp; Shares Music Video

Detroit rapper Danny Brown has made the switch from Fools Gold to the illustrious Independent UK label Warp Records.

Despite having not released any albums since 2013, Brown has been keeping himself busy with a number of singles and collaborations with artists such as Rustie, Clams Casino, and The Avalanches. In a press release, Brown states: “With the blessing of my Fools Gold family by my side, I’m excited to be working with Warp on new material. They’re music fans to the same high degree I am and I’m looking forward to breaking some rules together.”

The first single to come out of the new partnership is the intrepid and rawkus track “When It Rains.” Accompanied by a VHS-inspired music video, Brown’s sound and vision appear to be veering in a direction that has us totally electrified. We can’t wait to see more.

Rush Hour Announces New Compilation Series

Rush Hour, the Amsterdam-based record store, distributor, and label, has announced details surrounding the first two editions of its new compilation series. The new series is intended to feature an eclectic mix of genres and sounds, inspired and curated by Rush Hour’s friends.

Hunchin’ All Night, the inaugural volume of the series, will spotlight Rush Hour regular Hunee, who has selected a grouping of dancefloor-ready tracks that range from house and techno to 70s jams and African music. The series will follow with RHMC002, which aims to be continuation of the Kindred Spirits released ‘Surinam!’ collection. The volume will play host to a variety of rare and collectable Surinamese 45’s and LP cuts, and will be curated by African hip-hop specialist Thomas Gesthuizen and Rush Hour co-founder Antal Heitlage.

Spencer Parker Announces EP as Brotherhood

Spencer Parker will release an EP under his Brotherhood alias via his own Work Them Records, due out this July.

The Berlin-based DJ-producer first coined the Brotherhood alias in order to differentiate his Berghain performances from those upstairs in Panorama Bar. This year he will make his debut release under the moniker, set to be the first of a tripartite series. The three-tracker promises punchy percussion and tough techno, much like what you may expect from a Brotherhood set.

Part One Of Three is due out July 11.

Samuel Kerridge & Abdulla Rashim Remix Ancestral Voices

Ancestral Voices‘ debut 2015 album on Samurai Horo has been given the remix treatment, to be released on two discs this July.

Liam Blackburn released his debut album as Ancestral Voices last year: a work of experimental techno entitled Night Of Visions. Almost a year on, Samurai Horo has recruited a handful of producers to remix four cuts from the LP, across two separate EPs.

On the first EP Swedish producer and Northern Electronics label head Abdulla Rashim reshapes “Invocations,” while ASC & Sam KDC tackle “Feathered Serpent.” On the second part of the remix package Pact Infernal offers a dramatic rework of “Vine of the Soul.” The flip side is handled by Contort head honcho Samuel Kerridge, who requested to use elements from two of the album’s cuts, “Sleepless Night, First Light” and “Ritual Terre,” creating a new track—”Sleepless Ritual.”

Night of Visions Remixed Part 1 is due out July 1, and Night of Visions Remixed Part 2 will follow on July 29. Stream snippets from Part 1 below.

Premiere: Hear a Track from Easy To Remember’s Debut LP

Italy’s Unclear Records is back with a 10-track LP from label-heads Easy To Remember.

Titled Pescaiola, the LP will follow material from the likes of Baby Ford, Roman Fluegel, Gigi Masin, Gerry Read, and Juju & Jordash, adhering to the raw and underground ethos put forth from the label. Bookended with a lo-fi style, Pescaiola features everything from hip-hop-infused beats to emotive house, gritty funk and chunky, low-slung grooves. It’s an accomplished collection of tracks and, although the styles vary across the board, it’s coherently Easy To Remember throughout.

Kllo Share Second Cut from Forthcoming EP on Ghostly

Having just shared the track “Walls to Build” from their forthcoming sophomore EP, the Melbourne-based duo Kllo have continued to cause a stir with a fantastically pristine sound that is picking up some serious steam.

Citing their music as “electronic pop music with UK garage influences” or sounding “somewhere in between Jacques Greene and Little Dragon” in an interview with Kit and Ace, cousins Chloe Kaul and Simon Lam broke onto the scene in 2014 with their debut EP, Cusp, on Australian label Dot Dash Recordings. Garnering a great deal of attention and interest since this first release, Kaul and Lam have teamed up with the world-renowned music label Ghostly International and are scheduled to release their new Well Worn EP on August 5.

Efterklang Returns with New Opera Album

Having officially disbanded in 2014, Efterklang has reformed.

Prior to 2014, the groundbreaking Danish group had been releasing momentous and innovative music since they formed in 2013, establishing a reputation for evolving with character while incorporating a large number of musicians. Having followed a more orchestral sound with each passing release, the band has decided to write this latest album of theirs alongside award-winning composer Karsten Fundal.

The new album, titled Leaves – The Colour of Falling, is a contemporary Opera that incorporates ten musicians from Efterklang & The Happy Hopeless Orchestra, who play alongside five vocalists. The music channels a rhythmical language that resembles the work of Phillip Glass and Steve Reich while adding its very own array of tonal expression and artistic spirit.

Karsten Fundal explains his thoughts on Leaves: “We wanted to break down the conventions of the opera as a genre. The result is a song cycle about a cult located beneath the ground while the earth might be experiencing its downfall above ground. It’s about loss – loss of identity, loss of love and loss of life itself. We wanted to create an opera for the mood you’re put in when you on a beautiful autumn day see how a brown leaf falls from a tree in the garden – the beautiful swaying fall signifying that everything will perish.”

Exclusive: Acumen Hands Over a Cavernous Cut from his Sophomore LP

Hailing from France, DJ-producer, label-head, expert curator and all-around music lover Acumen (a.k.a Antoine Garcin) has released My Girls, an 11-track sophomore LP that dropped today via the artist’s Time Has Changed label. With well over twenty-five releases under his belt, Acumen’s Time Has Changed imprint has come to be known as a trusted source of intoxicating house music since 2007. In addition to this, Acumen has put music out on Get Physical and Mobilee with the likes of Richie Hawtin, Loco Dice and Laurent Garnier.

In an interview with Ibiza Voice, Garcin explains the thinking behind his album, saying: “An album for me is not only collecting 11 dance-floor tracks that could be several EP at the end. But rather exploring some new genres, new sounds. Taking some risks; that’s why I’ve tried many genres on it: downtempo, slow house, house, tech house, and techno.”

To help kick off the launch of this special collection of tracks from Acumen, the artist has graciously given XLR8R the chance to host the LP cut “Quota.” Cavernous and warm, the track uses sombre pads and shiny synths which give the tune dance a spooky, angelic, and relaxingly danceable vibe.
