Watch a Three-Part Tutorial for NI’s Massive

Native Instrument’s Massive is one of the most popular soft synths on the market today. With its complex modulation capabilities, the synth became famous for warbling bass and lead lines. If you dig deeper, however, Massive shows itself to be a hugely versatile synth.

In Point Blank‘s latest tutorial series, sound design instructor Chris Carter explores what Massive is capable of, including filtering, modulation, wavetable modulation, combining multiple oscillators, and adding FX.

Pan-Pot, Clint Stewart, and Stephan Hinz Next up on Second State

The sophomore installment of Second State’s HUB series will drop on June 17.

American Berlin-based producer Clint Stewart takes the helm for this year’s HUB release, and across four collaborative tracks featuring The Reason Y, Stephan Hinz, Pan-Pot, and Michael Klein, shows his club-based versatility and prowess. The release also features Portuguese percussionist Peter Xoben—who joined Clint and Pan-Pot for “Zau!”—and fellow Portuguese artist Luio Onassis who provided his signature artwork for the release.

WeTransfer Debuts WeTalkMusic Feature Series

WeTransfer, the online file-sharing service known for its support of digital music and art, has dropped the first volume of WeTalkMusic, the website’s new series of music and interview recordings. The series, which aims to break free of the typical question-and-answer format, will host prominent artists of various genres for interviews that explore their defining tracks and creative influences through the use of informal, unexpected questions. “WeTalkMusic digs into who artists are, and how that identity formed,” says WeTransfer’s Music Partnership Director Lukas Nieuwenhuijsen. “We want artists to show different sides of themselves by selecting songs based on questions they wouldn’t normally be asked, to avoid the interview responses they’ve been repeating for years.” The intimate, conversational sessions will be hosted by Thris Tian, the co-founder of the leading underground music streaming platform Boiler Room, and the recordings will be available for listening via WeTransfer’s Mixcloud channel.

For WeTalkMusic’s premiere, Tian meets with British DJ-producer Bonobo and the band Hundred Waters at Form Festival in Arcosanti, Arizona, where the group talk of their artistic roots and creative vision while sampling seminal tracks in their development as musicians.

Sacred Ground Festival Shares Playlist; Stream in Full Here

Sacred Ground Festival, the three-dayer set to take place in Uckermark, Germany at the end of July, has shared a playlist in advance of this year’s edition.

The playlist, which is streamable in full below, is specially curated by festival founders Ry X and Frank Wiedemann, and includes the duo’s favorite tracks from the artists scheduled to perform this year.

Building on last year’s inaugural edition, there will now be an additional indoor stage open both nights after things wrap up on the main stage. Mathew Jonson, Âme and Howling (the joint project of both curators) will offer live performances, as well as DJ sets from the likes of Rødhad, Peter Kruder, Marcus Worgull, Elektro Guzzi, and Alex.Do.

Seb Zito “Bread Bin Bro”

As detailed in our recent in depth article on Fuse, Seb Zito has become something of a central figure in the London-based collective. As a resident alongside Rich NxT, Rossko and Archie Hamilton, not only does he DJ regularly at the Sunday parties at Village Underground, he also plays Fuse events all over Europe, and plays a major role in the A&R of the two labels, namely Fuse and Infuse.

Having released a string of EPs through the Fuse imprint, he is one of the most prolific producers within the crew—and today he has offered one of his recent unreleased tracks, entitled “Bread Bin Bro,” as one of today’s free downloads. The purpose, he says, is simple: to offer a little glimpse into what is to come later this year on Fuse, Infuse, Vatos Locos and his own label which will launch later this summer.

Melodie Set for Almanah EP

Cristi Tudorache (a.k.a.Melodie) has made quite a name for himself after two releases on Raresh‘s Metereze and French label Rora in 2015.

Following on from the recent news that he is set to release the Raw EP on Rackmizar, he is also set for a new four-tracker on Almanah, a new Romanian imprint under the curatorship of the Origami Sound / Interval crew.

Alderaan includes the much sought-after “Acid Saturday,” the track that has had threads dedicated to it all over the web after RPR Soundsystem played it at Weather festival in 2015.

Volte-Face Prepares New BleeD EP

Volte-Face has announced a new EP on his own BleeD imprint.

The four-tracker, entitled You Bury Me, will be the second release on the label this year, following on from DJ Spider, and will also be Volte-Face’s first original material since the All Grown Up EP, released via the label in November.

Once again, the focus is on open-minded dancefloors, with three dark and daring originals accompanied by a remix from Iori.

Hear a New Three-Hour Mix from Shonky

Apollonia co-founder Shonky is set to release his latest EP, Plombiere, on June 17.

The four-track EP will see his return to the Apollonia label arm, which he evidently launched back in 2012 with his The Minneapolis Touch EP. Outside of Apollonia’s Tour a Tour LP, Shonky has been quiet on the solo tip, but this latest EP see’s the Parisian return to the production fold with a collection of highly functional dancefloor weapons.

Alongside the announcement of Plombiere, Shonky and his Apollonia cohorts have announced a run of dates at Music On Amnesia, where they will be playing as residents, beginning today, June 10. The trio will also play CircoLoco’s Off Week party at Sonar, Half Baked vs Lola Ed, a slot at Secret Solstice Festival in Iceland, and a run of US dates that you can find below.

In support of his new EP—which can be preordered here—and the upcoming dates, Shonky has shared an exclusive three-hour mix, which you can hear via the player above.

Only Now “Flare”

With over 19 years of production experience, San Fransisco-based DJ and producer Kush Arora has taken to creating an exhilarating sound that is heavily influenced by “riots, resistance, and cyber war” under his Only Now moniker. With over 12 records under his belt, Arora has compassed a fascinating musical journey throughout the past two decades. From industrial to niche African dance, dub to Indo-Caribbean, Arora’s eclectic sound has led him to cut tunes with the likes of Balkan Beat Box and Jahdan Blackkkamoore, and share stages with the likes Flying Lotus, Kode9, Jack Dangers, and many more. Arora’s latest undertaking under his Only Now alias is a delirious, metallic, and modern sound for a rapid, digital, and uncertain age.

Having thrown out a self-released sophomore EP, titled Hollow, under his apocalyptic alias this past May, Kush Arora has graciously offered up the EP’s opening cut, “Flare,” as today’s XLR8R download. The track begins with a slow-motion descent of eerie digital waves that eventually crash into a pit of bloodthirsty drum arrangements and sprite-like synths. The artist describes the sonic scene as taking place “on the outer edges of a solar flare in a space kuduro ballet.”

Ben Lukas Boysen Releases Spells LP

Berlin-based composer and sound designer Ben Lukas Boysen has released his latest full-length, entitled Spells, on the London-based avant-garde imprint Erased Tapes. Home of composers Lubomyr Melnyk, Michael Price, and Nils Frahm, the label has proved to be a fitting home for Boysen and other envelope-pushing modern classical practitioners. “Finding my views understood, reflected and welcomed by Erased Tapes was an encouraging experience,” Boysen says of the move, “crowned by the offer to release ‘Spells’ and re-issue ‘Gravity’ with them.”

Mixed and mastered by Frahm himself—whose genre-transcending compositions have been leading the modern classical charge for some time now—the work fuses slow-building electronics with diverse instrumentation and thoughtful improvisation.
