Hear a Tiefschwarz Mix From Souvenir’s 10 Year Anniversary Party

Souvenir founders Ali and Basti Schwarz recently celebrated their label’s ten year anniversary with a stacked party at Berlin club Watergate that featured the likes of Detroit techno forefather Carl Craig and prolific deep house DJ-producer Locked Groove. The Schwarz brothers’ collaboration in Tiefschwarz is only a single facet of an extensive career that spans multiple decades. Both Ali and Basti have had stints with their own clubs—“ON -U” (1990 – 1993) and “Red Dog” (1993 – 1997)—as well as a slew of well-received releases and reworks.

In the spirit of celebration, the duo has shared a dynamic set recorded live from their anniversary party. The mix also teases at a forthcoming ten-year compilation, which will feature newcomers Dixie Yure and Mathame alongside longtime contributors Re. You and David K.

Mandar Announce Debut Album

Lazare Hoche, Malin Genie and S.A.M. will release their debut full-length together as Mandar via Oscillat in late September.

Oscillat was founded by the Mandar trio back in 2014, and has thus far been used mainly as an output for their own music (as well as recent EPs by Kasper Marott and Ferro). This September, the trio will release their first LP together—a five-vinyl box set that promises ambient excursions, recorded in Paris, Copenhagen and Amsterdam.

Ahead of the release, they will also put out three preliminary EPs throughout the summer, made up of alternate dancefloor-ready versions of the album’s cuts.

Oscillat 10 is due out on September 30 as a vinyl box set, as well as CD and digital formats.

Spacetravel Time To Wake Up

Melliflow is the latest imprint to emerge out of Berlin’s Club der Visionaere-centred scene. Headed up by local DJ-producer Vera and Romanian selector Alexandra, it’s been in the making for some time (with parties under the same name dating back to two summers ago). For their first outing, they call on Luca Cara (a.k.a. Spacetravel), another resident of the German capital who has been riding a steep upwards trajectory over the past year.

The record is only Cara’s second release, dropping with the resolute title Time To Wake Up—an indication of his feeling of having properly landed, perhaps. His debut slipped out via Binh’s Time Passages last July (offering a diverse and useful variety of styles, it still lines the platters of the scene’s best jockeys today), though he’s kept us guessing since.

Time To Wake Up follows much the same format of that debut EP, made up of another four largely differing tunes. Half of the record is devoted to the more stripped-back end of minimal house: the rigidly built “Personal Control” plays around with only a handful of elements—confident in its austerity, Cara maximizes its impact through the ocassional rearrangement of its shaky percussion. It’s put together with mellow moments in mind, a consideration that must also have been given to the rolling “Ambient Microphones.” Over its staunchly low-end bassline, eerie synths, muted keys and distant vocal snippets chop abruptly in and out, creating the feeling of confusion music.

The other half of the record tells a different story: exuberance and joy ooze from the unforgettable “Magic Track,” a cut that has already served as a highlight on many dancefloors for some months now. A loopy dial-up sample and warm chords build to a climactic drop, which eventually flows back casually into that original bouncy pattern. Equally, the funked-up “Strange Experience” brims with happiness, indicating another side to his production that didn’t reveal itself on his moodier debut; however, it’s still his slightly rough construction and marginal imperfections that render it so real, and give the music its depth. With the prospect of a forthcoming Perlon double pack also on the horizon, we can only hope that Cara might be hiding a few more tricks up his sleeve.

Time To Wake Up is scheduled for release on May 30. Pre-order it at Deejay.de and Juno.

A1. “Strange Experience”
A2. “Ambient Microphones”

Cassy Remixed by ItaloJohnson and Mr. Tophat & Art Alfie

“Back’ is set to be the first single from Cassy‘s debut album, Donna.

Co-produced by her “soul brother” King Britt, “Back” comes complete with remixes from Berlin trio ItaloJohnson and Karlovak’s Mr. Top Hat & Art Alfie.

“Back” is a deep, moody and stripped back yet emotive cut. Just like her previous productions, it’s an inventive, left-of center-house and techno affair.

Tracklisting:
A1 – Back
B1 – Back (ItaloJohnson Remix)
B2 – Back (Mr. Tophat & Art Alfie’s Karlovak Remix)

Back EP is scheduled for June 10 release.

Melodie Prepares New EP; Stream Snippets Here

Cristi Tudorache (a.k.a. Melodie) has a new EP on the way, for release this June.

Raw will be the inaugural release on Rackmizar, a new label by fellow Romanian Alex Puicea. It will be Tudorache’s second outing of 2016, following on from the Alderaan EP, which is scheduled for release next week via the Almanah imprint.

The announcement comes after a trio of well-received releases last year (which included “Acid Sunday,” a track with which he made his mark on the scene). Raw continues much in the same vein as those previous EPs, with four low-slung, rolling house numbers.

Raw is set for release in late June, and can be pre-ordered at Juno. Stream snippets below.

Nutrition “Eyes”

Nutrition, who divides his time evenly between Melbourne and his home in the Byron Bay rainforests, has developed a unique sound palette as of late by tapping the auras of his urban and natural locales. In his tracks more aptly suited to the urban dance floor, the Australian producer finds himself taking on a traditional house and techno motif with bold nuance. In others, he is able to strike a harmonious balance between the club sounds of the city and the tranquility of his natural surroundings.

For today’s XLR8R download, Nutrition has provided his track “Eyes.” The track presents a vaguely house-reminiscent groove that pauses patiently for brief moments of hazy, static-filled ambiance that are indicative of his ability to mesh body-moving rhythms with serene melodic components.

Nic Fanciulli Delivers Jamie xx Remix; Stream it Now

After catching up with Nic Fanciulli during this year’s edition of Coachella, the Saved Records label-head made it perfectly clear that he has a hectic summer ahead of him. In addition to putting on the highly anticipated event known as The Social Festival this September in Kent, UK, Fanciulli has also recently announced his first ever solo Ibiza residency, titled “We Are The Night.”

To help kick off this wild summer schedule, Nic Fanciulli has offered up an exclusive remix of Jamie xx‘s “See Saw” from his memorable 2014 album In Colour. Orbiting around a scaly and rolling bassline, the track’s ornate percussion dances around Romy‘s distant, lacquered, and wholly recognisable vocal work. The remix is an uplifting and roundabout groove that is bound to see plenty of rotation this summer in Ibiza and beyond.

When asking Fanciulli if there was anything coming up in the future during our brief interview at Coachella, he responded by saying: “I’m getting ready to drop my very first album later on this year. I can’t share any more details than that, but it will be late this year and the people that I have working with me on this record are absolutely amazing. I can’t wait till I can talk more about it and I will make sure that XLR8R will be the first to know.”

You can stream Nic Fanciulli’s remix of “See Saw” in the player below.

Peter Van Hoesen Preps EP for Dekmantel’s New UFO Series; Shares Track

On May 27, Peter Van Hoesen will inaugurate Dekmantel‘s new UFO series with his latest EP, Quadra.

Continuing the sound tradition of the UFO stage at the annual summer festival in Amsterdam, the UFO series, in the forthcoming months, will release music from Marcel Dettmann, Randomer, DJ Stingray, and Voiski, “championing ranky darkwave funk and industrial textures, jagged body music, and overall destructive energy from the worlds most talented and tenebrous souls alike.”

First up, Van Hoesen’s Quadra presents four tracks of the type of machine-driven anarchic techno we’ve come to expect from the techno stalwart. Hypnotic energy, syncopated rhythms, and dub-focused bass all feature heavily on what is a mind-bending EP.

The four-track EP will see release on 12″ and digital on May 27, with “P2ME” streaming in full via the player below.
