Alejandro Mosso “Tassaouit N’akhazi”

With over a decades’ worth of releases under his Funzion alias and his birth name, Argentinian Alejandro Mosso has found his stride as of late in a careful balance between acoustic and synthesized sounds. With a background in post-rock and electropop, Mosso’s eventual investment in house music grew naturally from an interest in sound design, experimentation, and music research. Over the past few years, Mosso has become fascinated with North African music, informing the evolution of his production to encompass an eclectic sound palette.

Mosso has given “Tassaouit N’akhazi” for today’s XLR8R download. An edit of an accapela track from Tuareg folk group Ikewan, the track is emblematic of his admiration for music of the Saharan region. With a stripped down, atmospheric melody and non-Western rhythmic components, Mosso accents the original vocals with a blend of organic forms and a studied approach to composition.

Premiere: Hear a New Track from Martux_M Crew & Markus Stockhausen

Martux_M Crew & Markus Stockhausen will continue their longstanding collaboration with the release of Atlas on May 30 via Resiliens.

Inspired by Cloud Atlas, the famous movie by the Wachowski brothers, Atlas is an emotionally drenched piece of minimalistic production. The EP’s dense sound design and exquisitely fragmented layers work as an intricately woven base for Stockhausen’s trumpets and flugelhorns, resulting in a mind-bending collection of tracks. Moving from left-field electronica to winding instrumentals and back again, Atlas lends itself to introspection and home listening.

Planetary Assault Systems Celebrates 22 Years of Music; Shares Video

Using one of his oldest and boldest alter-egos, Luke Slater has revealed the first installation of his new ‘Planetary Funk 22 Light Years‘ series, set to come out via his Mote-Evolver imprint.

For the past 22 years, the techno veteran’s otherworldly and atonal sound has influenced a huge number of electronic music enthusiasts all over the globe. The new series from Luke Slater will feature a bundle of “reissues, remixes, and interpretations of Planetary Assault Systems’ tracks by various artists Luke has worked with in over the years.”

You can watch a new, rapid, and enticing music video—produced by the29nov films—for Planetary Assault Systems’ track “Dungeon,” from his 1997 release Drone Sector on Peacefrog Records.

Man Power knows a thing or two about keeping things interesting. For one thing, through much of his career he had us all clutching at straws trying to uncover his secret identity. There were suggestions that the name was an alias of John Talabot, Michael Mayer, Andrew Weatherall, and Tim Sweeney; however, it eventually came to light that he was in fact the then unknown Englishman, Geoff Kirkwood. That early mystery aside, his musical output has always managed to keep us guessing: picked up straight off the bat by some of the scene’s biggest labels, his productions have straddled all corners of house and techno. In an interview with us last year, he explained that he used John Talabot’s Hivern Discs as an avenue for “a tougher, slower techno sound,” as well as some darker bits on Throne of Blood, leaving the “more spacey weirdo multi-influence stuff” for Jennifer Cardini’s Correspondant imprint. It was via the latter that he released his self-titled debut album last year, which marked him out as a real talent, and earned him a place in our Best New Artists of 2015.

True to form, his podcast for us this week is a genre-hopping 90 minutes worth of expertly-mixed selections. Working his way through picks by everyone, including Red Axes, Fort Romeau, Massive Attack to James Brown, as well as a bunch of dancefloor-ready material, Kirkwood weaves as colorful a tapestry as we have come to expect from him.

Gaslamp Killer, Seth Troxler, FKA Twigs to Headline Symbiosis Gathering

Symbiosis Gathering, the community-based music and arts festival, has revealed details surrounding the musical programming for its 2016 ‘Family Tree’ event. The past decade has seen Symbiosis grow into a leading force in California’s transformative festival movement, offering attendees a multi-disciplinary alternative to the corporatized festival experience, featuring a quality lineup of innovative visual art, aquatic dance parties, yoga, organic food, permaculture, and cutting-edge performances from across the electronic music spectrum. In a review of last year’s Re:Union gathering, XLR8R praised Symbiosis for not only curating an impeccable and diverse roster of music and art, but also for its ability to foster an environment of co-operation and acceptance not found at your typical West Coast festival.

This September, Symbiosis Gathering will return to its Woodward Reservoir location armed with another stacked musical program, with FKA Twigs, Santigold, The Gaslamp Killer, and FKJ among those billed as headliners. The gathering’s six immersive stages will also play host to a variety of underground talent, with heavyweights Seth Troxler and Pan-Pot booked for sets, as well as performances from the likes of Bedouin, Atish, the Desert Hearts Crew, Dengue Dengue Dengue!, and many more.

Versatile Records Announces 20 Years Compilation

Parisian label Versatile Records has revealed details of a forthcoming compilation in celebration of two decades in business.

Launched back in 1996 by Gilb’R, the label has been a constant stronghold in the French house scene. To mark 20 years of releases, the imprint is releasing a compilation of selected tracks from that time period. The first half of the tunes is representative of the first decade in the game (until 2006), hand-picked by the label’s first signing, I:Cube. The latter was curated by Gilb’r, with particular focus on the last three years at the label.

1996-2016: Versatile Records 20 Years is due out May 27, and can be pre-ordered at Bandcamp.

Tresor Reveals Berlin Festival Lineup

Tresor has announced the lineup for the forthcoming 25 years festival celebration, taking place July 21 – 24.

The event will take place over three days in the infamous club, as well as in the lower floor of Kraftwerk. The bill is a nod to the club’s 25 year history, as well as that of Berlin techno generally. Representing the institution’s links with Detroit are Robert Hood, Daniel Bell, Blake Baxter, Gerald Donald (performing as Arpanet), John Tejada, as well as Juan Atkins and Moritz von Oswald playing together with their German debut of Borderland. Aside from that, listeners can look forward to live sets from Surgeon, DJ Pete, and Regis and James Ruskin as O/V/R, as well as DJ sets from Donato Dozzy, DJ Stingray, Objekt, and many more.

Kompakt Returns with Another TOTAL Compilation

Legendary Cologne-based record store and label Kompakt has announced a release date for TOTAL 16, another installment in their famed compilation series. As they have done with the first 15 editions, the label will sift through its favorite releases of the past year—along with unreleased material—and reorganize individual tracks into an expertly curated whole. Since its 1998 launch, Kompakt has played an integral role in the evolution of techno and house sounds on a globalized scale, releasing acclaimed work from SSCI-9, Richie Hawtin, and The Orb, among others. The brand’s TOTAL series, which has spotlighted both electronic veterans and label up-and-comers, has been crucial in establishing its voice as one of the most reputable sources for dancefloor hits and cerebral electronic music alike. 

TOTAL 16 will be released as a limited edition double vinyl and CD on August 26, featuring music from cofounder Jürgen Paape, a collaborative effort between The Modernist and Hot Chip’s Joe Goddard, and more.

Kassiel “Fluttering”

With a forthcoming debut coming soon via Bad Panda Records, the riveting Italian-based duo known as Kassiel has pinpointed a sound that is spellbinding, shivery, and utterly mollifying. The duo consists of multi-instrumentalist Federico Bisozzi and experienced DJ-producer/drummer Andrea Normanno, who has spent the past ten years honing his ability to craft a raw percussive sound that gives the music of Kassiel a true spark of acuteness.

Ahead of this excitingly fresh duo’s debut, Normanno, Bisozzi, and Bad Panda Records have amiably agreed to offer up the track “Fluttering” as one of today’s XLR8R download. Sliding across a glassy sonic atmosphere with a scuttling and cautious resolve, the tracks broken drum moulds allow the tune to advance with a gentle stamina that is as authentically peaceful as it is stirring.

Stream a Track from the New Archie Hamilton EP

Archie Hamilton is set to release a new EP via his own Moscow Records, the label’s first release of 2016.

The title track on the A side is an uplifting piece of minimal house blending a familiar synth line with a trippy vocal and his characteristic groove. Ali Nasser’s remix on the flip brings together both classic percussion and synth elements, in a more contemporary style.
