XLR8R Podcast 386: Laurent Garnier — Nuits Sonores 2015 Festival Edition

If there was ever an artist who doesn’t need an introduction, it’s Laurent Garnier—but hell, we’ll give him one anyway. After hitting the decks in the late ’80s under the DJ Pedro moniker—at Manchester, England’s Haçienda, no less—Garnier kicked off the Wake Up parties at Paris’ Rex Club in the early ’90s, helping propel that nightspot into the upper ranks of international clubbing; he and partner Eric Morand launched one of house and techno’s most influential labels, F Communications, which between 1994 until 2008 released scores of pioneering records from St. Germain, Alexkidd, Mr. Oizo, Jori Hulkkonen,Vince Watson, Garnier himself and many, many others; he’s produced some of clubland’s all-time great tracks, including “Crispy Bacon,” “The Man with the Red Face,” “Acid Eiffel,” and “The Sound of the Big Babou,” just to name a few; he recently unveiled Home Box, a collection of tracks from his back catalog along with some nicely curated remixes, on the recently revived F Comm; and, this summer, he’s releasing the English-language version of his book, cowritten with David Brun-Lambert, titled Electrochoc, documenting both the never-ending rise of his career and that of dance music in general. We could keep going here, but you get the idea—the man is both an icon and one of the hardest working guys in the biz.

Somehow, after a quarter of a century, Garnier—who’s a headliner at the so-close-we-can-feel-it Nuits Sonores festival, held from May 13 through May 17 in Lyon, France—remains utterly enthused about clubbing and dance music. We think that enthusiasm should be mixed with pride, as the clubbing world would be a far poorer place without him. For that reason, and for so many more, XLR8R is proud to present this beauty of a mix from Garnier himself, brimming with the kind of electronic goodness that we’ve come to expect from one of clubland’s enduring artists.

DJ/Producer Butch Announces US Tour

Revered DJ/Producer/remixer Butch (a.k.a Bülent Gürler) has announced a one-week six-date U.S tour starting on 12th June.

The tour, which kicks off in Detroit, before shows in Colorado, Denver, Miami, New York, Massachusetts and Illinois, continues an already remarkable 2015 for the German techno stalwart, after he recently stepped up as the latest producer to take part in the esteemed Watergate mix series.

Premiere: Stream a Track From Steve Rachmad’s Forthcoming Record as STERAC

Since its inception in 1994, Steve Rachmad’s STERAC alias has yielded somewhere north of 20 releases for labels including 100% Pure, Klockworks and Tresor, but until now the project has never appeared on Mote-Evolver, the label run by fellow techno veteran Luke Slater. That’s all set to change in July with the release of a four-tracker named Different Strokes, and Rachmad has shared an exclusive pre-release track stream with XLR8R.

“Stroke 3” (the tracks are named simply from “Stroke 1” to “Stroke 4”) is emblematic of a release that keeps things as spartan and uncluttered as possible while retaining Rachmad’s characteristic buoyancy and depth of personality. “Stroke 3” can be streamed on the player below ahead of the full release of Different Strokes on Mote-Evolver on July 6.

Final Two Remixes of Akkord’s HTH035 CD Package Pressed to Vinyl for HTH040 EP

Due to popular demand, the final two remixes which completed Akkord’s recent HTH035 CD package have been pressed to vinyl ready for worldwide release on 25 May 2015.

Fis (Tri-Angle / Loopy) and Regis (Downwards / Sandwell District) both sourced elements from “Gravure” and “Continuum”, tracks from the HTH020 EP. The former conveys experimental drones and left-of-centre D&B abstraction in his reworking, whilst the latter loops sludgy dub techno atmospherics in his inimitable style.

Mastered by Matt Colton at Alchemy and pressed on 180g white vinyl, the HTH040 12” is limited to 1000 units, a companion piece to the HTH020 and HTH030 EPs, with a complimentary colour scheme, debossed cover with postcard insert.

Akkord will return with some original material before the end of the year, but the HTH catalogue series is now complete.

Levon Vincent’s Protégés Terriers Prep New EP

Irish duo Terriers—famously the beneficiaries of some truly inspiring generosity from Levon Vincent last year, have just announced a new three-track EP. Octagon will be the first release on the new, Berlin-based Rhythm Nation label, and is said to find the pair turning out “melodic tracks that range from raw (without being harsh) to deep, stringy, Detroit-rooted techno. No peak-time tools, but tracks to play over and over.”

Over the weekend, Scuba previewed EP track “Believing The Crystal” on BBC Radio 1 ahead of his Essential Mix, and a rip can be streamed on the player below. The EP’s full release comes on June 22 via Rhythm Nation.

Abstract Division Prep Metropolis EP

Dutch techno duo Paul Boex and Dave Miller (a.k.a. Abstract Division) have announced a new EP called Metropolis that pays homage to Detroit. Alongside the title track’s original version, which sticks close to the spirit of melodic, rhythmic minimalism for which the city is known, the EP also features remixes by Oscar Mulero (under his Trolley Route alias, which hasn’t been heard of since 2010), Function, who heads for dark territory, and Marcel Fengler, who infuses things with his trademark Berlin funk. The original mix of the title track can be streamed on the player below ahead of the full release of Metropolis on June 22 via Dynamic Reflection.

Autechre Announce First London Headline Show in Five Years

On the 21st November 2015, the Electric Brixton will play host to an extraordinarily rare all-nighter hosted by electronic music pioneers, Autechre. This will be their first London headline show in five years.

Formed in 1987 Sean Booth and Rob Brown, Autechre spearheaded the growth of IDM’s popularity in the UK alongside the likes of Aphex Twin, growing to become a leading act of Warp Records, one of the most forward-thinking electronic music labels through which all Autechre’s albums have been released.

Completing the line-up will be PAN’s Objekt, Diagonal boss Powell, noise artist Russell Haswell and Autechre’s regular tour DJ Rob Hall. The show will run from 10pm – 4am.

Tickets go on sale this Thursday (May 14) at 10am from the Soundcrash website.

Queen Leaf “Marble Room”

At the end of this month, Portland/Brooklyn-based imprint Blankstairs will release the Marble Room EP from LA producer and DJ Joseph Craig (a.k.a. Queen Leaf). The EP finds the rising producer exploring the outskirts of a bass-focused sound which is as equally at home in the club as it is home listening. The two originals—”Gone” and “Marble Room”—are backed up by remixes from No Secrets Radio affiliates Patrick Brian and Moiety. “Marble Room” is a spacious cut that goes the less-is-more route, focusing on abrasive percussion and wall shaking bass frequencies. The track is spurred on by rolling toms and floating, atmospheric pads, with an almost wolf-like howl echoing throughout. One Tribe Announces Lineup for Inaugural Year

This September, One Tribe Festival will add to California’s burgeoning festival scene with the inaugural edition, taking place in Perris, California. The festival will feature five stages hosted by Beatport, German festival giant Awakenings, Jamie Jones’ Paradise, Crosstown Rebels present Get Lost, and B3’s West Coast Legends. One Tribe has also invited rising San Diego crew Desert Hearts to host the Friday night camping experience.

The festival will take place at the incredible Lake Perris State Recreation Area on September 25-26, with the sandy beaches of Lake Perris as the backdrop. You can check out the stage curations below, with more information available here.

Premiere: Hear Deadbeat Remix Nitin’s “Dubbed Out”

Toronto based DJ and producer Nitin will return to No.19 today with his latest single, “Dubbed Out.”

Although Nitin’s tracks have popped up on samplers and compilations, it has been almost three years since his last single dropped. The release opens with the original mix, a brilliant dub house cut filled with subtle percussion, drawn-out chords, and a deep, sub-bass groove; it’s an emotive and hypnotic slice of deep house in the truest sense. “Dubbed Out” also arrives with a stacked set of remixes headed up by Dutch techno artist Steve Rachmad who turns in four varied reworks of the original—including a vinyl only mix under his Parallel 9 moniker. Rounding things out is Montreal’s Deadbeat, with his version of the original staying true to the name with spaced-out tape delay, a thick low end, and rolling percussion.
