Hivern to Release Debut Album From INIT

Barcelona imprint Hivern has announced a summer release for Two Pole Resonance, the debut LP from Rhein-Main pair Benedikt Frey and Nadia D’Alò (a.k.a. INIT). The album follows on from the March release of a self-titled 12″ on the label, which featured a couple of tracks from the album plus remixes from Willie Burns, C.P.I., and Cliff Lothar. The album finds the duo further exploring a low-slung, throbbing new-wave sound awash with moody keys and even moodier vocals. Two Pole Resonance is due for release on July 13 via Hivern, ahead of which we have included its artwork and tracklist below. A further pre-album sampling of the pair’s slow’n’low sensibilities can be had over at RBMA, meanwhile, where they have just today dropped a DJ mix with the foreboding name Train Wreck.

Paul Kalkbrenner Readies New Album

Veteran melodic techno producer Paul Kalkbrenner, who recently signed to Columbia/Sony, has announced that he’ll release a new LP in the summer. As Resident Advisor reports, the album samples artists such as Elvis Presley, Janis Joplin and Bob Dylan, a result of Kalkbrenner being the “first artist to ever be given access to the master vaults and tapes of Sony and Columbia,” thus removing the legal hurdles that artists normally face in clearing major-label samples. The LP, which is Kalkbrenner’s seventh and is simply entitled 7, will get its full release on Columbia on August 7. Its lead single “Cloud Rider” can be heard over on Spotify now, and we have included the album’s full tracklist below.

Premiere: Hear a Track From Donato Dozzy’s New EP for Claque Musique

Following on from the recent news regarding Italian maestro Donato Dozzy‘s new EP for Claque Musique, XLR8R is proud to present the exclusive streaming of “Cassandra,” the EP’s title track.

“Cassandra” is a super deep and hypnotic cut that opens with a thumping kick and silky-smooth pads, with the techno innovator teasing out delayed vocal-like synth phrases that lock the listener in before a huge sub-bassline lands. Dozzy focuses on these main intersecting elements which gradually evolve, topped off by rolling drums and razor-edged hi-hats. Also on the release is “II,” a slab of experimental sound design that swells and retracts, gurgling away to nothing and topping off an essential new chapter for the peerless techno craftsmen.

You can stream “Cassandra” in full below, ahead of the full release on May 20.

Rioux “In Transit”

We last heard from Brooklyn-based producer Rioux at the end of last year when his track “Trails” was featured in our Top 100 downloads of 2014. This month, Rioux returns with his latest EP, Evolver, released on May 8 via Connect—the multimedia label founded by Rioux to showcase “visionary musicians and visual artists across disciplines.” Written and produced in Detroit and New York, Evolver is a four-tracker filled with the sort of artistry we’ve come to expect from the visionary artist. EP cut “In Transit” is a multicolored journey through cinematic soundscapes, jazz-like flourishes, and tightly wrapped rhythmic structures, with Rioux’s moody vocals scattered on top. You can purchase the full EP here, with “In Transit” available as a free download below.

Jeff Mills Plots Second Exhibitionist CD and DVD

Eleven years ago, Jeff Mills delivered Exhibitionist, a combined mix CD and DVD release that featured the Detroit techno figurehead mixing across three decks. The package was widely regarded as a benchmark of technical skill and on-point selection, and now, Mills has announced a second Exhibitionist package, which will see release in September on his own Axis label. In an interview with FACT earlier this year, Mills is quoted as saying, “It’s going to be very interesting. It still falls in the same line as the first Exhibitionist—it’s an observation about the art form of DJing, but it’s from a different perspective. We cover the art form in a very comprehensive way in the second one, so this probably will be the last one, but it really explains a lot about the mindset and the concepts and the procedure of how a DJ does what he does.”

Ahead of the release of the Exhibitionist 2 CD and DVD package, Mills will deliver a four-track 12″ titled Exhibitionist 2-Part 1 on June 15 through Axis. Clips can be previewed here via FIT Distribution, and the EP’s artwork and tracklist are on view below. (via Resident Advisor)

Premiere: Stream a Track From Steve Bug’s New EP on Poker Flat Recordings

With over 80 releases, three outstanding labels (Dessous, Audiomatique, and Poker Flat) and at least 40 remixes to his name, Steve Bug is a one of electronic music’s most prolific ambassadors. Next up for the German minimal dance connoisseur is another stellar release: the Coconut Paradise EP via his own Poker Flat Recordings, which is now in its 16th year.

Title track “Coconut Paradise” is a master class in crisp, high-definition house, as dubby synths, a solid kick and an insistent bass stab form a deeply hypnotic groove. Sustained tones surge in from the distanceall the elements coming together to create a perpetual motion machine. “Thick As Mud” lives up to its name: this is house music that draws on the deep and deadly palette and spacious arrangements of dubstep and glitch, burnished with snickering percussive repetitions and scything synths. “Pants on Fire” is a restlessly inventive bricolage of unconventional percussive sounds and textures. Metallic tones ping and bounce deliciously in every direction.

“Coconut Paradise” can be pre-ordered here and streamed in full below, ahead of the EP release on May 18.

Larry Heard Reissues Fingers Inc.’s Another Side LP

“Can You Feel It” is arguably one of house music’s most influential tunes. Released in the late ’80s by seminal Chicago group Fingers Inc.—the trio consisting of a young Larry Heard with vocalists Robert Owens and Ron Wilson—the single helped to define the genre of deep house, along with other anthems like “Mystery of Love.” Both tracks featured on Fingers Inc.’s first and only album, Another Side, released via UK imprint Jack Trax in 1988, and now, the LP is being reissued on triple vinyl through Heard’s own Alleviated imprint.

No official release date has been disclosed as of yet, but the 16-track affair is already up for preview and pre-order on Rush Hour, and its complete tracklist can be viewed below. (via Resident Advisor)
