Mike Gao “Just Do You”

Mike Gao is one smart guy; the LA-based producer has developed his own inventive music-making iPad app, Polyplayground, and is currently a professional music technologist and a PhD candidate. Given that, it’s east to imagine that the man’s intelligence just can’t help but seep through into his beats, such as on the soul-burnt “Just Do You,” one of 14 tracks set to appear on his forthcoming Migamo LP for Alpha Pup (out on January 20). A dexterous production, “Just Do You” moves in such a fashion that Gao always seems two steps ahead of the listener—while we’re focused on the tune’s squiggly lead synths, Gao has an assemblage of warped chords waiting in the wings; while we get wrapped up in the track’s bluesy swoon, Gao has a stuttered breakdown ready just around the corner. Thankfully, the producer’s musical intelligence never gets in the way of “Just Do You,” ultimately making the fast-evolving, thoughtfully crafted track just a downright enjoyable listen.

Watch a New Video from Matias Aguayo

Longstanding DJ/producer and Cómeme label founder Matias Aguayo has revealed a new video for his latest single on Kompakt, “Run Away from the Sun.” Lyrically, the track (which was released back in November on his Legende 12″) is said to be a “melancholic story about a vampire’s night life” and the need to leave the company of others once the sun rises. The video, however, takes some comedic liberties with the storyline; directed by Sander Houtkruijer and shot in Berlin, it portrays Aguayo as a vampire with a cooking show. Sadly, since vampires cannot eat human food, “the passion he has for his dishes can never be fully realized.”

MUTEK.ES Announces Second Round of Acts

The Barcelona edition of MUTEK Festival, MUTEK.ES, has revealed the second round of acts billed for the upcoming sixth annual event, which runs from March 4 through 7 at various locations throughout the city. Among the new batch of names released today is Robert Henke, presenting his laser and light show Lumiére II, Pantha du Prince (presenting new material from his upcoming album), Jesper Dahlback as The Persuader, Minimal Wave/Cititrax founder Veronica Vasicka (pictured above), and A/V projects Reykjavik 606 and Woulg. A local contingent of Spanish and Quebec-based artists—including Barcelona’s own Sau Poler—will also be represented, joining the likes of previously announced festival performers such as Move D and Magic Mountain High, Zenker Brothers, Kangding Ray, and Talaboman.

Art and technology foundation Phonos has also announced a three-day residency program as part of the festival; applications can be found here, while details of MUTEK Barcelona’s first program announcement can be found here and a complete list of featured artists is available here via the festival’s website.

Levon Vincent Shares Tracklist for Upcoming LP

Levon Vincent has unveiled the tracklist for his upcoming self-titled album. The New York-bred, Berlin-based DJ/producer first hinted that his inaugural full-length effort was in the works earlier this week in a Facebook post and teaser video, and today, further details have surfaced. Resident Advisor reports that the LP will comprise 11 new tracks distributed across four 12″s, to be released through Vincent’s own Novel Sound label.

Levon Vincent will apparently be arriving “very soon,” though no official release date has been shared as of yet, and its complete tracklist can be found below.

Herva Readies New EP for All City, Shares Previews

Not long after releasing his Instant Broadcast LP on Delsin, Italian producer Hervè Atsè Corti (a.k.a. Herva) will return with a new 12″ on All City next month. In keeping with previous outings, the upcoming six-track EP is said to run a broad stylistic gamut—from the “sample-based, broken-beat leanings” of title track “How to Mind Your Own” to the “frenetic techno” of “Pressure Bumps” and “melodic, Aphex-style vibes” of “She Is.”

How to Mind Your Own is expected to drop in February, and while no exact release date has been shared as of yet, EP clips and a complete tracklist can be found below.

FK “CW (Headman Edit)”

Coinciding with the recent release of the REPVI compilation via his own Relish label, Swiss producer Robi Insinna (a.k.a. Headman) has elected to share a stripped-down edit of the late house pioneer Frankie Knuckles’ classic “Cold World” track (here, the title has been shortened to FK “CW” to make it clear that this is a bootleg edit). Slowing down the original tune a touch and infusing it with a chunky disco bounce, Headman’s edit is built around the original’s more memorable elements—Knuckles’ active bassline and drum-machine percussion appear in a slightly lower register, while the harmonies of Jamie Principle’s chorus are laid out every so often across the edit’s five-plus-minute run. A cautiously nimble take on a dance music classic, Headman’s “Cold World” edit can be downloaded for free below, where a full stream of his disco-minded label’s most recent offering can also be found.

Premiere: Stream Session Victim’s Remix for the Inaugural Release from Splendor & Squalor

After somewhat quietly delivering one of our favorite tracks and favorite releases of 2014, Session Victim appears early on in the new year with a new remix which will help kickstart the run of new the Splendor & Squalor imprint.

Billed as a vinyl-only house outpost, Splendor & Squalor’s inaugural effort is set to arrive next week in the form a collaborative EP from label co-founders Brame and Hamo (both currently based in Berlin). Each producer offers up a solo track for the effort along with the collaborative “Clockwerk,” which has also been placed in the hands of Session Victim, who stretch the track out to a groove-laden seven minutes filled to the brim with detailed layers of percussion, swimmingly soulful textures, and an appropriately low-slung bassline.

Session Victim’s rework of “Clockwerk” can be streamed in full below before the Splendor & Squalor label’s inaugural release lands on January 19.

Nozinja and Tessela Prep Split Release, Share Previews

Independent online music retailer-turned-imprint Bleep has announced a one-off release that pairs Nozinja—the South African artist and recent Warp signee behind Shangaan electro—with R&S affiliate Tessela. Entitled Wa Chacha, the idea for the forthcoming 12″ reportedly came together earlier this year, when the two producers met in a London pub for a pint. A press release goes on to describe that the pair “got on like a house on fire,” exchanging techniques and notes from their respective (and markedly different) approaches to production. Wa Chacha is the result of an impromptu recording session held later that day at Tessela’s studio in East London, and offers two discursive takes on Nozinja’s original single by the same name.

Wa Chacha drops in both 12″ vinyl and digital formats on February 9, and a teaser video and tracklist can be found below.

Terence Fixmer Preps New Album for CLR

A veteran producer with over two decades of releases to his name, Terence Fixmer has shared the details of Depth Charged, his next full-length outing. Slated to appear in vinyl form on CLR next month (with a digital release to follow in March), the record has been crafted as one complete, 10-piece techno composition that ultimately is said to serve as the French artist’s most introspective album to date.

At this point, audio previews are yet to surface for Depth Charged, though the record’s artwork is on display above and its full tracklist can be seen below. Fixmer’s forthcoming album for Chris Liebing’s CLR label will see its official vinyl release on February 23, with a digital release slated for March 9.

Braille Details New EP for Friends of Friends, Streams Track

As we reported last month, NYC producer Braille (who serves as half of the Sepalcure duo alongside Machinedrum) has signed to LA label Friends of Friends for an upcoming EP and LP. Now, Braille (real name Praveen Sharma) has detailed the first of those forthcoming releases, sharing a new track in the process.

Sharma’s Everyone’s Crazy EP will officially land via Friends of Friends on February 10, showcasing six new productions “heavy on 808 kicks and field recordings sourced from deep within his own audio library.” Serving as our first taste is “Too Forward,” a slow-motion beat flush with watery chords and smoky R&B echoes. Braille’s latest tune can be streamed in full below, where the complete tracklist for his Everyone’s Crazy EP can also be found; the producer is expected to follow up the record with his first full-length effort, Mute Swan, in May.
