Ahead of the release of its Spezmodia EP via Monkeytown on January 10, veteran German electronic duo Mouse on Mars has announced that it is auctioning off a single-edition release exclusively on eBay. Dave Smith Introduces Prophet 12 Module

After releasing its Prophet 12 keyboard earlier this year (a unit that narrowly missed our Best Gear of 2013 list), Dave Smith Instruments has introduced the Prophet 12 Module, which fits the powerful synth into a much more compact package. Taking the main voice board from the Prophet 12 keyboard, the module version of the synth gives users access to the same sound-sculpting power with a series of knobs that can be switched to access the different aspects of each oscillator, as well as having dedicated knobs for each oscillators’ high- and low-pass filters. The video below finds Dave Smith himself detailing the features of the new unit, which is not expected to hit stores until some time next year.

Check Out Larry Heard’s Remix of Disclosure

After UK pop-house duo Disclosure released a remix-heavy special edition of its Settle LP yesterday, Chicago-based house veteran Larry Heard (a.k.a. Mr. Fingers) has shared his “Chillout Mix” of Settle‘s closing cut “Help Me Lose My Mind.” For his take, Heard dials down the mood, drawing out his cascading synth lines over sparse bass and drums, while singling out the gorgeous vocal performance from London Grammar‘s Hannah Reid. A stream of Heard’s remix can be found below.

Club to Club Shares Kode9-Curated Sound Design Project, Launches Remix Contest

As part of last month’s Club to Club festival (our full review of which can be read here), the week-long event’s organizers teamed up with the British Council and Hyperdub label head Kode9 to curate an audio tribute to the festival’s home city of Torino, Italy. The six electro-acoustic works that make up the resulting A Great Symphony for Torino can now be streamed in full, and furthermore, are also available to be remixed.

As the story goes, five local outfits—2L8, OOBE, Vaghe Stelle, XIII x Sabla, and a group of Sound Design students from IED Milano—were selected to honor a historical location within Torino using only sounds recorded from those locations. In addition, Kode9 has added a composition of his own to the collection, focused on the city’s Monte dei Cappuccini.

All six of those contributions to the A Great Symphony for Torino project can be streamed below, and they are also all part of a newly launched remix contest, which offers stems for every production (with the exception of Kode9’s effort, which is actually a rework combining elements of all the other compositions). These stems can be remixed and submitted to the artistic director of Club to Club, who will select a winning rework and include it in the project’s next release. Submissions are due by January 6, 2014, and must be sent to “info[at]clubtoclub.it with the subject ‘A Great Symphony for Turin Remix,’ your name (or moniker), and a link to download the track, which will then be uploaded on the project’s Soundcloud page.” The individual stems can be downloaded here, and more details can be found on the Great Symphony for Turin’s website, here.

Check Out New Mixes from Patten and Ital

London experimentalist and recent Warp signee patten recently released his first EP for the label, and has just today followed it up with a dizzying mix. In addition, Brooklyn-based producer Ital (pictured above) dropped a reflective, techno-heavy DJ set today.

“A mix of 45 minutes was requested, so the piece is comprised of 45 unaltered minute-long sections of music, one after the other, connected by various logics,” patten says of his podcast for Dummy. On the other hand, Ital’s naturally unfolding set for Juno Plus—featuring the likes of Sandwell District, DJ Sprinkles, Robert Hood, Drexciya, and the mixmaster himself—is composed of “tracks ‘consuming’ each other,” according to the artist, which draws him in more than “raw and quick dirty cuts.” Both patten’s and Ital’s mixes can be streamed and downloaded below; tracklists and interviews with both artists can be found here and here, respectively.

Download a New EP from Machinedrum

After appearing on our site just yesterday, messing around in the studio with Ableton’s Push controller, and delivering two of our favorite tracks of the year, Machinedrum has popped up with a surprise EP for download. Said to have come from the same period of creative ouput that yeilded Travis Stewart’s ambitious Vapor City LP, the Vizion EP consists of six deeply textured ambient compositions which—as Mixmagreports—are meant to represent the “Vizion Center District” of the producer’s conceptual Vapor City metropolis. The entire Vizion EP can be streamed below, and downloaded for free by signing up to become a “Vapor City Citizen” (which is essentially joining Machinedrum’s email newsletter) here.

Simian Mobile Disco Readies New 12″ with Trevino Remixes

Returning to their own Delicacies label after the dropping the Tong Zi Dan EP back in October, the UK synth connoisseurs of Simian Mobile Disco (pictured above) have announced a four-track 12″, which will feature remixes from Manchester producer Trevino (a.k.a. Marcus Kaye). Snake Bile Wine‘s title track slinks along with an insistent techno pulse and decaying synth riff, and Trevino provides two distinct techno remixes of the cut—one dubby and minimal, the other more glossy and anxious. “Balut,” the single’s b-side—named for an unborn duck fetus cooked inside a boiled egg—is an unnerving slab of demanding techno, with gurgling, industrial synths. Snake Bile Wine‘s physical release is set for January 20, 2014, and the digital version will land on January 27.

Headaches “Snacks”

This year has seen a swelling of producers trafficing in raw, noisy, hardware-centric tracks, but “Snacks,” a new tune from Brooklyn-based artist Headaches (a.k.a. Landon Speers), is an intriguing study in the soothing power of crystalline sonics. Ethereal waves of melodies weave in and out of clean kicks and bright, snappy percussion layers while a reversed synth pad congregates with a rumbling bass. “Snacks” finds Speers effortlessly lacing together several counter-melodies and low-end girth, resulting in a hypnotic tapestry of sound.

Martyn Teases Upcoming Album with New Single

Washington, DC-based 3024 label boss Martyn has spent most of 2013 spreading the experience of his new live audio/visual performance and focusing on his imprint. Out of the spotlight, he also seems to have been working on new productions for the follow-up album to 2011’s outstanding Ghost People. We currently have no concrete details about that release, but the longstanding DJ/producer did just share the first taste of its tracklist.

Martyn posted his new “Be My Own Pupil” tune to Bandcamp with the following message: “This is one of the tracks to come out of the lengthy sessions for my new album The Air Between Your Words (coming out on 3024 soon). I am putting it up on Bandcamp and have you decide what you would like to pay for it. All proceeds minus fees will go to a really inspiring initiative called the Holistic Life Foundation. This small grass roots organization from West Baltimore helps kids develop their inner lives through yoga, mindfulness, and self-care.” The relatively mellowed-out production can be streamed and downloaded via the player below, and we’ll be sure to share the particulars of The Air Between Your Words once they become available.
