DJ Rashad I Don’t Give a Fuck

The three years since the release of Planet Mu’s influential Bangs & Works Vol.1 compliation have seen a notable increase in the cross-pollination of ideas between Chicago juke and the UK’s underground music circuit. On the one hand, numerous UK DJs operating on the fringes of dubstep and house have come to embrace the frenetic simplicity of footwork. Both on record and in clubs, it’s now fairly commonplace to find the higher tempos and/or distinctive rapid-fire rhythmic patterns and vocal cuts of juke nestled amongst the more traditionally UK-rooted sounds of garage, grime, and dubstep. In the case of DJ Rashad at least, this influence seems to have been somewhat bidirectional. Having been given a platform across the pond by both Planet Mu’s Mike Paradinas and, more recently, Hyperdub boss Steve Goodman (a.k.a Kode9,) Rashad’s more recent releases have seen him increasingly absorbing traits from UK dance culture, from sampling distinctly British idioms on last year’s album cut “Bakk Off” to experimenting with wonderfully icy jungle workouts for “Let It Go” on Rollin’, his Hyperdub debut back in March. This second EP for the label continues that progression—it’s undoubtedly still a footwork record, but as his song structures get tighter and his productions cleaner, Rashad seems more at home than ever amongst the broad and forward-thinking bass experiments of the Hyperdub roster.

“I Don’t Give a Fuck” itself is a deceptively minimal concoction of hyper-kinetic synth bleeps and booming, single-note sub hits, all spurred on by a playfully nihilistic spoken-word vocal. In a similar manner to Kode9’s recent single “Xingfu Lu,” it’s a track that exists in the space where the best traits of juke and classic dubstep collide; combining imposing sub frequencies with fragile lead elements, the song creates a deceptive sense of stasis despite its undoubtedly fast pace. By contrast, “Brighter Day,” which sees Rashad working with longtime collaborator DJ Spinn, is pure energy. The pair combines the classic footwork ingredients of rough, jarring vocal cuts and metallic drum machines with full-blown junglist breaks, creating something that comes across like an updated version of classic low-budget rave music.

The EP’s slight low point comes in the shape of Freshmoon collaboration “Everybody,” a knowingly absurd combination of mockingly over-dramatized vocals and day-glo synth breakdowns. It’s over-the-top presence grates a little with the rest of the tracks, but there’s still something likeable about the tune’s playful juxtaposition of melodrama and overly amped party music.

“Way I Feel,” a joint production with DJ Manny, takes things in the complete opposite direction by combining a soulful female vocal with rhythmically complex synth loops to create the EP’s most interesting offering. While the song’s tinny beats and heavily chopped samples are still pure juke, there’s something about the glacial synth tones and unpredictable hi-hat rhythms that brings to mind the lounge-jazz-meets-drum & bass sound of ’90s LTJ Bukem as much it does Chicago. It’s yet more evidence that, whilst Rashad’s roots remain firmly planted within footwork, he’s increasingly displaying outward-looking ambitions—and it’s this viewpoint that makes him one of the genre’s most important players.

Jel to Release Third LP for Anticon, Shares First Single

Today, Bay Area producer/rapper and Anticon co-founder Jel (a.k.a. Jeffrey Logan) shared the details of his third full-length, which will be released next month via Anticon. Entitled Late Pass, the new LP is said to be more minimal than its predecessors, and, according to Logan, is a response to “an easily seduced culture in a twisted tornado of cell phones and information overload.” Jel’s next record drops on August 20, album track “La Resolve” can be streamed below, where the artwork and tracklist for Late Pass can also be found. More of the release can be previewed over at the Anticon website, here.

Jonwayne Readies Final Piece of Mixtape Trilogy, Shares New Track

Following the release of the plainly titled Casette and Casette 2 mixtapes for Stones Throw, prolific LA producer/MC Jonwayne has announced that he will drop the third piece of his trilogy later this month. Breaking the naming convention with the title The Marion Morrison Mixtape, Wayne’s next release will conclude the series with a helping of new tracks, some which are said to feature the talents of Captain Murphy (Flying Lotus’ MC handle), Jeremiah Jae, Zeroh, and Oliver the 2nd. The offering will be available as a free download and limited cassette on July 30, but before then, a stream of “Altitude”—a particularly stoney, jazz-laced cut co-produced alongside Mndsgn—can be streamed below.

Perc and Truss Ready Collaborative EP, Stream Title Track

Perc Trax label head Ali Wells (a.k.a. Perc) and Tom Russel (a.k.a. Truss) have announced they will release a collaborative EP next month. Set to appear on Well’s Perc Trax Ltd. sublabel, the forthcoming Spiker EP (artwork above) will feature three new tracks from the pair of London producers, which—as Wells explains in an interview with Juno Plus—provide “a snapshot of what is happening in London right now—acid lines, tough drums and an emphasis on rawness, rather than atmospheric sounds… It is a direct sound, one that gets to the point quickly without any unnecessary fluff.” Before Perc & Truss’ Spiker EP drops in mid-August, its tracklist and a stream of the title track can be found below.

Ursa Minor “October (Shenoda Remix)”*Invader *

London vocalist/producer Gabrielle Cooke (a.k.a. Ursa Minor) has a new single called “October” on the way—arriving, somewhat ironically, on July 29. As part of that fast-approaching release, Hypercolour affiliate and fellow UK artist Shenoda has been enlisted to remix the tune, the result of which is this seven-minute excursion into deep dancefloor grooves, refracted vocal processing, and—especially in the bubbling arpeggio line that appears just ahead of the four-minute mark—a subtle hint of electro-pop appeal.

Lorn Readies New EP for Ninja Tune

Milwaukee producer Lorn (a.k.a. Marcos Ortega) has detailed his forthcoming Debris EP before it drops this fall via Ninja Tune. The four-track release will follow Lorn’s sophomore LP from last year, Ask the Dust, and finds the hip-hop- and dubstep-influenced producer working along typically unsettling lines, combining crumbling synth sounds and scraping soundscapes with menacingly hard-edged beats. Before Debris sees a release in both 10″ vinyl and digital formats on September 2, its artwork and tracklist can be found below; previews of each track can be found over at Bleep, here.

Following on the heels of his “No Guestlist” b/w “Still Got the Feeling” 12″, San Francisco producer/DJ/Icee Hot resident Ghosts on Tape has offered up a new mix for free download. Serving as a pretty close representation of what is likely to drop during a Ghosts on Tape set during any given Icee Hot night, the 70-minute DJ set follows the Bay Area talent through the more hard-hitting ends of spacey house and techno, touching on a diverse set of tracks that includes only a few of the man’s own productions. Visionist to Drop New EP via Lit City Trax

London-born DJ/producer and Lost Codes label boss Visionist—who last year was featured in our Bubblin’ Up series—has shared details of a forthcoming EP for Lit City Trax. Following just a couple of weeks after the announcement of an EP for Leisure System, I’m Fine is the first in what is to be a two-fold installment of records for Lit City Trax. Visionist’s EP reportedly explores the five stages of grief—denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance—and is said to expand upon the grime-influenced producer’s forward-thinking sound by utilizing extensive vocal manipulation to a powerful, melancholic effect. I’m Fine is set to drop on September 3, but in the meantime, its artwork and tracklist can be found below.

The Revenge “Something More (Live Dub)”**

The Revenge has almost sold out of his limited-runRuff Jamz mix CD, a 70-minute voyage into the Glaswegian’s classically inspired house and disco stylings, as well as a heathy supply of unreleased and forthcoming tracks from the man himself. The Jesse Rennix-featuring cut “Something More” is one such effort, the “Live Dub” of which has been pulled from the mix and presented here in its seven-minute form. As the track’s length implies, this dub is no rush, taking its time to unroll an appealing set of hand-manipulated synth lines and analog FX which slip and slide around the gentle sway of the tune’s swinging drum machine. It’s a hard combination to resist and one that fits rather nicely into The Revenge’s Ruff Jamz mix, which can be streamed in full after the jump.
