Podcast 207: Dark Sky

London bass trio Dark Sky first caught our ear last year with a smattering of singles and top-notch remixes—the crew’s rework of Kelis’ “Brave” is still getting plenty of spins in the XLR8R office—and the momentum has kept building throughout 2011. Since being profiled in our Bubblin’ section, Dark Sky has dropped the “High Rise” b/w “Armour” single on Blunted Robots, and next week will see another high-profile offering, the Radius EP on 50Weapons. Although the group’s discography is still relatively short, Dark Sky has proven adept with a varied sonic palette, one that includes serene melodies, cut-up R&B snippets, thundering organic drums, and thick bass sounds underpinning the entire operation. On this exclusive mix for the XLR8R podcast series, Dark Sky manages to visit all of those corners on the musical map and more, sticking heavily to freshly released selections, including a healthy dose of the group’s own productions. We’re expecting plenty more from this youthful UK trio in the months and years to come, but right now, it’s fairly undeniable that Dark Sky has gotten off to an excellent start.

The Touch “Sermon (Chad Valley Remix)”

Stockholm tech-pop outfit The Touch recently dropped an EP via the party-centric French label Kitsune, which comes with this romantic remix from talented UK artist Chad Valley. While the original version of “Sermon” relies heavily on austere minimalism and somber delivery, producer Hugo Manuel injects his take on the song with the trademark summery haze, radio fuzz, and Balearic hooks we’ve thoroughly enjoyed coming from his own EPs for Cascine. Despite all the blissful dance-pop emanating from this remix, there still remains a shade of quiet sadness that lingers over it all, and somehow makes it that much sweeter.

Neon Indian Announces Sophomore LP

Like many of you, we thoroughly enjoyed the audio headtrip that is Psychic Chasms, the debut LP by Texan lo-fi electro-pop producer Alan Palomo (a.k.a. Neon Indian). Now, almost two years after its release, we’re alerted to the solo artist’s impending follow-up, which will be called Era Extraña (pictured above). The record, which was written and produced in Helsinki and New York by Neon Indian with Dave Fridmann on mixing/post-production duties, will drop on September 13 courtesy of a number of different imprints, including Palomo’s own Static Tongues, Mom + Pop Music, Transgressive, Pop Frenzy, and Big Nothing. An official tracklist has yet to make the rounds, but Era Extraña is said to include the songs “Polish Girl,” “Future Sick,” “The Blindside Kiss,” “Hex Girlfriend,” and a three-part instrumental suite entitled “Heart: Attack,” “Heart: Decay,” and “Heart: Release.” (via Pitchfork)

Matthewdavid “Reunited”

Forthcoming on Matthewdavid‘s Leaving Records label, Swedish Fish is a cassette release that finds Anticon co-founder Odd Nosdam splitting tape with the aforementioned noise maker. While Odd Nosdam’s material comes from a live performance the artist did at San Francisco’s Swedish American Hall some time ago, Matthewdavid’s pieces are bedroom-studio-born drifts of beautifully recycled audio. “Reunited” finishes out the whole release, and is a lush, though heavily compressed composition that flutters and churns with a radiant glow throughout its captivating seven minutes, which is perfectly illustrated in the Miko Revereza-directed video we included after the jump. We’ll be able to hear the rest of Swedish Fish when it’s made available on July 26. (via Altered Zones)

Baron Von Luxxury “Terry Richardson (Loose Shus Remix)”

The ex-SF, now LA-based producer/vocalist/bloggerBaron Von Luxxury (formerly known simply as Luxxury, pictured above) has a new LP for Manimal Vinyl still a few months away from seeing its release in September, but fellow West Coaster Loose Shus has already turned in this remix for the album’s track “Terry Richardson.” Believe it or not, this version of the tune considerably tones down the disco-pop obsession of Von Luxxury’s original, smoothing things out with some deliciously retro synths and classic drum machine work. Sure, the vocals still have quite a bit of cheese to their credit, but Von Luxxury’s whole MO is to find the “fine line dividing what is cool from what is deeply embarrassing,” and Loose Shus seems content to continue this flirtatious experiment within the ever-changing “guilty pleasure” realm set off by his Los Angeles counterpart.
