Peverelist Launches New White-Label Imprint

When it comes to the bass-music game in Bristol, it’s hard to name someone more connected than Peverelist (a.k.a. Tom Ford). He’s been running the Punch Drunk imprint since 2006, a label that remains highly respected despite its continuing position as an outpost for dubstep. Apparently though, one label isn’t quite enough for the man, as he recently launched a new endeavor called Livity Sound. The new imprint is committed to only releasing limited-edition, hand-stamped white labels, all of which are designed by fellow Bristolians Tape Echo. (The first stamp is pictured above.) Intended “strictly for the connoiseurs,” the music will be “raw,” “straight from the Bristol underground,” and “safe from the Beatport crew.” The first release, available now, is simply titled “Livity Sound 001.” It’s a split 12″ from Peverelist and Kowton, and offers two tracks which they claim are “far from dancefloor fodder” and sound like “forgotten gem[s] from the Skull Disco archives.” We’re guessing it won’t last long.

Modeselektor’s 50Weapons Imprint to Release Singles Compilation

After years of running the imprint as an unofficial white label series, bass-loving German duo Modeselektor has spent the past year bringing its 50Weapons label into the light, impressively doing so without sacrificing the quality of its output. Recent months have seen releases from the likes of Bok Bok, Cosmin TRG, Benjamin Damage & Doc Daneeka, and FaltyDL. Previously available only as singles, on July 15 the best of the bunch will be made available as part of a new compilation album, 50 Weapons of Choice #10-19. The 10-track release will also feature contributions from Anstam, Phon.o, and HumanLeft. The artwork is above and the complete tracklisting is below.

01 Benjamin Damage & Doc Daneeka “Creeper”
02 Phon.o “IL62”
03 Benjamin Damage “Zeppelin”
04 Cosmin TRG “Izolat”
05 Anstam “Albert”
06 Modeselektor “Art & Cash – Bok Bok Remix”
07 Falty DL “Large Flash”
08 HumanLeft “Arnaud & Bernard”

Dryman Sound & Side9000 “Raindance (Trusty Remix)”

On his hot-footed remix of “Raindance,” a recently released collaboration by Czech producers Dryman Sound & Side9000, Prague-based tunesmith Trusty works the bubbly original track into a supercharged club tune with many faces. A strong dubstep vibe kicks things off, thanks to some dubby sound effects and a slow-grooving riddim. Next comes the classic synth stabs and skittering percussion, all of which scream old-school rave. And squeezed in between those predominate styles is an ominous, distorted bass drop that eventually takes over the whole production. Despite the many genres at work, “Raindance (Trusty Remix)” never comes off as disjointed or incongruous during its five minutes of heavy dancefloor sounds. You can preview the rest of Dryman Sound & Side9000’s Raindance EP here.

Wiley to Release New EP Via Big Dada

We haven’t even seen the official release of his latest LP, 100% Publishing, and the enigmatic/prolific grime MC Wiley is already prepping another EP, which will be made available courtesy of Big Dada. According to FACT, the record currently bears the awkward title Evolve or Be Extinct, and will feature a collaboration with Mad Decent boss Diplo, as well as “a ‘shockingly frank and funny’ track titled ‘Weirdo,’ and ‘several more gems that Wiley is currently polishing’.” Look for Wiley’s new EP some time late this summer.

Bubblin’ Up: Jonwayne

Who:Jonwayne
Where: La Habra, CA

Part of a crew that’s being touted as the second generation of Low End Theory, 20-year-old Jonwayne initially came up as a rapper, but has more recently been touted for his beatmaking prowess, a craft honed through countless hours on FruityLoops and his SP-404 sampler. Skeptical types may raise an eyebrow at his chosen artist moniker, but his legal name is actually Jonathan Wayne, so no cutesy hipster shenanigans are at work here. Known for his often-dark and videogame-inspired beats, Wayne recently released the Bowser album via Daddy Kev’s Alpha Pup label.

Pictureplane “Post Physical”

Don’t get us wrong. We’re big fans of Denver’s Travis Egedy and his fine work as Pictureplane. We’re very excited for his new album, Thee Physical, which comes out on July 19. But the one-time emo fanboys on the XLR8R staff—who shall remain nameless, we have to maintain at least a few cool points here—can’t get over how much the vocals on “Post Physical” sound like those of post-hardcore demigod Blair Shehan of Knapsack and The Jealous Sound. Are we alone here? Listen to this or this and tell us that we’re crazy. Anyways, people that don’t care about decade-old emo might want to know that Pictureplane originally gave away “Post Physical” yesterday as a free download through his SoundCloud. However, the free downloads ran out in about five minutes, so we’ve gone ahead and re-posted the track here for the masses. Now, everyone can enjoy its washy, rough-edged synths, jungle-referencing beat, catchy melodies, and late-’90s/early-’00s emo vocal stylings. We’re kidding. Sort of.

Jon Convex Convexations EP

2011 has been quite the year for Instra:mental. Not only has the duo’s Resolution 653 album been praised as one of the year’s best, but the impressive string of solo singles from Boddika has made him one of 2011’s most sought-after producers. While the accolades are undoubtedly appreciated, it has created a pretty tall order for Instra:mental’s other half, Jon Convex (a.k.a. Damon Kirkham), who is now stepping out on his own with this solo EP on Martyn’s 3024 imprint.

Those familiar with the recent output of Instra:mental and Boddika won’t find anything particularly surprising on the Convexations EP. The reverence for 808 drum sounds is still present, as is the tendency toward dark, driving beats and crunchy synths that recall vintage electro. The title track kicks off the EP with a brawny low-end and robotic, angular melodies; it’s definitely the sort of tune that can keep a sweaty dancefloor moving. “Falling Again,” on the other hand, is the kind of track that can take a party up a notch. Its stuttery vocal, off-kilter drum pattern, and bouncy bassline combine to create a souped-up, 2-step-leaning production with a joyous spirit at its center. The digital-only “Order into Chaos” rounds out the release, with Convex once again delving into thick, menacing electro.

The Convexations EP may not shine quite as brightly as Resolution 653 or Boddika’s collective solo work, but it’s a more than capable effort. With additional Jon Convex singles on the way via Naked Lunch and NonPlus+, his stature is sure to rise in the months ahead.

How to Dress Well to Release New EP; Hear it Now

The man behind one of last year’s most soulful LPs, the strangely gorgeous Love Remains, Tom Krell (a.k.a. How to Dress Well) will release a new EP called Just Once (pictured above) on July 21 via the Yours Truly-run imprint Love Letters Ink. The four-track 10″ features ‘orchestral versions’ of three songs from Krell’s aforementioned album, as well as the brand-new heartstring tugger “Suicide Dream 3,” and will come with a handwritten letter from the artist himself. You can pre-order your copy of the vinyl, download the MP3s, and find more information on the whole release here. Below, you can stream the music, and watch a video about the making of How to Dress Well’s EP. (via Gorilla vs. Bear)

Rogerseventytwo “You Take Me Higher (Brenmar Re-Vision feat. China)”

We’re not going to lie. The original version of Rogerseventytwo‘s “Take Me Higher” basically overloads our “over the top” meter and makes us sympathize—just a bit, of course—with all the people chanting “disco sucks” and gathering en masse to burn records in the late ’70s. All that aside, the folks at Fool’s Gold were smart enough to enlist one of our favorites for remix duty—R&B-loving NYC producer Brenmar. Just ahead of the release of his new Tasting (Let Me Know) EP on Grizzly next week, he’s reformulated “Take Me Higher” into something much more palatable. Most importantly, he’s chopped up the vocals into something that resembles 1999 a lot more than 1979, and also dropped the disco instrumentation in favor of snappy drums and a warbling bassline. There’s still a hint of cheese left in there, but just enough to coax some ladies onto the dancefloor. The entire “You Take Me Higher” release is available now at Beatport. (via FADER)
