Wise Blood “2 the Bitter End (K-Ci & Jo Jo Rework)”

At this point in the game, you can pretty much do whatever you want. We mean at least two things by that. One: As long as you’re far enough off most of the world’s radar, any sample you nab is pretty much fair game, and no one will give you any guff about it. Two: You can treat those samples in any way you like, and there will most likely be some sub-group of music lovers that’ll be into it. Case in point: this rework of ’90s R&B duo K-Ci & Jo Jo’s “Tell Me it’s Real” by hard-to-pin-down bedroom producer Wise Blood. The tunesmith chops a couple hooks from the original song, pitch-shifts some parts, adds a sparse beat and a slow-moving synth melody, goes nuts on the sampler, and voila!—song. Don’t get us wrong, we’re totally digging “2 the Bitter End,” which is taken from a free EP curated by the Heart Music Group. Wise Blood has definitely made something fresh and original out of his arsenal of soulful samples. It’s just still a bit crazy that this is what comprises a lot of music these days. It makes us wonder what’s next on the horizon.

Blonde Redhead “Here Sometimes (Pantha du Prince Remix)”

Blonde Redhead is one of those groups that has never received a lot of ink the the pages of XLR8R, but we’ve often enjoyed the band’s quirky art-pop over the years. Last Friday, the trio set off on a lengthy tour with Pantha du Prince (pictured above), and to celebrate, the German techno wiz has delivered this lengthy remix of Blonde Redhead’s “Here Sometimes,” the original of which appears on the NYC outfit’s most recent album, Penny Sparkle. As with many Pantha du Prince efforts, there’s nothing over-the-top happening here, just a steady techno pulse, some ghostly melodic whispers, plenty of bells, and a slow build as a wondrous dancefloor cut blossoms over the course of 10-plus minutes. White Mountains “Bells”

New Hampshire-based producer and composer Peter James (a.k.a. White Mountains) has supplied us with this moody, blissful track from his upcoming LP, Wilderness. Slow-moving, angelic pads and arps create dense layers of sound which nonetheless allow the scattered percussion and tiny electro drums to peek through during the six-minute track. If James’ name for the project and LP are any inclination, much of his inspiration is pulled from the natural world, perhaps not the sounds actually found in nature, but the feeling of satisfaction and calm one can get from the solitude of being alone in a forest or on top of a mountain. So regardless of where you’re listening to the track, it might be worth trying to close your eyes and seeing if “Bells” can help you reach that feeling without having to, you know, go outside.

Serengeti & Polyphonic to Release New EP on Anticon

We haven’t heard much from Chicago duo Serengeti & Polyphonic since their album Terradactyl dropped back in 2009. Now, Anticon has announced a new EP from the leftfield hip-hoppers with six new tracks and six remixes from the Anticon camp. The new tracks on Bells & Floating World find Serengeti delivering his brand of introspective stream-of-consciousness raps over Polyphonic’s frantic, swirling productions, followed by six remixes of songs off their previous album from Why?, Jel, Bracken, Epstein Y El Conjunto, Son Lux, and Greetings from Tuskan. Bells & Floating World will be available digitally from Anticon on November 16. Check out the track “Megazoo” and full tracklist below.

Video Premiere: Ghostpoet’s “Cash and Carry Me”

Signed to Gilles Petereson’s Brownswood label, London-based wordsmith Ghostpoet will deliver his first full-length record, Peanut Butter Blues & Melancholy Jam, through that imprint come February 7, 2011. The first single to be heard from that record is the poignant “Cash and Carry Me,” the video for which we’re premiering today. The MC’s slurred rasp is delivered with a lackadaisical fervor, sounding at times like a mix between Mos Def’s halfhearted croon and Tunde Adebimpe on quaaludes, but it’s an endearing sound that fits the track’s sullen melodies, too. The video itself is equally dark and flashy. Close ups of Ghostpoet rhyming in the shadows are joined by slick computer graphics, a few choice props, and simple-but-effective lighting effects—allowing the focus to remain mostly on his excellent tune.

Listen to Pantha du Prince Talk Contact Microphones, ThinkPads, and Transcendentalism at Decibel

German minimalist Pantha du Prince helped make our first night at Seattle’s Decibel 2010 one to remember with his headlining set of lush and enriching ambient techno. But what made the experience truly rewarding was our chance to actually sit down and talk with the producer, born Hendrik Weber, before his performance. In the green room of Neumos, amidst the chatter of a festival nearly underway, Weber spoke with us in detail about the recording of his earthy dance-music epic, this year’s Black Noise, how he accidentally came across the writing of Henry David Thoreau, and why you might see him banging on a table or pint glass at his next live show.

Video Premiere: Azari & III’s Glossy “Into the Night”

Toronto’s brilliant house combo Azari & III follow their year’s already lengthy string of remixes, originals, and the recent Indigo EP with another brand-new tune, the title track from the forthcoming Into The Night EP (released on November 22 via Scion A/V). Here, the deep anthem is paired with some shadowy footage of a leggy woman writhing atop a platform and aimlessly walking about in the dark—receiving an occasional grope, caress, or ominous leer from the men of Azari & III. It’s no high concept, but the quality of the striking footage and the attention given to the set, costumes, and other pre-production details ideally match the pristine sonics of “Into the Night”‘s clubby grooves. And that’s something we’d much rather watch than another lazy rehash of found footage chopped up and called a music video. Kudos to Scion, Azari & III, and director thirty9steps for kicking the bar back up a notch.

DJ QNess Mixes Comp of South African House Music

In case you weren’t hip to the recent wave of South African-style house music, commonly referred to as Township Funk, that’s been making its way throughout the clubs and parties of the dance music community the world over, there is a new compilation to get you up to speed. London’s New State Music has gotten one of South Africa’s top DJs, DJ QNess, to mix a 20-song compilation of what is pretty much a greatest-hits collection from the genre’s recent history. Some standouts include DJ Storm’s “Run Against the Wind,” Mzo Bullet’s “Casablanca,” and the inescapable anthem, “Township Funk,” from Mujava. A player with a few samples from the mix and the full tracklist can be found below. Township Funk is available now from New State Music.

Mikix the Cat “Keep on Wondering”

One of the world’s many patrons of bass-heavy dance music, Parisian producer Mikix the Cat has a new EP coming soon thanks to his low-frequency-loving friends at NY’s Trouble & Bass label. The Girls Keep on Wondering EP will drop on November 2, but we’ve got a bit of a preview before that, in the form of the tasteful banger “Keep on Wondering.” Mikix’s tune is the second of four selections on his as-yet-unreleased EP, and offers enough ’90s synth stabs, heavy dancefloor rhythms, vibrating sub tones, sampled vocal hooks, and epic breakdowns/drops to stand alone as a quality single. We’re not sure what else his Wondering EP will offer selectors and listeners of energetic dance music once it’s out, but we’re happy enough to have “Keep on Wondering” taking up a handful of minutes in our peak-hour DJ sets until then.

Propellerhead Release New Drum Sample Bank

Software developers and makers of Reason, Propellerhead, have announced a collection of high-quality drum samples for use with their newest program, Record. The new sample bank, dubbed Record Drum Takes Vol. 1-3, features a host of studio session drummers playing a variety of music styles from “Alt Rock” to “Folk Rock” to “Indie,” complete with designated intro, verse, chorus, bridge, and breakdown sections broken up into multi-track format within the Record program. Although the drums are intended to aid those hoping to make pop and rock, we’re sure some of you will be able to find ways of using these for less, shall we say, straightforward purposes. Each of the three volumes goes for $29 and is available, along with additional info, at the Drum Takes website.
