Eliot Lipp and Leo 123 Ready New Dark Party EP

Before the duo’s long-awaited album, Light Years, is released in early-September, Eliot Lipp and Leo 123 (a.k.a. Dark Party) will drop their Patrol Patrol EP tomorrow, June 22. Released via Old Tacoma, the forthcoming EP features two original songs, “Patrol Patrol” and “Status,” along with a remix of each track. Brooklyn’s Mux Mool handles the rework of “Patrol Patrol,” and fellow NY-resident Michna is updating “Status” (get it?!). Another remix EP will is on its way for August, so keep your eyes peeled for that, and check out the Patrol Patrol EP’s artwork below.

Pink Priest “Tell Me Something Awesome Before I Go to Sleep (Balam Acab Remix)”

Recently featured Bubblin’ artist Balam Acab (pictured above) is a little less than two months from dropping his debut EP, See Birds, on the brand-new, 20 Jazz Funk Greats-affiliated Tri Angle label. Before we start going ga-ga over the shadowy tunes to be heard on that release, we’re going to get lost in the hypnotic textures of producer Alec Koone’s remix of this Pink Priest track, “Tell Me Something Awesome Before I Go to Sleep.” Slowly, Acab’s remix grows in intensity—if you can call it that—with synth and vocal loops climbing up to the forefront, but quickly dissipating soon after. It’s reminiscent of the trademark interludes scattered throughout Boards of Canada’s albums, but presented instead as a fully realized song and not the middle-place between tracks.

The See Birds EP is out on 12″ and digital formats August 16.

Underground Resistance’s Mike Banks and Jeff Mills to Share ‘Something’ this Saturday

Two members of the veteran Detroit techno collective Underground Resistance have come together on a new project, which will be exhibited this Saturday, June 19 at 10 Critics in Detroit. Entitled Something in the Sky, the show is an audio/visual performance dreamt up by Jeff Mills (pictured above) based around the sights, sounds, and emotions surrounding the idea of UFO encounters. A partner of Mills in the UR crew, Mike Banks, caught wind of the upcoming show, and opted to add himself to the bill with a special performance of his own, introducing the four-hour exhibition. From the press release, “Something in the Sky…explores the extraordinary aspects and perspective of unidentified sightings in the Detroit Metro area, the United States, and around the world, and is about the human reaction to such occurrences. It displays our subconscious feelings as they emerge and come out into the light by such encounter.” Far out, huh? Limited presale tickets and more detailed info on the event is available here.

DD/MM/YYYY and FaltyDL Kick off NXNE Fest

Toronto is undoubtedly abuzz this week, and while a good portion of that buzz can be attributed to its many diverse neighbo(u)rhoods flaunting their national pride during World Cup, there’s much to be said for the city’s NXNE festival, which takes over 50 venues for seven days, with music, film, and all sorts of music-related goings on.

First, the quick bummer news: Recent XLR8R.com heat-bringer Dominique Young Unique—we found out as we tried to schedule an interview with her—had to pull out of the proceedings after losing her voice nights before.

DD/MM/YYYY

Okay, now onto the good stuff: Aside from amazing weather, a sweet serving of Smoke’s poutine, and a John Doe hotel-elevator run-in, Thursday’s highlights for us would definitely include Toronto faves DD/MM/YYYY , who ripped through a 35-minute set at The Garrison. All angular synth, guitar, and drum noise from five youngsters taking a page from the book of Don Caballero and Lightning Bolt, it was loud, hot, and sticky enough to send us up the street for a cold one at The Communist’s Daughter, a cozy Little Portugal hole in the wall frequented by the likes of Metric and Broken Social Scene, before heading across the way to try (unsuccessfully) to catch a secret set by—whatdya know—Broken Social Scene.

FaltyDL

The city granted NXNE a special drink-’til-4 a.m. license, so a 2 a.m. set by XLR8R regular FaltyDL at The Drake Underground seemed a proper end to the night (note to other cities: 4 a.m. last calls are a good idea during rock fests). To know Drew “FaltyDL” Lustman is to know that you never know what to expect from one of his club sets—he can get a crowd grooving in fewer 16 bars, or he can intentionally clear a lame-ass dancefloor with an intense jungle assault. Last night he got off on the good foot, with a DJ Nate juke track kicking off his set, and keeping the smallish crowd sufficiently pumped til the wee hours.

Check back here Monday for a full weekend-long wrap-up from Toronto.

8Bitch “G41 (Rustie Remix)”

Rustie‘s remix of “G41,” the new single by UK producer 8Bitch, starts off with very little fanfare. A booming kick and loud-cracking snare work out a beat over some slowly oscillating sound effects and subtle synth tones for almost a minute before the initial bass synth chimes in. It all paves the way for the flourish of crystalline melodies and rhythmic space-noise elements to take the spotlight moments later. You couldn’t really call this club-ready, even if the beat does knock, and there’s really no hook to hum along to. Still, Rustie (pictured above) keeps his remix interesting by subverting tendencies to make the track overtly accessible, and instead relying on his penchant for making uniquely danceable, wonky tunes.

Cassettes Won’t Listen Introduces Animal Collective to Cannibal Ox on New Mixtape

First The Grey Album, then Girl Talk, and now this. Bi-coastal producer Jason Drake (a.k.a. Cassettes Won’t Listen) prepared this meeting of seemingly disparate musical entities between studio sessions for his forthcoming new full-length album, and is now unleashing Animal Ox, a meeting of Animal Collective and Cannibal Ox. Whether this is a “hipster’s wet dream” or not, the basis for the idea has interesting roots. To paraphrase the press release, Cannibal Ox’s 2001 album, The Cold Vein, was a highly influential release that launched both El-P’s group and label into the underground hip-hop spotlight when it came out. Hundreds of miles away at the same time, Animal Collective came together and started slowly climbing the ladder to indie stardom. Animal Ox joins the genre-defying nature of Animal Collective’s discography with Cannibal Ox’s singular opus in what Cassettes Won’t Listen hopes is a respectful and interesting way—he’s essentially paying homage to some of indie music’s most unparalleled icons. Check out the album’s artwork and tracklist below, and download the whole thing for free here.

Brackles to Release Debut Mix Album

No matter what title is currently most popular for his music (future-garage, post-dubstep, whatever-you-call-it), UK tune maker and Blunted Robots co-owner Brackles is constantly at work making and releasing those kind of forward-thinking jams we’ve all come to crave. Recently, the multi-tasking DJ/producer added another bit of work to his already crowded schedule: crafting the first installment of the Songs For Endless Cities mix series for new !K7-affiliated label Cool in the Pool. The new DJ set is Brackles first mix album, and is said to be “a slice of Brackles after hours and out of hours, with the afterglow still burning, maybe the rhythms still bumping, but with the freedom to rove around a bit, enjoying and exploring sound without always having to turn back to the dancefloor.” Nearly every track in the bass-heavy mix comes from a producer of high-regard, including Flying Lotus, Cooly G, Deadboy, Zomby, Kyle Hall, and a brand-new, exclusive track from Brackles himself. Songs For Endless Cities Volume 1: Brackles is out August 31. Check out the full tracklist and cover art below, and get incoming info about the release here.

Alexis “Lonely Sea”

Oakland-based vocalist Alexis Blair Penney (or just Alexis) teamed up with Nick Weiss of Bubblin’ production duo Teengirl Fantasy for this classically minded house ballad. “Lonely Sea” focuses on a few strong points: a catchy synth loop, a bulbous bass rhythm, a simple disco-house beat, and an intimate vocal performance—all filtered through ’90s-dance sensibilities. It’s a welcoming and immediately lovable tune, so much so that once its three minutes are up, you’re likely to find yourself scrolling the web in hopes of finding the extended mix.
