Premiere: Hear a Low-Slung House Cut From Mato

Later this week, Mato will debut on Omni A.M.’s Euphoria Records with his latest EP, Moving In.

From the late ’90s through the early ’00s, Euphoria Records established itself as a force in the tech house and minimal worlds, releasing music from the likes of Mark Ambrose, Terry Francis, Casey Hogan, and label bosses Omni A.M. to great acclaim. This week, the label returns with its first solo artist release since Freaky Chakra’s 2003 It’s Time EP, presenting three new tracks from Maltese artist Mato.

Nodding to the early days of tech house and minimal, Moving In is a raw and gritty collection of groovy club jams. From “Gozo Carnival,” a driving bass-heavy outing, to the swinging minimal house of “Euphoria Jamz” and the low-slung grooves of “Where’s the Chutney?,” Moving In is a welcome addition to Euphoria’s already stellar catalog.

You can pre-order Moving In here, with “Where’s The Chutney?” streaming in full via the player below.

Le Le “Die When I’m Done”

Champagne-based Le Le is made up of Piet Parra, Serge Faberyayo, and recent Dekmantel signee Rimer London. Their latest EP will land on April 12 via Amsterdam-based label Magnetron Music, home to Fatima Yamaha.

The French trio released their debut album, Flage, in March 2008, and it entered into the Dutch national charts in the top 30. Its follow-up, Marble, surfaced in 2009, also on Magnetron Music, before Gomma released a compilation of their work in 2010 under the title of Le Classics. Their second and third albums arrived in 2012 and 2015 respectively and now they’re set for a new EP, their first in three years.

We’re told that it sees them “going full Moroder,” bringing in arpeggiated melodies, muted Italo funk with yacht-disco vibes, all wrapped up in an ’80s sheen overcoating, and delivered with deadpan detail.”

In advance of the April 12 release, you can download “Die When I’m Done” in full via the player below, or here for EU readers due to temporary GDPR restrictions.

Dawn of Midi’s Qasim Naqvi Preps Erased Tapes Album Debut

Photo: Smriti Keshari

Pakistani-American composer Qasim Naqvi will release his debut album via Erased Tapes on May 3, titled Teenages.

The six-track album is Naqvi’s first non-soundtrack release, having previously established himself as a renowned composer for dance, theatre, film, and installation-based art. He’s also known for his role as drummer in lauded trio Dawn of Midi.

Navqvi created the entire album on an analog modular synthesizer, a voltage-controlled sound generating system comprised of multiple modules. He built the synth over the course of two years and amassed a collection of works for this album.

We’re told that the release captures the sound of electronics living, breathing, and mutating of their own accord—almost autonomously—with only subtle, sparing but “perfectly-judged and masterful guidance,” the label explains.

This is very much an experiential album for me because it was borne out of my direct experience of learning the instrument. And as the synthesizer grew over time with more components, it matured. At times I felt like it was even rebelling against my instructions or surprising me with what felt like its own choices.

When everything was finished and I was thinking about track titles, this idea of artificial intelligence came into my head; a machine that reacts to your impulses and is capable of giving you something different from what you ask, and even defying you. It felt like different stages of growth and adolescence, and that lead to the album title, ‘Teenages’.” — Qasim Naqvi

Caterina Barbieri will debut on Editions Mego with Ecstatic Computation in May.

Ecstatic Computation is the Italian composer’s third album, following 2017’s Patterns of Consciousness via ImportantOver six tracks, Barbieri explores both machine and human intelligence, memory and perception, inducing ecstasy and trance through complex, minimalistic, and psychedelic synth arpeggios. We’re told that the fast permutation of patterns creates a state where time stands still whilst simultaneously being in motion.

Vocals on track four are performed by Annie Gårlid and Evelyn Saylor.

Vienna’s Editions Mego is relentlessly releasing some of the best experimental music around. The label has released works by Christian Fennesz, Mika Vainio, Klara Lewis, Russell Haswell, and more.

Beloved Exile is Moore’s first non-soundtrack album in five years and his first for Temporary Residence. It follows 2013’s Pangaea Ultima (Spectrum Spools) and Positronic Neural Pathways (VCO Records), and draws influence from vintage ambient synth libraries, new age/spiritual music, and menacing horror films. Los Angeles Composer Zachary Paul Details Debut Album via Touch

Los Angeles-based violinist and composer Zachary Paul has announced the release of A Meditation on Discord, scheduled to launch April 12 on CD and digital formats with London’s Touch. We’re told to expect a “formidable debut from one of LA’s rising voices in experimental music.”

A Meditation on Discord compiles two live recordings from 2018 and a short film score. Opener “Premonition (3:30PM Lake Perris)” was recorded on the first day of Desert Daze Music Festival. The track, complex in microtones and emotionally immersive as a whole, is split into two parts designated as “Rays” and “Clouds,” and stretches past the 30-minute mark. “Slow Ascent (9:30PM Downtown)” was recorded at Human Resources, Los Angeles in February 2018 for an event celebrating the release of Yann Novak’s sophomore album. Finally,  “A Person With Feelings” is the original score for the Tanner Smith short film of the same name.

Anticon Co-Founder Odd Nosdam Lines Up New Album via Alien Transistor

Anticon co-founder Odd Nosdam, real name David P. Madson, has announced the release of his next full-length album, Mirrors

Scheduled to land on April 12 on Alien Transistor, the eight-track release follows drone and ambient albums Music For Raising (Baro Records, 2016) and LIF (Sound In Silence, 2017), and intersects back to the US artist’s rhythm-heavy work that’s defined most of his career.

Madson recorded the LP at his studio in Berkeley, California over the course of three years, 2015 through 2018, primarily by sampling found sounds sourced from rare and private press vinyl.

We’re told to expect a “treasure trove of unique aural gems, each nestled in atmospheric textures that swirl like a cloud of dust just blown off of some once-overlooked heirloom.”

German label Alien Transistor was founded in 2003 by Markus and Micha Acher.
