Silent-One “Snakes”

Silent-One‘s Intimate Silence will return on January 22 with a six-track VA, featuring cuts from Pär Grindvik, Thomas Hessler, PVNV, Glos, and, of course, Silent-One himself.

Hessler’s “Pearl” opens the release with warm, rippling arpeggios and affecting pads, followed by Kas:st’s angelic “Are We Alone In The Universe” and label head Silent-One’s “Snakes,” an ominous slice of thick unsettling ambience. On the back half, Pär Grindvik delivers a stuttered beat-driven cut full of washed-out synth lines, while PVNV and Glos opt for hypnotic and emotive harmonics and rounding out a top-quality compilation.

In support of the release, which can be pre-ordered here, Silent-One has offered up “Snakes” as one of today’s XLR8R download, available via WeTransfer below.

Influences 13: Finlay Shakespeare

Finlay Shakespeare is up next on Editions Mego with Domestic Economy, an 11-track album and a debut under his birth name. All previous releases have come as Future Image on Future Image Records; you’ll find four EPs in total, broadly encompassing glitch, IDM, acid, and ambient. The latest of these, PACh ArcEL, surfaced in 2008, after which Shakespeare’s focus was drawn to Future Sound Systems, an independent musical device manufacturer. Domestic Economy is the Bristol-based artist’s first new music in over a decade.

There isn’t much else to be said about Shakespeare, barring that the dropping of his alias appears to be emblematic of a swift change in sonic direction. Domestic Economy, out February 11, is a strong dose of electronic pop, with sharp beats and Shakespeare’s own ecstatic vocals. It’s a highly original piece of experimental work; and with the aim of giving it some context, Shakespeare compiled a mix of some of the records that inspired him to work on it. You’ll find the tracklist below, alongside the WeTransfer button for the download.

“Being asked to put a mix together is always a nice thing, though can easily place you halfway between the arrogance and the fear of pushing your musical taste upon unsuspecting ears. More arrogantly, the tracks below are all fantastic. There are some usual suspects in this mix, as well as some perhaps unexpected choices, mostly recorded from vinyl then cut together digitally. There’s a good bunch of vinyl exclusive cuts here too, not found on yer typical Spotify jaunt, and also a Severed Heads edit I made for this. Listen out for stuff played backwards—thanks Reloop. More fearfully, if you like these, there’s a chance you might like what I do. Who knows? Get up and dance off the cold, Mark Allaway is king here.” — Finlay Shakespeare

Next month, Hypah will launch his new label, Eternal Damnation, with a five-track EP from Kwartz titled Distorted Reality.

Kwartz’ latest, which follows recent outings on Clergy, Silex Device, and Pole Group Recordings, features two pulverizing originals and a set of remixes from VSK, Endlec, and label head, Hypah. Full of cavernous, rolling grooves and searing sound design, it’s no wonder the EP is already picking up heavy support from some of techno’s most in-demand artists, including Perc, Paula Temple, Bas Mooy, Ghost in the machine, Amotik, Rebekah, Eomac, Slam, Reflec, Takaaki Itoh, and JK Flesh, among others.

Distorted Reality is set to drop on vinyl on January 18, with the digital following on February 1. Ahead of those drops, Hypah has offered up a full stream of Kwartz’ “Distorted Reality Part Two,” a slice of scuffed-up psychedelic techno, available via the player below.

You can pre-order the release here, with the tracklisting and stream below.

VC118A Album Next on Delsin Records

Electro producer Samuel van Dijk will mark a decade since his debut release with a third artist album, Inside, under his VC118A alias. It also marks his first original work on Delsin having released on Frustrated Funk, Radio Matrix, and Tabernacle before now.

We’re told that the album dives deep into the sonic narrative of VC118A and mixes up his unique sounds with evocative musical imagery as well as obscure computer game samples, field recordings, and a wealth of hardware tools. It was written in a transitional period between an underground bunker in Tampere and Helsinki in Finland, inspired by virtual reality and imagined water worlds.

VC118A is also known as Mohlao and Multicast Dynamics.

The album follows last year’s BNJMN LP on the Dutch label.

MADMADMAD “Hot Disco”

London-via-France dance-punk-funk trio MADMADMAD will release a self-titled debut album, out on March 22 via S.T.A.C Records

The genesis for the record came when the trio of Leon, Kevin, and Benji—all originally from the same part of France— found themselves in a council estate flat-cum-homemade recording studio in Tottenham. “It’s a mad man’s house,” say the group. “Musical instruments everywhere—totally chaotic. Our passion for music has somehow alienated us. We record these dark loopy jams and it’s liberating.”

We’re told that the LP sits in a unique position of sounding like a rare 1978 Discogs find of some long forgotten cult post-punk band from New York but with a potency and freshness that comes from the clear sense of energy and synergy the band feel from modern times.

In support of the album, out in March, you can download “Hot Disco” in full via the WeTransfer button below, or here for EU readers due to temporary GDPR restrictions.

Craven Faults Announces New EP With Immersive Video Single

Next month, Craven Faults will return with his latest EP, Springhead Works.

Springhead Works is the follow up to 2017’s Netherfield Works, presenting two more side-long masterful synth explorations inspired by the Yorkshire Moors. Craven Faults music provides a noirish, introspective ride through Farfisa drones and tape-hiss textures; it’s meditative, patient music for fans of Pye Corner Audio, Demdike Stare, and James Holden.

With the announcement, Craven Faults has shared the video—produced by James Islip—for a-side cut, “Intakes,” a stunning piece of synth music. You can watch the video in full below, with the record available for pre-order here.

Premiere: Hear a Deep and Twisted Electro Cut From Alpha 606

From The Dark Volume 3, the latest compilation from Cultivated Electronics, will drop on January 14.

Following volumes one and two, both of which dropped last year, the new compilation finds Cultivated Electronics boss Sync 24 bringing together some of the best names in electro for a world-class eight-track release. Morphology’s ominous opener “Sentinel” sets the tone for the release, before rolling into two wigged-out sci-fi cuts from Alpha 606 and Carl Finlow. SC-164 delivers a tense and paranoid cut on the back end of the release, before Animalistic Beliefs closes things out in style with a funk-filled aquatic roller.

In support of the release, Cultivated Electronics has offered up a full stream of Alpha 606’s “Zombie King,” available via the player below.

Jozef Van Wissem & Jim Jarmusch Announce New Collaborative LP for Sacred Bones

Experimental lute player Jozef Van Wissem and acclaimed film director and musician Jim Jarmusch will release a new collaborative LP for Sacred Bones.

Van Wissem and Jarmusch have a working relationship that dates back to 2006, when they ran into each other on the street in New York City and quickly struck up a friendship. Van Wissem contributed to the soundtrack for Jarmusch’s 2013 movie Only Lovers Left Alive, and the two have collaborated on three previous studio albums—Apokatastasis, Concerning the Entrance Into Eternity, and The Mystery of Heaven

An Attempt to Draw Aside the Veil is their second release as a duo for Sacred Bones Records, following The Mystery of Heaven, and its narrative picks up where that album left off.

Like The Mystery of Heaven, An Attempt to Draw Aside the Veil delves into the theology of William Blake and Emanuel Swedenborg, this time also exploring the work of Russian occultist and philosopher Helena Blavatsky. The album is mostly instrumental, so the dialogue between the esoteric thinkers who inspired it and Van Wissem and Jarmusch is expressed primarily in the song titles—fittingly arcane phrases like “Concerning the White Horse,” “The Two Paths,” “When the Sun Rises Do You Not See A Round Disc of Fire.”

Musically, we’re told that the album finds much of its power in minimalism. Van Wissem’s lute traces the outlines of subdued electronics and ominous guitar drones laid down by Jarmusch. It’s a subtle album, and “repeat listens reveal vast depths in its dark corners,” we’re told.

02. Dark Matter

03. The Unclouded Day
