Ex Mykah Shares an Unnerving Video About Drug Addiction

Late last year, Ex Mykah—the avant-pop project of Colombian/Cuban-American artist Bryan Senti—released his debut album, 16,17, on Kowloon Records

Produced with Justin Moshkevich and John Hull, the album was directly inspired by various social themes in American society today, touching on everything from drug abuse to social class, politics, and religion via warped hip-hop influenced outings and affecting left-field pop.

Following the release of the album, Ex Mykah has shared the haunting and unnerving video for album cut “Interventions,” a track about how his country is in the throes of drug addiction, as he explains:

“Many friends and idols have passed over the years do to various forms of addiction and it took me a while to figure out a way to discuss that in a song. It finally dawned on me that trapping this kind of lyrical message in a song that could be played in a club where one does such things was the most eloquent way to go. That said, musically the track is inspired by personal psychedelic trips and pulls from darkwave and hip-hop.”

His latest follows recent outings on UntilMyHeartStops, Telegraph, and MiniBar with four confounding house cuts of a singular personality. Opening with “Jokers & Clowns,” a dubby slice of sci-fi jazz, the EP flows through the galloping oddball tune “Left & Right” and a broken-beat version of “Jokers & Clowns” before finishing with the subtle and affecting “Charm Offensive,” rounding out yet another standout EP.

In support of the EP, Ellis has offered up “Left & Right” as today’s XLR8R download, available via WeTransfer below. You can pre-order the EP here.

Podcast 575: Julian Perez

Spanish artist Julian Perez began DJing around the age of 16, particularly influenced by the old-school sounds of Detroit, Chicago, and the United Kingdom. A promising reputation around his home town of Valencia eventually saw him relocate to Ibiza, a temporary base from which he’s since ventured far and wide, performing regularly across North and South America and Europe, recognized for a fresh and elegant style. He’s currently on tour in Australia.

Perez released his first record in 2010 and this inspired him to launch Fathers & Sons Productions, a vinyl-only label founded with a friend in 2012. Releases, think groovy techno and house, came from Perez and those around him, the foundations for great success: to date, every release has sold out in the first days of sales, a testament to Perez’ impeccable taste in music and skills in spotting new and interesting artists. More recently, Perez has launched Girada Unlimited, a vinyl-only label and production project already garnering much support. As Girada Unlimited, Perez recently debuted on Cure Music with Where’s Daff?, a two-track EP of edits, and one of the standout releases of 2018.

Perez’ podcast is reflective of such a stellar reputation. Full of deep sounds, breaks, flying pads, and dreamy melodies, it’s a cerebral and contemplative mix with a subtle groove from beginning to end. It was recorded on Perez’ return from Japan, and is a little bit more “moody” than you’d expect from him. Nonetheless, with its engaging selections and seamless mixing, it’s a mix you’ll keep coming back to. Grab it now via the WeTransfer button below.

What have you been up to recently?

I’ve been spending some quality family time, working on the last touches of my upcoming music projects and playing really fun gigs. I have to say, the last three months were very thrilling and productive.

How was 2018 for you, on reflection?

Another hectic year for the books. A year of changes for me in many ways. Change is what makes us grow and we have to get the best out of them in order to improve. I’m extremely grateful for what I’ve achieved until now and how honest my decisions have been made. Being far from what’s politically correct ain’t always good for business, people say. Time flies, the music scene is constantly evolving, and you want to be rolling with it on your own way. So let’s keep moving forward!

When and where was this mix recorded?

It was recorded in my studio, on a cozy night in Autumn coming into winter.

I was right back from my last tour in Japan. My mind was still there after listening to several hundreds of records that week in different stores around the country. I’m pretty sure that impacted my choice of the kind of mix I wanted to play. I was still feeling the jet lag and my mood was right on point to record it.

Is there a particular theme or idea behind it?

Kind of. I like to express my personal taste while mixing different styles on my podcasts and this one wasn’t an exception. You can find a way more moody vibe on this one: deep sounds, breaks, flying pads, and dreamy melodies. It’s definitely a mix to listen and get inspired, just like I did while recording it.

How did you choose the tracks that you included?

I knew where to find the right records for this one. I have my records quite well organized and I didn’t want too many party vibes on it, so I went straight to those piles. I played the selection a few times and I chose the ones I thought would fit better.

What’s next on the horizon?

Right now packing bags to fly to the Australian summer for another exciting tour and some other trips afterward. USA, Central-South America, among others shows in Europe during this first period of the year. It’s looking fun already! New situations, new environments, old friends, and new ones on the way. Bring it on!

My Label Girada Unlimited is going smooth. The record number 06 is coming in the next weeks with a very interesting collaborative project. The label is in a great growing moment.

A third release will come out by the end of the month on Rawax. It’s a release called Of the Beaten Tracks, with three original tracks with a remix from Future Beat Alliance. I’m really proud and happy with this release and can’t wait to see the reaction of the crowd.

I took some time off the studio at the end of last year to relax, breath, and enjoy seeing the last finished projects coming out during these next months. Now, I can’t wait to go back in there in between the next tours all over the world with fresh ideas from many sources of inspiration.

Substance Lines Up Ostgut Ton EP Debut

Peter Kuschnereit (a.k.a Substance or DJ Pete) is up next on Ostgut Ton with Rise And Shine, his first solo EP on the Berghain-affiliated label. It’ll be the first Substance EP since 1998.

Kuschnereit has long been known to heads as an essential figure in Berlin dance music, though he has comfortably flown under the international radar. Born and raised in the central district of Kreuzberg, where he still lives in the same high-rise he grew up in, this year marks the 30th anniversary of his DJ career, a fitting moment to announce his first solo EP on Ostgut Ton following contributions to previous compilations Fünf and Ostgut Ton | Zehn, and his longstanding relationship to Berghain.

We’re told that Rise And Shine sees Kuschnereit fusing his deep, industrial aesthetic as Substance with the resonant bass-heavy leanings of DJ Pete.

A2. Countdown

A3. Bird Cave

B1. Distance

B2. Cruising

Rise And Shine will be out January 25 via Ostgut Ton, with “Countdown,”a potential set closer which blasts off with relentlessly rattling, scraping breaks, hissing German vox, and big chords, streaming below.

William Basinski Utilizes the Sounds of Two Black Holes Merging on New LP

Avant-garde composer William Basinski will release his latest album, On Time Out of Time, in March.

On Time Out of Time is a suite of works originally commissioned for the 2017 installations “ER=EPR” and “Orbihedron” by artists Evelina Domnitch and Dmitry Gelfand for the exhibition Limits of Knowing at Martin-Gropius-Bau, Berlin by curator Isabel de Sena. The works utilize, among other things, exclusive source recordings from the interferometers of LIGO (Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory) capturing the sounds of the merging of two distant massive black holes, 1.3 billion years ago.

The CD and digital formats feature two tracks: the 40-minute title track, “On Time Out of Time,” as well as “4(E+D)4(ER=EPR),” a track recorded for the aforementioned installation. The vinyl LP format features two exclusive mixes of the title track: “On Time Out of Time” on the a-side; and “On Time Out of Time (The Lovers)” on the b-side, made especially for the vinyl format.

Basinski last surfaced with last year’s collaborative album with Lawrence English, Selva Oscura.

Subscribe to XLR8Rplus and Get a Free Ticket to Cartulis Day / Trelik In London

XLR8R is offering XLR8R+ subscribers free passes to the upcoming Cartulis Day and Trelik event at FOLD in London. The party takes place on January 26 with one of the best lineups we’ve seen for a while, with Zip, Baby Ford, Laurine & Cecilio, Unai Trotti, Raphael Carrau, Z@p, and Junki Inoue.

The Cartulis Day parties were started in 2009 by DJ and producer Unai Trotti, originally based in different warehouses around East London. The aim was to bring back an almost lost techno/house minimal sound to the underground of the Eastside and with that bring some of the finest DJs the scene has to offer, such as DJ Masda, Francesco Del Garda, Akufen, Nicholas Lutz, and Jane Fitz to play. The next move was to start a label with fellow resident DJ and good friend Raphael Carrau. Since its first release in 2013, Cartilus Music has gone on to consistently churn out quality, collaborating with Melliflow on an EP earlier this year, among many other memorable releases.

The Trelik imprint, on the other hand, was started back in 1995 by legendary DJ and producer Baby Ford and has released timeless records by the likes of Eon and Thomas Melchior. After almost a decade break, it re-launched in 2010, welcoming artists such as Ion Ludwig, LD Nero, Les Points, and Alex Celler into the fold. Now Trelik is teaming up with Cartulis for this one-off event in what feels like the perfect blend of musical styles.

With January 26 looking like one of Cartluis Day’s biggest events yet, as a token of appreciation we are offering current subscribers of XLR8R+ and those who sign up before the event a limited amount of free guestlist passes.

For those who haven’t yet, SUBSCRIBE HERE and email your full name, subscription confirmation page, and “Cartulis Day” to [email protected] to claim your event pass. For those that are current subscribers, simply email your full name and Cartulis Day.

Due to limited availability, passes will be offered on a strictly first-come, first served basis. Subscribers are eligible for one pass only.

You can find more information on XLR8Rplus, the offer, and the event below. The seventh and current edition of XLR8Rplus is here, with subscription details here.

XLR8Rplus is a monthly subscription service that allows XLR8R to continue to support independent music and journalism. Every month, we release a package for our subscribers, which includes three exclusive tracks from three different artists, a dedicated artwork and PDF zine, ad-free browsing of XLR8R.com, and other goodies along the way (sample packs, discounts, content etc.). So far, we have released seven editions, featuring tracks from Roman Flügel, Wata Igarashi, SIT (Cristi Cons and Vlad Caia), Vril, Janeret, Alex Smoke, Scuba, Huxley Anne, Fred P, Homemade Weapons, John Dimas, Cosmin TRG, Hunter/Game, Einzelkind, and u-Ziq, plus a sample pack from Daedelus. XLR8Rplus costs $5 a month and each package, including the tracks, is only available to download for one month and only from XLR8Rplus—you won’t get the tracks on Beatport, Spotify, or any other platform, and only subscribers for that month will get them. At the time of writing, edition seven has just launched with exclusive tracks by Robert Dietz, Forest Drive West, and Julia Govor. Don’t sleep on this offer.

Celestial Trax Details Sophomore Album, ‘Serpent Power’

Joni Judén, better known as Celestial Trax, has shared details of his second full-length album, Serpent Power, scheduled for February 22 release via True Aether

The album was constructed at various locations in Finland over a 12-month period using synthesizers, tape machines, effect units, voice, electric, and acoustic guitar. Across 10 tracks, Judén weaves subtle yet complex worlds within worlds, conducting an “imaginary orchestra of earthly delights,” the label explains. “The intoxicating textures and strange dimensions are designed to cultivate the imagination away from screens: it is music for the journey inward, an ode to stillness. “

“I was drawn to the DNA of sound and how frequencies and textures interplay with each other, not to a preconceived model or style. I wanted this record to present itself more like paint on canvas, rather than an overly edited digital image,” Judén says.

The album follows last year’s Nothing Is Real, out via Purple Tape Pedigree, which knocked on the door of the surreal and psychedelic, whereas Serpent Power “dives in and fully commits itself.”

Tracklisting

01. Aura Cleansing

02. Underwater Garden

03. Sinking Through a Surface

04. Offline Offscreen

05. Way In is the Way Out

06. Suspend Midair

07. Peace

08. Healing (Garden Redux)

Serpent Power will land on on February 22 on digital, cassette, and limited deluxe edition, which includes a handmade USB capsule made of Finnish juniper, birch, pine, spruce or aspen, hand-crafted by Jukka Judén in Heinola, Finland. Each deluxe edition package also includes a one-of-a-kind polaroid photograph taken by the artist. Meanwhile, you can stream “Underwater Garden” below.

Little People Shares a Visual DJ Mix Comprised Entirely of XLR8R Downloads

Laurent Clerc (a.k.a Little People) has recorded and shared a live visual DJ mix comprised entirely of XLR8R downloads in support of a forthcoming LP, Landloper, due out this Friday on Clerc and Sun Glitter’s Future Archive Recordings.

Over the last half-decade, Clerc’s Little People project has been a regular fixture in XLR8R‘s downloads section with a string of originals and remixes released on our pages. The downloads section has provided Clerc with a wealth of material over the years, too, and is the inspiration for his latest mix project, as he explains:

“I check out XLR8R for a source of new music fairly often and have downloaded the top 100 downloads every year for the past 5 years. The mix is a reflection of the broad palette of electronic music XLR8R offers—and where it intersects with my own taste and aesthetic.”

Flowing through shimmering beat cuts, darker-hued house and techno, dubbed-out grooves, and warped arrangements, the mix provides a glimpse into the styles that inspired Landloper, and a beautifully curated summation of XLR8R‘s downloads section.

You can check out the mix via the player below, with Landloper available to pre-order here.

XLR8R‘s top 100 downloads of 2018 can be downloaded here.
