Premiere: Hear a Deep and Brooding Drum & Bass Cut From SubMarine

1985 Music will release a new EP from label newcomer SubMarine on November 2.

Continuing the trend set on his previous efforts, XERTZ finds SubMarine delivering a collection of high-quality, brooding drum & bass cuts, ranging from the deep and warped title track to the rolling grooves of “Dive Alarm,” and the frenetic rhythms of closing cut, “Angler Beat.”

Later this week, Shit Robot will return to Man Power‘s Me Me Me label with Cubed/Rotation.

The EP will be his first solo outing on the imprint, following a contribution to the We We We charity compilation and a remix of Forriner’s “Goodnight” on the Goodnight/Fizzy EP. Alongside the two originals, which range from the masterfully deep and low slung “Cubed” to the jacking grooves of “Rotation”—there’s also a jazzy digital bonus track, “The Life To Come”—will be two remixes from Edmondson and Vin Sol, who turn in dream broken beat and dark house interpretations, respectively.

Cubed/Rotation can be pre-ordered here ahead of Friday’s release, with the insatiable grooves of “The Life To Come” streaming in full below.

Podcast 566: Forest Drive West

Media shyness and mystery have become much used tools in contemporary electronic music. While some artists continually flirt with the media, splashed across magazines and blogs on an almost monthly basis, more artists are resisting the temptation, often because they just don’t like or need to self-promote, but others, too, in acknowledgement that less can sometimes be more; that elusiveness and  intrigue can actually increase interest and demand. You don’t have to look too far for examples, and for long periods Forest Drive West fitted perfectly in this category. Up until this month’s a Breaking Through feature with RA, it was impossible to find anything on Joe Baker, the man behind the music.

Baker, as it turns out, is a full-time school teacher and father, based out of East London. He began making music around the turn of the millennium, driven to make records for his DJing, little more than a hobby at the time. Taking inspiration from Brighton’s drum & bass nights, which he’d attend on weekends where time allowed, he began attempting to replicate these sounds, a habit that threw up a plethora or enjoyable challenges. 16 years of experience and experimentation later, Baker had some works of reasonable satisfaction and handed them to Tom Ford (a.k.a Peverelist) who snapped them up for Dnuos Ytivil, the sister to his Livity Sound. Next up was an appearance on Rupture London, one of several jungle EPs in an expanding discography that broadly encompasses deep and atmospheric techno, showcased most recently on Apparitions a much anticipated album debut for Livity.

Baker’s podcast is by and large a selection of his favourite tracks as of now, many his own—and many of them previously heard, selected from his vast array of unreleased works. It starts slow and deep, more of a home- or headphone-listening experience, before the tempo picks up around the 17-minute mark. Shackleton’s “Headcleaner” and Härdstedt’s “Timmersdala” add some intergalactic rhythms, before a pair of Baker’s own tracks mark the beginning of the calm and measured drum & bass-infused closure.

01. What have you been up to recently?

Just got back from a short trip to Berlin, where I played at the Industry with Claro Intelecto (live), Batu, Hodge, and Sully.

02. You just released your debut album, Apparitions. How do you reflect on the release, now it’s out?

I’m really pleased with how it came out and has been received. I’ve had some great feedback and messages from people who are enjoying it.

03. Where and when was the album recorded?

The album was made in my studio at home over the last year

04. What first drove you to get into music production, around the turn of the millennium?

Instrumental hip-hop and jungle, when I found out you could make music on a computer from sampling other records.

05. What did your earliest experiments sound like?

Terrible.

06. Where and when was the mix recorded?

Mixed at home in my studio last week with technics 1210, zone 23 mixer, and Serato.

07. How did you choose the records that you included?

Tried not to think about it too much and picked stuff I’ve been enjoying listening to and playing out.

08. How do you feel it compares to one of your club mixes?

Would depend on the club night and who else was playing, first half is probably deeper than I would play in a club most of the time.

09. What’s next on the horizon? Can we expect any new material soon?

Couple of new EPs coming soon, some remixes, collaboration projects and hopefully a live show.

Due to temporary issues regarding the GDPR, EU readers can download the podcast here.

Lee Gamble’s UIQ Reveals Nkisi Album Debut, ‘7 Directions’

Lee Gamble‘s UIQ label will release the debut album of Nkisi, 7 Directions, out January 18.

The Congolese-born, London-based producer and DJ co-founded NON Worldwide in 2015 alongside Chino Amobi and Angel Ho, as a collective of “African artists, and of the diaspora, who use sound as their primary media to articulate the visible and invisible structures that create binaries in society, and in turn, distribute power.” Aside from her participation in NON, she has released on Rush Hour sublabel MW and Warp’s Arcola.

We’re told that 7 Directions is rooted firmly in the African Cosmology of the Bantu-Kongo and in particular the writings of Kongo scholar Dr Kimbwandende Kia Bunseki Fu-Kiau. The label describes it as Nkisi’s “most singular record to date,” explicitly exploring the incredible polyrhythms of Congolese percussion music.

When we hear before we see, voice and sound waves interplay between consciousness and hallucinations. Allowing the rhythmic to experiment with conditions of perception, disrupting predetermined expectations…Through manipulating rhythm, we create movements of energy… this energy determines collective behaviour and allows for new ways of producing knowledge…when we hear before we see, we can think about predicting the future and the manipulation of imagery that happens. through visionary possession we are renewed from within, in a system of systems… the pattern of patterns in being, it reaches and remains forever incomplete” – Nkisi

Specimens “Unfold In All Directions”

Alex Ives (a.ka Specimens) will release new LP In The Dust Of Idols on November 30 via SVS/First Terrace

Ives is an ambient/drone musician from South London; inspired by the likes of William Basinski, Lawrence English, Leyland Kirby, and Helm, he started creating experimental soundscapes and drones in 2014 before releasing a debut album in 2016.

Forthcoming LP In The Dust Of Idols, a record that “explores the mortality, existentialism, and the dread one can feel in the face of an apparently meaningless world,” will land in November and sees Ives “turn his focus to his dual Caribbean and British heritage for the first time in his music,” we’re told. The record documents Ives’ search for meaning in his identity and how the subsequent representation can be challenged, perceived, and adopted.

In The Dust Of Idols will land on November 30, with “Unfold In All Directions” available for download below, or here for EU readers due to temporary GDPR restrictions.

Cómeme Announces New Matias Aguayo EP featuring Mujaji The Rain

Cómeme will release a new EP from Matias Aguayo featuring actress, DJ, and singer Ayanda Seoka (a.k.a Mujaji The Rain), resident at the legendary Bar Kitchener’s all femme “Pussy Party,” a space for “feminist/queer action and dancefloor joy” in the center of Johannesburg, South Africa.

“Rain” is a deeply rhythmical track, inspired, we’re told, “by the grooves that converged when Cómeme crossed paths with the syncopations people in Joburg were dancing to.” On top of this modern groove is Mujaji the Rain enjoying how she gets wet under a dark and tropical sky. Included also is a “Club Mix” and a “Drums Mix”; meanwhile, on Side B is  “Serious” plus an instrumental version.

All tracks on this are written in a 6/8 signature.

Matias Aguayo last appeared on the label two years ago in collaboration with DJ Spoko.

Growing up the three of us all had very different Christmases. But we recently discovered we all had the exact same favorite Christmas song. Premiere: Hear an Oddball Club Cut From Kalbata and Maayan Nidam

Today, October 29, Brush & Broom released The Town, a new two-track EP from label head Kalbata and Maayan Nidam.

The Town is the third release to land on Brush & Broom since its inception in January of this year, following on from two solo efforts from Kalbata himself. In solo mode, both artists are known for their versatility, confidently striding across minimal, techno, acid, and disco, and on The Town they find a zany middle ground with two warped club cuts that touch on electro, industrial, and old-school techno.

To celebrate the release, the duo have offered up a full stream of the EP’s head-warping title track, available to stream via the player below.

You can pick up the EP here.

Objekt Shares “Lost and Found (Found Mix)” Single

After recently announcing his return to PAN with album Cocoon Crush, his first LP since 2014’s Flatland, Objekt has today shared second single “Lost and Found (Found Mix).”

Written between 2014 and 2018 in Berlin and on the road, Cocoon Crush once again sees the producer “jettisoning the functional requirements of the dancefloor,” we’re told, exploring a “more introspective side, with themes of human interaction resonating throughout the record as it ruminates on a spectrum of complex moods rooted in four years of sometimes turbulent personal experience.”

The record is said to represent an aesthetic departure from Flatland’s largely synthetic tonality, drawing from organic source material and natural textures “to illustrate perplexing and unfamiliar sceneries in photorealistic detail,” the label says. It’s described as the “purest manifestation” of Objekt’s own musical personality to date, and “ruminates on a spectrum of complex moods rooted in four years of sometimes turbulent personal experience.”

The album is mastered by Rashad Becker, featuring photography by Kasia Zacharko, and layout by Bill Kouligas.
