Steiger Share Experimental Jazz Cut From New Album

Ghent trio Steiger will drop their second album, Give Space, via Sdban Ultra on September 14.

In an attempt to explore how space can influence and affect music, Give Space was recorded at seven different locations, with “the music composed to fit and fight these locations within a dialogue of acoustics, atmospheres, and appetition.” Field recordings and sounds from each location were recorded and became an important part of the process as the band looked to break the pattern of classical studio practices, as they explain:

“It is this aspect, space, and the influence of space on music that we, as musicians, find very inspiring and would like to go deeper on the basis of extensive research. Since a classical studio always strives for the best, most comfortable acoustics, the influence of such a space on the music can often be reduced to one kind of sound and environment in which the music develops. We want to break this classical pattern and strive for live recordings without an audience, whereby we create a sound of each location depending on the space and / or location.”

With influences spanning jazz, rock, pop, classical, and electronic music, Steiger’s music defies categorization. Across the eight-tracks on the album, the band meld a confounding mix of free-flowing rhythms, piano lines, and sound design into inspired walls of sound.

The first taste of the album, “Captain Hooker,” can be heard below, with pre-order options here.

Uppy Joins Leaving Records

Next up on Matthewdavid’s Leaving Records is Uppy, the project of Los Angeles-based artist Alexandra Crotta.

Little is known about the project, but the label describes it as a hybridization cloning project sourced from a myriad of influential artists such as Bjork, SOPHIE, Dorian Electra, Kim Petras, Eartheater, and Sarah McLaughlin.

Leaving Records will be releasing Medicute, Uppy’s debut EP, this Fall, with a stream of EP cut “Hm” available below.

Milo Spykers Next on Amelie Lens’ LENSKE

Belgian artist Milo Spykers is up next on Amelie Lens’ LENSKE imprint.

Infinite, a four-tracker, is Spykers’ debut EP. We’re told to expect a collection of “4×4 bangers that leave no ambiguity about their intent.”  He says the tracks were largely a result of his fascination with the mixing process and analogue gear’s “variable and slightly more unstable properties” and are informed by his early experiences at Fuse in Brussels, Kompass Klub in Ghent, and the occasional trip to Berlin.

LENSKE is born out of Lens’ collaborations with Farrago and conceptualised as an incubator for emergent talents in the darker arts of techno production. Previous contributions have come from Lens, Farrago, and Kobosil.

A2 / 2. No Relation

Marley Carroll “Starlings”

Marley Carroll has released double single Starlings & Seven Crows and detailed plans for an upcoming full-length, Flight Patterns, out later this year.

Carroll is a classically-trained pianist and percussionist who began winning nationwide DJ battles at the age of 17. His early musical experiments wove the precision of mid-era Warp (think Boards of Canada, Autechre) with the gauzy emotional haze of shoegaze, culminating in his debut LP, Melanaster. His follow-up, 2013’s Sings, revealed a more rhythmically-driven version of Carroll’s vision, influenced by the dancefloor energy of larger live audiences.

We’re told that themes of “migration and movement” accompany double single Starlings” & “Seven Crows. “This all started with the crows,” he explains. “I work from a small home studio in the mountains surrounded on all sides by trees, and I began to feel this spooky intelligence all around me, like I was being watched. I became fascinated by their activities, their comings-and-goings, the little dramas that are playing out all around us, all the time. That led to an obsession with bird calls and communication and now it’s gotten to the point where I have a Cornell Ornithology Lab calendar hanging in my bedroom.”

With Flight Patterns, we’re told that Carroll has tuned his instruments skyward and used samples and textures from the natural world, including bird songs, field recordings, gongs, deep basses, wooden drums, and plaintive analogue synths.

In support of the double single, out now on Loci Records, you can download “Starlings” in full via the WeTransfer button belowor here for EU readers due to temporary GDPR restrictions.

Flight Pattern will land on November 16.

Philip Grass “The Warm Up” (ft. Emilie Weibel)

Last week, Portland duo Philip Grass launched their new label Periphery Records with Summer Thing, a six-track EP featuring two collaborations with Emilie Weibel.

Across the EP, Philip Grass gives an exercise in groovy, sun-tinged house that, as the label aptly describes, is built for “driving with the windows down and warm, late nights with friends.” Full of swinging grooves and affecting melodies, Summer Thing kicks off Periphery in style and gives a range of vibes for summer dancefloors the world over.

In support of the EP, the label has offered up the opening cut, “The Warm Up,” featuring Emilie Weibel, an insatiable groove-laden track, as today’s XLR8R download, available via WeTransfer below.

On the A-side, “High Horse” is a fresh track from The Advent that has been prominent in his live sets, features a vocal that can also be recognised as a favourite in Klock’s DJ sets in the past few months. The flip-side features two previously unreleased tracks from the ’90s when the approach was more raw and groovy.

Murder He Wrote “Air” (Dub)

Murder He Wrote has launched his Rhythm Athletic label with Volume One, a six-track EP scheduled to land August 31.

Murder He Wrote is a long-time member of the Roska Kicks & Snares roster, and has been tipped as one of the UK funky scene’s flag bearers by both Toddla T and Marcus Nasty.

Jamaica Suk “Two Moons” (Peter Kirn Remix)

Back in July, Jamaica Suk released her latest EP on Peter Kirn‘s Establishment imprint.

The EP, titled Clockwise, features three hypnotic techno weapons from Jamaica, alongside a remix from Argentinian up-and-comer Pulse One, and follows the launch of her label Gradient earlier this year. On her three originals, Jamaica presents a confounding sonic world that flows through “Two Moons,” a twisted slice of slow-mo funk, “Clockwise,” a fathoms deep nightmarish club cut, and “Vision,” which, as it suggests, conjures grimy cinematic images. On the remix front, Pulse One turns his hand to the EP’s title track, reworking it into a massive broken beat wall of sound.

In support of the release, the label has offered up a bonus, previously unreleased remix of “Two Moons” from label head Peter Kirn, who delivers a menacing ride through gritty dub rhythms.

You can pick up the EP here, with Peter Kirn’s remix available below.

Due to temporary issues regarding the GDPR, EU readers can download the track here.

Watch Flava D Break Down a Track in Ableton

Last week, Point Blank released a track breakdown with UK DJ and producer Flava D.

In the video, Flava sits down with Point Blank’s DJ Ravine to breakdown her track “Happy,” a typically catchy and chunky garage cut, running through a few of her production techniques, including how she treats her vocals, percussion secrets, workflow tips, and her go to plugins such as Ableton’s Ping Pong Delay, Flanger, and Auto Pan, plus Native Instruments’ FM8 and Massive.

You can watch the video in full via the player below, with more on Point Blank’s courses here.

Premiere: Hear a Warped New Track From L.B. Dub Corp

Late this month, Luke Slater’s L.B. Dub Corp alias will return with a 10″ for Stroboscopic Artefacts‘ Totem series.

The Totem series launched back in June with label head Lucy’s Tarkomania 10″, signaling the series’ focus towards a “wider and warmer” sound, whilst investigating the relation between sound and material object—each release is pressed to an emblematic transparent 10″ vinyl. For the second outing, Lucy invites Slater’s L.B. Dub Corp project for a typically stripped back exercise in house music. From the brilliant dubbed-out bass of “Roar” to the the tense and gritty drums of “Hard Wax” and the closing cut’s alluring grooves, Roar is a fine edition to the series and a set of fine ammo for DJs.

Ahead of the release on August 31, you can pre-order the record here, with the closing track, “Step Sure Dub,” streaming in full below.
