Podcast 556: Helios

Helios is an outlet of Keith Kenniff, the Boston-based multi-instrumentalist, composer, electronic music producer, and Berklee College of Music graduate. Kenniff is also one half of the indie rock/shoegaze band Mint Julep alongside his wife, while he also records and performs piano as Goldmund, for which he has seven LPs on Unseen Music, Type Records, and Western Vinyl, including this year’s Occasus

Kenniff kick-started the Helios project with 2004’s Unomia, and he’s since shared dozens of ambient releases under the name, including five long-players via his own Unseen Records or Type. And while they’re all different in their own subtle ways, the musical work is cinematic, deeply introspective, and wonderfully transportive—understated yet impactful. It’s music for headphones; music for the dead of night, best enjoyed free from distraction so as to best appreciate the rich textures and nuances within.

Up next is Veriditas, Helios’ sixth full-length but the first on Ghostly International. We’re told that it introduces “unusual shapes and landscapes” to the Helios catalogue. Whereas past songs have followed traditional structures—discernable bell curves with beginnings, arcs, and ends—the focus here is texture and harmony. “I wanted to explore emotionality within something more static,” Kenniff says.

In support of the release, Keniff has browsed through his Helios archives, from 2004 to the present day, and compiled some of his favourite pieces into one cohesive mix. Much of this material is unreleased or has gone unheard, having drifted under the radar for one reason or another. As would be expected, the mix as a whole is delightfully intricate, featuring moments of uptempo bliss juxtaposed with periods of beatless ambience. Drift off, you sure will.

What have you been up to recently?

Aside from this album I just released an album (as Goldmund) called, Occasus in April, recently completed a short documentary for HBO out later this year, a score for a feature documentary out in the Fall and a handful of ads for Google, Pier 1, and Samsung. My wife and I are prepping to albums to be released next year as Mint Julep.

You’ve recently signed an album to Ghostly. How did the relationship come about?

I’ve been a fan of Ghostly and their roster for years and participated in a compilation they released several years ago. Someone from their team reached out to see what I was up to and I happened to have an album near completion, so we discussed doing it together and they were into it. I’m excited to be a part of what they’re doing.

What can we expect from the album?

It’s more ambient, textural, and experimental, less about guitars and big swells and percussion. I feel as though I’ve become more and more enamoured with harmony and less with melody and traditional song forms and didn’t want to necessarily re-cycle the process I’ve been doing for the past decade. I will still go back to using those other elements on future albums, but I’m happy to explore in this space for a bit.

How does it differ from your earlier material?

I released an EP called Moiety in 2012, and I’d say it’s a little more in line with that. Generally, there are some lighter more typical Helios moments but also a few moments that dwell in a darker aesthetic, it’s more about variations of timbre than sort of a “pretty” bed of sounds, which I think is typically the kind of thing I’ve done in the past.

How did you select the records you included in this mix?

This collection is material of mine that’s either unreleased or b-sides/rarities and a few remixes peppered throughout that people may not have been exposed to. It spans from about 2004 to 2018.

Was there a particular idea you were looking to convey?

I thought it would be an interesting idea if I could take all of these tracks from different time periods and different approaches and somehow make it seem like a cohesive mix or an album playlist.

Where do you envisage it being listened to?

Headphones or a quiet space.

What else do you have coming up this year?

I have a few more film/ad projects coming out and working on finishing up the Mint Julep material with my wife.

Geotic Returns to Ghostly with New LP

Geotic is back with a new eight-track full-length, Traversa, coming October 19 on Ghostly.

Geotic is an alias of Los Angeles artist Will Wiesenfeld, also known as Baths, and previously appeared on Ghostly with last year’s Abysma LP.

As the title suggests, a central theme to Traversa is the idea of travel and being carried off to different places through music. We’re told that each song contains “propulsive suites of startling beauty, summoning a different geographic locale, memory, and mood.”

The album’s genesis traces back to a New York release show for Abysma last year. Seeking additional material for his set, the spines of these songs began to take shape and sparked the homebound sessions and soft motion of Traversa.

The whole inspiration of this record is borne of that feeling when travel is good and you can let your brain go where it wants to. From the very beginning, music was more transportive for me than anything else. In all forms of media, I’m constantly gravitating towards things that allow me to feel something different from my day-to-day life.“—Geotic

Szun Waves “Moon Runes”

Szun Waves will release their second album at the end of this month, titled New Hymn To Freedom.

Szun Waves is the project of Luke Abbott, well known for his explorations of the zones between pure ambience and the leftmost fringes of club culture; Jack Wyllie, who sits in the vanguard of UK fusions of jazz, classical, and club music; and Australian drummer Laurence Pike, who has likewise found a unique voice in improvised and experimental music-making, whether in the bands Triosk or PVT, or as a solo artist. His debut solo album Distant Early Warning landed in March 2018.

From Wyllie adding shimmering sustained sax notes to Abbott’s ambient pieces in 2013, Szun Waves emerged when Pike was added to the mix, energising the sound but still keeping its levitational qualities. Their 2016 self-released debut album hit a natural groove, and now New Hymn To Freedom features six entirely live improvisations—“no edits or overdubs.”

Neel Returns to Token Records with ‘Transition’ EP

After last year’s Calcata, Neel will soon return to Token with Transition

Neel is an artist who pays close attention to the technical aspect of sound whether producing in the studio, DJing or playing live. His output fuses rhythm and texture with techno and ambience, shown on his releases and his immersive ambient AV shows, his solo live techno shows, and Voices From the Lake, his live and studio collaboration with Donato Dozzy.

We’re told that Transition continues in this vein. Conceptually based around four elements in the group known as the transition metals and recorded live in one take, each track is a “mind-bending trip through the periodic table that retains the human touch of a live performance,” the label explains.

The four-track EP will be the Belgian label’s 86th release

AVION “Angel Ruts”

Marcel Fengler recently released the final part of IMF10, a three-part compilation series detailing the past, present, and future of his label Index Marcel Fengler (IMF)

IMF10 is a collection of exclusive originals and remixes created by some of electronic music’s most skilled producers, alongside contributions from rising talents who are set to shape the direction of the label for years to come. Each volume consists of six tracks and encapsulates a different tone, aimed to highlight not only the versatile sonic constellation of the label but also the breadth Fengler enjoys exploring in his DJ sets.

Part one explores deeper and more hypnotic territory, as Alva Noto makes his debut for IMF re-working the Fengler classic “Sphinx,” alongside a new contribution from DIN, the collaborative project between Fengler and Efdemin—a welcome return with the project after a three-year hiatus. Elsewhere, friends Matrixxman (in collaboration with producer Riccardo Limiti) and Lucy also join the compilation alongside Scuba with a rework courtesy of his SCB project, plus a new track from Slovenian’s Blaukoma. Part two, meanwhile, focuses on the warmer and more soulful side of IMF and features an array of artists making their debut for the label.

Part 3 focuses on the tougher end of the techno spectrum and features Marcel Fengler’s first original production in two years, a rare offering from Sebastian Kramer (a.k.a Redshape), a prized Luke Slater re-work of Thomas Hessler, Peter Van Hoesen, and also AVION, who delivers “Angel Ruts.”

Born at the Baltic sea, AVION played his first gigs at the young age of 15 around his hometown Rostock and the surrounding cities Hamburg and Schwerin. His productions and DJ sets feature a melancholic warmth while playfully exploiting industrial sounds, straight rhythms, and noises. “Angel Ruts” is no different: a straight-up industrial techno track for peak-hours madness. In support of the release, you can grab it now in full via the WeTransfer button below—or here for EU readers due to temporary GDPR restrictions.

Premiere: Hear a Haunting Experimental Bass Track From Derek Piotr

Derek Piotr‘s latest album, Grunt, will land via DPSR on September 28.

Grunt is Piotr’s eighth solo record and is formed from 21 short-form sonic excursions that are at once brutal and engrossing. Over the years, Piotr’s work has focused on taking recognizably analog sounds—the voice, string instruments, found sounds—and reconstructing them into wild sonic tapestries, and his latest, as the name suggests, looks to the “most primal and animalistic of utterances,” a grunt, for its base material. The 21 “electroacoustic miniatures” on the album present a body of work that morphs and evolves at every turn, whilst constantly teetering on the edge of collapse. The album also features a reworked version of “Redirect” by legendary experimental artist Kevin Drumm.

Ahead of the release, Piotr has offered up a full stream of album cut “Despot,” a confounding two-and-a-half minute ride through rippling textures and haunting bass tones, available via the player below.

You can pre-order the record here.

Sam Slater Details Bedroom Community LP, ‘Wrong Airport Ghost’

Sam Slater will release Wrong Airport Ghost, his latest LP, via Icelandic label Bedroom Community in October.

Slater is a composer currently based in Berlin. In the summer of 2016, Slater found himself in Rajasthan, India, where he worked closely with the musician Krishna Bhopa. The pair delved deep into the mechanics of the stringed instrument, pulling it apart to begin to understand what made it work and what caused it to break. We’re told that this idea of deconstruction became fundamental to the whole process. “Just like every sound comes from one source, the concept of dismantling it in order to build another is essential,” the label explains.

Last year in New York, Slater demoed and contorted a single string source, unravelling its potential and coaxing out all aural possibilities. He found with the right encouragement, soft spectral voices emerged out of overtones and amplifiers. The project was finally realized when Slater took his mutations to Iceland where he worked from Bedroom Community’s studio alongside producers Alfie Brooks and Bridget Ferill.

The final result is a “captivating record; ominous and harsh; soft and emotionally striking,” the label explains. .
