Houndstooth to Release Debut Pariah LP, ‘Here From Where We Are’

Houndstooth will release Pariah‘s debut album next month, titled Here From Where We Are. It will be the artist’s first release in six years and is said to mark “a natural progression in his sound across nine interconnected pieces.”

Arthur Cayzer was a relative latecomer to dance music. He grew up in various hardcore and punk bands before moving to London and being swept away by dubstep. After just six months messing around making his own stuff on Logic, he drew the attention of R&S, and over the next two years, he released three EPs with the Belgian label.

Since then, Cayzer has continued to DJ and play live with Blawan as Karenn. Musically, though, we’re told he’s felt he’s been pressuring himself into making the music people expected, rather than music that was an honest reflection of himself. It was only by taking a step back to analyze the music that has always resonated with him that gave him a renewed confidence in his work. After one track was finished, an album of coherent pieces naturally followed.

We’re also told that Although Here From Where We Are is inspired by a series of personal reflections, responses, and reactions, though Cayzer is keen for people to process it in their own way, free from interference.

Ross From Friends Details Debut Album, ‘Family Portrait’

Having recently made his inaugural outing on Brainfeeder with the Aphelion EP, British producer Ross From Friends (a.k.a Felix Clary Weatherall) has detailed his debut album on Flying Lotus’ label.

We’re told that Family Portrait is characterized by a perpetual desire to experiment and Clary Weatherall’s obsessive attention to detail. It’s to showcase his ability to shift and evolve, “moving from the world of lo-fi to the world of FlyLo,” the label explains.

The 12-track release is a culmination of almost two years of intense studio time, working 20 hour days, and often spending months perfecting just one aspect of a track. “I tried to be careful with every single sound,” Clary Weatherall explains, “Trying new things, making a bit more of an explosive sound.” The album also finds Felix recording his own voice for the first time, with the resulting tracks acting as snapshots of his personal life while recording. “Every time I went to make music the things which would really grab me are the emotional things, and while I’m in that place I felt I could really focus on the track. That was a massive part of this album, tapping into my emotions… into my emotional instability.”

Arp Shares New Track ““Nzuku”” Blending Ambient Music, Cosmic Jazz, and Minimalism

Producer and multi-instrumentalist Alexis Georgopolous (a.k.a Arp) has shared “Nzuku,” taken from his upcoming Zebra album, out June 22 via Mexican Summer.

The track is taken from Zebra, Georgopolous’ first full-length for Mexican Summer, and his fifth album in total. It arrives after several years of quiet for Arp, in which Georgopoulos released a collaborative album with Jefre Cantu-Ledesma, started a regular show on NTS Radio, and retreated to the studio to write and record.  We’re told to expect a work that references ambient music, spiritual jazz, minimalism, pop, kosmische, and more.

Three of Georgopoulos’ earlier albums have arrived on Smalltown Supersound. He also released a cassette full-length for Geographic North, released in 2016.

Great Dane Returns with New Full-Length, ‘Gamma Ray’

Great Dane is back this year with Gamma Ray, a new full-length album, scheduled for July 20 release via his newly enacted label ADBC Records

The Los Angeles producer launched his debut album Alpha Dog in 2013, followed by Beta Cat in 2014, and the self-titled Great Dane in 2015. The following year, Dane ventured out, releasing his fourth project, the Lost & Loved EP on Hu¢¢i’s infamous U.K.-based imprint Veyron Arche.

Gamma Ray is a “sonic travel journal” that was created during—and inspired by—Great Dane’s tours throughout Asia and the United Kingdom last year, and his first time presenting his music live outside of North America. “I wanted to take some time and figure out my goals in music and where I wanted to take things after my self-titled album,” he shares. “I now feel like the release Great Dane (2015) was sort of like a deep breath in between the continuous narrative of Alpha Dog, Beta Cat, Gamma Ray (and beyond). This album continues the story—and since we’ve moved from the most common house pets in the world to a stingray, you can expect things to get weird.”

We’re told to expect 14 tracks of “innovative sound design and inspired rhythm.”

The album took two years to finalize and find the light of day on his new imprint.

Vlad Caia Details Debut Album, ‘Division’

Vlad Caia has today released the first part of his debut solo album, titled Division.

Caia, a Bucharest-based DJ-producer, has previously released on Pluie/Noir Recordings, Meander, and Amphia, the label he co-runs with Cristian-Ioan Munteanu (a.k.a Cristi Cons). It is here that he’ll release Division as the label’s 14th release.

Alongside Cristi Cons, Caia also DJs, plays live, and produces as SIT (meaning “Sideways Invisibility Theory”); together they’ve released two full-lengths, namely 2009’s Sideways via Amphia and 2018’s Invisibility via Sushitech.

Division will span over two parts, each of which will feature tracks with different characters, dynamics, and composition styles.

We’re told that Caia draws inspiration from the label’s entire creative work to date and that the album is structured in a symmetrical way, not only musically, but also visually. “This mirror-like musical progression starts with lots of dynamics and harmonies which then continue with a more sonically tranquil section while heading towards a dynamic ending, thus completing the symmetry and binding both parts in a seamless album,” Caia explains.

Tracklising—Division Part 1

A1. Division (8:28)

B1. Sidepoint (9:03)

C1. Give Receive (8:58)

D1. Border Patrol (7:09)

D2. Interstice (6:02)

Division Part 1 is out now via Amphia, with part 2 set to land in the Autumn.

Podcast 545: Lamache

Thibaut Machet (a.k.a Lamache) returns to the XLR8R pages with a very different type of feature. In April last year, as many of you will remember, Machet bravely spoke to XLR8R about the crippling anxieties that for so long had held him back—preventing him from even exiting his front door, not to mention restricting the extensive travel and performance that are basic requirements of his occupation. It was a candid exchange that focused on the man behind the music while revealing a dark side of life in the industry that remains so gravely underexposed. Few people had any inclination that success could bear such costs.

It’s a different story today. Machet has spent the best part of three years working hard to keep his anxieties in check, and they’re as controlled as they’ve been in some time. It’s no coincidence that his touring schedule and profile have picked up, too; freed to travel, he’s established himself as a regular at Europe’s leading venues without a release to his name—an achievement to which few can lay claim. His sets are maturely composed, featuring warped-out, groove-laden minimal cuts. He’s a dedicated and gifted selector.

Machet’s rise has coincided with that of Discobar, the young but much-respected imprint that pushes the work of Machet’s friends within these aforementioned aesthetics. Among them are Zendid, Robin Ordell, and Alex & Digby; the last EP landed with a Maayan Nidam remix. In celebration of the label’s three-year anniversary, its key figures toured through Europe and North America, finishing with on a high in Los Angeles in February.

Lamache’s podcast for XLR8R captures his style perfectly—mature, groovy, off-kilter, and laced with the hidden gems that he invests so much of his time in uncovering. He opts not to provide a tracklisting but advises us that the mix includes works from Asper Bothrops, Turning Man, Lateral Line, plus the first release of a new label called Amorfo, out now.

How has 2018 been for you so far?

This year has been amazing so far, a lot of travels, new cities and countries. Also, as you said above, we celebrated the three-year anniversary of Discobar with the whole crew so we had a few interesting showcases all around Europe, Russia, and in the United States of America.

I am feeling super great at the moment and I am enjoying my touring life so much. It is busy but the way I am handling it is perfect.

What’s next for Discobar?

There are a lot of things coming up very soon. The last Zendid (Discobar 08) with a remix of Maayan Nidam was released a few weeks ago and it was a success. I am very happy.

Discobar 09, 10, and 11 are ready to go, so be ready for them.

Some new artists will join the family and, of course, the main ones will present new stuff also.

When and where was this mix recorded?

This mix was recorded one morning at home in Berlin—no friends around, just my cats to support me and annoy me while I was trying to stay focus.

On what equipment did you record it on?

I played this set, vinyl only in one take obviously with a pair of Technics SL-1210 and the E&S DJR400 mixer.

How did you select the records you included?

I went through the records I am playing at the moment and I also tried to find some special ones that I love in my collection but it’s always hard to select just a few when you make a podcast.

Was there a particular idea you were looking to convey?

There was not a particular idea, I always try to tell a story when I play music, I do not stay in one specific style or sound. This mix is a blend of new music and old stuff but especially the music of my friends.  There is so much good music out there at the moment. It’s amazing to be able to dig into the new releases again.

What else do you have coming up this year?

Well, the summer has started here in Berlin, the weather has been amazing and CDV’s sessions as well eheh!

I have few festivals in Europe (Sonar, Romania, France…), a little tour in South America, some more Club Der Visionaere days/nights, of course, and a few things in Ibiza with some friends.  It is an exciting time of the year, people are happy and terraces of the cafés are getting full again.

I also recently joined the French agency Yoyaku so I am excited to see the next projects coming up.

Lucas Freire “Sleeping Beauty”

Last month, Barcelona-based artist Lucas Freire released his latest EP, Euphoria, via OFF Recordings

Euphoria, his debut offering for OFF Recordings, features three deep and rolling originals, alongside remixes by Oliver Deutschmann and Tom Hades. For techno heads, Euphoria offers a range of club tools, from the aptly-named uplifting title track to the dark synth lines of “Beyond Democracy” and the melancholic vibes of “Sleeping Beauty.” On the remix front, Oliver Deutschmann delivers a trippy and driving remix of “Sleeping Beauty,” whilst Belgium producer Tom Hades gives a more slow-burning interpretation of the title track.

In support of the release, which you can pick up here, Freire has offered up “Sleeping Beauty” as today’s XLR8R download, available via WeTransfer below.
