3 Smoked Olives Festival Details 2018 Plans

Romania’s 3 Smoked Olives Festival will return for its sixth edition this summer, taking place from July 25 to July 30 on an island on the Danube, close to the transfer point by ferry between Ostrov, Romania and Silistra, Bulgaria. This year’s lineup includes names such as Ion Ludwig, Andrey Pushkarev, Sedee, Clovis, and Raha from Japan.

3 Smokes Olives was first organized eight years ago as an outdoor gathering for a group of friends and has now evolved to become an event in itself, with multiple stages set up and various well-known artists. We’re told that visitors will also enjoy a varied and outdoorsy program. Besides the music-filled evenings, they can do yoga or enjoy a boat ride on the Danube. The braver ones can give wakeboarding a go; plus, the islanders will witness an astronomic show, a meteor shower called Delta Aquariid, which will peak on Saturday night, July 28.

The festival takes place on an island near the town of Călărași which is 130 km away from Bucharest, most of them being on the A2 highway connecting Bucharest to Constanța.

R&S to Release Benjamin Damage EP, ‘Malfunction/Binary’

R&S Records will release a new Benjamin Damage EP, titled Malfunction / Binary.

The release follows on from 2017’s Montreal, a four-track release that landed on R&S last year and proved to be one of the Belgian label’s biggest techno releases of the last few years.

We’re told Malfunction / Binary picks up where Montreal left off, with pistoning rhythms, breakneck beats, and monolithic bass, but that this time the mood is more reflective and optimistic. It was made between London and Berlin, following recent live shows at Berghain and Oval Space. “Being on tour with all my gear I find it quite easy to work in new places,” he explains. “I like the energy of different cities and it’s good to keep moving.”

02. Binary

Malfunction/Binary will land on July 13, with “Malfunction” streaming in full below—or here for EU readers due to temporary GDPR restrictions.

Lando Next on DVS1’s Mistress

DVS1’s Mistress Recordings will soon release Mistress 10 by San Francisco-via-Berlin-via-LA producer Lando, real name Antaeus Lando Roy, which will hit stores on June 20.

The release lands after the Sacramento-born artist featured on DVS1’s Fabric 96 mix. We’re told to expect a four-tracker exploring and sampling the melodics and musicality of early Blaxploitation soundtracks.

Lando has been producing, performing, DJing, and releasing music since 2005 on such labels like Hotflush, Rush Hour, Ultramajic, Tanstaafl Planets, and his very own imprint Myth Music.

The four-track EP is the label’s 10th release.

The Mistress 10 EP is simply, for the most part, a snapshot of my interests, inspirations, and stimulus encountered in the current moment of time in which the tracks were made. I’ve lately been extra engaged (more than usual) in the melodics and musicality of early Blaxploitation scores and soundtracks, hence the name Hutch, (i.e., soul brother Willie Hutch, the Blaxploitation score composer don), and sampling it in ways unconventional to my norm, while sprinkling over random improvised synthesis with generic drum machine percussion. I’ve been obsessed with hitting the record button for an hour or so and going to town, tapping in aimless sporadic elements throughout, keeping those so-called happy accidents. I guess its sort of ode to the Jazz approach in my own weird way. I also continue to revert back to using these sorts of enigmatic, mysterious tones, sequences, and melodies, even when I try not to. I just fall back into it, and it works for me. I guess I’d blame it on my love for X-Files and all things extraterrestrial.”— Lando

DJ Spielberg “Glam Shaming”

After a few tracks on Soundcloud and the anthem “Useful Powder” on the first record of the No She Doesn’t label (NSD 001), DJ Spielberg will soon present his debut solo EP, titled Virtual Eden—the label’s second release.

Over three tracks, we’re told to expect a lush array of sample-based work that ranges from disco to jazz, all showing the prowess of the rising Portuguese DJ-producer.

TOKiMONSTA and Kim Ann Foxman Head up Genius Loci Festival

The sixth edition of Genius Loci is set to run June 21 to 25 in Baja, Mexico.

Genius Loci provides a cultural bridge between the music and surf communities along the California-Mexico coast, and this year’s edition will focus on Female headliners as a “tribute to all the badass musicians who ever had to answer antiquated interview questions about ‘what it’s like to be a girl in the music industry’,” Genius Loco co-founder Henry Pope says. You can catch performances from acclaimed bass artist TOKiMONSTA, Brooklyn’s Kim Ann Foxman, Tara Brooks, house duo KMLN, DEEP co-founder Marques Wyatt, Lonely Boy, and KCRW’s Jeremy Sole. Also on the lineup is Gina Calderoni, Zach Walker, John Wander, Massio, and, of course, festival co-founders Henry Pope and Loboman.

Phase Fatale Makes Ostgut Ton Debut with J.G. Ballard-Inspired EP

Phase Fatale will debut on Ostgut Ton next month with the Reverse Fall EP.

Over the past four years, Hayden Payne (a.k.a Phase Fatale) has earned a reputation as a techno innovator, both for the broad spectrum of dystopian electronics included in DJ sets as well as his deep understanding of synthesis and sound design in his productions. Having previously released on labels such as Jealous God, Payne made his Unterton debut with last year’s Anubis EP. Since then, he has settled into residencies at both Berghain in Berlin and Khidi in Tbilisi, released his first LP on Hospital Productions, and kicked off his own label BITE with a collaborative EP by himself and Silent Servant.

Reverse Fall is inspired in part by Crash, J.G. Ballard’s dystopian novel on the fetishization of car crashes. We’re told that it sees the New York native sharpen the rhythmic contours of his productions, “creating an imposing wall of sound within the techno framework.” The music is described as uncompromising motorized, cybernetic techno—infused with haunting soundtrack-like flourishes reminiscent of films by directors John Carpenter and Dario Argento.

Max Cooper Lines Up New Album, ‘One Hundred Billion Sparks’

Max Cooper has detailed his third studio album, One Hundred Billion Sparks, scheduled for Autumn release.

The album was conceived after Cooper spent a month in complete isolation at a remote cottage in Wales, and sees him “interrogate notions of identity whilst profiling the complex mechanisms that make us all wonderfully unique.”

“For me personally, the foundations of nature, in the broadest sense (including us), carry the most beauty and maddening incomprehensibility,” Cooper says. “The more something is distilled, the more its beauty is crystallized. That is why I am compelled to look for foundations as a general approach.”

While his previous album Emergence applies this reasoning outwards, One Hundred Billion Sparks applies it inwards, searching for artistry amongst the mechanisms, emotions, and constructs which yield our identity and experience.

‘”One Hundred Billion Sparks” is my attempt to express what was there after I had removed my everyday life. No phone calls, no emails, no messages, no human contact or conversation for a month, that was the idea. What I found were the fables we live inside, our constructs, the mechanisms which create them, and the experience of parsing them,” Cooper explains.

We’re told that whilst the sound palette is unmistakably Cooper’s, the album sees him experimenting with new styles.

Tulioxi “The New Acid Funk”

Late last month, Italian nu-disco artist Tulioxi dropped a stellar three-tracker on Night Noise Music

The new EP, titled The Outside, continues an illustrious career that has seen Tulioxi drop more than 30 releases an array of labels such as Minimal Kidz, Golden Soul Records, and his own Cosmic Sumo Recordings. Outside of production and DJing, Tulioxi also moonlights as a developer of the MEFF Modular Synth Exhibition in Florence, which is not so surprising when listening to his textural machine-driven creations.

On The Outside, Tulioxi’s analog chops are on full display, from the swinging spacey grooves of the EP’s title track to the eerie disco vibes of “You Are Bad Luck” and the hip-shaking acid weapon that is “New Acid Funk.” The Outside is also a direct reflection of Tulioxi’s creative influences, taking in “the streets of New York, its gangs, the dirt, and the funk.”

As a follow up to the EP’s release, Tulioxi has offered up “New Acid Funk” as today’s XLR8R download, available via WeTransfer below.

GAIKA Details Debut Album, ‘Basic Volume’

GAIKA will present his debut album next month via Warp Records, titled Basic Volume.

We’re told that Basic Volume is a “sprawling yet cohesive album that devours genres and spits them out, tangled around personal tales of love, loss, and rebellion.” The 15-track collection is co-produced by GAIKA, with additional production from SOPHIE, Dutch E Germ, Dre Skull, and DADRAS, Aart, as well as previous collaborators including Jam City, Nick Leon, and Buddy Ross.

GAIKA says: “Basic Volume takes its name of from my father’s maroon technology. It is the science he taught me before he left this world. It is the poetry we grew under and were made strong by its force. With this knowledge, I fought until my hands bled, propelled into combat by the god of metals. It’s all true, I nearly lost my heart to angry memories, waking dreams of burnt out laboratories and dead friends. I am this chemistry and it is I and so I wrote it here. Basic Volume is a collection of alchemical parables for all the Immigrants who wander the earth in search of themselves.”

“Now GAIKA’s darkly magnetic blend of gothic dancehall and industrial electronics has expanded into his most far-reaching work yet,” the label adds.

The release follows Gaika’s two EPs for Warp—Spaghetto and The Spectacular Empire—as well as a couple of self-released mixtapes.
