Los Angeles Multi-Instrumentalist Sam Gendel Returns to Leaving Records

Los Angeles multi-instrumentalist Sam Gendel has been commissioned by filmmaker Daniel Oh to compose the music for his yet-to-be-released film, The Labyrinth & The Long Road.

Sam went to work on this score, composing a nine-piece record in which all of the sounds are made from his alto sax. The end result is Pass If Music, which Leaving Records will be releasing next week, February 24.

We’re told that nebulous, ambient saxophone tones sinew throughout the record, creating a meditative space for the listener and smooth companion for the film. It’s “a turn” from his previous 4444 record, but “maintains the ethereal energy of Sam’s music while shading a new side of his metaphysical explorations.”

Hear a Grit-Covered Track From Jensen Interceptor & Assembler Code

This week, Jensen Interceptor & Assembler Code released their new EP, Natural Control, via Private Persons.

The EP, which is the first Private Persons release this year, follows on from the duo’s standout 6th Element EP on Boys Noize Records, which dropped late last year. Like that EP, Natural Control finds the pair delivering a set of monolithic club cuts filled full of gritty drum-machine rhythms, teeth-rattling bass, and searing synths lines, while touching on techno, EBM, electro, and breaks.

The vinyl-only release, which drops as a hand-stamped 12″, can be picked up here, with the EP’s devastating opening cut streaming in full via the player below.

Daedelus’ Magical Properties Imprint Welcomes YAYAYA

Daedelus has signed the European-based group YAYAYA to his label Magical Properties, and their self-titled debut will land on February 23.

The music found on Daedelus’ imprint Magical Properties has ridden high through this era, breaking down the sonic walls of normality and previously charted territory. Each release on the label draws together colour schemes from the outer regions of the dance world, extending Daedelus’ legacy while introducing new talent along the way. YAYAYA of Holland is the newest group to join forces with Magical Properties, scheduled to launch the self-titled full length on February 23, 2018. A vinyl version of YAYAYA will take form in the months to follow.

We’re told that “what separates YAYAYA from many other electronic albums is its morphing state of forms and how that alteration paces from track to track.”

After the group sent Daedelus a cache of demos last year, they all met up in the London to discuss a potential bridge for releasing their music. Kinship formed shortly after, planting the seeds for this year’s YAYAYA LP and many more albums to follow. As the group describe, “We met Daedelus on his Europe tour in London. While he was out here, we visited an exhibition together that displayed the history of recording sound. This is where we felt a genuine click with Daedelus and realized it was all coming together for us.”

Hadi ‘Master’

Toronto-based label and collective Forth is set to drop its debut release on February 20.

The release, a VA featuring cuts from Ciel, Gingy, Hadi, Joel Eel, Kontravoid, and R, looks to the Forth’s warehouse beginnings—the collective started out throwing DIY style raves in Toronto—for its inspiration, touching on gritty, mind-bending techno, industrial, and EBM across six furious cuts.

In support of the release, Forth has offered up a tripped-out cut from Hadi as today’s XLR8R download. Synth-heavy and full of erratic percusion, it’s a track built for the early hours of a sweaty rave and will undoubtedly swirl some minds in the process.

You can pre-order the release here, with Hadi’s “Master” available via WeTransfer below.

Christopher Ledger Announces Experimental Audio/Visual Label

Next month, Christopher Ledger will kick off his CL Series imprint with a collaboration with Luigi Ranghino, a regular collaborator of Max Loderbauer, Ambiq, and Ricardo Villalobos.

The label’s first outing, Cielo Intonato, which also features a remix from Ion Ludwig, finds Ledger drawing on his work as a painter and visual artist, as well as the ambient and experimental music world. In essence, the CL Series looks to examine the mutual interaction between two complementary artistic practices, where each influence the other simultaneously during the creative process.

You can stream the EP’s stunning opening cut below, along with some questions with Ledger.

How was 2017 for you?

2017 was a very nice year, I’ve joined the GOA Club family in Rome as resident for their parties, played a lot of great shows abroad, and spent most of my time painting, drawing and making music.

Can you explain CL Series?

CL Series is new multidisciplinary platform that I created to examine the simultaneous interaction between music and visual art. The releases will come as the result of a synaesthetic process between these two artistic practices.

Although CL Series is departure from your more known dancefloor sounds, is there a plan to present this project live?

At the moment, all I can say is that I’m planning live performances both solo as well as with the ensemble. These performances will come in addition to my DJ sets. And of course, I won’t be stepping away from the dancefloor…CL Series offers me an additional, independent platform to give voice to a wider variety of my artistic interests and outputs.

What can we expect from CL Series in the future?

What’s so exciting about this project is that there are many different directions we can go. I’m particularly excited about the concept I’m working on for future CL Series events, to be held in atypical spaces which will immerse the audience in multi sensory artwork.

Dub Taylor (a.k.a Tigerskin) Returns with New Full-Length

Alex Krüger (a.k.a Dub Taylor) will release a new album on Dirt Crew Recordings.

An artist as versatile as Alex Krüger is a rare find these days. Not only has he released numerous EPs and albums as Tigerskin or Korsakow since the mid-’90s, he’s also been on the forefront of the “dub techno” movement since 1999 with outings on classic labels such as Raum…Musik, Force Tracks, and 3B/ United States of Mars. Now, 10 years after his last album on Opossum Recordings, Krüger is back with this well-crafted genre-bending full-length Caves & Cages. From deep techno cuts through rippling ambient excursions to funky reggae-infused live jams with Haushausen, this work is “yet another milestone in the creative bubble Alex lives in,” the label explains.

A predominantly analogue producer, Krüger recorded most sounds for Caves & Cages on his modular synths and vintage gear at Organic Domain during 2017 and early 2018. Throughout the album, tension ebbs and flows effortlessly via syncopated subs, analogue improvisation, subtle chord stabs, and sustained swells interspersed with textured field and home recordings.

Beshken ‘Fruits’

Originally trained as a jazz guitarist, Beshken first became interested in dance music while DJing house parties and clubs in Los Angeles. Heavily influenced by the city’s rich, colorful, and diverse sounds, he has cultured his identity, ideology, and musical dexterity with constant artistic and introspective development. Now based in Brooklyn, 21-year-old Ben Shirken creates a lush and effervescent atmosphere of sound by blending elements of electronic music, jazz, and indie rock. His live show blends electronic and organic elements with custom visuals to create an audio/visual experience, one that reflects his curiosity to combine real-world sounds with digital elements.

His latest work is “Fruits,” a track that reveals the toxicity often masked by normalcy. It’s inspired by a trip to Rome where Shirken walked through a square called the Campo De’ Fiori, which translates to “Field of Flowers.” Active as a cultural centre for over 600 years, the square is now a bustling marketplace but was once used for public executions. “I captured the sounds of a stall owner chopping fruits and vegetables, a man pushing a shopping cart full of different meats and cheeses, and a street performer singing an ominous opera,” he explains. “Listening to “Fruits” transports me back to that summer day in Rome. Things that are seemingly normal—a popular open-air market—can have hidden, evil contexts. We go about our days often unaware of what is buried underneath the field of flowers.”

You can grab “Fruits” now via the WeTransfer button below.
