bod [包家巷] ‘Orchestra of the Frozen State [冰国乐队]’

LA-based Chinese American artist bod [包家巷] makes haunting, thought-provoking, and downright trippy sound experiments. bod’s forthcoming release on rising label Pastel Voids—the label responsible for Chela Una’s XLR8R download “Serotonin Flux“—is a double-sided, limited edition tape titled Orchestra of the Frozen State—each side is also made available as a digital download.

Of the release, bod had this to say:

“The orchestra of the frozen state is the machine, my laptop. It belongs to my past in my estrangement as well as the functions of this estrangement, with what little money my mother had that she spent on my classical training. More often than most kids in the hood, I found myself in a suit, on a stage, in front of a bunch of rich people. Now more often than not, I find myself longing to be there again, a component of a larger system that I could blindly spew my technique into without regard to its meaning.

I made this tape because I don’t know who I am. I understand that this is a common problem, and that most people solve it by looking into their pasts, or connecting with their family, or something. None of these are viable, or possible really. I don’t believe I was ever meant to become a doctor and support family. I can’t see myself moving weight from one city in Arizona to another. I fucked up my voice with smoking so I can’t sing in choir anymore.”

You can download side b in full via WeTransfer below, with the cassette and side a available via Pastel Voids Bandcamp.

20 Questions: Baba Stiltz

Swedish musician Baba Stiltz dares to be different. Keeping up with his genre-bashing music over recent years has been just as enjoyable as consuming it. His most recent release dropped on Stockholm’s Studio Barnhus—the Is Everything EP, a record that hints at his maverick stance. Comfortably hopping from deep house to R&B and touching on all sorts in-between, it seems that he will rule no possibilities out.

Delve a little deeper with Stiltz and this is confirmed. Under the guise of The Betlehem Beard Corporation, a project that he toyed with during his teens, he set his hand to folk, while alongside rapper Yung Lean he’s been responsible for some irresistible hip-hop beats (not to forget his divergent solo productions away from Studio Barnhus, on the likes of The Trilogy Tapes, Public Possession and Unknown To The Unknown). The Swede’s talents show no end and his discography now spans the best part of a decade, yet he’s still only 23. We dialed up Baba Stiltz with 20 questions, to find out more about the man behind the music.

1. Where were you born and raised?
I was born in Stockholm and raised in Sweden and the US.

2. Where do you base yourself now and why?
Stockholm is my base for now. It’s good, my friends live here and also my siblings.

3. You come from a dancing background–do you still dance? If not, do you miss it?
No more dancing and I don’t miss it, unfortunately. It was six long years of my life that I appreciate but don’t miss.

4. How do you think your background in dance influences the music you make today?
No idea really. In some ways, probably. I like to get down.

5. Besides music, what are your biggest interests and hobbies?
Watching people play video games, cooking, and wine. Also moisturizers, different types of smells, etc.

6. What was the last book you read?
“Tripprapporter” by Tone Schunnesson, a great author from Stockholm.

7. How would you describe yourself in three words?
This. Is. It.

8. What do you doodle when you doodle?
Batman.

9. What was the first record you bought?
Either Get Rich or Die Tryin’ or a Bright Eyes record.

10. What was the last record that you listened to?
The new Migos record. It’s a very special record. “Slippery” is my favourite track.

11. The wealth of styles and the quantity of your output indicates you’re a very creative individual. Where do your ideas come from?
I have a lot of time! This is all I do so it’s basically just keep busy. So ideas just come and go. Let it happen, you know.

12. What is your studio setup today? Where is your studio?
These are all secret things I cannot talk about. But I can say that I try my best to be able to work on any setup available. It’s not about what you use, so…

13. Do you produce in day or night?
I work in the day. I find it better that way. Early mornings as well.

14. If you had to give one tip to an aspiring producer, what would it be?
Learn! And make sure it’s fun.

15. How do you approach music making: do most of your tracks come from jamming or are they conceptualized before you go to the studio?
There is never a way of telling. It’s always different. I’m not a robot yet.

16. What’s your daily routine like with making music?
Go to the studio around 08:00, drink coffee and listen to a record. And then start working, until evening.

17. Your latest release, Is Everything, follows a string of diverse releases–from experimental house to rap. What determines the music you make?
Music is everything. so I think it makes sense to do anything.

18. Do you think there is a common thread to the music that you make?
It’s all by me!

19. Do you have a vision in your head of where you want to be, musically speaking?
Yes, but that too is something I cannot talk about at the moment…although I have been “singing” and “writing lyrics.” Vision is good. I have it.

20. What’s the first thing you’ll do after answering these questions?
Brush my hair!

D’Julz Celebrates 20 Years of ‘Bass Culture’

Julien Veniel (a.k.a D’Julz) will soon proudly celebrate 20 years of his Bass Culture residency at Rex Club, Paris by inviting five special guests to join him over six parties.

Veniel created Bass Culture in 1997 out of his frustration with the Paris scene. The commercial side of French touch was taking over the city’s clubs and he was “missing the darker and dubbier side of house, acid house, and deeper techno.” Intent on bringing variety and depth back to Paris’ nightlife, he invited the raw and original sounds of artists who had caught his attention on his travels to play with him at Bass Culture. Terry Francis, Kenny Hawkes, Doc Martin, and Josh Wink all became staple guests at the night for the first 10 years of the parties existence.

20 years on and Bass Culture is still standing strong. More recent guests like Mr G, Sonja Moonear, Carl Craig, Daniel Bell, Octave One, Praslea, Ryan Elliot, Seth Troxler.

Stream Tin Man’s New Acid-Infused LP in Full

Johannes Auvinen (a.k.a Tin Man) has a new acid-focused LP on the way.

Dripping Acid is said to be Auvinen’s “most ambitious” project to date, comprised of six 12”s of new acid compositions. While the brittle machine-music of ‘80s Chicago is the blueprint of any acid track, Dripping Acid refrains from revivalism; instead, it “looks forward” as it “harnesses the 303’s psychedelic potential,” according to Global A, the label behind the release.

The album comes following a number of collaborations with artists such as Cassegrain, John Tejada and, most recently, Gunnar Haslam, with whom here released the Valere Aude collaborative album as Romans.

Repitch Celebrates 5th Anniversary with Compilation

Repitch Recordings will celebrate five years with a compilation.

Techno imprint Repitch is run by Berlin-based Italians Shapednoise, Ascion and D. Carbone. In celebration of its fifth anniversary, the label heads have pulled together a selection of former contributors and producers who have inspired them over the years, for a heavyweight 16-track compilation.

The release’s intentionally ambivalent title, Dys Functional Electronic Music, is a nod to Repitch’s musical identity, “often deviating from norms or distancing itself from common club functionalism.” Aside from a handful of contributions from the label owners, regulars Mike Parker, Gaja, AnD, and Sote also chime in. Pinch and The Zenker Brothers offer some dub-infused atmospherics, alongside cuts from Skudge and Nuel.

Watch a Wild New Video from IC3PEAK

Moscow electronic duo IC3PEAK—made up of Nick and Nastya, two “audio-visual terrorists—follow last year’s self-released debut with new single, “Kawaii Warrior,” released via US-label Manimal (Yoko Ono, Bat for Lashes, Warpaint).

Their unique brand of sonic experimentation and charisma channels artists like Grimes, Die Antwoord, and Bjork, whilst simultaneously looking into the future. For the duo, “the beauty is in the struggle to create new symbols and meanings,” and the latest single explores “female representation, as a woman now is seen both independent and still aching for love. It speaks out about human nature—which is actually much more complicated—and wishing to get closer to what’s hidden inside of our minds: from the darkness to the light.”

The single arrives with a video filmed by IC3PEAK in a forbidden, abandoned space that was used for USSR echolocation experiments. The video, which you can watch via the player below, follows the duo as they traverse through the abandoned, bunker-like space and shows “a snippet of an H+ party in a dystopian future.”
