Lawrence Announces New LP

Peter M. Kersten (a.k.a Lawrence) has announced the release of a forthcoming full-length LP expected to land in record shops and online this April via Mule Musiq. The album is titled Yoyogi Park, and the 10-track album succeeds 2009’s Until Then, Goodbye and 2014’s A Day in The Life—the first two parts of Karsten’s album trilogy on Mule Musiq. This latest effort sees the Dial boss return to the ambient and modern classical sounds present in the two aforementioned works, and includes both new and previously issued cuts like 2014’s “Nowhere Is A Place.” As reported by RA, the title of the upcoming project is borrowed from one of the biggest parks in the city of Tokyo.

The forthcoming album will be available in late April, as a 10-track CD and an eight-track double-vinyl, before seeing release digitally, a few weeks later.

Dystopian Announces New EP from Drumcell

LA native Moe Espinosa (a.k.a Drumcell) will be making his debut on Dystopian—the imprint co-founded and co-headed by Rødhåd—with a new 12-inch landing this March. Named Absence Of Appropriate Effect, the 3-track record succeeds the Söhne Der Erde EP, Rødhåd’s own release on the imprint that landed early last December. The Absence Of Appropriate Effect EP marks a departure for the Berlin label who, aside from Rødhåd, has generally only seen releases from close Dystopian affiliates of the likes of Recondite and Alex. Podcast 425: Samuel Kerridge

Samuel Kerridge has always operated on the fringes of electronic music. Even when it comes to techno—the genre into which he can most comfortably be placed—Kerridge sounds like an outlier, a renegade producer who dismantles any preconceived notions of electronic music, placing them in an incinerator before piecing it all back together in unorthodox, but highly rewarding, way.

Growing up on a regime of unlicensed raves and record stores, Kerridge’s journey has been one of pure sonic exploration, taking him from house, jungle, and drum & bass to experimental rock and the physical, noise-infused soundscapes in which he currently operates. Kerridge’s third full-length album, Fatal Light Attraction, was released last week on Regis’ Downwards label, which was also the home for his first album and a handful of other appearances. The album stems from a performance at last year’s edition of Berlin Atonal where Kerridge worked with Andrej Boleslavský and Mária Júdová on a system of live coding that responded in real time to the audio source—the majority of which was recorded with custom built instruments and synthesizers. It’s powerful, brutalist music that is built to challenge its listens, as well as move their body and minds.

How and where was the mix recorded? How did you put this mix together?
It was recorded in Berlin using a Rane MP2016 & XP2016 mixer, two Technic 1210’s, and two Pioneer CDJs

How long did you think about the mix before you actually started recording?
A couple of days. There’s an abundance of dancefloor-orientated podcasts, and I tried to steer away from that because you go to a club for that experience. It can be challenging trying to fit varied music into a 60 minute window.

How did you select the specific tracks you wanted to include?
I selected a few records that were key markers and then improvised. I wouldn’t want it to come across as too robotic.

What kind of feel were you going for on this mix?
Death and glory!

How does this mix compare with what we would hear from you in a club or festival?
Well, theres a time and place for everything. There are not too many clubs in the world where this podcast would work at 4am. But elements of the mix can translate across. Of course, I want people to have a good time, I stick to my principles and try to bring something new to the table.

What else has 2016 got in store for you?
Fatal Light Attraction has just been released via Downwards. “The Mysterious Other” is an A/V collaborative works with Taylor Burch (DVA Damas & Tropic of Cancer) that will hopefully see more daylight. I plan to tour the US/Canada between May and July, then from there who knows whats around the corner I’ll take it as it comes.

Q&A: Antigone Returns to Token with New EP

Antonin Jeanson (a.k.a Antigone) has announced the release of an upcoming EP landing next month via Token Records. Named Saudade, the record follows the Cantor Dust EP—Antonin’s popular seven-track double-record that saw release in May of last year—marking his debut on the Belgian imprint. The French artist has recently been at the forefront of the techno scene with a recently announced collaborative EP alongside friend and producer François X, titled We Move As One, scheduled for release later this month via Dement3d Records.

Saudade is set to land via Token on March 11, 2016. To learn more about how it came about, we spoke with Token label head, Kr!z. 

This will actually be the Antigone’s second release on Token, succeeding his successful debut double EP, Cantor Dust. What is it about his work that you find fits so nicely with the vision of the label? 
I think he has a unique sound. I could already hear it when I discovered his music in 2013, and since then I feel he’s grown and really developed a sound of his own. To my ear it sounds fresh. You can hear he knows where techno is coming from; he uses classic elements, but he made them his own and took it to the next level. Plus, he’s not just a one-trick pony: He likes to experiment and push himself. These are all characteristics I’m looking for when signing artists. I feel everyone on Token has it and that their music proves it.

Regrettably, after your recent accident, Token had to put on the brakes after during a period where it was putting out records regularly, and hosting label showcases all over Europe. How does it feel to be back to work and take the label back on the road? 
It feels great to be back. I’m still not fully recovered, so traveling & DJing is not that easy at the moment, but it just feels incredible to be out there again and play music to people. The accident was just under five months ago, and, even though that’s a while ago, my doctors say my progress has been astonishingly fast. So, when I think about it, I can only feel lucky, not only that I’m still alive, but that I can perform again.

Things are looking great for the label too. In a way, I just want to pick it up where I left it. I have so many great records planned this year, so I’m excited to get all this music out. And also I’m looking ahead to 2017 already, when Token will turn 10 years old.

The Token nights prove to be some of the best techno events all around Europe. Can you unveil some of the upcoming dates and the line up ?
For the next two months, we have showcases planned in France, UK, Belgium, Georgia and Denmark. Here are the details:

M.A.D! “Mind!”

Hailing from a town near Barcelona, the fresh trio known as M.A.D! (Mutually Assured Distortion) is set to release a five-track EP titled This & These on February 12 via the Spanish music label Neonized Records.

Originally starting off its musical career with a more shoegaze, post-rock vibe, the trio moved towards a unique, smart, and hardware-driven sound. Being experienced live performers, the group’s stage presence, energy, and overall musical ability has consistently amazed audiences. The EP also features remixes from Spanish techno artist Clip and the magnetic house master Octo Octa.

Ahead of the release of This & These, these three musicians have graciously agreed to offer up the EP cut “Mind!” as today’s XLR8R download. Kicking off with a gentle house fortitude, the sparse guitar riffs and piano chords gradually build into a full-blown jam up until the two-minute marker. Once taking a step back, the rest of the track continues to rise as the wicked and delightfully tangled hardware arrangements take the wheel and drive the track towards the dancefloor.

Betonkust and Palmbomen II Set to Release Collaborative EP; Stream a Track Now

Following the release of his acclaimed self-titled LP, Dutch producer Kai Hugo (a.k.a Palmbomen II) has teamed up with his buddy Betonkust for a new collaborative EP Center Parcs on the Vancouver label 1080p.

A graduate of the Red Bull Music Academy, Hugo is currently stationed in Los Angeles. Following the release of his LP, he took it upon himself to direct his own cryptic and impressionable music video series with VHS/80s inspired aesthetics that perfectly match his dusty, tropical, and laved analogue sound (watch the series here). While touring across Europe, Hugo and fellow Dutch producer Bekonkust spent a rainy weekend at a holiday park called ‘Center Parcs De Eemhof’ in The Netherlands to record this instinctive and astral undertaking.

Listen to Kevin Arnemann’s New EP on Taped Artifact

Kevin Arnemann is the co-founder of a deep and mingling techno label out of Amsterdam called Taped Artifact. Alongside his label partner Daan Kemp, the two have worked out a stunningly solid vision for the type of sound that they want to represent on the label, including the release of Arnemann’s first EP titled Lumière, and a follow up EP by Gauss Ltd. co-owner and Finale Sessions artist Natan H. Now Arnemann is back on Taped Artifact with a satisfyingly cavernous release titled Concealed.

This new EP by Arnemann is a deep and firmly rooted techno record that is hugely expansive, with smeared pads and echoing synths stretching out in all directions over the course of three tracks. The title track incorporates drums that rumble throughout, with plenty of lo-fi atmospherics layered over the top. “Exposed” is an insular and heady house roller, this time with dubbed-out chords that flesh into a bumpy groove. The release rounds off with the track “19_Eleven,” which burrows deep within the underground with a soft but driving drum-kit, while a heavy autumnal fog with lingering pads traps you in Arnemann’s bleak-yet-inviting world.

With all the delirious hype around 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens, you’d be forgiven for not wanting to hear anything about the infamous series for several years. However, Resident Advisor is reporting that a compilation of Star Wars-inspired electronic tracks is due to land later this month. Mega-producer Rick Rubin (whose fingerprints are all over music from the likes of the Beastie Boys, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Jay Z) has curated Star Wars Headspace: a collection of 15 tracks that sample audio from the Star Wars films. Notable artists to contribute works include Flying Lotus with “R2 Where R U?” and Rustie with “EWOK PUMPP,” plus Shlohmo, Baauer, Bonobo, Claude VonStroke, and Röyksopp.
