Moodymann to Mix Next Installment of DJ-Kicks

Detroit staple Moodymann has been tapped to deliver the year’s first DJ-Kicks mix for !K7. “Rather than serving up ridiculously rare or hard-to-find records, he instead focuses on creating a libidinous, blues-drenched mood that takes in heartbreaking soul, gorgeous hip-hop, and love-fuelled house,” a press release states. “In addition to cuts from his own creative circle, the mix features 11 exclusive Moodymann edits. Like everything Kenny Dixon Jr. touches, DJ-Kicks showcases the taste, skill, and soul of a dance music original.”

Moodymann’s contribution to the series follows previous installments from Actress and DJ Koze and is set to see an official release on February 19. Until then, its artwork and tracklist can be viewed below.

Portable Teases Album for !K7

Alan Abrahams will deliver a new LP under his Portable alias via the well-established !K7 label. “I was thrilled to be able to sign Alan and his Portable moniker to !K7,” says Will Saul, who heads up A&R for the outpost. “His music has a truly timeless and instantly recognizable quality which, when combined with thought-provoking songwriting and such a powerful voice, you have something really special and totally unique.”

Abrahams, who also operates as Bodycode, has previously released on Perlon, Live at Robert Johnson, and his own Süd Electronic imprint. Details on the forthcoming album are scant, but listen back to his 2014 XLR8R podcast here. (via Resident Advisor)

Tiga Announces New No Fantasy Required LP

Montreal Native Tiga has a new album dropping via Ninja Tune sub-label, Counter Records, on March 4.

No Fantasy Required will be the Turbo Recordings‘ label-head third LP, concluding “a trilogy of albums.” The full-length has also been described in a press release as “a masterwork of forward-listening insanity.”

The LP features 11 tracks in total with collaborations from: Matthew Dear, Hudson Mohawke, Scissor Sisters’ Jake Shears, one-half of Paranoid London and additional artists.

Nuits Sonores Announces Daytime Curators

Following on from the success of last year’s scheme, the 14th edition of the festival will hand over control of part of its programming to three artists they believe embody the spirit of Nuits Sonores.

Danilo Plessow (a.k.a. Motor City Drum Ensemble) will take the reigns on the first of the NS Days, which runs on Thursday May 5, followed by Godfather of French techno Laurent Garnier the day after, and Seth Troxler on the Saturday. With the festival’s continuing focus on the Confluence area of Lyon, the events will take place in La Sucrière, an exhibition space and former factory.

The festival has also announced that, following former editions that paired with Warsaw, Brussels, Tokyo, New York and Glasgow, Nuits Sonores will be welcoming bands, cultural activists and chefs from Seoul. Also, parents will be pleased to hear about the return of Mini Sonore — a part of the festival that seeks to immerse children in its ideals, through audiovisual features which they might not otherwise have the opportunity to interact with.

Koett “Slow Run”

Russian producer Aleksander Tochilkin (a.k.a Koett) is set to release his second full-length LP, Thaw, on February 5 via the Amsterdam-based music label Atomnation. Koett is counted among the many distinguished electronic artists that have emerged from the mega-state in recent years, such as Pixelord, Monokle, LongArm, Lapti, and DZA.

Recorded on a TR-808, Yahama DX-7, and a Polyvox (an old Soviet replica of the Moog), Thaw is the follow up of Koett’s well received debut LP, Golden Peak, which was released via Atomnation in 2013. Based in the sunny southern part of Russia close to the Black Sea and Georgia, Tochilkin’s imaginary travels to the north of Russia inspired him to record his new LP.

“I always wanted to make a journey to the North, going to places where there are endless steppes and many kilometers of taiga stretches, where a man and his ego are simply nothing in comparison with nature. For me this album is some kind of journey through the places where I sometimes dream to go.”

Ahead of the release, Koett has graciously offered up one of his album cuts as today’s XLR8R download. The fifth track on the album, “Slow Run,” is a gritty, arenose, club-ready burner with a steady house music fortitude, fierce synth progressions, and haunting piano riffs.

Sei A Readies New Album on Aus Music

London-via-Glasgow artist Andy Graham (aka Sei A) has a new album dropping via Aus Music titled: Space In Your Mind. His latest effort will feature 10 tracks and is scheduled for release on March 18.

Space In Your Mind precedes the Scottish artist’s last two full-lengths: Editing Shadows released on Missive Music in 2009 and White Rainbow on Turbo Recordings in 2010.

Montreal to Host Red Bull Music Academy 2016

This coming autumn, Red Bull Music Academy will make its first full return to Canada since the 2007 edition in Toronto when it sets up shop in the epicenter of the country’s artistic experimentalism, Montreal. The month-long program will include a number of various concerts, club nights, exhibitions, and talks with pioneering figures of the music world.

Widely recognized as a global institution committed to fostering creativity in music, RBMA has touched down in a different host city every year since 1998. Since the program’s inception, it has churned out an array of artists who have gone on to become the music world’s leading forces. On that list of alumni are names such as Flying Lotus, Hudson Mohawke, Nina Kraviz, Evian Christ, Mumdance, Natalia Lafourcade, Jamie Woon, Katy B and Jackmaster.

Starting on January 18, music makers from across the globe are invited to apply for RBMA’s 2016 edition. The application form can be downloaded from the Academy website and must be mailed in by March 7, along with a CD of recorded material by each applicant. The RBMA jury will then select a group of participants from the submitted applications.

Stream a Track from Alex Smoke’s Forthcoming ‘Love Over Will’ LP

Giving us taste of his upcoming album Love Over Will, set to be released on January 22 via R&S Records, Alex Menzies (a.k.a. Alex Smoke) has shared the track “Manacles.” Menzies has been hard at work constructing this album in his Glasgow studio—and during this recording process back in late June of last year, XLR8R was fortunate enough to receive an hour of gorgeous, mostly ambient music from Alex Smoke as part of our weekly podcast series. His set managed to reach the number four spot in our Best Podcasts of 2015 review, which can be streamed here.

As with his 2011 release under the Wraetlic guise, Love Over Will sees Menzies creating a palette of otherworldly strings, distortion, clicks and synths, which act as a bed for his voice. You can stream the album cut “Manacles” in full below.

Robert Hood Lines Up Three EPs and an Album on Dekmantel

Established techno producer, Robert Hood, has announced the release of three new EPs and an album, landing on Dekmantel this year. The first part of the series titled: Paradygm Shift Vol 1, is launching as early as next month.

When discussing the incentive behind the new project, Hood has stated:”The idea behind Paradygm Shift is similar to a shift in our focus. We can become so complacent; we are so comfortable with our surroundings, I think this is the time for electronic music to find a new mindset.” He goes into more details saying: “I have been busy with my Floorplan alias and reintroducing Monobox over the years, but at the same time I felt it necessary to reiterate Robert Hood as an electronic music artist who is bringing minimalism back in the forefront, and not to get lost in the melody. I want to get back to the simple repetitive programming that I’m known for, and to me it was returning to that, but shifting the listeners’ focus and not staying on this plane like we are used to.”
