Piknic Electronik Adds Sydney and Santiago to its 2016 Season

Having established its goal of adding ten cities to its program over the next five years, The Piknic Electronik International Development Plan has unsurprisingly made further steps towards its objective by adding Santiago (its first location in South America) and an additional Australian city, Sydney, to its unbeatable open air event series. Moving away from the chill that engulfs its home city of Montreal this time of year and migrating towards the southern hemisphere to wait out the cold, multiple Piknic Electronik events will take place in Sydney, Dubai, Santiago, and Melborne between December 19 – April 3.

To kick off things off, the first Piknic Electronik event of 2016 will take place in Sydney on January 10 with performances from Simon Caldwell, Cassete, and Detroit dignitary Kevin Saunderson who will then head down south to Melbourne the following weekend with local Aussie artists Matt Radovich and Myles Mac to fully christen the new season.

You can learn more about each event by visiting Piknic Electronik’s website and keep yourself posted on the upcoming events by liking the Facebook event pages below.

Watch the Final Installment of Palmbomen II’s Music Video Series

Netherlands musician Kai Hugo (aka Palmbomen II) has today released the final installment of music video series for his self-titled debut album on Tim Sweeney’s Beats In Space Records. A graduate of Red Bull Music Academy, the Dutch producer has settled down in Los Angeles, taking it upon himself to personally direct each chapter of his fantastic and arcane music video series.

Binge watching old VHS tapes of the X-Files while recording his album and awaiting his visa to the United States, the name of each track on the album is named after various minor characters from the classic TV show. Cryptic and impressionable, the series’ VHS/80s inspired aesthetics perfectly match that of Palmbomen II’s dusty, tropical, and laved analogue sound. You can watch his latest music video for the track “John Lee Roche” in the player above and view the rest of the series below. You can check out Palmbomen II’s self-titled debut by going to his Bandcamp page here.

Echologist Announces New EP

Brendon Moeller (a.k.a. Echologist) has produced the third release to be put out by Christian Gerlach’s Lanthan.audio.

Established earlier this year, Lanthan.audio has put out EPs by Edit Select and Deepbass, and will kick off 2016 with a record by Echologist. The New York-based producer of South African heritage has recently released on the likes of Non Series, Mord and Planet Rouge, and is known for his dub techno trips, also producing under a handful of aliases such as Beat Pharmacy and Mono Blanco. Aside from his two original productions, title track “Dead Men Tell No Tales” gets the remix treatment by Antonio Ruscito, and a familiar face to the label, Deepbass.

Check out snippets from the EP below.

Locked Groove Announces New EP

Following on from a release on Life and Death, as well as a collaboration with Mind Against for Scuba’s Hotflush Recordings earlier this year, Locked Groove returns to his own Locked Groove Records with End/Scherzo, the label’s third release. According to the imprint, listeners should expect “an intense and driving two tracker.”

End/Scherzo will be available on digital and physical formats from December 11, and can be pre-ordered at Bleep and Decks. Also, for the first time, the two earlier Locked Groove Records EPs are being made available digitally at Beatport.

Palms Trax Returns to Dekmantel; Streams Clips

Red Bull Music Academy

Ascendent Berlin-based producer Palms Trax (a.k.a. Jay Donaldson) returns to Dekmantel in early 2016 with a new EP, High Point on Low Ground. Donaldson debuted on Lobster Theremin back in 2013, helping to get the young London imprint off the ground. His upcoming three-tracker follows this year’s In Gold EP for the Dutch tastemakers, which swiftly sold out and will see a repress in January thanks to opportunistic Discogs prices.

As described in the accompanying write-up to High Point on Low Ground, “The title track blazes a beaten-up vocal snippet over stanked-out synths, stretched to a breaking point across a low-riding bass line. A stabbing Moroder-esque bass line dominates ‘Cloud City’, while ‘Paws’ equals pure and raw broken-beat bliss with a pinch of acid.” Stream clips of all three tracks below before the record drops on January 25.

Konkret Cutz “ESLO”

Tristan Fabes and Charlie Gehant, who make up the Anglo-French duo Konkret Cutz, banded together in 2014, moved to Berlin, and plunged into an what is now an ongoing electronic musical expedition. Starting off with a number of remixes and hosting shows on a variety of radio stations and podcasts, the listening community has slowly but surely started to realize the strength and nattiness of Konkret Cutz’ production and mixing ability. Touring all over France, The UK, and Germany, the duo has caught the attention of a handful of labels with forthcoming EPs on Not An Animal, Tunnyl, and Man Power‘s imprint, LBL.

Having released it’s debut EP The Raumon People Get Real’s imprint Join Our Club earlier this year, Konkret Cutz’s sound and trajectory shows an entirely upward trend. With a handful of remixes and EPs already in the works for 2016, it seems likely that we will be seeing (and listening to) more from Fabes and Gehant. Offered up today as an exclusive XLR8R download is the Konkret Cutz track “ESLO,” which features a soulful, abrading groove that is followed up by low, wide, and particulate synth line that is precisely tuned and automated, eager for dancefloor adoption.

You can download “ESLO” for free in the player below and be sure to check out more from Konkret Cutz by visiting their Soundcloud page.

Thomass Jackson “Simon (Alternate Arpped Version)”

Hailing from Argentina and currently residing in Mexico, DJ and producer Thomass Jackson has delivered an exclusive version of his track “Simon” as one of today’s XLR8R downloads. Having previously released records through imprints such as Gomma and Correspondant, Jackson’s most recent EP, Think People, was released on the Marseille-based label La dame Noir—who pride themselves on providing their listeners with a taste of “the darkest side of disco.” The three-track EP includes remixes from Golden Bug and A&N for a collection of stormy grooves that are ideal for any haunting and smoky dancefloor experiences.

“Simon (Alternate Arpped Version)” kicks off with an arrangement of disorienting alien-like synths that burst into a concrete drum arrangement and chunky bassline, before various synth compositions dip in and out of the track in beautiful fashion. You can download the track for free via the player below and be sure to check out more from Thomass Jackson by visiting his Soundcloud page here.

Romanian Fundraiser for the Families of the Recent Bucharest Nightclub Fire

This holiday season, XLR8R is partnering up with the women in music industry network shesaid.so and LA party series Dig Deeper to put together an event that gives back to the Romanian community. The one-night affair will help raise money for the families that were affected by the fire that broke out at a concert in Bucharest, Romania. You can read about the terrible nightclub tragedy by going here.

The night will feature DJ sets from Dig Deeper founders/residents MASHA & Alison Swing, a live performance from Pegasus Warning, house aficionado Urulu and a special guest. The event will run from 10 pm to 2 am on Thursday, December 10 at On The Rox in Los Angeles with a suggested donation of $20—any donation is welcomed (100% of proceeds go to Romania). No one is turned away for the lack of funds.

If you can’t make it to the event but still feel obliged to donate to this worthy cause, feel free to contribute online via Paypal.

The Factory: Riverside Studios

Amongst the cobblestone walkways and beautifully bleak cityscape of Berlin, you will find a plethora of expression from street art to fashion, and of course, music. The raw, emotive undercurrents that permeate deep beneath the city continues to drive the subculture from its depths, perpetuating Berlin as one of the most influential cities for electronic music today, attracting international artists and aficionados alike. Contributing to this mellifluous movement is Riverside Studios, a unique compound in Kreuzberg that is redefining the notion of Berlin’s creative spaces by cultivating a comprehensive ecosystem to support exceptional artists for collaborative endeavors.

In this episode of The Factory, XLR8R takes an exclusive tour of Riverside Studios and sits down with managing partners, Martin Eyerer and Tassilo Ippenberger, to learn more about the studio’s origins, the evolution of the space through its collaborative initiatives, and how artists are “making waves” within the diverse music scene of Berlin.
