Kode9 Readies Debut Album on Hyperdub

Kode9 (a.k.a. Steve Goodman) will deliver his debut solo album, Nothing, via his own Hyperdub label this coming November. According to a press release, the LP “throws horror soundtracks, sampled library records, and J-pop into a no-man’s land between grime, early dubstep, and Chicago footwork.” And, as Resident Advisor notes, the influence of the late Stephen Samuel Gordon (a.k.a. The Spaceape) is evident throughout. Kode9 released two collaborative albums with Gordon before his passing in 2014, which is memorialized by nine minutes of silence on closing track “Nothing Lasts Forever.”

RIONEGRO Announce Self-Titled Debut Album

RIONEGRO is the debut album from a trio of Cómeme all-stars (Matias Aguayo, Sano, and Gladkazuka), with the three joining forces for a session of nocturnal tropical psychedelia. The LP was recorded in the mountains of Medellin, Colombia, and was finished in the District Union (Aguayo’s studio) in Berlin.

The project’s musical spirit was initiated by Sano, who played the rhythms of salsa, descarga, boogaloo, merengue, etc., utitilizing the machines of today. Recordings were made during long lasting, late-night jams, in-and-around the house (that’s why you can sometimes hear barking dogs and other background noises on the record).

RIONEGRO is scheduled for an October 30 release.

Stream a Track from the New Ctrls EP

Ctrls is an artist somewhat indivisible from Token. All six of his EPs have come out via the label, melding turbo-charged rhythms with gritten, celestial synth-work. It therefore comes as no surprise that his latest Two Worlds EP is also scheduled for release via the Belgian imprint.

Ahead of the EP’s September 11 release, XLR8R spoke briefly with Ctrls to learn more about the release, with title track “Two Worlds” streamable in full below.

What was the influence behind Two Worlds? This is not your typical style—what sparked your decision to go in a more atmospheric direction?
My primary influences were people who are better traditional musicians then I am. It made me want to try my hand at something sort of orchestral, but keep the cold future feel that I like. I’ve written some atmospheric stuff before, and I have wanted to work that into Ctrls since the beginning. But I’ve been looking for the right way to do it, and I finally found my method. From there I started thinking about different mindsets and the title and artwork followed naturally.

Do you think this is a beginning of a new chapter for you?
You could say that. I’ve learned a lot recently and met some interesting people—so I’m curious to see how it will affect my work.

Token seems to be home for you. How has the label helped guide your career to this point?
Kr!z generally knows exactly what he wants, so every Ctrls release has been worked over in detail. I feel very fortunate to have joined the label just as he was really ramping things up and I feel like I’ve benefitted a lot from his ambitions for the label, both as a DJ and a live performer. He just works really hard with a down to earth attitude, and that’s inspiring and acts as a great motivator.

Mano Le Tough Has a New LP Coming Out Next Month

Niall Mannion (a.k.a Mano Le Tough) has a second album dropping October 30 via Munich imprint Permanent Vacation. This is the latest project from the Berlin-based artist, who’s last album on the label dates back to 2013. It also marks a return to the imprint, with last year’s Tempus three-tracker EP getting released via Mannion’s own Maeve records.

As reported by RA: “the album is described as a further refining of the melodic, pop-inflected house” and will once again feature the artist’s own vocals.

The new full-lentgh will be released as a double-vinyl, a CD and will also include digital formats.

Stream Helena Hauff’s Discreet Desires LP In Full

As we reported back in June, Hamburg techno DJ and hardware fetishist Helena Hauff will deliver her first full-length effort, Discreet Desires, via Werkdiscs/Ninja Tune later this month. Hauff debuted on the label two years ago with the Actio Reactio EP, and—despite a crowded tour schedule—has since turned out releases on Lux Rec, Panzerkreuz, and PAN as one half of Black Sites.

According to the label, Discreet Desires is the “embodiment of Helena’s deep-seated beliefs about music as a radical force and unifying movement,” and reflects her affinity for punk, nu wave, industrial, krautrock, and avant-garde electro—all musical movements “rooted in raw experimentation… in polar opposition to the perfect, polished mainstream.”

Stream a Track From Vito & Druzzi’s New EP

For over a decade, Vito Roccoforte and Gabriel “Druzzi” Andruzzi—who make up the house duo Vito & Druzzi—have been romping on stage and creating wildly popular music for the masses. Starting their musical journey as founding members of the post-punk/indie band The Rapture, who are most well known for their hit “Echoes,” Vito & Druzzi have continuously expanded their sonic spectrum, merging their love for disco, house and post-punk music in a unique fashion. Co-founding their own Brooklyn-based label, Throne of Blood, in 2006 has enabled them to further explore their electronic club potential.

Recently, the duo has created two new tracks that are dancefloor ready, featuring the brilliant vocalist Xavier. Rooted in a 90’s house vibe, “It’s EZ” and “Deep Into It” will easily get you deep into whatever club environment you may find yourself in. Vito & Druzzi also took the time to provide XLR8R with some further insight into their newest release: “It’s still a bit scary to put new music out into the world, no matter how many times we’ve done it. And while there is fear, there is also excitement, anticipation and a real happiness to get share a little of what we do with the world outside of the walls of our Greenpoint studio. I guess that that fear keeps it exciting. And that fear is also part of what draws us to work together and collaborate, getting inspired and surprised. We are extrahappy that this first collaboration with our friend Xavier is seeing the light of day.”

Christopher Rau & Marieu Announce Debut EP as Colours Of Observation

Hailing from Italy and based in Berlin, Christopher Rau and Marieu have combined forces as Colours Of Observation and are set to release their debut EP Sidewalk Romeos via Out Electronic Records on September 28.

The union of Smallville native Christopher Rau and hardware enthusiast Marieu—who makes up one half of the duo The Analogue Cops—has resulted in a crisp combination of deep house and techno that draws much of its influence from the old school. The EP is a bundle of bare boned and unrelenting grooves that are lively and determined from start to finish. This will be the sixteenth release for Berlin-based label Out Electronic Recordings who can certainly take pride in its ability to craft quality underground dance music.

Interview: The Black Madonna

The Black Madonna (a.k.a. Marea Vierge-Noire) has had an incredible string of success in the last couple of years, and it’s clearly due to her hard work and positive disposition. Over three years ago, Chicago’s infamously independent dance-music venue Smart Bar brought The Black Madonna on as a new resident, alongside Derrick Carter and Frankie Knuckles. Not long after that, she became the first creative director in the spot’s three-decade history, bringing a decidedly anti-establishment philosophy to her curatorial style. She’s also renowned for her confident and dynamic DJ sets, as well as her overflowing energy and ability to connect with people both in front of and behind the decks.

The Black Madonna travels the world consistently, performing as a beloved regular and crowd favorite at revered clubs such as Robert Johnson and Panorama Bar. Now in 2015, along with Steve Mizek of Argot, she’s launched Smart Bar’s vinyl imprint, Northside ’82, showcasing the work of the club’s considerable pool of residents—while continuing to tour, as well as helm the club.

In an exclusive interview with XLR8R, the Black Madonna speaks on-camera about her roots in the Midwest underground rave scene, her personal ethos about DJing, and her honeymoon at Panorama Bar. Janet Jackson “JJ03 (MANIK 110 Workout)”

The LA-based artist slows things down for “JJ03,” teasing out Jackson’s vocals on top of a slow, acid chug. Later this month, MANIK will be playing his debut Boiler Room show in Berlin alongside Ellen Alien and the BPitch Recordings crew, followed by a performance at Watergate the next night. Nate Connelly “10 Zero”

Kicking off with soft soundscapes and dripping vocals that amble in the distance, “Zero 10” by Nate Connelly lingers beautifully until building into a thumping and steep, downtempo ballad. After releasing his debut album, A Dream About Being Lost, in 2013, and scoring the Chinese thriller ‘Rigor Mortis,’ Nate Connelly has crafted his second full-length album, Di Skyver, featuring eleven tracks that are ambient and experimental at their core. The album dips between moods with large, aggressive tracks like “Quit Sound” that use heavy intermittent vocal chops, and cuts like the one in question here, “10 Zero,” which adds great depth and mystique to the release. “7842 Fire,” which is featured on the album, has also previously been remixed by UK artist Throwing Snow and can be heard here.
