Sun Glitters “Only You”

Luxembourg producer Sun Glitters (a.k.a. Victor Ferreira) uses boundless reverb and compression to create texture-heavy beats with wistful, phantom vocals, and “Only You”—a cut from his forthcoming Scattered Into Light LP (out on November 26 via Mush)—continues in that unassuming direction. The piece builds on a crackled, prismatic synth and leisurely hip-hop rhythm until Italian siren Sara Cappai (of dream-pop outfit Diverting Duo) starts reciting the song title like a hypnotic haiku. Ferreira manages to unearth an elusive sweet spot left in the wake of chillwave and LA’s instrumental beat scene.

Only You

Sei A Blades of Brazil EP

Sei A‘s Blades of Brazil EP is the third installment of Turbo’s Warehouse Series—a set of releases that is said to concentrate on “futuristic techno at its ruffest and tuffest.” And while the EP’s three tracks do showcase Sei A’s skill with thick, persistent techno kick patterns, they also demonstrate his ability to construct and incorporate loose, dubstep-inspired percussion and rich, atmospheric layers of sound.

The title track is a prime example of such a combination, as the producer sets a detached, melancholic vocal sample against a sturdy kick, keeping the song’s upper stratosphere steadily dynamic. The measured arrangement of “Swoon” likewise begins with a clipped vocal phrase and a muffled drum beat, making the entrance of a booming kick feel massive against the murky soundscape.

“Made of Something” closes out the EP with a slight change of pace, combining steely drum sounds and rhythmic breathing with a bright, evolving synth texture. Sei A dials back the atmospheric vocal layers and ultimately finds a sweet spot that’s also warehouse-appropriate; the track has enough details for headphone listening, but its movements are large enough to hold the dancefloor’s attention.

Lapalux Scores Short Film with New Song; Watch It Now

Aside from his current North American tour, Lapalux has been understandably quiet since dropping his debut full-length, Nostalchic, via Brainfeeder earlier this year. But the UK producer has clearly been keeping himself busy, and has just supplied the first clue to what he’s been working on in recent months, sharing a brand-new track accompanied by a short film from Nick Rutter, the director behind Lapalux’s twisted “Without You” video. Entitled Chrysalis, the piece follows a teenager as he—figuratively and quite literally—falls apart after a past love moves on. To accompany the sometimes-gory story, Lapalux crafted a dark and deep bit of beatwork called “Gold,” which comes topped off by the lushly layered vocals of London singer Jassy Grez. The short film and Lapalux’s new music can be experienced together below.

Moog to Discontinue Little Phatty Synthesizer

Moog has announced it will discontinue production of its Little Phatty analog synthesizer, one of the last units designed with the help of the company’s founder and synthesizer pioneer Bob Moog. Released in 2006 after Bob Moog’s passing, the Little Phatty was actually the first synth whose design was overseen by the company’s current Chief Engineer, Cyril Lance, and marked a large leap forward in Moog’s attempt to seamlessly integrate digital control into its analog sound and circuitry. Although no exact reason has been given as to why the company plans to discontinue production of the Little Phatty (perhaps to make room for the newer Sub Phatty model), they have prepared a nice mini-doc to send the synth on its way. The 12-minute piece focuses on the design process which yielded the Little Phatty, and can be watched below. Full details of the discontinuation—including some special promotional offers—can be found here.

Leyland Kirby to Release New Album as The Stranger via Modern Love

Enigmatic musician Leyland Kirby has released a string of unsettling and brilliant records over the past 15 years, most famously under his The Caretaker alias and as one half of V/Vm. Now, the producer is set to drop the first release in five years from his lesser-known moniker, The Stranger. Kirby’s music as The Stranger has typically adopted a starker, more sinister approach than his other aliases, and seems set to stay the same if his new LP’s first single “Where Are Our Monsters Now, Where Are Our Friends?” is anything to go by. Watching Dead Empires in Decay will be released on October 28 via Modern Love, but before then, a video for the aforementioned single can be viewed in the player below, where the album’s artwork and tracklist can also be found. Download a New Beat Tape from Kid606

Longstanding and wildly prolific producer Kid606 will drop a new LP, Happiness, next month through his own Tigerbeat6 imprint, but before then, has elected to issue a small collection of new beats as a free download. Going Back to Kali Yuga consists of six “freaked-out, moody synth-hop jams,” each full to the brim with restless synth tones and the many twists and turns of Kid606’s finely honed proficiency with unpredictable drum programming. Meant to serve as a teaser for the forthcoming Happiness LP (out October 21), Going Back to Kali Yuga gives an intriguing taste of where the veteran beatsmith’s head has been at recently, and—best yet—can be streamed/downloaded for the price of an email (or more if one so chooses) via the player below.

Download a New Mix from Joey Anderson

With five singles released so far this year and a full-length on the way via Dekmantel, Jersey City resident Joey Anderson has just dropped a brand-new mix. As was detailed in our recent Bubblin’ Up profile of the artist, Anderson is part of a growing wave of veteran NYC/New Jersey house heads who are now establishing themselves as DJ/producers in their own right, a trend that includes such current deep house talents as DJ Qu, Fred P, Levon Vincent, and Anthony Parasole. Over the course of Anderson’s hour-long mix, he covers plenty of murky, late-night club territory, using tracks from the likes of Roy Davis, Jr., Terre Thaemlitz (a.k.a. DJ Sprinkles), Omar S, and Fred P. The mix can be downloaded via Resident Advisor, here.

Stream GoldFFinch’s ‘The Light Comes’ EP

The bass-inclined Brussels duo GoldFFinch is set to follow up two recent records for Dirtybird and Saigon with a new EP for Turbo‘s Twin Turbo imprint. Called The Light Comes, the release has just been made available to stream in full exclusively on XLR8R. The three-track EP pairs a slick, techno-derived sensibility with off-kilter beats and a very UK-influenced approach to vocal sample treatment. Opener “The Light Comes” and second track “The Beast” posses an expert sense of dynamics and peaktime flow, while “Ward Off” closes the record out with more of a slow-burning sense of space. The Light Comes is set to drop on September 16, but before then, it can be streamed in full via the player below.
