Ekin Fil’s ‘Heavy’ LP Next on Vaagner Label

The fourth Vaagner vinyl reissue comes from Ekin Fil.

Heavy was produced by the Istanbul-based artist five years ago as a means of rehabilitation during a depressing time. It was originally posted to her Soundcloud, but only gained traction three years later when, as user18081971, Richard D. James (a.k.a Aphex Twin) reposted “Still Numbers” as part of his now famed Soundcloud dump, at which point it caught the attention of Vaagner.

In 2016, the album was released on tape via Lee Nobles’ No Kings label, but it has now been remastered by Rashad Becker for issue on vinyl for the first time.

Since Heavy’s original release, Fil has produced four albums for the Helen Scarsdale Agency and worked on multiple film scores. This year, she’s released an LP on the Stockholm’s Possible Motive, as well as You, Only for Vaagner co-label Vaknar.

Vaagner aims to track down rare cassette releases and works with the artists behind the music to have it remastered and released on vinyl. Heavy follows a string of reissues coming from artists such as OAKE, Cremation Lily, and Acronym and Korridor

Heavy is scheduled for August 2 release, with “Aeter” streaming in full below.

Delhia de France, Aparde, Olaf Stuut, and More Remix Janus Rasmussen’s ‘Vin’ LP

Janus Rasmussen will release two remix EPs with tracks from his solo album debut, Vin, reinterpreted by six electronic music artists: Delhia de France, Aparde, Joseph Ashworth, Aleksandir, Olaf Stuut, and Ryan Davis.

Although Rasmussen didn’t know the collaborators personally, he had been following all of them closely. Berlin-based producer Aparde is part of Christian Löffler’s Ki Records, where Rasmussen released Vín. “You can really hear that he’s a drummer; his rhythms are always so interesting and endearing,” says Rasmussen of Aparde. “His sound design is huge as well.”

Rasmussen already collaborated with Delhia de France, German singer, songwriter, producer, and visual artist, on her previous track. “I was really pleasantly surprised by the great production and the enchanting vocal performances. This type of music is just up my alley. Moody and dark sounds are deep in my Nordic DNA.“

Ryan Davis has become a household name in clubs worldwide with his melodic techno, and Rasmussen had been playing Davis’ tunes in his sets for a long time. “He’s super intricate with his remixes and you can really hear how much work and soul he put into these pieces,” Rasmussen says.

The resulting EPs see Rasmussen’s originals taken in all sorts of directions, some more down-tempo and others thumping; some amplify elements of Rasmussen’s track to extremes while the original melody is almost imperceptible on others. “What I love about these artists is that they are all very expressive. They all make very deep and emotional music themselves, so it’s a perfect fit for them to remix my music with all its weirdness and nuances,” Rasmussen adds.

Rasmussen was born in the Faroe Islands, an archipelago of Nordic settlements out in the fringes of the North Sea, but is now based in Iceland. He made a name for himself as part of Kiasmos, but released Vin, his solo album debut, in March of this year.

Fluxion Next Up in Ask the Experts; Send in Your Questions Now

20 years after he began producing, Konstantinos Soublis (a.k.a Fluxion) is now as close as anyone to mastering the art of subtlety in music. While studying Music Technology in London in the early ‘90s, he found himself drawn to the sounds of Jamaican dub, funk, jazz, and electronic music, and soon began to gravitate towards simpler rhythmical structures and also ambient cinematic textures. Of particular interest were Philip Glass, Steve Reich, and Wim Mertens, all of whom positioned repetition at the centre of their work, and the “aural illusion” created when two sonic elements interact to create tones and counter melodies that cannot be expressed in written form. The discovery of the Basic Channel label then provided Soublis with a real example of the dub techno sounds he found himself so drawn towards. “I think I bought the whole catalogue,” Soublis recalls. “I really liked the organic aspect of the productions, and the faceless approach.”

Soublis’ first releases actually came through Chain Reaction, a sub-label of Mark Ernestus’ and Moritz von Oswald’s seminal Berlin imprint, after he delivered a demo through the Hard Wax record store. 1998’s Lark / Atlos,’ a two-track release, was followed by several more short-form outings, the tracks of which then reappeared on long-players Vibrant Forms I and Vibrant Forms II, issued in 1999 and 2000 respectively. Downtempo, deep, and experimental, the albums—Discogs gold and classics of the wider electronic genre—captured Soublis’ almost unparalleled abilities in producing fluid, groove-wise, atmospheric techno that moves the body and soothes the mind. Both albums have been reissued due to popular demand, and they still sound as fresh today.

The success of these albums, and 2001’s Spaces,’ on which he explored the perception of acoustics of different environments and how they can be reproduced artificially, inspired a break from music to reflect on his longer-term ambitions. “I needed to break away from repeating myself over and over,” he says. “I want albums and releases to have a theme, a concept under which the material is being arranged.” So he spent time exploring new influences, returning only in 2009 with Constant Limber,’ and a broader, more varied aesthetic. “There was always a risk factor but I wouldn’t have chosen to produce music for a living if I wanted something safe,” he says. “It is rewarding not to feel any obligation to anything other than my gut feeling when I write music. I believe that’s the only way to stay on track, and engage in new adventures.”

A third part to the Vibrant Forms series surfaced in 2016 on Subwax Bcn, preceded by releases on Echocord and his own Vibrant Music, launched in 1999 as a platform for experimental dub techno from those in Soublis’ orbit. His last album, 2018’s Ripple Effect, created a malleable and expressive hybrid of dub techno and film scoring. “I wanted to combine electronic and score music to evoke visual imagery, creating a new experience, one in which the listener can engage and then create his own visual story,” he explains. “I feel there is a lot of space for me to move freely in this terrain.” Elsewhere, Soublis has released two EPs in collaboration with DeepChord as Transformations.

Only last week, Soublis returned with “Cliff,”  an upbeat slice of dub techno drawn from his love of movie soundtracks, and his first taste of new material in over 12 months. The track is available now via XLR8Rplus alongside exclusive an original from Silverlining and a rework from Redeyes, plus a sample pack from Keita Sano.

In support of the release, Soublis will now step forward to answer your questions, in what is a rare engagement with the media. Whether it be production, performing, label management or anything else, all questions should be sent to [email protected] with “Fluxion” as the subject line. We’ll pass them along to Soublis who will then select his favorites, and soon we’ll publish his answers.

Jinjé “I’m Psychic”

After his recent outing on Ostgut Ton, Jinjé returns to London Messrs. Kick & Drum Records with new single “I’m Psychic,” out via digital purchase/streaming services on Friday, July 19.

“I’m Psychic” is a head-snapping, drone-filled slice of psych-house with neck-cracking percussion. It has received support from Jon Hopkins, who opened his Glastonbury DJ set with it.

Jinjé (a.k.a Lee Malcolm) is a founding member of experimental Leeds-based band Vessels, who have morphed into a maximalist live techno outfit on their last two albums, Dilate (released in March 2015) and The Great Distraction, which came out on Different Recordings in September 2017. Malcolm also had a run of techno releases under his Lee J. Malcolm moniker for EPM Records. Check out his XLR8R podcast here

Ahead of the official release later this week, you can download “I’m Psychic” in full via the WeTransfer button below, or here for EU readers due to temporary GDPR restrictions.

Tralala Blip, Australian Collective of Differently-Abled Musicians, Signs to Lawrence English’s Someone Good

Tralala Blip, an Australian unit of differently-abled musicians hailing from the Northern Rivers of New South Wales, will release a new album on Lawrence English’s Someone Good

Tralala Blip are Mathew Daymond, Lydian Dunbar, Zac Mifsud, Randy Reimann, and Phoebe Rose. Together, they’ve carved out a unique position in the Australian electronic music community. Working to overcome a range of challenges imposed by their disabilities, they have created a range of approaches to instruments, performance, and composition that allows them to create music together.

Eat My Codes If Your Light Falls is their first full-length album in over five years. It charts out an entirely new sonic universe that is the resolution of several years of live performance and studio experiments. It’s produced by Lawrence English, and is the first work in “a new chapter” of what Tralala Blip are becoming.

Beyond their extensive performance commitments, Tralala Blip have presented their work as special guests of TEDx, have had a stage production created about them, and have instigated many workshops for other differently-abled musicians.

Someone Good is a sub-label of Room40.

3 Smokes Olives Books Lamache, Nicolas Lutz, Francesco del Garda, and More for 2019 Edition

Romania’s 3 Smoked Olives festival returns this month for its seventh edition, taking place from July 24 to 30. On the bill are Francesco del Garda, Herodot, Lamache, Clovis, and more.

3 Smokes Olives was first organized nine years ago as an outdoor gathering for a group of friends and has now evolved to become an event in itself, with multiple stages set up and various well-known artists. Visitors enjoy a varied and outdoorsy program: besides the music-filled evenings, they can do yoga, wake-boarding, or enjoy a boat ride on the Danube.

The event takes place on an island in the Danube River, on the border between Romania and Bulgaria, more precisely near the crossing point between Calarasi [RO] & Silistra [BG], in Ostrov. When the river is at its highest, the island stays under water for more than three months. The nearest airport is Bucharest, but you can take a train to Calarasi to be even closer. Various transfer options are made available by the organisers.

More information on the event, including the full lineup and ticketing options, can be found on the official site here. Meanwhile, you can stream an after-movie from last year’s edition below.

Afro-Cuban Jazz Singer Daymé Arocena Returns to Havana Roots on New Album

Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood Recordings will release the fourth album of Daymé Arocena in September.

Sonocardiogram is described as a vivid return to the singer, composer, and songwriter’s Havana roots. Recording sessions with her band were all held in a simple, repurposed artist studio in Havana, Cuba. We can expect a “jazz record bedded in Afro-Cuban rhythms,” and Arocena’s most “raw and arresting” outing yet.

The title is a reference to an echocardiogram, a heart scan: Arocena wanted to mimic that medical procedure with her music. “We wanted to create something that was a snapshot of who we are inside,” she says. “We wanted it to capture our personality, our world, how we hear the music.”

An important voice in Latin music, Daymé has collaborated with influential Cuban peers like Chucho Valdés and Pedrito Martinez, and US heavyweights like Dexter Story and Miguel Atwood-Ferguson. Her last album, Cubafonía, landed in 2017, also via Brownswood, where she’s also released several EPs and two more long-players, in 2015 and ’16 respectively.

Ahead of the album’s release, Arocena has shared lead single Trilogía, a stripped-back, enchanting exploration of her Santería spirituality. Like many of her previous outings, it’s rooted in her home of Havana, and is divided into three movements, each of them named for one of Cuba’s Santería orisha deities.

Sonocardiogram LP lands September 6, with an album teaser below, and Triologia available here now.

CLON & NWRMNTC Discuss and Detail Their New AV Project, META

Back in February, Point Blank hosted a special event for International Women’s Day. The event featured a host of female and female-identified artists who presented the groundbreaking projects they’re working on.

In the video below, which was recorded at the event, producer, curator, and artist Estela Oliva (a.k.a. CLON) and Ana Quiroga (a.k.a. NWRMNTC), a London-based musician and sound designer, discuss their innovative new AV collaboration, META, a performance project that merges audiovisual art and sound design to look at the impact of technology on human beings and the world around us. Going further, the pair discuss how they traveled to Iceland from London to collect 3D scans and field recordings of the natural elements and the old industrial buildings they found there, which helped them to create the enchanting landscapes and atmospheric sounds of the project.

You can watch the video in full via the player below, with more on Point Blank and its courses here.

New Zealand Beat-Maker Kamandi Locks in Album Debut

Kamandi will self-release his debut album tomorrow.

Straddling the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, Kamandi’s output sits at home among tripped out LA beats and the bass-weighted sound of UK electronic music. He uses music as a vehicle to deploy feelings and thoughts to a wider audience, in a way he considers more impactful than words.

The New Zealand-born artist, real name Tyrone Frost, initiated his own arrival into the world of electronic music playing house parties and raves. He began publishing his homemade productions to the masses via Soundcloud and Bandcamp, and created a storm in the process. His output gained recognition from international bodies and notable influencers including Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder, where he released a collaboration with U.S rapper Azizi Gibson.

Voices follows two EPs and further studio collaborations with the likes Three 6 Mafia, Swishahouse, Riff Raff, and Waka Flocka Flame.  We’re told to expect “an introspective collection of deep and meditative sounds.”
