UZU “2PART INVENTION”

UZU are giving away some unreleased material in celebration of the summer. The Liverpool pair of Jim Hall and Danny Mc released their first EP, a self-titled number, via MODU:LAR Music earlier this year, and their next outing is scheduled towards the back end of the year. They also hold a residency with the Liverpool series.

“2PART Invention,” available for download below, is a fast-paced two-step and house fusion with dubbed out vocals and synth glitches.

You can catch the boys bringing Christian AB to Liverpool in July and representing at MODU:LAR Open Air x HardWorkSoftDrink alongside Francesco Del Garda, Max Vaahs, Cedric Dekowski & Felix Reifenberg (live) for the finale of their summer series on August 25.

Amphia Welcomes Dan Andrei

Up next on Amphia is Dan Andrei with Loose Dots, an EP of four slick minimal cuts, and his first release since 2015.

Andrei is one of the more low-profile names associated with the stripped-back sounds of Bucharest, Romania alongside Priku, Barac, Raresh, Rhadoo, etc. He debuted on Arpiar in 2011 before returning with his debut LP, 2015’s Parcul Cosmos. He’s also shared his music on Be Chosen, Kurbits Records, and Jesus Loved You. This is his first appearance on Cristi Cons and Vlad Caia’s label, where he follows Kamran Sadeghi’s Ritual Signal.

Podcast 598: Peder Mannerfelt

From obtuse angles to intense physicality, Peder Mannerfelt’s ongoing mutations of techno remain rooted in the genre’s kinetic energy while breaking down its rigid, illusory constraints. He has recorded an accomplished series of albums as Roll The Dice alongside Malcolm Pardon, and explored a more direct strain of techno as The Subliminal Kid, but it’s under his own name that Mannerfelt’s sonic non-conformist imprint is most acutely felt.

Away from appearances on Hinge Finger, Numbers., Lazy Tapes, and more, he established his own Peder Mannerfelt Produktions label to carry the bulk of his output, and that of kindred spirits like Klara Lewis, Machine Woman, and Sissel Wincent. EPs such as Transmission From A Drainpipe and The 3D Printed Songbook, plus LPs Controlling Body and last year’s Daily Routine all feed into a distinctive abstraction of contemporary techno. It’s an approach at once engaging and challenging, both unhinged and utterly unpredictable.

Mannerfelt’s XLR8R podcast is one driven by instinct rather than concept. Propulsive and crooked, it mixes the strange with the straight-up, the classic with the contemporary, more like a DJ set than one of his other pre-conceived studio mixes. “I’ve done a lot of concept mixes in the past so this one is made with an anti-concept, just straight up banging shit that makes me wanna rock out,” he says. Grab it now via the WeTransfer button below.

What have you been up to recently?

I have just premiered a new live A/V show together with Tarik Barri, it’s a very exciting project that’s based on a program called Videosync which integrates seamlessly into Ableton Live. This program will be a total game changer in terms of what can be done, not just with video but also controlling dmx lights all from the same Live session that runs the audio. I’m super excited to be able to use, abuse, and test this out with Tarik who, in my view, is one of the most innovative people working in the world of live visuals.

Together with Pär Grindvik, I’ve also just released the first records for our new collaborative project, Aasthma. We’re still in the process of figuring out what this project is all about but there’s already some very cool things on the horizon for Aasthma so keep it locked.

When and where was this mix recorded?

It’s all made in Ableton on a transatlantic flight to the US and back where I did a show together with Tarik at the Cycling 74 Expo at MASS MoCA. The expo was a super nice place to meet a bunch of freaks from around the world who came together to geek out over coding, most of which flew way above my head.

How did you choose the records that you included?

It’s basically just my most recent folder of music lifted from Rekordbox into Ableton.

Is there a particular concept behind it?

I wanted it to reflect where I’m at musically at this particular moment and for it to be a snapshot of what I would play in a club. I’ve done a lot of concept mixes in the past so this one is made with an anti-concept, just straight up banging shit that makes me wanna rock out.

What’s next on the horizon?

I’ve got a whole bunch of remixes of a track from my last album called ”Sissel & Bass” coming out on June 21. This is actually the first ever remixes release of my solo work I’ve commissioned so I’m very excited to get this out. I’ve done some kick-ass long sleeve T-shirts to go with the release, also a first for my label. After that, I’m gonna retreat to the Stockholm archipelagos for a well-deserved summer holiday with the family.

Martyn Revisits Drum & Bass Roots on New Ostgut Ton EP

Martyn is back on Ostgut Ton with a new EP, Odds Against Us

Odds Against Us sees the Dutch producer return to his genre-spanning interest in UK club music, pursuing a sampling spirit innovated by drum & bass while operating independent of BPM. It follows 2018’s Voids on which he returned to his deep, percussive roots, nimbly constructing complex webs of rhythm, melody, and inventive basslines centered around a near-death experience.

Martyn’s previous work has appeared on Brainfeeder, Ninja Tune, and 3024, among others.

“While Odds Against Us sees Martyn revisiting his musical beginnings, the sound and emotion once again emerge from a holistic perspective to rhythm and dance music,” Ostgut explains.

Albrecht La’Brooy Recorded New Apollo Ambient LP in a Mud-Brick Hut

Apollo will release Healesville, the new ambient album of Albrecht La’Brooy (a.k.a Sean La’Brooy and Alex Albrecht), recorded in a mud-brick hut on a strawberry crop in the Melbourne countryside.

Healesville follows on from the bucolic wonder of the Australian duo’s 2018 Apollo debut, Tidal River, which took inspiration from their visit to the Wilson’s Promontory, a remote national park on the South East coast of Australia.

“Late last year, we trekked out to a beautiful mud-brick studio located next to a large strawberry crop in Healesville,” Albrecht recalls. “We spent a few days capturing the feeling of the slow-paced, relaxed surrounds—the wildlife, the strawberry pickers, the sounds of the night, and improvising a response to them with music we felt suited.” Setting up their favoured musical equipment, which included two pianos, a Waldorf, a Nord, and a clutch of microphones, they began their long-form improvisations.

The resulting pieces are fully improvised (augmented by percussionist Joseph Batrouney, guitarist Carla Oliver, and guitarist Oliver Patterson), freeform recordings that explore themes of relaxation, sleep, and dreams.

We can expect a “delicate fusion of ambient electronic textures, live instrumentation, and field recordings that beguiles and soothes the listener in these troubled times,” the label explains.

Irish Multi-Instrumentalist Ocean Floor Captures Life’s Natural Cycles on New Album

Ocean Floor has shared his new album, Vernalis, via Seattle, Washington’s Eiderdown Records

Vernalis is the Irish multi-instrumentalist’s eighth release, and was recorded in March 2018 in Bristol, UK. It’s the product of a single recording session in Jute Box Studio using their Hammond organ and vintage Korg MS-10 synthesizer.

The album consists of three elemental improvisations, where simple Hammond chord progressions are elaborated on by swirls of synthesized sound. Each improvisation is based around a simple melodic theme that disappears into waves of sound and re-emerges periodically. This sense of departure and return aims to mirror natural cycles, such as the emergence of spring from winter.

Ocean Floor is the solo project of Aonghus Reidy. Since his debut release, Jupiter, in 2014, he has released several albums of slowly evolving harmonies and soundscapes, with elements of ambient, minimalist, and experimental styles. Relocating to Bristol in 2011, his music took a new direction after finding an antique harmonium in a local salvage shop. Its creaking bellows inspired a series of compositions that meld 19th-century music technology with dense clouds of electronic sound and reverb.
