Matthew Dear, Oskar Offermann, and More Play Berlin’s ELSE

Berlin’s ELSE will continue its summer season this Sunday with Matthew Dear, Oskar Offermann, Heartthrob, and Fango all set to play.

ELSE is the open-air institution curated by Salon zur Wilden Renate on the banks of the river Spree. With ample amount of deck space in which to dangle one’s feet by the river, flowing Bavarian beer to stay refreshed, and traditional German fare to fill up on, the venue is the perfect spot to spend those lazy summer days.

This Sunday’s event, however, is more of an “all-out rave,” starting outside at 12 and continuing indoors from 10pm onwards until the early hours of Monday morning.

Tickets are available here.

Further events have been announced for the season, details of which will be released soon.

Marcel Lune ‘The Further You Look’

We last heard from Marcel Lune back in 2015 when he offered up “Stasis Jam,” a groove-led cut in support of his debut LP, Sounds From The Desert Gully, as an XLR8R download. Now, Lune is back with a new album on Swedish label Local Talk and another dance-inducing free download in tow.

Titled Astral Palms, the album follows his debut Local Talk release, Sketches, with 12 melodically rich and experimental tracks that are both refined and accessible. On the album, Lune further proves that he has a way with crafting a unique sonic blend of rhythms and textures, tracks that defy classification but undoubtedly move the body.

Astral Palms dropped earlier this month and can be grabbed from Local Talk here, with Lune’s exclusive cut “The Further You Look” available as a free download via WeTransfer below.

Weekly Selections: Hessle Audio at Prototype, Mathew Johnson in LA, Sub Club x Exit Festival

There are seemingly countless options for quality underground sounds this weekend in Los Angeles. We recommend kicking off the weekend at Prototype at Lot 613, where the entirety of the Hessle Audio crew will touch down for a special stop on their 10-year anniversary world tour. The UK-based, genre-bending label and collective, comprised of Ben UFO, Pangea, and Pearson Sound, will perform an extended 6-hour set. Presales are strongly recommended for the party; get them here.

On Saturday night, the legendary Mathew Johnson, affectionately known in the XLR8R offices as “the Mozart of techno,” will touch down for his first live gig in Los Angeles since 2008. Johnson will be playing the Into The Woods party at a proper warehouse location, with details to be shared with ticket holders the night of the event. With support provided by Michael Walsh and Maheras, this one’s not to be missed. Tickets and more info can be found here.

And across the pond at the seminal Scottish venue Sub Club, Exit Festival will be taking over the Club’s Subculture series in promotion of their No Sleep stage at the festival in July. The party will feature residents Harri & Domenic (who will also play Sub Club’s takeover at Exit this summer), as well as special guest Honey Dijon. Tickets are available here.

RVNG Intl. Partners With Moogfest for Peaceful Protest

RVNG Intl. has compiled a collection of six long-form compositions and recordings from Baltra, Kate NV, Zach Cooper, You’re Me, C. Lavender, and Raica.

Inspired by Moogfest’s invitation to soundtrack a meditation space during their 2017 festival in Durham, North Carolina, the pieces will be housed in a three-cassette package screen printed by Keegan Mills Cooke and stitched by Hailey Desjardins—the release also features a poem of peace by NYC wordsmith Rafael Sanchez.

In response to the inequality proliferating from North Carolina’s policy-makers and taking into account the diverse backgrounds of the composers, RVNG will be donating all proceeds to the LGBTQ Center of Durham.

The cassette edition of Peaceful Protest is limited to 200 copies and will only be available at Moogfest 2017 and Commend. Alongside the announcement, RVNG has shared “KAK HOW,” a snippet of Moscow-based musician Kate NV’s contribution to Peaceful Protest, available to listen in the layer above, with Rafael Sanchez’s poem and the tracklisting below.

“But You are the state of humanity and prostrate before a lavender sky”

1. Baltra “Where Do We Go From Here”
2. Kate NV “УХО EAR”
3. Kate NV “ДУБ OAK”
4. Kate NV “KAK HOW”
5. Kate NV “ЖУК BUG”
6. Kate NV “ЗРЯ SEE”
7. Zach Cooper “The arts are the first to go.”
8. You’re Me w/ Jon Scherk “Live From Deep Blue”
9. C. Lavender “White Oleander”
10. C. Lavender “Delphic Oracle Enters The Chasm”
11. Raica “Stellar Remnant”

Flying Lotus Shares Two New Tracks

Flying Lotus shared two new tracks yesterday, namely “North Star3” and “You And Your Friends Are Dead.”

Both tracks were uploaded onto the US artist’s Soundcloud, and are both credited to THUNDERDETH LOTUS.

The tracks, which feature Thundercat and Brendon Small, are listed as “You’re Dead! THUNDERDETH LOTUS” suggesting they may have come from the sessions of his last album. After all, Thundercat played throughout You’re Dead! and Small was featured on the tracks “Turkey Dog Coma” and “Siren Song.”

“You And Your Friends Are Dead” is also hashtagged with Dethklok, the fictional band from Small’s Adult Swim series Metalacolypse. Small is currently working on a metal album under his own name with the other musicians from the show, but will not use the band name due to license restrictions with Adult Swim.

Honey Dijon Plays Sub Club for Exit Festival

Glasgow’s Sub Club, the legendary underground music venue that first opened doors back in 1987, will continue its 30th birthday celebrations with a special collaborative party with Serbia’s Exit Festival.

The Subculture event, which will take place on Saturday, May 20, is intended to promote Sub Club’s hosting of the No Sleep stage at Exit Festival this summer, which will feature a range of top-notch house artists such as Denis Sulta and club residents Harri & Domenic. This weekend’s party will also feature Harri & Domenic, along with a headlining DJ set from the always reliable Honey Dijon.

A limited number of tickets to the party are still available; get them here.

Ninja Tune’s Big Dada Celebrates 20 Years with Releases from Zomby, Hype Williams, and More

The Nina Tune sister label Big Dada is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year.

Born in 1997, Big Dada was founded by Will Ashon as an outlet for the most innovative and progressive music emanating from the UK underground (and beyond) and 20 years deep, the label has remained steadfastly committed to this ethos. It’s impossible to ascribe any one sonic signature to Big Dada’s output, but the dedication and singular vision to advancing the sound has been evident from the very first release, spanning landmark records from Wiley, Diplo, Run The Jewels, King Geedorah (a.k.a MF Doom), Young Fathers, Kate Tempest, and Darq E Freaker, to name but a handful.

To mark the occasion, it has lined up a run of new releases throughout the rest of the year and into 2018 from Young Fathers, King Geedorah, Zomby, Hype Williams, Sampa The Great, Visionist, WEN, Farai, EERA, Kai Whiston & Kutmah—with more yet to be announced.

Accompanying the announcement, the label has shared a brand new single from Kutmah, titled “Bury Me By The River” and featuring vocals by Gonjasufi.
