Steffi Mixes ‘fabric 94’

Steffi has mixed the 94th fabric mix

Steffi—real name Steffie Doms—has been a vital electronic music artist since the mid-90s, when she first began playing out and throwing parties in Amsterdam. Moving to Berlin in 2007, she was embraced by the Ostgut family, becoming a resident at the club and releasing on the label. To date, she’s released five albums, including two solo LPs for Ostgut—and a third is due in the Autumn. She’s co-produced another with Virginia, with Analogue Cops as Third Side, and she collaborated as Doms & Deykers on Martyn’s 3024 label. Her impressive discography features club classics like “Yours” feat.Virginia,” carefully chosen remixes and appearances on labels including Permanent Vacation and Underground Quality, and a mix for Panorama Bar. She owns and operates three labels: Klakson, with Dexter, which was founded in 2000 alongside Awanto 3, Dolly, and Dolly Dubs. Her newest imprint will be Dolly Deluxe, inaugurated this June with music made for her fabric mix.

For fabric 94, Steffi chose to commission all the tracks exclusively for her mix. The curated group of close friends and collaborators were guided to produce tracks “with a certain mindset,” which Steffi has molded and weaved together. Considering each track was made especially for the mix, it’s “musically cohesive with a mood and sound that followers of her career over the past decade will recognize,” the label explains.

The Dutch-born, Berlin-based DJ-producer says she looked to the sound of Warp’s classic Artificial Intelligence CDs as “an atmospheric starting point” and then traveled far beyond it.

Steffi:

“Fabric always offered full support for my creative wishes and it is such a great honor to contribute to the mix series. I have great respect for the endless amount of positive energy the whole team has put into this club over the years going through ups and downs, but still shining and sailing such a strong and important ship!

“When fabric approached me to do a mix CD I wanted to do something special, so I approached my inner circle and some of my favorite producers to ask if they wanted to produce a track especially for this project with a certain mindset. I have always been a massive fan of Warp’s Artificial Intelligence CDs and this was a starting point in terms of atmosphere … My initial thought was to step away from beat mixing completely and let the atmosphere set the tone, but when the tracks started rolling in it naturally shaped up as a fully mixed CD.”

Tracklisting

01. L.u.c.a. “Echo 1”
02. Voiski “Sound Of Distance”
03. STFSHD “1.5”
04. Unbalance “Freedom”
05. Doms & Deykers “No Life On The Surface”
06. Answer Code Request “Forking Path”
07. Dexter “66”
08. 214 “Sound Moments”
09. Mesak “Commonaukko”
10. Duplex “Voidfiller”
11. Late Night Approach “Poison Valley”
12. UAS “World Gets Crazy”
13. Afik Naim “Saturniidae”

Watch Robot Koch Break Down a Track in New Masterclass

In Point Blank‘s latest guest workshop in Los Angeles, award-winning producer and composer Robot Koch treated students to a live deconstruction of “Eclipse,” a track from his 2015 album, Hypermoment, released on Monkeytown Records.

In the masterclass, which was co-hosted by PBLA instructor Sweatson Klank (who is a labelmate on Project: Mooncircle), Robot Koch gives insight on his approach to collaboration with French pianist Julien Marchal , his ‘destructive’ approach to workflow, highlighting the benefits of committing midi to audio, and demoing some live processing techniques.

You can watch the video in full below with more on Point Blank and its course here.

Ghosting ‘One Summer (Spirited Away)’

Reimagining Miyazaki is the ambitious debut instrumental mixtape from Ghosting, a new moniker from influential Melbourne producer Andrei Eremin. The mixtape is inspired by the soundtracks of iconic anime director Hayao Miyazaki’s work. Each track on the mixtape uses samples from Miyazaki’s feature films, transporting them to an awe-inspiring new dimension—once you hear the music, it’s obvious this will become a sought-after classic and one that is treasured not only by Miyazaki fans but music lovers in general.

The mixtape combines Eremin’s signature shimmering sonic palette with swinging grooves, melancholic synths, and rumbling bass—Eremin’s work sits comfortably alongside luminaries such as Bonobo, Sun Glitters, and Tycho. In creating the project’s artwork, and for inspiration, Eremin flew to one of Miyazaki’s inspirations, as he explains:

“What began as a fleeting thought about how I could organize cover artwork for the mixtape somehow turned into me booking a flight to Taiwan for the next week, fast-tracking a passport and studying a Chinese learning app relentlessly until I left (turned out to be fruitless). All for the same price of a commissioned piece, bless globalism.

Why Taiwan and not Japan? There’s a coastal mining town 45 minutes out from Taipei called Jiufen, famous for being the inspiration behind Hayao Miyazaki’s revered film Spirited Away. He’s since denied it but the resemblance is unquestionable. Narrow tunnels and cobblestone laneways, shrouded by steam from the countless dumpling, dessert, and barbecue meat cookers to keep you warm from the relentless rain and fog. I’m not exaggerating, it rained for 80 hours straight when I was there—two simultaneous raincoats couldn’t keep me dry.”

Reimagining Miyazaki will arrive May 12 via Wondercore Island and ahead of that, you can download “One Summer (Spirited Away)” via WeTransfer below.

Premiere: Hear a Track from Rebekah’s Debut Album

UK techno artist Rebekah will drop her debut album via Soma on April 28.

The album, titled Fear Paralysis, follows Rebekah’s 2015 debut EP on the label, Confined Heart, and presents a more refined sound than what she has generally known for. Across the album’s 13 tracks, Rebekah shows off her adaptability via varied and unpredictable cuts that are as suited to home listening as they are to club destruction.

Ahead of tomorrow’s release, you can stream the deep and rolling title track via the player below.

Stream Stefan Wesolowski’s Enchanting New Album in Full

Polish composer and violinist Stefan Wesolowski will drop his sophomore full-length album, Rite of the End, tomorrow on Ici d’ailleurs‘ Mind Travel Series.

The haunting new work follows his recent score to the BAFTA-nominated and Oscar-shortlisted Marlon Brando docu-film ‘Listen To Me Marlon’ and his 2015 album Kompleta. The album began life as a commission from Ici D’Ailleurs founder Stéphane Grégoire, who asked Wesolowski to write a piece for an exhibition by the acclaimed photographer Francis Meslet. Not long after Wesolowski began composing, his creative juices flowing considerably, it became obvious there was enough material to warrant a new full-length album, at which point the exhibition was postponed and the record took full focus.

Sitting loosely alongside the work of artists such as Vatican Shadow, Popul Vuh, Set Fire To Flames, Sun O))), and F**k Buttons, Rite of the End is an awe-inspiring collection of music that soars through dread, sorrow, joy, and everything emotion in between. This is an album that demands and deserves the listener’s undivided attention—this is a stunning and poignant inward journey guided by the deft hand of Wesolowski.

Ahead of tomorrow’s release, you can pre-order the album here, with a full stream available via the player below.
