Avalon Emerson Announces New EP; Stream Here

Producer, DJ and software developer Avalon Emerson has announced a new EP titled The Frontier on Whities.

Paying tribute to her native Arizona, Emerson describes the forthcoming release as “a love letter to her childhood home, the Arizona Desert.” Finding a personal and composed balance between abstract and propulsive dancefloor music, The Frontier is a pleasantly arid and psychedelic three-tracker with a glittering, archaic aura.

Stream the New Album from DeWalta and Shannon

Mike Shannon and DeWalta have made their new album, Residual (which will be released via Spain’s Indigo Raw), available to stream.

Canadian Mike Shannon and German native DeWalta released their first record together back in 2011 via Shannon’s Cynosure imprint, and have since put out other EPs on Haunt and Meander. Residual is their first full-length effort as a pair, and is also their first new material together for three years.

According to the label, we can expect a “special marriage of smooth grooves and fat beats,” as the pair deliver “eight distinct peeks into an electrifying creative process that run the gamut from deep and moody to minimal or, dare we say, jazzy.”

Residual will be split into two separate vinyls, and one comprehensive digital release. Check out the full tracklist below:

Drumcell/Hypoxia & Surachai Reveal New LP on BL_K NOISE

Moe Espinosa (a.k.a Drumcell / Hypoxia) and Surachai have revealed themselves to be the names behind BL_K NOISE, a label designated to release noisy-industrial pieces. Up until now, the label, which is very different to Drumcell’s current imprint, Droid, has kept a very low profile.

The launch of the label will be marked by the release of Instinct and Memory, the new long-player from prolific Chicago-based producer, Surachai. Never one to settle into a groove, Surachai has staked out territory in a number of genres. Instinct and Memory rests in the analog noise spectrum, but exhibits an eerie melodiousness and shadowed aggression unique among Surachai’s recordings.

Instinct and Memory is scheduled for April 29 release.

DGTL Festival Reveals Complete Timetable

DGTL Festival has revealed the complete timetable for this year’s edition, which will host over 70 international acts in Amsterdam over the Easter weekend.

On the opening night, the Scheepsbouwloods will be turned into The Shelter, playing host to headliners Black Coffee, Maya Jane Coles and Âme (who will perform a live set). The main stage will be shut down by Hot Since 82 on the Saturday (following on from Seth Troxler), at the same time that KiNK plays his live set on the XLR8R stage. Nina Kraviz makes her DGTL debut on the Sunday night of the festival as the final act, whilst DVS1 does his thing over at the XLR8R stage.

Point Blank‘s new Masters at Work Series features James Wiltshire, who shows you how to create, arrange, and mix a drum track in Ableton Live.

In part one, Wilshire records Roland’s now-classic 808, E-mu SP-1200, and the new Roland TR-8, as well as giving plenty of insight into how they work along the way. In parts two and three, the Freemasons producer shows how to arrange and mix the drums, as well as some effects and final mix processing.

Half Baked Announce Easter Sunday Line Up

Half Baked have announced the complete line up for their Easter Sunday party at Studio 338 this year.

Launched six years ago in London as a Sunday event, Half Baked has grown substantially since, taking their parties across the globe, to the likes of Miami, Barcelona, Beirut and Berlin (as well as starting up a label which has released music by Mike Shannon, Birdsmakingmachine and Enrico Mantini).

On Easter Sunday this year, they are bringing together a host of house and techno talent from around the world to London. A strong French contigent are booked in—Dan Ghenacia (one part of Apollonia) is joined by minimal specialist Cabanne, Point G (a.k.a. DJ Gregory) and Le Loup. Representing Detroit is Mike Huckaby, a pioneer of the true deep house sound, as well as Strength label boss DJ Qu from New Jersey. Rounding off the line up are Yone-Ko, Julietta, and London local Robin Ordell.

Seuil CFS EP

The Parisian underground has long had a fascination with house music, churning out generations of producers who capture a certain je ne sais quoi. Its legacy continues in Alexis Benard (a.k.a. Seuil), the head honcho at Eklo who has been responsible for a decade’s worth of polished, groovy four-to-the-floor rhythms.

After spending some time flirting with a more emotional character in his tunes (take “Ultravision” or “Sub Boogie Drama,” for example), Benard has since locked into tighter, more minimal sounds, a trait also evident in his selection of artists recently added to the label, including the likes of Justin Zerbst, Vadim Svoboda, or Cristi Cons. His latest release, CFS, is no exception. The most full-bodied of the lot is opener “CFS 1,” which is defined by its undulating bass and light hi-hats—a pleasant, bouncy tech house tinged tune. It is in his other offerings that things become a bit more unorthodox. Heavy on synth work is “CFS 2,” a choppy number that plays with robotic, electro-influenced chimes (a style very in vogue at present).

On a similar tip is “CFS 3,” which also toys with similar metallic jingles, ringing over an unpredictable bassline, which somehow all slots together seemingly effortlessly. Record-digging maestro Etienne, now based in Berlin and turning his hand to studio work (with a couple of high quality releases on Noir&Son and Undersound to date), offers a more pacy remix of “CFS 3” that packs much more of a punch than the original.

Torso “Fat Vint” (Liar Optimix)

Zachary Davison and Sean McTiernan, who make up the Dublin-based duo Torso, are slated to release their debut EP titled Human Resources via the interstellar imprint Tessier-Ashpool Records. When first sending over their demo tape to Tessier-Ashpool‘s head honcho, Romanian producer Liar, he was astounded and delighted to find that Torso’s sound and aesthetic was tailor made for the label. The boutique label is enticed by subjects related to astronomy, mathematics, and science fiction, and this obsession shines true in their industrial, post-grime sound.

XLR8R is pleased to be hosting Torso’s online debut in the form of “Fat Vint” (Liar Optimix), a cut from the duo’s forthcoming EP. Named after a minor character in the 1958 western “Warlock,” the track is a fitful, eerie, and futuristic hinterland beat with a percussive gallop and a splendid and unsettling cast of the “maddening treachery of frontier law.”
