Ableton are making content available from last year’s Loop summit for music makers in Berlin, the first of which comes from Holly Herndon, discussing process in production.

In her audio-visual talk for Ableton music makers, Holly Herndon focuses on the role of process in production. Based in San Francisco, Herndon is known for her work as a composer, musician and sound artist. The talk is guided by her experience in said work, as well as her experience studying at Mills College and Stanford University’s Centre for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics, referencing everything from government surveillance to her work with Mat Dryhurst.

Ableton have also shared a further video with Herndon, in conversation with fellow composer Jace Clayton (a.k.a. DJ/rupture). The pair cover topics including the idea of artistry as activism, the role of euphoria in electronic music, and autotune.

Michael Klein Announces New EP

Frankfurt native Michael Koczynski (a.k.a Michael Klein) has a new EP out today via Second State. Named Metals, the record marks the artist’s second effort landing on the German imprint, originally founded by Berlin techno veterans Pan-Pot. Succeeding last year’s Drawing EP, Klein’s latest four-tracker sees the producer return to his characteristic dark sound, paired up with groovy basslines, while still delivering a more evolved and innovative sound. As stated by the label, it lies “somewhere between the traditional fundamentals and the future stylings of the most distinguished techno.”

Metals is available now on vinyl via decks.de and deejay.de. A digital version is expected to land in the near future.

Lower Spectrum “Masquerade”

Since sharing his latest sonic offerings, its become abundantly clear that formative Australian producer Ned Beckley (a.k.a Lower Spectrum) is no stranger to sound design. While his music continues to gain a considerable amount of traction internationally, Beckley has soundtracked and edited a number documentaries and shorts, while having also scored music for The Australian Ballet. Despite having a full schedule with all types of various musical projects, Lower Spectrum has still managed to find the time to craft a number of noteworthy releases while supporting the likes of Jon Hopkins, Andy Stott, Pantha Du Prince, Flako, Onra, and Nightmares On Wax in recent months.

Ahead of his forthcoming New Haze EP, which is set to land on the Australian music label Pilerats Records in April, Lower Spectrum has offered up his track “Masquerade” as today’s XLR8R download. Kicking off with an airy, minimal, and pleasantly erratic blues vibe, the track drastically teeters between a confounding acoustic sound and an intricate synth arrangements that give it great confidence and swing. While the sound may put one in mind of Nicolas Jaar’s musical mastery and style, Lower Spectrum manages to preserve a distinct pattern and tonality that is all his own.

Kyoka Returns to Raster-Noton

Following on from her 2014 album with Raster-Noton, Kyoka is back with four-tracker SH, which according to the label might be “her most experimental record so far.”

Originally from Japan, Kyoka now splits her time between Tokyo and Berlin. Specialising in experimental rhythms, her approach is characterised by chaotic and heavy sounds. Kyoka’s next EP, SH, was inspired by a residency at Stockholm’s EMS Studios, and is full of “unforeseen shifts in beat, unpredictable repetitions and surprising clicks and bops.”

This year Raster-Noton celebrates its 20th Anniversary, and will be doing so with “White Circle”—an audio-visual project with works by Alva Noto, Byetone, Frank Bretschneider, and Kangding Ray. At its opening night on March 11, Kyoka will also join the bill.

SH will be available on vinyl from March 25 (as well as digitally with two bonus tracks) via the Raster-Noton store. You can stream one of the EP’s tracks, “Smash/Hush,” below. 

Adra Announces Next EP

San Francisco’s Alandria Sheffer (a.k.a. Adra) has revealed details of her second EP, The Roswell Incident, out in April.

Following on from her techno-fueled debut Fear Is The Mind Killer last year, Sheffer returns with more of the same. According to the label, listeners can expect “two ominous TB-303-laden cuts,” and another that “ventures even further into the realms of techno with bizarre, alienating textures.” In addition, Adra has enlisted Soo Wavey Records boss Vin Sol for an acid-fueled remix of “Project Mogul.”

The Roswell Incident is out April 4, and can be pre-ordered from Bandcamp.

Premiere: Watch the Official Video for Phon.o’s “Tw33tz”

The “death” of 50WEAPONS has been much publicized and, from a fan’s perspective, agonized. From the outset, it was only ever going to reach 50 releases, but that doesn’t water down the gloom of the end actually arriving. To go out in style, 50WEAPONS announced an 11-part finale series, with the track in question here, Phon.o’s “Tw33tz,” featuring on the second installment alongside Paula Temple’s “Oscillate.”

Nostalgic in its sound and execution, “Tw33tz” perfectly encapsulates the end of one of modern clubland’s premiere labels, and now arrives with a fitting video featuring a phoenix-like bird traversing through mind-expanding animations, as explained by Phon.o:

“The spirit of the creature travels in time between past and future being insensible, but it doesn’t matter past or future, oblivion exists everywhere. At the end none can escape the way which always leads to the beginning.“

Watch a New Video from The Toxic Avenger

Following up with the second piece of a two part video series is Paris-based electro producer The Toxic Avenger.

Having just released his latest album, ☰ (pronounced “X”), last week via the Parisian electro label Roy Music, Toxic is now sharing his most recent music video for “Kids,” the first single off the new album.

During the creative process of producing the album, Toxic returned to the sources of his deepest creative sensibilities to create an LP that is full of hauntingly pitched down electro bangers and buzzing techno arrangements. While this album was mostly composed between studios located in Los Angeles and Paris, Toxic still finds himself most comfortable as a producer in the shadows, influencing and gaining respect while constantly pushing his own limits in the studio.

Check Out the Debut Album by Colours

Today, Florida-based electronic music act Colours has released its debut LP, Ivory, on Chicago’s Victory Records.

The duo—featuring Kyle Tamo on vocals and Morgan Alley on drums—wrote the songs for Ivory over a 14-month period, following up their self-released EP called Skin and Bones.

“Having only two members in Colours offers us a unique and advantageous opportunity when creating,” divulges Tamo. “When too many people are working on a creative project, often personal preferences and risk have to be diluted for compromise. Our personal experience finds the most resonating growth comes with internal resolution, and we hope to offer our music as the catalyst to that.”
