Lotic Shares New Single, “Solace”

With their debut album Power set for release July 13 via Tri Angle Records, Houston-born, now Berlin-based, Lotic has unveiled a new single from the record, titled “Solace.”

Speaking about the new track, Lotic said: “‘Solace’ is my reminder to myself that no matter how hard things get, trouble doesn’t last always! Hang in there, it’s gon’ be ok! It’s my self-reminder that I actually am a fearless bitch and that experiencing pain or hardship is not a weakness but a moment for growth, for strength.”

Those familiar with Lotic’s two 2015 EPs—Heterocetera (Tri Angle) and Agitations (Janus)—will trace a warm-blooded evolution: we’re told that Power “retains the Berlin musician’s inquisitive intensity while mining the depths of nuance like never before.”

It originally started as an empowerment album,” says Lotic. “I felt that I needed to offer something outside of myself, as sort of a healing moment. And then I lost my apartment. Mentally, I could only work on music once every three months or something. The question of what would be empowering—the answer to that changed so often over a two-year period. I had to figure out who I was all over again. With this record, I went back and incorporated all of my musical selves.

Lotic was born in Houston and studied electronic music composition and saxophone at university. They moved to Berlin in 2012, where they helped form the Janus club collective. In 2015, they were commissioned to create two remixes for Björk’s Vulnicura and subsequently were invited to be the opening act at her live show in Berlin.

As well as being available digitally, Power will be released on limited edition vinyl, housed in a die-cut sleeve designed by Marwan Kaabour, and will feature a vinyl-only exclusive track called “Burn A Print.”

The album artwork was shot by director and photographer Matt Lambert, styled by Rich Aybar and features Lotic wearing clothes designed by Iris Van Herpen.

Dark Circles ‘Dropmyre’ (House Mix)

Dark Circles’ Dropmire EP is the second release on Timothy Clerkin’s Ransom Note‘s Insult To Injury sub-label. We’re told to expect two “moody, analog techno / acid-house bombs.”

Opener “Dropmire” smacks you around the face before “False Flag,” a slightly jauntier affair with its brisk, bouncing bassline. Remixes come from label boss Timothy Clerkin and Bawrut.

Dark Circles is made up of UK’s Iain Bogg and Matthew Waites.

Premiere: Hear a Driving House Cut From La Fraicheur

InFiné will release the debut LP from La Fraicheur on June 22.

The album, titled Self-Fulfilling Prophecy, continues a long-running relationship between the label and Detroit, presenting nine tracks recorded in the legendary Underground Resistance studios following an invitation from Detroit legend Mike Banks. Musically, Self-Fulfilling Prophecy finds La Fraicheur swinging confidently across a range of styles, from grandiose techno to deep electro and silky deep house, all the while managing to sound original. Using samples of speeches from the likes of the Black Panther’s Angela Davis, La Fraicheur hopes to “use moments of dancing to stimulate a bit of political awakening,” a direct reflection of her feminism and work to strengthen the place of women in electronic music.

Ahead of the release, Infiné has offered up a full stream of the album’s closing cut, “Plant 21,” available via the player below. Named after Detroit’s famous Fischer Body Plant 21, “Plant 21” was composed with a range of field recordings captured by La Fraicheur during the recording process. With its background and engrossing sound design, it’s a fitting closing track to a beautiful record.

You can pre-order the album here.

Tresor Records Announces Donato Dozzy Album, Shares Track

Tresor Records has announced its 303rd release, Filo Loves The Acid, a commissioned acid album by Donato Dozzy

As the title and catalog number suggest, the album is a nod to Roland’s seminal TB-303 bass synthesizer, presenting eight propulsive techno cuts on a double 12″. The record is also a dedication to Dozzy’s lifelong friend Filo.

Filo Loves The Acid will drop on vinyl and digitally on July 13, with album cut “Back” streaming in full via the player below.

Arkestra “Back to Dreamland”

Earlier this month, Get Physical released Get Physical Presents: Ibiza 2018, once again mixed by Ibiza-based artist Ben Hoo.

Hoo returns for his second edition of Get Physical Presents, following on from last year’s Get Physical Presents: Ibiza 2017, presenting another superb mix featuring 17 new and exclusive tracks. The mix lands a week after the release of Hoo’s An Expanse, a deep and melodic EP featuring two of his own tracks from the compilation. Like An ExpanseGet Physical Presents: Ibiza 2018 focuses on the groove, with emotive, subtly evolving tracks that range from gorgeous ambient (“Into Focus”) to stripped-back minimal (“Here and There”) and more trippy house (“Montblanc”).

In support of the release, Get Physical has offered up Arkestra’s dreamy dub house track “Back To Dreamland” as today’s XLR8R download, available via WeTransfer below.

Studio Essentials: Dapayk Solo

Dapayk Solo, real name Niklas Worgt, is a Berlin-based producer with 10 solo LPs already under his belt—the most recent of which arrived in April, titled The Calling. It was his first album since 2015’s #nofilter

Worgt was born in Thuringia and found his way into electronic music during the early ’90s, initially through broken beats and drum & bass; he first appeared as Frauds in White but his aesthetic steadily shifted as the decade reached a close. The early 2000s saw him start the Depayk project through which he showcased a new techno sound with releases on Karloff, Resopal Schallware, and his own Mo’s Ferry Prod. His debut album arrived in 2006, titled Impulsion Parasite, and he’s since maintained a steady stream of new material upon which he expands continuously with various side projects.

The Calling, out now, tells the story of Zoe, a young survivalist searching for answers on a digital pilgrimage; think of it as an atmospheric score to her science fiction adventure on her personal path of spiritual enlightenment. With modern programming, techno beats, opulent analog pads, and stylistic elements picked from house, electro, minimal, trip-hop, and ambient, Worgt creates a dark and meditative sound aesthetic—at times cinematic and dream-like, yet not bereft of dancefloor compatibility. Interested to know more, XLR8R reached out to learn about the key pieces of studio gear behind the music.

Mutable Instruments Clouds

The Mutable Instruments Clouds is a Eurorack module that I used for creating reverbs during the album production. In combination with random voltage into the different inputs, it can create really unusual sound effects. The freeze function can also be used to create endless drone patterns to achieve an ambient feeling like at the end of the “The Field.”

Elektron Analog Rytm

The next machine in my set up is the Elektron Analog Rytm. I added it to my toolset in 2014 and it’s a very essential piece for me when I play live. I have a long history with Elektron. I just love their machines. It’s the best drum machine I have worked with so far. The combination of the analog drums and sample player leaves great possibilities for creative opportunities. I especially used the kickdrum section of the Rytm a lot, since the low end is really important to us. Also, the Rytm offers a quantization function by percentage. I love the fact that this gives you the possibility to gradually quantize your recorded finger drums. This makes for some very organic and human sounding drums.

Moog Mother 32

I added the Moog Mother 32 to my setup last year. This is the first Moog in the studio. I thought one is not enough, so I got two of them in order to be able to sync them to get a two-voiced detuned bass sound. It was the wisest decision I’ve made in a long time. The sound is unbelievably warm and full—in a way very classical. It’s an important tool to create a bass foundation for tracks while layering pads. We worked with it on several tracks on the Dapayk & Padberg album Harbour, such as “U-Camargue” and “Stop Running.”

Novation Circuit

Another fantastic tool is the Novation Circuit. The Circuit is great to help you out of a creative low. I had a creative block after a holiday in Mallorca when our computers with the most recent versions of the Harbour album on it were stolen. We were really pissed because a lot of ideas and tracks were just gone. Soon after that incident a friend of mine sent me the Circuit and asked me to give honest feedback on it. I did and it got me started on working on new ideas again. I used it especially for bass and drum sounds, mostly to produce some small loops, which we later sampled and edited in the computer. The option to load in samples and just play around with ideas is a lot of fun and sometimes just what you need to broaden your possibilities.

Soundcraft Ghost

The Soundcraft Ghost has been an important part of my studio since 2009. It’s a classic mixer which is almost 18 years old now. I had been looking for this mixer for ages before I finally found one sitting in the storage unit of our record distributor (it was hidden behind tons of shelves and boxes leading the sad life of a un-used tool). Everything we record goes through this mixer at some point. It’s famous for its EQs, I especially love the silky trebles.

Gang Of Ducks Share Transfixing New Video

The latest release on Gang Of Ducks drops today from label co-founder XIII.

The EP, titled Eocity, is “the result of a study on technological failure and the imagination of a non-existent urban landscape.” Recorded with the Yamaha EX5R, one of the first synths to implement VL synthesis, the EP presents a cold-yet-inviting artificial world full of mind-bending synth work. In this world presented on Eocity, man is not around anymore and the computer and machines are left to interact with the natural environment, represented with an ever-evolving array of alien-like synth lines and organic recordings.

Alongside the release of the EP, Gang Of Ducks has shared a transfixing new video for EP cut “Sez_1N3v13,” available to watch via the player below.

Prins Thomas Teams Up with Norwegian Jazz Legend Bugge Wesseltoft on New Album

Smalltown Supersound will release a collaborative album by Prins Thomas and Norwegian jazz legend Bugge Wesseltoft, scheduled to land July 20.

Bugge Wesseltoft introduced his new conception of jazz to the world in the late ’90s, a golden time for Norwegian music during which the rest of the world began to sit up and take notice. A few years later came the electronic dance genre “space disco.” Along with Todd Terje, Bjørn Torske, and Lindstrøm, Prins Thomas was at the epicenter of this next big wave to surge out of Norway. Their collaboration now sees these two generations come together.

The album was recorded in Oslo’s The Rainbow Studio, a familiar name for anyone who follows the ECM label; many of its classic 1970s jazz albums were recorded there under the eye of resident producer Jan Erik Kongshaug. Bugge and Thomas booked a couple of sessions at the legendary space with Kongshaug at the controls, and improvised some tunes in the style and spirit of some of their favorite ECM moments, like the fresh, open sounds of Codona, Egberto Gismonti, Oregon, and Kenny Wheeler.

Bugge has previously done a remix of Thomas’ “Bobletekno” in 2015 but this is the first time they have worked together as active musicians. The results—also partly taped at Thomas’s home studio—fuse programmed rhythms, live synths, and percussion. For an even more authentic touch, they called up one of their local heroes and one of Norway’s most famous jazz drummers, Jon Christensen, who’s been the go-to guy for Jan Garbarek, Terje Rypdal, Keith Jarrett, and many more.

DJ Seinfeld Lines Up ‘DJ-Kicks’

Armand Jakobsson (a.k.a DJ Seinfeld) is up next in K7!’s DJ Kicks mix series.

We’re told that Jakobsson approached his DJ-Kicks with the intention of representing all the things that made him fall in love with dance music more than a decade ago, as well as showing some of the progression that has occurred in that time and “reflecting the simultaneous fear of leaving something safe behind as well as the excitement of venturing into unknown territories, musically, and emotionally.”

In order to make the mix “as personal as possible,” Jakobsson called upon the many talented people around him making music. It features mostly exclusive material, from artists such as FaltyDL, Project Pablo, Mor Elian, and J. Albert, alongside a handful of Melbourne artists.

Jakobsson recorded the mix at Inkonst club in Malmo because, having recently returned home to Sweden from Barcelona, he has not yet set up a studio in his hometown.

Premiere: Hear a Deep and Dubby Cut by Silvie Loto

Italian DJ and producer Silvie Loto will drop her debut Rhythm Cult release later this month.

Titled Killing Time, the EP features three fathoms deep cuts perfectly fitting the stripped-back dubby aesthetics Silvie has made her own over the last decade. Killing Time is Silvie’s first outing since 2014’s Crying Love EP on BPitch Control and finds the Music On regular in fine form, ranging from the opening cut’s murky rhythm to the tense atmospheres of “Cosmic Drums” and the strutting, dub-influenced grooves of “Shet.”

Killing Time is set to drop on June 29, with “Shet” streaming in full via the player below.
