Shanghai’s Laughing Ears Next on Mexico’s Infinite Machine

Laughing Ears will release her second album via Mexico’s Infinite Machine.

Her lengthiest offering to date, Blood consists of 10 tracks that highlight the Shanghai producer’s knack for building otherworldly atmospherics within club-ready, dance music structures. It takes the tale of Fenrir, a giant wolf in Norse mythology who spent much of his life bound and chained to a rock in captivity, as its starting point. Conceptually, it deals with family ties and the melancholic beauty that can be found in the darkness of loss.

Sonically, we’re told that the album is inspired by footwork.

Blood is Laughing Ears’ second album, following Tidal Effects, released in 2019 on the Beijing-based imprint Ran Music.

Download: Fatwires “Strings Of Dread”

German artist John Eckhardt released The wicked Path under his Fatwires moniker in October of last year.

The LP features nine apocalyptic dub tracks that are anchored by Eckhardt’s raw bass guitar, which is twisted and contorted into speaker-rattling labyrinths of sound. It’s an album of organic, cinematic, and entirely engrossing music made for full immersion, and one we have been coming back to countless times since first discovering its lead track, “Strings Of Dead” via the XLR8R+ submissions portal.

We featured “Strings Of Dread” in our August Submissions Roundup, and we’re now offering it up as an XLR8R download to XLR8R+ subscribers.

Under his birth name, Fatwires, Forresta, and various collaborative projects, Eckhardt has released over 30 recordings that explore low frequencies and the bass guitar’s outer-most reaches. He has also performed internationally, working with, among others, composers Helmut Lachenmann and Pierre Boulez, and artists Elliott Sharp, Peter Evans, and Evan Parker.

“Stings Of Dread” is available as a download below. You can purchase The wicked Path via Eckhardt’s Bandcamp, and stream it via the Bandcamp player below.

He’s also become a vital node of the Portuguese scene by connecting several generations of ravers via his own label, party, and radio show, Paraíso, a platform devoted to documenting past, present, and future of the local rave movement.

The release comes with a remix from label head Violet, who takes a left turn into sub-bass wobbles. Closing down the EP is a remix from Ilana Bryne, who delivers a liquid breakbeat roller.

Echoplexia is the label’s 12th release, following Ilana Bryne’s Strange Adventure EP, released in May last year, and Black Cadmium’s Chemistry in November.

Rising Vietnamese-American Songwriter nenci Prepares Two New Singles

nenci, a queer Vietnamese-American songwriter from Vallejo, California, will release two new tracks next week in collaboration with Leviathe.

“Underneath the Moon” and “Lydia” blend classical flute, California hip-hop, and experimental R&B. They represent a departure from nenci’s past releases, including 2019’s tomorrow, for sure EP, in that they have a heftier tone through growling synths, low kicks. There’s also levitating flute arches and tape-sampled vocals.

While nenci’s previous work has been focused on trauma and mental health struggles, these two new tracks harness the beauty of the imagination when in pursuit of romance.

nenci, real name Nancy Tran, is based in Oakland, and her work is embedded in ’80s and ’90s R&B. Leviathe is also a Queer Vietnamese-American musician that produces out of Different Fur studios in San Francisco, California.

Download: Bruce Brubaker & Max Cooper “Two Pages” (Tegh Version)

Later this month, Infiné Records will release Glassforms Versions, a five-track remix EP that finds Donato Dozzy and Daniele Di Gregorio, Laural Halo, and Tegh remixing Bruce Brubaker and Max Cooper‘s interpretations of Philip Glass. Brubaker and Cooper also offer additional versions, as you can see in the tracklisting below.

The Glassforms project’s first iteration was a live experience on the stages of avant-garde European festivals and venues, with American pianist Bruce Brubaker and British electronic producer Max Cooper exploring the work of Philip Glass. A studio album followed in the summer of 2020, expanding the project’s scope.

Glassforms Versions continues that expansion, placing the album’s source material into the hands of some of the finest artists operating in techno, ambient, and experimental electronics.

In support of the release, Infiné has offered up Tehran sound artist Tegh’s remix as an XLR8R download, available now exclusively to XLR8R+ subscribers.

Tegh’s version is an exercise in emotive high-definition sonics, unfolding across eight-and-a-half minutes with raw, brooding energy that flows through complex mountains of sound.

Podcast 678: Special Guest DJ

Special Guest DJ, or Shy as he’s known by his friends, is an artist who adorns many guises. As Special Guest DJ, he plays bass and breaks and textural club music, and he’s sprinkled his music out as uon, DJ Paradise, Caveman LSD, Critical Amnesia, and Ghostride The Drift.

Outside of this, he curates labels xpq?, alongside D. Tiffany, and Experiences LTD. The latter of these, launched in 2019, has become a touchstone in the wildly enigmatic collective of artists that originates from Kansas but has welcomed Special Guest DJ. Together, they explore transfixing dub and downtempo. We featured their work in a special XLR8R+ edition here, with six exclusive tracks and two mixes.

As is customary for the collective, Special Guest DJ maintains a low profile, swerving promotional campaigns. What we do know is that he originates from Michigan and met Exael, who met the original crew-members Brian Leeds (a.k.a Pendant and Huerco S.), Pontiac Streator, and Ulla while in school, on Tumblr. The couple lived together in Chicago, throwing parties and shows, before buying one-way tickets to Berlin four years ago, and they’ve never looked back. Pontiac Streator has made Special Guest DJ an honorary crew-member.

2020 was a breakout year for Special Guest DJ and his work. In its first full-year, Experiences LTD. helmed Ben Bondy’s exceptional debut album, plus there was Ulla’s spellbinding Tumbling Towards A Wall, which we included in the best releases of the year. Besides a shoegaze collaboration with Exael as Hoodie, there was also an EP as Caveman LSD. These followed an earlier album as uon on West Mineral Ltd., released in 2018.

Looking ahead to the new year, Special Guest DJ composed an XLR8R podcast showcasing forthcoming material and work he’s found online. It aims to highlight the work of friends, and includes “L-theanine,” Exael’s contribution to the XLR8R+ compilation. Sonically, it is misty and contemplative; pulsating bass and lysergic textures rope you into where it was recorded: in the dead of night during a Berlin winter during lockdown. Put your headphones on and let the flickering darkness in.

01. What have you been up to recently?

Watching “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” with Naemi (a.k.a Exael), my partner. Thinking about physical activity.

02. What music have you been listening to?

This, this, and this.

03. You’re part of a whole crew of artists surrounding the West Mineral label. How did you connect?

I met Naemi on Tumblr and we fell in love, and then Rory made me honorary Kansas. I’m from Michigan.

04. What can the listener expect?

It’s hazy but sharp, hi- and lo- focused and faded. It could be ambient, depending on your attitude.

05. How did you go about choosing the records that you included?

I wanted to highlight what’s going on in our orbit, and I was feeling the gentle, dark December, with full vamp. It’s full of stuff from friends, plus some forthcoming stuff, some unreleased, and some Bandcamp grips!

06. What’s up next?

Up next on Experiences Ltd. on January 28 is mu tates’ full length LP, Let Me Put Myself Together, which I love. Then there’s two records for xpq? from la fe (Daniel Rincon and Michael Red), and one of my first friends in Berlin, PVAS.

Then I’m going to focus on finishing up some records. There’s a new Caveman LSD record, a collaboration record with Ben Bondy, and a collaboration with Naemi and Perila. I’m also gonna fuck around and start another label, called 3XL. Catch you on the flip side!

Oakland’s Dax Pierson Unveils Solo Album on Dark Entries and Ratskin Records

Photo: Lance Yamamoto

Dax Pierson will release his debut solo album on San Francisco’s Dark Entries and Oakland’s Ratskin Records.

Pierson, an Oakland-based musician, has called the East Bay home for 20 years. He was co-founder of the bands Subtle and 13 & God, a touring member of hip-hop group Themselves, and an associate of the Anticon collective.

In 2005, Subtle encountered black ice in the middle of the country while on tour and flipped over, leaving Pierson with a spinal cord injury. Since his individual fingers are now paralyzed, Pierson has switched to using a laptop controlled with iPad apps in order to produce. He’s spent the last 12 years exploring the possibilities that technology could offer.

He recorded Nerve Bumps (A Queer Divine Dissatisfaction) over the last 24 months. Across eight tracks, he blends hip-hop, jazz, John Carpenter-esque arpeggios, trap, anti trap-influenced percussion, and musique concrète-informed experiments. It’s mastered by George Horn at Fantasy Studios.

The album’s front cover features a painting of pink and green horizontal stripes by Pierson’s partner, artist Chuck Nanney. A photograph of Pierson’s wheelchair graces the back sleeve, which you can see below.

“Futuristic synthesizers cut through layers of fog as Pierson’s bombastic drum programming forges new worlds within themselves,” the Californian labels explain.

Jimmy Edgar Announces First Solo Album in Eight Years

Jimmy Edgar will release Cheetah Bend, a new solo album on Innovative Leisure.

Recorded over the past few years across Atlanta, Detroit, Los Angeles, and beyond, Cheetah Bend draws as much on Edgar’s vibrant 15-year discography as a producer as it does his ubiquity in rap circles. It comes eight years after Majenta, his last album, and “improbably synthesizes what might seem like disparate styles,” we’re told, “unspooling fresh perspectives and glistening sound design that flaunts genre rules.”

“The value I bring is hybridization,” Edgar explains of his approach. “I think about different universes of sound coming together to create an entirely new domain of knowing.”

Building upon a slew of Edgar’s prior collaborative endeavours, Cheetah Bend finds him working in tandem with a variety of artists, including Danny Brown, SOPHIE, and Hudson Mohawke.

“SOPHIE and I spent time together trading files, sounds, and techniques, developing a new kind of version of modal synthesis,” Edgar says of having used resonators and delays to emulate sonic environs akin to pipes, tunnels, and vibrating sheets.

According to the label, Danny Brown does “irreparable microphone damage” to “Get Up,” a tough love motivational set to springy synth flourishes and bass rattling. Toronto singer Rochelle Jordan, a recent J-E-T-S collaborator, imbues the lithe R&B suite “Crank,” while Atlanta trapper B La B spits streetwise singsong over a snappy beat.

Since emerging as a prodigious teen via early pseudonymous offerings for respected electronic labels like Merck, Edgar broke out under his own name in 2004 on Warp Records. His recent move from Berlin to the sunnier climes of Los Angeles has proven a “turning point,” we’re told, altering his perspective again and exposing him to a wider musical universe.

Istanbul’s Badmixday Signs to Dome of Doom for New Album

Istanbul-based Anıl Berk Çetin, better known as Badmixday, has signed with Dome of Doom for the release of his sophomore album, Goya.

Across eight tracks, Badmixday pushes forward with the lush instrumentalism of his maiden outing, 2017’s A Quiet Mind Awaits on Seattle’s Hush Hush Records. The release pulls pieces from downtempo, jazz, experimental electronica, classical, and instrumental hip-hop, and we’re told that the depth of Badmixday’s musicianship gives the record a “mature yet otherworldly” feel.

Goya is a potent amalgamation of sound where technically expansive song structures are given soulful palettes of color to represent the inner-self,” the label continues. “Nothing is wasted in the process.”

Badmixday began writing for Goya weeks after the completion of A Quiet Mind Awaits, and he finished the the record after relocating to a new home-studio in Istanbul this year. Across the record, he presents piano, electric piano, electric guitar, trumpet, violin, and clarinet, in synthesizer form. Most of the album’s percussion was recorded from various modern and vintage drum machines in Badmixday’s personal collection.

Unlike Badmixday’s debut, there is only one feature across Goya: Rijekä, one of Badmixday’s closest friends from Turkey, who appears on “Easy The Kid Not Anymore,” which you can stream below.

Conceptually, Goya is a personal reflection from the creator, serving as a “time capsule” to the life Badmixday experienced over the last three years with his family, collaborators, and close friends. The album talks about how and when Badmixday encountered Sufism and how he experienced it, especially with the help of his grandfather.

The artwork comes from Argyle Plaids, who adds another immersive collage piece for the Goya cover.

Podcast 677: TAH

As we lean into 2021, we begin with a podcast from TAH, a rising name in all things Jersey club, a bass-heavy concoction of breakbeats, rapid tempos, and chopped samples. The 26-year-old, real name Taree Shakuur, became accustomed to the genre while sneaking into parties around Newark, New Jersey, from where it originates, and he began DJing as soon as he was old enough. He’s recently started to release his own productions, transmuting his emotions, moods, and the state of the world around him onto Menacing, his first full-length project.

There’s little known about TAH and his work, other than that he found music through his family. His father and his Mom’s cousin played records through the late ’80s and early ’90s, which sparked in him an interest in house, and his grand-father played jungle music to him as a two-year-old. As he grew up and became more exposed to the music of those around him, TAH connected to some local artists and has since became a central figure in a small but close-knit community of Newark DJs. Besides playing around the city, he’s a resident of Half Moon, an online radio collective based in New York, and he hosts SWEATYSTICKYSWEET, a New Jersey-based queer-centric party.

As one of Jersey Club’s newer names, TAH recognizes a responsibility to push the boundaries of the genre rather than being shackled by it. Across his XLR8R podcast, recorded in the summer, he’s sought to present tracks that lean into different genres of music, encompassing house, garage, and Baltimore club. While the mix looks back, presenting a handful of tracks released through the 2000s, it also looks forward, as TAH demonstrates his range as a DJ and considers Jersey club’s future.

01. What have you been up to recently?

Nothing much, just working on some music and mixes, and staying sane. I’ve also started a side-project of refurbishing this table I found at a yard sale. I also harvested some potatoes I had planted in the summer, and I’ve planted an elderberry shrub!

02. How has the lockdown period been for you?

It has been very interesting. I say that because there are stressful times but a lot of new opportunities have been presenting themselves in my personal life, and for that I’m always grateful!

03. What music have you been listening to?

A little bit of everything, but more so funk and soul gospel, plus a lot of Jammin Gerald and DJ Funk stuff, too. Plus everything in between!

04. How did you find your way into electronic music and DJing?

My father was a local DJ, and my grandfather played jungle for me as a two-year-old. My family is heavily into music. I’m also from Newark, New Jersey where people literally ride down the street bumping house and club! I was literally born into the culture, I guess. I’ve always appreciated it and once I was old enough, I hopped in it myself!

05. When and where did you record this mix?

In the back at Bassbear, Swisha, and Kala’s studio in summer.

06. How did you go about choosing the tracks that you’ve included?

I came across a collection old club tracks from the early 2000s and I thought it would be cool to rinse them. Some of those songs are literally a part of my childhood and have memories attached to them. It’s really cool to me that I get to play them out myself!

07. How do you go about finding the tracks you play our more generally?

Simply just digging, having conversations, taking walks, and exploring my musical taste.

08. What’s next on your horizon?

More music. I’ve got a lot of cool projects lined up for next year, and some personal projects as well as some things with some really awesome artists.
