DJ Rashad’s ‘Double Cup’ Set for 10th Anniversary Reissue

Partisan Records will release a 10th anniversary reissue of the late DJ Rashad’s debut album, Double Cup.

Double Cup, originally released in 2013, saw Rashad hybridising footwork with hip-hop, R&B, acid house, and other styles.

“Rashad and I knew that this was our opportunity to showcase on a broader level. We wanted to make sure we included all the guys in the recording,” says DJ Spinn, a key collaborator on the album. “It was really like a posse album for the most part, [introducing] DJ Earl, DJ Phil, Manny, myself, Taso.”

Wes Harden, Rashad’s manager around the release of Double Cup, added: “Double Cup represents the future. It did when it came out, and still does today. It’s the sound of Rashad grabbing the torch of Chicago house from people like Frankie Knuckles and taking it further—to a new generation, a new type of listener, to new parts of the world. The music sounds as alive today as it did in 2013.”

The album contains most of Rashad’s most beloved cuts, such as “Everyday Of My Life” and “Drank, Kush, Barz.” The 10 anniversary edition will feature new artwork by Ashes57, longtime friend of Rashad, and a limited edition gold vinyl pressing.

In conjunction with the announcement, Partisan unveils “Last Winter,” a digital exclusive track originally only available on out-of-print CD versions of Double Cup. The track is a luscious, wistful synth-studded outing that samples Stevie Wonder. The accompanying video which is streaming below compiles never-before-seen archival footage of Rashad’s legendary club performances, collaged with clips of Rashad and his collaborators recording in the studio.

Podcast 823: Lukid

Earlier this month, Luke Blair, who is better known as Lukid, returned with his first solo album in more than a decade: Tilt, on his own Glum label. Across its 11 tracks, the album delivers a refined take on the London DJ-producer’s frayed yet bittersweet sound which has become his signature across his previous releases on Ninja Tune, Warp’s Arcola imprint, and Actress’ Werk Discs—which is where he released Lonely At the Top, his previous album, in 2012. Since then, Blair has been busy with Refreshers, an outlet for his more dancefloor focussed productions, and Rezzett, a duo with Jackson Bailey. Together, they’ve released a series of grotty records on The Trilogy Tapes, including Meant Like This in April. (With Simon Lord, Blair also makes psychedelic pop as Arclight, and he also scores for film and television.) Recorded recently in his north London apartment, Blair’s XLR8R podcast is simple, repetitive, and stripped-back, yet also sophisticated; each track is rife with granular beauty and interlocking melodic flourishes—which frankly is a perfect reflection of Lukid. Tune in for just under an hour of gritty angularity and gorgeous melted ambience.

01. What have you been up to lately?
I’ve been making music, making mixes, watching films, cooking, wasting time on the internet, that sort of thing.

02. What have you been listening to?
All sorts of stuff. I had a long day of travel yesterday and listened to a lot of early Dipset and the new Alan Partridge audiobook.

03. What is it that appeals to you about dance music?
I can’t say it appeals to me more than any other type of music really. I am a music man at heart; if it moves me then that’s what matters.

04. Where and when did you record this mix?
A couple of weeks ago at my home in North London.

05. How did you go about choosing the tracks?
It’s a combination of music that I’ve played recently on my NTS show, and things I have played out the last couple of times I’ve DJd.

06. What can the listener expect?
Be ready to ride the big dipper of the mixed metaphor. Be ready to dip your hands in the lucky bag of life, gather the storm clouds of fantasy, and anoint your own genius!

07. How does it compare to what we might hear you play out live?
It’s pretty similar I think, although I might bottle out of playing a couple of the weirder tracks if I’m being honest with myself!

08. What’s next on your horizon?
Making music, making mixes, watching films, cooking, wasting time on the internet, that sort of thing.

Brainfeeder to Release Deluxe Version of Austin Peralta’s ‘Endless Planets’

Brainfeeder will release a new deluxe edition of Austin Peralta’s 2011 album, Endless Planets.

Endless Planets was, and remains, a landmark album in the Brainfeeder catalog, marking the label’s first foray into jazz. It pre-dated Peralta’s friend Thundercat’s debut album, The Golden Age of Apocalypse, by a few months and Kamasi Washington’s The Epic by four years.

The new edition features four previously unreleased tracks including a live version of “DMT Song” from Flying Lotus’ 2012 album, Until the Quiet Comes, that Austin co-wrote. Recorded at the legendary BBC Maida Vale Studios in London in July 2011, Peralta led an all-star British band comprising Richard Spaven (drums), Tom Mason (bass), Jason Yarde (alto sax), Heidi Vogel (vocals), and Jason Swinscoe of The Cinematic Orchestra (electronics).

On Endless Planets, Austin recorded with the late Zane Musa (alto sax), Ben Wendel (tenor and soprano), Hamilton Price (bass), and Zach Harmon (drums). He also relied on longtime friend and associate Strangeloop for electronic manipulation.

The Endless Planets‘ artwork is by Strangeloop, reworked for this new deluxe vinyl edition by Adam Stover and Sean Preston.

Peralta effortlessly combined inquisitive futurism with a healthy respect for the heritage of jazz. He was a Los Angeles native and son of JC Caldwell and Stacy Peralta. He tragically died in 2012 at the tender age of 22 years old. Today would have been his 33rd birthday.

“I don’t think art can or should be classified into earthly conventions,” Peralta once said. “True art defies categorization and transcends boundaries and shouldn’t be looked at through a lens of ‘earthly’ or ‘not earthly.’ If you let it wash over you and carry you away, that experience may not feel like anything you’ve ever experienced here on Earth. It can be the doorway into an infinitude of worlds.”

Sean La’Brooy Next on Scissor and Thread

Sean La’Brooy will release a new EP on Francis HarrisScissor and Thread.

La’Brooy is an Australian producer and composer currently based in New York, whose work traverses ambient, jazz, and house music. He is the co-founder of Australian ambient label Analogue Attic Recordings, where he has released two albums including There’s Always Next Year.

On Merchant, he delivers five dreamy and versatile tracks featuring his distinct style of harmonically complex pads mixed with jazz-influenced instrumental melodies and solos.

“With Merchant, I’ve tried my hardest to establish a unique identity while featuring five tracks that feel totally different at the same time,” La’Brooy explains. “Different concepts, genres, tempos, instrumentation, still with a red thread to connect them all. In my mind, those commonalities are defined by a particular mood or sentiment, the use of playful melodies, and a reliance on acoustic rhythms throughout.”

Podcast 822: Julie Marghilano

Most readers will know Julie Marghilano as the head of Sol Asylum, the Berlin, Germany-based label where she puts out deep house, techno, and experimental cuts—both her own but also from Pressure Point (who shared an XLR8R podcast in 2021, and a more recent one as D:fferent Place), Titonton Duvanté, and Dana Ruh, among others (together with Ruh, Marghilano delivered an XLR8R podcast last year, filled with otherworldly house and techno.) She also heads up a Sol Asylum party series where she exhibits another side to her artistic repertoire: an eclectic DJ with a library of records spanning decades that explores a myriad of nuances and genres within dance music and beyond. The series recently celebrated its 12-year anniversary with a party at Heideglühen this past June.

Underpinning her work is a love for music that dates back to her childhood in Las Vegas, where she grew up the daughter of a jazz musician father and vocalist mother. She was composing simple songs by the time she was a teenager and began producing electronic music in 2002, spending thousands of hours trying and improving. For this week’s XLR8R podcast, Marghilano has delivered a studio mix filled with some of her favorites from this collection: Coco Bryce, Scott Diaz, and more. Expect one hour of classic Detroit techno, Chicago house, and jungle direct from Berlin.

01. What have you been up to recently?
I have been opening a Sol Asylum merchandise store, attending the Circle of Live mentorship program, organizing a Sol Asylum Live stream for RTS.FM, a label night in New York, and sorting my winter tours out and making some tunes.

02. What have you been listening to?
Kamaal Williams, Guru, Yussef Dayes, Kelela, Eliza, Kendrick Lamar, Funclab Records, and some Coltrane.

03. Where did you record this mix?
I recorded this mix in my studio on a sunny, cold day in Berlin.

03. What setup did you use?
Two Technics SL-1200, a Pioneer mixer and Pioneer CDJ-350s.

04. How did you choose the tracks you’ve included?
I have to be honest. It was a struggle to find the motivation as I am very sensitive to what is happening in the world at the moment so I really had to think of what our purpose is and where our music originated.

This helped me to set the mood. I tried to capture the emotions I was feeling and imagined the vibe of a warehouse in the ’90s.

I truly believe our music will always be political. Love has never been a popular movement but it’s our duty as artists to unite people in hard times so I hope this message will resonate through the mix.

05. What can the listener expect?
A colourful mix from my record collection from cheap finds from the ’90s to Detroit to UK, Chicago, and jungle.

07. What’s next on your horizon?
I am going on tour in November and December and I am quite excited to be starting it with the Sol Asylum label night at Jolene in collaboration with Golden Records. A couple other highlights will be playing The Lot Radio, and also Honcho/ Hot Mass. But the best part will be that I get to see my family.

Lisbon’s Príncipe Welcomes XEXA

Príncipe will release a new album from XEXA, a young Afro-Portuguese artist living in London.

Vibrações de Prata is a presentation of XEXA’s different sensibilities as a composer, musician, and sound designer, mapping what are in effect her initial explorations with voice, rhythms, synths, and ambience.

As a student at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London between 2019 and 2023, she presented in her third year a portfolio that included what we can now listen as “Clarinet Mood,” the final track on the album.

Her intention was to “study the feeling of listening to music as an environment one inhabits and not as a sound that follows you throughout the day.”

Artwork comes from Márcio Matos.

Podcast 821: DJ 3000

The techno of Detroit DJ-producer DJ 3000 (born Franki Juncaj) can be distinguished by its heavy sampling and instrumentation drawing from his Albanian heritage. A longtime Underground Resistance associate, he was raised in Hamtramck, Michigan, a city within the Detroit borders that is heavily populated by immigrants from Southeastern Europe and the Middle East. He initially started to DJ under his own name before his friend DJ Bone introduced him to the UR collective and he quickly became part of the family. UR co-founder Mad Mike Banks decided that Juncaj needed a DJ name, so he DJ 3000 in honor of the street address of UR’s Detroit headquarters, which had just relocated.

DJ 3000’s first release was 2002’s Somewhere in Detroit Mix Series, Vol. 1, released by DJ Assault’s Electrofunk Records. He has since collaborated with Ursula Rucker and remixed Depeche Mode, Ellen Allien, St. Germain, and others. Further releases include albums like 2014’s Besa, 2020’s two-part Spectrum compilation, and dozens of EPs, including 2022’s Mashallah. Next up is Mezë, his fifth album that will be released as a series of EPs, and to celebrate it he prepared an XLR8R podcast of deep house and techno. Across its one-hour runtime, you’ll hear music from Daphni, Luke Hess, and Underground Resistance—plus some advance cuts from Mezë.

01. What have you been up to recently?
I’ve been incredibly occupied with my upcoming album, Mezë, scheduled for release on November 17. This project took about a year to come together, and I’m genuinely thrilled with the final result. Lately, my days have been filled with extensive planning for the four vinyl EPs that will accompany this album. It’s been a process that demands a great deal of patience and time, especially in terms of organizing marketing strategies, promotional efforts, and vinyl distribution.

02. What have you been listening to?
My musical tastes are quite diverse, spanning from R&B to jazz to the soulful sounds of Motown and everything in between. To satisfy my musical cravings, I tune in to two weekly podcast shows: Dubmission Radio from Pittsburgh, which has been a staple since 1998, and Basic Soul Radio. While I primarily focus on my own electronic music production, I do enjoy catching some DJ mix shows like Colin Dale’s Abstract Dance Show for my electronic fix!

03. What is it about electronic music that resonates with you?
I stumbled into the world of electronic music relatively late, around 1994 and 1995. It began during nights out at clubs with my cousins, where I encountered a genre of music I had never heard before, and it instantly captivated me. I began gravitating towards the DJ booth, asking questions about the songs they were playing. I started frequenting more clubs and parties where this music, which I would later discover was electronic music, took center stage. This marked the beginning of my deep dive into the electronic music scene, leading me to explore the roots of Detroit techno and, from there, the rest became history.

04. Where and when did you record this mix?
I recorded this DJ mix in my home studio just a few days prior to this feature. Initially, I did one take, but I wasn’t satisfied with how it turned out. About a day or two later, I decided to give it another go, and I’m pleased with the result!

05. What setup did you use?
I created the mix using a Vestax 05 Pro II mixer, along with two Technics 1210 turntables and one borrowed Pioneer CDJ-1000. My DJing preference has always leaned toward vinyl records; it’s just my personal style. While I have nothing against digital DJing, there’s something about the tactile experience and authenticity of vinyl that resonates with me. For this mix, I had to borrow the CDJ from a friend to incorporate a few digital tracks—roughly three or four of them. These were either songs not available on vinyl yet or tracks by friends that I genuinely admire and wanted to include in the mix.

06. How did you choose the tracks that you’ve included?
I aimed to curate a blend of both current and timeless tracks sourced from friends and artists whose productions I admire. I’m not the type of DJ who exclusively spins the latest hits or tracks fresh off the press. My sets typically feature a balanced fusion of old gems and current favorites—songs that might have slipped your memory or stand as certified classics!

07. How does it compare to what we might hear you play out?
This mix provides a good reflection of how I perform in my DJ sets. Depending on my mood on any given day, I typically cover a wide range of genres, spanning from techno to electro and everything in between when I’m behind the decks.

08. What’s next on your horizon?
Currently, my primary focus is on my upcoming album, Mezë, which will consist of four separate 12″ vinyl EPs. Following this release, my attention will remain dedicated to promoting my music through my Motech label, with a strong emphasis on vinyl output. I took a brief hiatus to concentrate on music production and ensure that all the pieces were in place for this vinyl output.

Daft Punk to Release Drumless Version of ‘Random Access Memories’

Daft Punk will release a drumless version of their 2013 album, Random Access Memories.

The 13-track album strips away all the percussive elements from the former French duo’s fourth and final full-length. Doing so brings out a timeless quality to the album, giving listeners the ability to dive deeper into the layers of each track.

It forms part of Random Access Memories‘ 10th anniversary celebrations, which began earlier this year with a bonus edition of the LP, with a series of bonus tracks that included “The Writing of Fragments of Time,” a kind of behind-the-scenes look at the song’s creation with collaborator Todd Edwards.

Daft Punk split up in 2021. Since then, Thomas Bangalter has shared his solo work, Mythologies, while Guy de Homem-Christo collaborated with Travis Scott on Utopia.

Joy Orbison Unveils Retrospective EP

Peter O’Grady (a.k.a Joy Orbison) has released an EP of old tracks via TOSS PORTAL, his own label.

archive 09-10 is an EP of five of his earliest and “most sought-after” vocal-led demos and vinyl-only releases that have notoriety over the years. This is the first time they’ve been made available digitally.

“These picture (below) were taken around the time my first single, ‘Hyph Mngo,’ was released,” Orbison says. “I was a post boy for a music publisher in Soho at the time. I spent my days in the basement shirking work and planning trips to record shops. Most evenings (when I was supposed to stay late and man the phones) I’d be watching the CCTV waiting for my boss to go home. As soon as I saw him leave I’d leg it to the tube so I could make the train to my mate Kav’s house.

“Kav had a bit of a bedroom studio (brudio) set up and he’d let me work on my ideas while he sat on his bed and ate KFC / perused computer music mag. I made a bunch of music around this time between the brudio and my bedroom setup at my parents’ house. I’m not even sure what the plan was really, I was useless at my (painfully simple) job and I guess this was an escape from that. I had mucked about on Fruityloops and Cubase for years but I think this was the first time I had a bit of a direction or sound. My only goal was to get one of my tracks played on Hessle Audio’s Sub FM show, that was literally it.”

“I was and still am useless at backing up but we managed to remaster a few bits from that era. Mostly mp3s I’d sent to DJs and friends around that time. I’m about to turn 37 and was 21 when ‘Hyph Mngo’ came out, I can honestly say I had no idea that would be the start of a ‘career’ that even now I still feel in the early stages of. Thank you to everyone who has ever asked me about this music or run it up on YouTube. Sometimes it’s ok to look back, but keep your ears peeled for what’s coming next.”

In 2021, Orbison released still slipping vol. 1, his first album, on XL Recordings.
