Leon Vynehall Returns to Club Roots on New Single

Photo: Sam Petts-Davies

Leon Vynehall has released I, Cavallo, a new single via Ninja Tune.

I, Cavallo is dark, throbbing, and infectious, and serves as a stark contrast to Nothing Is Still, his debut album, released last year on Ninja Tune.

Speaking of the track, the UK artist says: “The new material is directed squarely at soundsystems. Following the introspection of Nothing Is Still, I turned my gaze towards a more dissonant and psychedelic corner of a dancefloor.”

The vinyl edition comes accompanied with a ClubFront version.

I, Cavallo is available digitally today, and on November 22 on vinyl.

David August’s 99Chants Welcomes Italy’s Ambienti Coassiali

Next on David August’s 99Chants is Dream Rooms, the new release from the shadowy Italian project Ambienti Coassiali.

Spread out over two sides, Dream Rooms is a immersive listen, recorded with a vintage EKO Ranger guitar from the early 1970s. We’re told that there’s not much manipulation; sounds are left alone to slowly evolve and develop organically. The release is inspired by surreal synthesised tone poems from the late 1980s.

Ambienti Coassiali is the ambient side-project of two people who refer to themselves as Pazuzu and Soda Caustica.

Earlier this year, Giulio Aldinucci debuted on 99Chants with No Eye Has An Equal, the label’s fourth release.

Design and packaging comes from Collin D. Fletcher.

Tracklisting

01. Dream Rooms I
02. Dream Rooms II

Dream Rooms EP is out on December 7 digitally and on limited edition cassette and vinyl.

Learn How to Score a Horror Film

Point Blank‘s new video teaches you how to score a horror film.

In the video, which was extracted from Point Blank’s Composing for Film and TV module, Advanced Composition lecturer Claude Ruelle runs through the instruments and sounds to use for creating dark and tense atmospheres, whilst breaking down each element in the soundtrack explaining the music theory behind it all and how you create an eerie evolving sound with added tension. He also explains the importance of experimentation, showing how different effects, samples, and random notes can also add to the overall effect.

You can watch the video in full below, with more information on Point Blank’s line of courses here. Point Blank has also made the project files (which includes a bundle of free samples) available to download here.

Influences 17: Portico Quartet

Duncan Bellamy, Jack Wyllie, Milo Fitzpatrick, and Keir Vine make up Portico Quartet, an experimental contemporary ensemble, who came together while studying at university in London in 2005. The quartet made a name for themselves by busking outside the National Theatre on London’s Southbank, but have since compiled a healthy discography of forward-thinking, wide-screen jazz drawing on minimalism and electronic music, not to mention earned themselves a Mercury Prize nomination with their debut album, 2008’s Knee-Deep in the North Sea. Besides the unnerving beauty of their work, they’re known for their use of the Hang, a peculiar instrument akin to the steel drum and the brainchild of pioneer sound designers Felix Rohner and Sabina Schaerer.

After a period of self-reflection, the quartet recently returned in 2017 with Art in the Age of Automation on Gondwana Records. Their latest release, Memory Streams, is out now, and to mark the occasion, 15 years after their formation, Jack Wyllie of Portico Quartet took a step back to reflect on their work and the influences behind it.

“This mix digs into the music that bought us to our sound, particularly the common tastes shared and developed when we first started making music together over 10 years ago. What I’ve put together here is stuff that I still often play today. There is a focus on American minimalism; the interlocking, phasing patterns and restless experimentalism of that period remain a strong influence. This moves into jazz; John and Alice Coltrane along with Pharoe Sanders and the band we all bonded over initially, E.S.T. Then there’s some of my favorite tracks I listened to a lot when I was growing up, Apex Twin, Boards Of Canada, and Autechre that have remained a staple. And finishing with Arthur Russell, his beautiful experimental songwriting bringing the mix to a close. Hope you enjoy!” Jack Wylie (Saxophone), Portico Quartet

XLR8R has now joined Mixcloud Select, meaning that to download the podcast you will need to subscribe to our Select channel. The move to Mixcloud Select will ensure that all the producers with music featured in our mixes get paid. You can read more about it here.
