Peggy Gou Delivers New Single; Listen Now

Peggy Gou is back with Nabi, her first single in over two years.

“Nabi” is a piece of slow-burning electronic pop, inspired by ’80s synth classics, the piano pieces of Erik Satie, and the ’80s and ’90s Korean songs Gou’s mother used to play at home during her childhood. The track is also Gou’s first ever vocal collaboration, as she teams up with OHHYUK, the lead singer in Korean band Hyukoh. Its name translates to “Butterfly.”

The single follows Gou’s collaboration with Baltimore techno legend Maurice Fulton on his Jigoo release for Gudu, Gou’s label. It’s the first of two songs she will release over the coming months; the next is set to dial up the tempo, kicks, 808s and 909s to “soundtrack a summer where we can all (hopefully) dance together in our thousands again,” Gou says.

Argentina’s Dabow Delivers Debut Album on Dome of Doom

Argentina’s Dabow, real name Nehuen Garro, will present his debut album on Dome of Doom.

Weird Music of All Kinds caps off a seven-year stint of releasing singles, EPs, and remixes, and also appearing on an abundance of collaborations. We’re told by the Los Angeles label that the album’s 14 tracks are infused with heavy doses of Latinx dance music, experimentally tinged trap beats, and “a sense of energy that makes the album feel like it’s bouncing off the walls.”

“EPs are little inspiration moments that go well together and then you move to something else,” Dabow tells XLR8R. “This LP was, and still is, a longer vision that keeps going by itself and that’s the different feeling that made me realize it was time.”

Recordings for the album took place in Patagonia and Buenos Aires, but the collaborative work with Good Times Ahead, Kali Sandoval, Midnght, and godspeed were all done online. It’s inspired by the work of TNGHT, Hudson Mohawke, and Mr. Carmack, and was originally conceived as a release that would coincide with Dabow’s run of touring in the United States last year.

Space Afrika Are Back with Breathtaking New EP, ‘Untitled (To Describe You)’

Space Afrika, the experimental duo of Joshua Inyang and Joshua Tarelle, have put out a new EP on Sferic.

Untitled (To Describe You), an anxious patchwork of drill, bass, and reflective musique concrète, follows last year’s heartbreaking mixtape hybtwibt? The Manchester pair assembled it to accompany a short film from visual artist Tibyan Mahawah Sanoh. In the film, Sanoh works hard to visually illustrate an honest and vulnerable picture of her soul, and Inyang and Tarelle have responded by doing the same with sound, collaging warped field recordings, syrupy pads, and disorienting vocals to generate a living, breathing study of the duo’s Northern working class reality.

The main event is the full 10-minute soundtrack, which is layered with Sanoh’s disorienting and deeply personal poetry. The release is rounded out with three sketches from the same sessions, two of which never made it to the final mix-down.

In 2018, Inyang and Tarelle put out Somewhere Decent To Live, their debut album.

Tracklisting

01. Untitled (To Describe You) [OST] feat. Tibyan Mahawah Sanoh
02. Version 1
03. Version 2

Quickly, Quickly, a Portland Multi-Instrumentalist, Reinvents Himself on Ghostly Album

Graham Jonson, a multi-instrumentalist from Portland, Oregon, will release a new album as Quickly, Quickly on Ghostly in August.

Jonson started building his musical universe by playing piano as a toddler, finding the music of J Dilla in fifth grade and self-releasing singles by age 16. He first appeared as Quickly, Quickly in 2017, exhibiting a smooth, hypnotic sound that fuses elements of jazz, hip-hop, and R&B. He’s a student of the Stones Throw catalog (his favorite is Madlib’s Quasimoto) and remains rhythm-driven at heart, but on this new album he trusts his instincts with a new palette of organic instrumentation and verse-chorus structure.

The Long and Short of It is a summary of transition, self-validation, and a great leap forward in the 20-year-old artist’s life, we’re told. He plays nearly all the instruments across record, which means everything from drums to keys and guitar, and of course electronics. The result is a sound that straddles jazz, hip-hop, R&B, and psych-pop.

Alongside the announcement, he has shared “Everything Is Different (To Me),” which features a catchy guitar loop, a classic hip-hop drum break, and a swell of strings. It was one of the first songs he wrote upon moving back to Portland from Los Angeles.

“I remember walking downstairs where my studio is and on the stairs on the way down I just thought of the phrase ‘everything is different to me,” he tells XLR8R. “I had no idea what it meant or why it popped into my head but I think I was just like, ‘Ok, that’s cool. There could maybe be something there.'” The song ended up being one of the most introspective cuts on the record, dealing with a lot of his personal struggles with anxiety, vices, and just a general lack of motivation to better himself. Ironically, he made the song unusually quickly and it turned out to be one of his favorite songs he’s ever made.

The Long and Short of It is Jonson’s first album since 2018’s Paths on Radio Juicy.

London Audio-Visual Duo c / a Drop an NFT Ahead of New Album

London duo c / a have dropped a new NFT series on XNFT and shared the second video single from their forthcoming debut album, THE ONLY WAY WE KNOW TO HAVE FUN.

The NFT series, titled HORSES, landed via XNFT this week on the Polygon chain in an edition of seven. It offers a hallucinogenic vision of psychedelic “wild horses running on a springy field,” and was originally created as an intro for their Covid-era virtual performances. It’s a heady and transfixing collectible from two digital art pioneers.

Alongside the NFT, the duo have shared the latest single from THE ONLY WAY WE KNOW TO HAVE FUN, their debut album, landing July 9. Created during the summer of 2020, the album presents 11 tracks that push and pull at the boundaries of sound, ranging from “medieval speed-core, esoteric grime, and horse-riding ambient.” It draws inspiration from previously explored interests such as AI, film, and software programming.

On “THE PRIMER,” the album’s second video single, after “Docile Goetica,” the duo offer a “conceptual study of ‘intuition’ as it relates to algorithmic musical creation, posing a duality between the artist as a chaos magician and the machine as an oraculous tool.” Across the track, simple yet haunting melodies stutter across the frequency spectrum, created from “the neural network of a trained artificial intelligence model dating back to the earliest self-educational programming exercises with Tensorflow.”

You can watch the video for “THE PRIMER” below and read more about the album here. Meanwhile, you can check out the duo’s NFT series over at XNFT.

Podcast 699: Lola Palmer

You won’t find much information on Lola Palmer, the Ukrainian DJ, even if she seems to have played her music everywhere. Born in Razdolnoe, a part of Crimea, she began DJing around 2004 for nothing other than the fun of it; with a love for sharing music with others, she’d spend her weekends playing records at local bars. She opted to pursue it full-time in 2012 and cut her teeth with regular sets on RTS.FM, a Kyiv radio station. She began to produce a year later, driven to make the sounds she wanted to play out, and she surfaced with a compilation of chill-house made in collaboration alongside Konstantin Astafyev. Informed by her DJ sets, which are characterised by a delicate, deep techno groove, her productions have landed on Russia’s MixCult and, more recently, the mighty Berg Audio, a benchmark in warm, dub-driven sounds. Somewhere New, her latest release, accompanied two deep techno tools with remixes from Priku and Janeret.

Today, Palmer is based in Amsterdam, where she’s been enjoying some downtime through the pandemic. She balances life on the road with work in social care. Before the enforced break, she had a touring schedule that matched almost any other DJ in terms of flights taken, with particular emphasis on Europe’s eastern block. As she gears up to tour again, she’s presented some of her newest records in this week’s XLR8R podcast, recorded last week in her apartment. At a touch over one hour in length, it’s full of the records she’s been dying to play out, coming from Losoul, Simo, and Slovenia’s Alex Ranerro. With its deep, light groove, it reminds her of the sets she’d play earlier in her career, when she’d play through RTS and bask in the joy of sharing her favorite music with her friends.

01. What have you been up to recently?

I’m waiting for today’s situation to improve, and for all these lost gigs to be rescheduled. But most of my time at the moment is taken by my day job which is helping families with their kids. Since the pandemic, I’ve been accepting more work on this side and it can consume my energy. Also I’ve started to write more music and I’m happy with my debut EP on Berg Audio. I’m trying to stay motivated and positive, and sports are helping me to keep a balance.

02. What music have you been listening to through lockdown?

I’ve continued to expand my club music library but I’ve also started digging deeper into genres I’ve always been of a fan of like old school hip-hop and R&B, downtempo, and jazz. One of my favorite new discoveries is definitely Midnight, an incredible vocalist from the United States.

03. How did you find your away into music?

From a young age, I knew that I wanted to somehow be more connected to music. At 16, I remember playing at my school parties, which was my first time selecting music that I would then share with people and see their reaction. I will always remember my first “real” DJ set which was back in 2006 in Crimea, a special, and beautiful experience that definitely confirmed my desire to continue sharing music with people, and on a dancefloor.

04. What is it that draws you to DJing?

As I’ve said, sharing music is something I’ve been drawn to since I was very young. DJing has never felt like a job and it’s always a special moment for me—there is just nothing like sharing feelings through music, and seeing how people respond on the dancefloor. Having a job on the side makes you realize how lucky you are to be invited to play music to people and create those special connections; I never take it for granted!

05. Where and when did you record this mix?

At my home in Amsterdam, where I have been living for the past few years.

06. How did you go about choosing the tracks that you’ve included?

My selections alway depend on my mood, what’s happening in my life, and the different emotions I experience. In this podcast, you will find a selection of some deep techno tracks that I’m feeling at the moment. This podcast reminds me a bit of my older ones for Mixcult or RTS.FM for example!

07. What can the listener expect?

I wanted to make this podcast deep, light, and romantic, but always groovy. I’m hoping that your listeners will like it.

08. What’s next on your horizon?

Moving to a new flat, playing a few confirmed gigs this summer, getting back to Kiev to take care of some personal things, and, of course, handling countless hours of kids screaming and laughing during my day job! Thank you again for having me. I’ve wanted to join your series for a long time.

South African Talent Deep Aztec Reinterprets Deep House on Debut Album

Deep Aztec will release his debut album, Healing Frequencies, via his MFENGU Records imprint this summer.

Deep Aztec, real name Azakiwe Jezile, is a South African electronic producer. His journey in music began when he moved from London to Cape Town and was exposed to a wide variety of music, from gospel to house and jazz. He started to make music around the age of 16 and, after just six years, he put out his debut release, A Message to Larry Heard, an homage to deep house on Turn Left Recordings.

Healing Frequencies, his debut album, is a “celebration of music, life, and love” that features Dumama, L Speaks, Rona Ray, and Aztec’s own alter-ego James Blond3. Sonically, we’re told it’s every flavour of jazz, house, disco and more rolled into one, creating “a hypnotic album experience” that reinterprets house music across 12 tracks that present Jezile’s past, present, and far-found future.

“When I look back at my trajectory from the time I started until now, it is certainly nothing short of a never-ending string of changes and progressions,” Jezile tells XLR8R. The journey is full of ups and downs, tears, and laughter. Whenever I’m feeling clueless about life, I find myself reminiscing of my colourful childhood memories. It’s those memories that comfort and remind me that this journey I have taken is because music is what I live for.”

Raime and Valentina Magaletti’s Experimental Moin Project Next on AD93

Photo: Amy Gwatkin

Raime, the collaboration of Joe Andrews and Tom Halstead, will release a new album with percussionist Valentina Magaletti as Moin on AD93.

Moot!, an eight-track album that was quick and painless to create, stems from a “serendipitous conversation,” we’re told. Working in the studio together allowed the musicians to re-appreciate the recording process by using a combination of live recording and studio techniques. As Moin, they’re freed from any past inhibitions or self-made parameters to explore uncharted territory. Sonically, the album spans psychedelia, alt-rock, and post-punk mixed with Raime’s signature brooding electronics.

“The record was made as an experiment really,” the London group tells XLR8R. “It felt like the right time to play on the fringes of this kind of music. The priority was to be direct at first and then change the edges perhaps. Make something to experience rather than something as a spectacle.”

The album follows Moin’s self-titled EP from 2013, released by the defunct Blackest Ever Black.

As part of her CZN project with João Pais Filipe, Magaletti recently dropped an EP, Commutator, on Offen Music, which followed the Luxury Variations 12″ for The Trilogy Tapes. Alongside multi-instrumentalist Tom Relleen as Tomago, Magaletti also released Intimate Immensity in March.

Icelandic Rock Band Skrattar Next on Bjarki’s bbbbbb

Bjarki’s bbbbbb will release an album from Icelandic rock band Skrattar, marking the Icelandic label’s first non-electronic project.

Skrattar, a five-piece outfit of “cigarette rock with an electronic vibe,” has a loyal fanbase in Iceland, and they’re now looking further afield with Hellraiser IV, their latest album. It contains 13 tracks written over three years, with the oldest songs composed the year the band was actually founded, 2016. In 2019, when a good foundation for an album had been laid as the band honed its sound, they locked themselves in the studio to complete it.

With the release of Hellraiser IV, bbbbbb broadens its catalogue beyond dance and electronic music. While the label’s primary focus will remain electro and techno madness, several other genres will also feature; the connecting factor is that the music is Icelandic, experimental, and fresh. “Good music should be heard, and this is my take on delivering probably the best music coming from Iceland at the moment,” Bjarki tells XLR8R. “It’s an honest, wild love story of true friendship and creativity coming together in one album.”

A remix album will be released digitally alongside Hellraiser IV, featuring work from label regular Kuldaboli, DJ Flugvél og Geimskip, russian.girls, and Anton Newcombe, the founder of The Brian Jonestown Massacre.
