Dark Entries Welcomes Borusiade for Second Album

San Francisco’s Dark Entries will release Fortunate Isolation, Borusiade‘s second album.

Fortunate Isolation consists of eight songs that “capture a bystander witnessing the world as it undergoes drastic changes.” The label continues: “We have disconnected ourselves from ecology, humanity, preservation, care for what surrounds us, for what is still alive.”

The album’s sound is gloomy and powerful, mixing sonic film sequences, rhythmic excursions, and soothing yet obsessive vocals that “touch one’s deepest senses,” we’re told. Lyrically, the songs tackle themes of forgotten memories, spirituality, mortality, and destruction.

Born and raised in Bucharest, Romania, Borusiade, real name Miruna Boruzescu, started DJing in 2002 as one of the very few female DJs in the city’s emerging alternative clubbing scene. She has released on labels like Pinkman, Unterton, Cititrax, Correspondant, and Cómeme, where she released her debut album, A Body, in 2018.

Dark Entries, the label of Josh Cheon, released a reissue of Severed Heads’ 1981 album, Clean, earlier this year, but this is its first new material.

DJ Paulo Next on Lisbon’s Paraíso Label

The first EP project on the new Rave Tuga series by Lisbon’s Paraíso comes from DJ Paulo, an alternative alias of Silvestre, who contributed to label compilation Rave Tuga Vol. III, released in May, 2019.

One of the most distinct voices coming from the Portuguese capital, DJ Paulo crafts dance music that is as fun as it is adventurous, balancing energy and experimentation. As Silvestre, DJ Paulo, real name Joao Silvestre, debuted in 2015 with the Frank Pike EP on Japanese label Diskotopia.

“Sons Pa Curtir” opens with textured breaks and vocal synths, creating a playful cut to set the tone for what’s next. “House Party” steps up on the sound design, blending bleeps and stabs with modulated synths, punctuated by phone and spin-back samples.

“Dreamy Club” takes things bask to basics, with an effective acid line bouncing over raw house beats, evoking early ’90s Chicago memories. “Guiar Pela Cidade” takes us back to breakbeat territory, with a ravey bass and vocal cut-ups evoking the energy and cut-and-paste aesthetic of the early days of the UK hardcore continuum.

On remix duties are mina’s BLEID, who delivers a tense rave heater, and Roundhouse Kick, who apply the warmth of their machines to create a stabby, warm roller with snares for days.

Tobias. Returns with ‘1972’ EP

Photo: Stefan Freund

Tobias. is back with 1972, a new EP out February 14 via Ostgut Ton.

On 1972, the veteran producer and live musician offers up four tracks of layered and meticulously-crafted techno using his extensive archives of tape recordings collected since childhood. Referencing a mix of profound political events in German history and esoteric meditation guides, we’re told that the Berghain resident’s warm, detailed sound “edges beyond the floor toward brain-tingling home listening and wanderlust autobahn escapism.”

Tobias., real name Tobias Freund, last put out a solo EP in 2016, namely Helium Sessions, although he did release Studio Works 19861988 last year.

Overall, 1972 features a sound that Tobias. has honed for over 30 years, having initially made a name for himself mixing various pop hits in the ’80s and ’90s while simultaneously producing experimental electronics under various pseudonyms including Metazone, Phobia, Pink Elln, and Zoon.

Julia Govor Unveils Split EP with Kamran Sadeghi Feat. Vocals from Ricardo Villalobos

Next on Julia Govor‘s Jujuka label is a split with EMIT, an alias of Kamran Sadeghi.

Raw Reflex comprises three tracks from each artist. On Govor’s side is “Villa Tone,” which features the vocals of Ricardo Villalobos. In 2012, Govor conducted a video interview with Villalobos where he confessed that he fears dreaming and therefore “prefers not to sleep.” For “Villa Tone,” Govor sampled that part of the interview and used Villalobos’ voice to build loops and textures. The rhythm became something between reggaeton mixed with UK bass.

EMIT read backwards is “time,” the continuum of experience in which events pass from the future through the present to the past. The project is guided by the literal and musical use of time, and these are its first recordings. We’re told that “a culmination of styles unravel within each track, encouraging listeners to discover their own path through the rhythmic and tonal patterns.”

Govor launched Jujuka in 2018, and this is the second release, each of which comes with a comic strip. Raw Reflex comes with a comic depiction of Villalobos, see below.

Tracklisting

A1 / 1. Julia Govor “Broken Pencil”

Loke Rahbek and Frederik Valentin Next on Posh Isolation with New Album

Photo | Sarah Stenfeldt

Loke Rahbek and Frederik Valentin will release Elephant, their new album, via the former’s Posh Isolation on February 28.

The eight-track album will be the duo’s second full-length together following Buy Corals Online on Editions Mego in 2017. We’re told that it’s once again shaped by the delicate interplay between acoustic instrumentation and synthetically rendered sounds.

Hauntingly melodic at times, the album “feels like a suite of uncanny lullabies that grant access to realities that can only be found in dreams,” the Copenhagen, Denmark label explains.

Valentin is best known for his work in the exquisite atypical pop group Kyo. Most recently, he has been working with Yung Lean as both producer on his Nectar album as Jonatan Leandoer127 as well as on their commission for Sweden’s Cullberg Ballet.

As Croatian Amor, Rahbek has made similar forays into unworldly pop, and his work with Christian Stadsgaard as Damien Dubrovnik has been as critical as their co-founding of Posh Isolation.
